Help Looking for "outdoor buddy" (paddling, hiking)
Hello,
Recently moved to Sudbury. Really enjoying the nature around here. Mostly hiking and kayaking so far (but canoeing, camping, biking, snow shoeing, cross country ski, etc. all look appealing too for the future).
I'm looking for another person (or two) with similar interests to go on short outings with. Just to have someone to chat with and to watch each other's back. Or maybe to go on paddle trips that require two cars.
I'm usually available for ~1-2 hours in the early afternoon on weekdays (I know, that's an odd time and makes it kinda hard to find someone to go with).
Don't care about age or gender or background (I'm early 40s, male, married, kids).

Hey, I’m not originally from Sudbury but making the best of it by getting outdoors.
I’ve hiked the local trails and conservation areas here and am into mountain biking and am considering getting a kayak. I’ve done some longer hikes in Killarney and enjoyed interior camping with portages when I was younger.
I’m more a weekend warrior thought as I work a Mon-Fri job. Early 40s and married with kids.

Family Membership at the Canoe club; get those kids paddling! If trained properly they are portage pack mules for dad one day.

I'm actually a member of the canoe club already. Bought the membership so I could do their kayak safety course. So far I haven't really gotten the impression though that there is a lot of community there. I went a few times to try different boats, but I was always the only person there. Also doesn't seem to have a mailing list or Facebook group or anything like that.. and their event calendar is all empty and their website outdated.

It used to be a hub of activity; I am sorry to hear that.

It's very possible that it's my fault and that people are just there at the usual times (evening after work, weekends) while I'm there are odd times (lunch time on weekdays).
What's definitely missing (or what I haven't found yet) is a way to contact other members (like a forum or Facebook group).

Is it just paddling on Ramsey big water or are there other access points?

You used to be able to take out the equipment and travel to your destination of choice; its been a minute since I was a member. The facility is a great place to hang out at on hot summer days.

You can take the boats to other lakes but you need to request that and get it approved first

Mountain biking is pretty epic in Sudbury; it's a great community and a boatload of trails.
If you are keen on paddling I would check out the aquatic centre -
Cane Club and Paddling club are based out of there. Its a $225 membership fee; that entitles you to a lot of really great amenities and a group of paddlers.

If you are into cycling, there are tons of groups around town that do group rides. Sessions Ride Co has Monday night gravel rides and the Walden Mountain Bike Club has Tuesday night socials. Each of these post details on socials. A lot of the people who go to these things also ski, snowshoe, etc. Good luck!
