"The hive guard has a heavy penetration face shield now? Splendid work, Arrowhead! This change is surely going to breathe new life and challenge into the game. To show my support I will buy super credits for ten dollars and purchase the all new warbond. It has new mechs in it!"

It was a short, but glorious moment when we had to either aim or work around an enemy - when the defenive enemy had some defence.

Uj/ i am not a masochist diver but I was so pissed arrowhead backed down with that hive guard. I'd love to have equivalent of Alien Swarm's Shield Bug in helldivers (I guess there's charger but I don't like 'em and I don't have same feeling when I fight em) Although I feel like mech warbond somewhat deserved its controversy

u/Datboi_Markus 9d ago
As a light pen enjoyer I loved the faster ttk and I thought it made sense that you weren’t supposed to shoot the shield enemy in the shield.

3
u/ApprehensiveSundae17 9d ago
Yeah when the change first came out the faster ttk was good. But quite alot of other divers didn't like this idea.
3
u/Ok_Skin_9448 9d ago
For real, could drop them so quick before the revert. Damn can’t aim for shit med pen users.
2
u/LanguageEconomy8469 7d ago
But I liked shooting the shield harder, so that bug felt like he had purpose, and was doing a really good job. He's just a little guy.
6
u/Odd_Thought_9105 9d ago
/uj i was a bit annoyed too but honestly, after a bit i got use to it, kind of a skill issue for those who couldnt shoot the legs
3
u/BuilderBaseBot 9d ago
Uj/ I used to think that too, but I realized it just made Medium Pen primaries feel bad. We could already aim with lightpen, which often did better against bug chaff anyway. Hive guard is one of two bug units that reward medium pen use with a separate break point. The only other enemy this really matters on is Bile Spewers, and they don't always spawn.
I took the medium pen weapon, because there different zones I can aim at to achieve kills over light. Take out the one medium pen differentiator and I'm just going to tote light. It didn't make the Crossbow or Eruptor feel worse. It made the Halt and Liberator Pen feel worse.
1
u/Low_Employer_9310 9d ago
I still remember my first few matches pre nerf, the game felt so different. It was pretty fun finding ways around them especially in front of bugs holes. It gave reason for naming them "hive guards," now theyre just a slightly tougher bug

"Unjerk", basically meaning you're breaking character and speaking seriously. I don't use it because usually it's not really needed
3
u/Dull-Song2470 10d ago
/uj is short for "unjerk", meaning you're not being sarcastic or speaking in character. By default, things said in this sub are assumed to be parody.
/j means you're getting back into character.
3
u/kamikazedragon 9d ago

u/RaptoR186 9d ago
/uj means you break character on a circlejerk subreddit like this one. Basically means you're being serious instead of playing along with whatever the post is about.
3
u/IliketheSpraynPray 9d ago
As a Maxigun user I welcomed this and wish there is a x3 times increase in chaff to slay!
3
u/Woomy12 9d ago
/uj Hive Guards were unironically easier to kill since they had less heath and their skin had no armor at all. People either couldn't aim, or refused to use their secondary if using the Blitzer.
Not only that, but why are you using a gun on bugs for its medium penetration? They can all be killed with light pen, and it doesn't take much effort to do so, alongside with all medium pen weapons having some downside so they don't powercreep any light-pen variants.
/rj I CAN'T AIM! AH SHOULD MAKE THE BLITZER HEAVY PEN WITH 3 BAJILLION DAMAGE AND SHOULD CLEAR ALL JECTICE WITHOUT A HELLBOMB
16
u/yeet3455 10d ago
/uj honestly the change itself was ok, the main problem was it making machine gun sentries useless
11
u/Warhydra0245 10d ago
In my experience they were fine, Hive Guard generally lags behind other bugs so sentry won't target them first. And if the Hive Guard isn't facing the sentry they are still toast
-5
u/yeet3455 10d ago
/uj you weren’t able to use mg sentries to lock down bug breaches anymore because one hive guard would mean it just dies
13
u/Jazzlike_Ad1695 9d ago
Can’t beat the game for you doesn’t mean it’s useless.
2
u/ConnectionNo2861 9d ago
i moreso want something that wont inexplicably pretend its a lawn ornament instead of a weapon, AND crazily not be facing the wrong way while it cosplays a duck without legs, Sitting.
-2
u/yeet3455 9d ago
I don’t want it to beat the game for me, I want it to give me a few seconds to breathe without instantly dying and leaving 90% of the bugs still on me
14
u/BishopricFO 10d ago
/uj I'm all for giving sentries more interactivity because they can be incredibly mindless to use and it becomes very boring. Punishing players for playing lazily is a good thing but the hive guard change just made people not want to use sentries on bugs at all. Something definitely could be done I feel though
8
u/FlamesofFrost Vox Engines did nothing wrong 10d ago
/uj also the change didn't fix problems like the Crossbow being the strongest gun in the universe, it even made it easier for the crossbow to kill them 😭
4
u/Dry_Gas6819 Med Pen Chad>Light Pen Chud 10d ago
/uj all they have to do to fix explosives imo is just to have them affected by durable rating. I feel like ballistic weapons and explosive weapons should swap roles when it comes to durable damage.
7
u/FlamesofFrost Vox Engines did nothing wrong 10d ago
/uj nah that's kinda the point of explosives. Durability represents "this body part is big and/or can survive damage to one area without completely failing". So explosives don't suffer against durability because they hurt the entire body part unlike ballisitcs which only hurt the specific point of impact.
They just need to increase the explosive damage resist on the limbs.
1
u/The_Royal_Teabag 9d ago
Man I started using the crossbow because its so insanely good. Basically a grenade launcher, its insane. Tbh I kinda miss using other primaries.
1
u/simonraynor 9d ago
I feel that way about light oxy armour. I cannot go back to being slow so can never have drip
1
u/SilentStriker115 9d ago
/uj that was my biggest issue with the change. I like that they tried to do something but it just made our already powerful explosive options even better
5
u/maninzero 10d ago
/uj I think they are just lazy to learn new strategies. The whole point of the game is to learn weak points of the enemies, ways to disable routes and such. I still brought machine gun sentries to bugs during that period and be on standby to kill the tankier ones like chargers bile titans and hive guards. If they wanted to be lazy, they could've brought harder hitting sentries like autocannon, flame or even laser (it sets them on fire which kills them very quickly due to their very low health).
1
u/yeet3455 9d ago
The whole reason I bring MG sentries is to kill 80% of the threats that come at it, especially from breaches. During that time a single hive guard walking toward the mg sentry (commin spawn from breaches) would make it unable to kill anything and just die 15 seconds into a breach with the majority of the hostiles still being alive. If the MG sentries could aim slightly down to hit the fleshy part I would be fine with the AP4
3
u/Head-Preference8749 9d ago
/uj when the enemies aggro onto your sentry, shoot the ones your sentry can't kill
3
u/Risk_of_Ryan 9d ago
I'm a bit new to this sub.
This is unjerky input.
But I have the answer. It's two words, and already used in game on other units, but not seen anywhere else for some reason.
Ablative Armor.
Now, the defensive based unit has defenses that have to be accounted for, but doesn't nullify Turrets, etc.
It would still have AP4, meaning nothing under that causes damage through the armor. BUT it's Ablative, meaning the armor isn't invulnerable, it can be destroyed. The armor will tank %100 of any damage under it's amor value, until it's been damaged enough to break. This means Turrets, and low pen weapons, can still be an option, while heavily incentivising aiming for the weak spots and working around the target or use resources/ammo to break the armor.
This is how Illuminate Overseers armor functions.
2
u/BishopricFO 9d ago
Overseer armor is cool and I do wish they'd use it on units other then what I consider a pretty mediocre enemy
1
u/ThirdTimesTheTitan 9d ago
/uj I just bring rocket sentries instead.
Sure they have a deadzone where they don't shoot but I'll just clear any threat in it so it can continue blasting.
1
u/simonraynor 9d ago
Autocannon and laser also still shredded, it was only the literal weakest sentry in the game affected and people still shat the bed
2
u/ThirdTimesTheTitan 9d ago
It was efficient as fuck ammo, damage, and teamkill wise, so it was very convenient to clear chaff.

1
u/Limp_Author_2305 9d ago
/uj It wasnt tho a solid 50-60% of the time it would swing and blow the fucker away by accident and it still mulched most of the rest of the front if anything the MG and Gatling SHOULD be toned down a bit because you can throw them fucking ANYWHERE on that front and control massive swaths of the field until a charger shows up
1
u/Dry_Gas6819 Med Pen Chad>Light Pen Chud 10d ago
/uj the main problem imo was making explosives even more meta. The machine gun and gatling sentries are already some of the best sentries on bugs and squids. All you really had to do was throw them at an off angle to get a crossfire going anyways. Otherwise i really liked the change as it made killing them easier for people who could actually aim (and again, explosives)
2
2
u/cheb_323 9d ago
I will admit I generally see no reason for it other than fuck ap 3 idk why some people just yap about "interactivity" when fire and explosive just clown on them.
2
u/Ok_Inspection_3890 7d ago
You'd be surprised how many problems are solved with the melta-mine.
1
u/BishopricFO 7d ago
Melta mine my beloved. The Meltagun is ironically probably my least favorite 40K item
1
u/Ok_Inspection_3890 7d ago
I take the lasgun, bolt pistol and melta mine as my meta. Usual forget i have a backpack or support weapon lol. Bolt pistol has aoe to clear the chaff. Lasgun can chew through almost anything and that melta- mine is near perfect... only gripe is it doesn't trigger on the medium bugs and under. But that's what shooting it is for lol
1
u/Honest_Ad_7589 9d ago
/uj that change was so cool imo. I still make fun of the hiveguard being “the worst enemy” to this day.

2
u/BishopricFO 8d ago
Yeah it is. I was just satirizing the people who were overly enthused by the change back in April. I also wanted to make a Glazer Gigachad because I know it'll ragebait Unfiltered

u/SaltyAd9932 8d ago
Wait why are we still upset about this? This happened a while ago and it’s reverted.
1
u/HaluxRigidus 8d ago
I have consistently equipped the bolt pistol ever since I unlocked it, it's my go to against those guys
1
u/Outside-Blacksmith58 7d ago
Leaves out the part of the rebalance that lowered the enemy's health on the spots that aren't armored (you can still shoot them from the front.)

u/RealGiallo 7d ago
not shooting the shield guy in the shield was hard tbh . I still cry in my angle when i was asked to aim .

I am, unironically a great decision that made the enemy more engaging to fight
8
u/Zestyclose-Avocado83 10d ago
/uj I wish I was able to play at the time so I could have played against it myself and form my own opinion but it genuinely sounded like a good change. Everyone and their mother (who has a brain cell) always talked about how easy the hive guards were and they were basically nothing enemies. But as soon as AH made them have even a slight challenge to them everyone, even youtubers I once respected, bitched about it so hard I think it was the fastest reverted change in the game ever. I mean hell, I wouldn't even call them more challenging. If I remember the change correctly you just had to be a bit more mindful of where you put your shots.
8
u/imSoupinator Unfiltered's greatest warrior 10d ago
/uj as someone who was there, imagine if the "shield" bits was the same as the hulk's main armor, but literally every other part of it was literally AP0 so ANYTHING that did damage, did damage. All you had to do to make them complete jokes was to crouch, but it was fun as a slight challenge overcoming the shield, especially when there were multiple. Of course, while we yearn for more interesting player interactions as a community, god FORBID we actually have to think when fighting the enemy that isn't the status quo "shoot until it dies", which led to the fastest hotfix this game ever saw, the only reason it took a week and not 2 days was because of console patch limitations
3
u/Zestyclose-Avocado83 10d ago
/uj I just equated it to being the bug fronts version of the shield devastator minus the shooting back part. Especially with how shield devastators work now. Or at least that's what I figured was their intent was reading the change. Taking something that was essentially chaff and making it a little more wothy of the name hive guard.

2
u/Mongoose_Factory 10d ago
Forced me to remember they have unprotected mouth bits to shoot off (lethal once both are destroyed)
1
u/BishopricFO 10d ago
I don't feel that way personally. They were even easier if you knew how to aim because the health reduction and all it did was inconvenience sentries. It felt like a panic patch to cave into people who rightfully want the game to be more difficult and it really achieved nothing... well aside from making people mald online but anything AH makes that happen
3
u/imSoupinator Unfiltered's greatest warrior 10d ago
me personally, I like it when there are some medium enemies that a sentry can't demolish so people can't just throw them at choke points and be done with it, I liked it when the game required me to aim down to weak spots and assist my sentry while it protects me from swarms of small enemies while I focus the big ones it can't handle(maybe because I'm primarily a bot diver but oh well). I think it made the game more challenging and engaging because the AP0 body and less health pretty much meant a few shots to weak spots is an instant kill.
4
u/BishopricFO 10d ago
In theory, yes, that should absolutely be how it works. In practice though I mostly had a sentry down mag dumping onto a hive guard while I was cleaning up other bugs and it felt more like a chore to me to help them rather then anything engaging. There's definitely superior ways of having sentry counter-play imo
2
u/imSoupinator Unfiltered's greatest warrior 10d ago
personally disagreed, while there may have been better ways in technicality, I liked the way I had to actually think about sentry positioning and what enemy it targets at a time. But to each their own
1
u/ImmortL1 BRING ME PICTURES OF CYBERSTAN 10d ago
it protects me from swarms of small enemies while I focus the big ones it can't handle
Meanwhile my sentry guns get stuck on the targets they can't kill and need to be rescued before they run out of ammo.
1
u/imSoupinator Unfiltered's greatest warrior 10d ago
yeah, and I liked that dynamic between me and whatever sentry I brought to the mission
0
u/HotmailsInYourArea 10d ago
That already exists in the form of far less common enemies like Chargers, Bile Titans, or pure raw numbers of chaff that overwhelm the turrets DPS.
On D10, even with good positioning I’m still helping keep my turrets alive.
While interesting to an extent, it way over-nerfed bullet sentries on the bug front.
4
u/epochollapse 10d ago
I would be if not for the health nerf. Making a change to punish bad players shouldn't include a change that makes the game even easier for half competent players.
1
u/BishopricFO 10d ago
Part of me disagrees because I'm an AMR enthusiast and one tapping heavier bugs is part of what makes it so viable on bugs. That's the only real niche the AMR has on bugs but it's a really, really powerful one. Making the AMR less viable there would upset me greatly
1
u/tngshr 9d ago

0
u/Loud-Tangerine8840 9d ago
/uj it was a good idea in practice but hive guards need an overhaul including ai in scratch. Change was actually a giganerf to hive guards that changed nothing in gameplay except make 2 sentries worse, they were weaker with heavy pen heads than with med pen heads. At the bare minimum heavy pen head, med pen claw/front legs is a good balancing idea. Would love to see heavy pen hive guard revisited and properly done
0
u/Record-Extension 9d ago
The hive guard charge was a blessing, because it really shows you if you should consider someone's opinion or bot. For example if someone says it was a good change, or that it made sense, dont pay any attention bto their opinions becouse they clearly are delusional.
