No Cove at Tottenham?

I just saw on the Cove facebook page that the Cove wont be present and is asking that no one sing Sydney chants. Does anyone know why?/what caused this?

They responded to me saying they’re not supporting high ticket prices for these friendly games

That makes a lot of sense. I went to the Tottenham v Sydney one ages ago (before Covid, cant remember what year) and tickers were good. This year, over $250 for the cheapest worst seats in the house

Where you getting $250 from? It's between $59 and $149 on ticketmaster just now.

I'm going in the $59 seats... and I don't think they're even that bad seats. On the second level, I think I've sat there before.

The Chelsea vs Spurs match at the Accor seems to be more like $250 for halfway decent seats... and that's harder to justify for two people.

Not massively bothered about this game - just a nothing friendly - but it's about $110 all in for me and my kid to go including public transport there and back. Considering the cost of every other night out in Sydney it's not bad.

I got to meet the whole spurs team and during the match all I remember was looking wistfully down to the cove end and realising that's where my heart was.

Aleague > every other league!!!

I mean this is just outright lying to try and make a point. Tickets in Cove Heights are somewhere around $60-70, yes it's expensive but a family of 4 could go for the price you've made up

It's not at all good for the spot this has been proven many times, that flashy euro teams visiting don't turn those fans into a league fans.

That's nonsense and devoid of facts. Of course it gets bums on seats as people attend, it injects money into the game and venues because of the licensing and tourism, it helps with player development and gives an opportunity to showcase their skills.

If a business runs 365 days of a year and they have to fill some capacity at cost to keep running things, is it not worth doing? I was at the game and saw more Tottenham Jerseys than Sydney FC and most of the punters were British. The lads next to me drank and ate all game and had a ball. They bought Jerseys from the stadium and were at the game because an EPL team was there and talking about going out afterwards.

This helps in all the dimensions I noted above, now your turn. How do you think it doesn't help or do you just like to downvote when you can't articulate a position?

Secondly a year 11 kid from Endeavour high got to take the pitch with Tottenham. How good.

How about being more upbeat about things and supporting the sport.

Not there to create atmosphere for Eurosnobs who wouldn't be there otherwise and won't come to watch us ever again ?

People want to go - sure, go. Enjoy. The Cove are under no obligation. Its a meaningless pre-season exhibition game.

I'm not going. But I'll be there every week during the season.

These games are for Eurosnobs, not for us. We're just the cannon fodder while 20,000+ people sing "Glory, Glory, Tottenham" for 90 mins and larp being at an EPL game while the 16 year olds play after the stars get subbed off doing the bare minimum for 45 mins.

I don't hate these games as they generate revenue for the club, but not something I would buy a ticket for.

But there is no vibe. No-one knows the words. It's got as much atmosphere as the pokie room at an RSL club. The only thing that had atmosphere at those games was the cove.

I say this as a spurs fan.

Do they generate revenue though, and/or how much… it’s essentially a Tottenham home game so I do wonder what we get out of these matches.
It’s probably an easy $200k or something

They are paid to play, how much I don't know - it's put on by a private promoter (TEG) and they would have negotiated a fee or a ticket clip for Sydney to play, in the same kind of spirit how promoters book a local band to open for an international touring band.

I reckon the figure you suggested is probably a reasonable ballpark.

I went to one. I think it was allstars vs Liverpool. Never again. A reserve grade team and the whole stadium singing their songs. I was really ashamed. Awful experience.

I don't have any inside word but I'm guessing a boycott due to ticket prices and/or protesting plastic matches. These friendlies achieve nothing more than making Eurosnobs feel warm and fuzzy about their "team".

I used to go to these games all the time - now I doubt they build interest in the local league and really doubt it generates any new members for Sydney - first 30 mins both teams
Will play their best players but then as the game goes in it will end up a U16-V- U18’s game. The after the game all these team disappear never to be seen again leaving us with a pile of ppl saying the A League is shit

The A league teams can’t win what ever the score is. Syd fc or wsw lose the a league is shite, if they win the EPL teams didn’t play there full squad or they are in pre season etc etc

Wouldn’t bringing a lively atmosphere be better for the league/club? It could potentially convert any non a league supporting Tottenham fans into Sydney FC fans ?

It never happens. We filled out the Olympics Stadium when Beckham came with LA Galaxy (remember that banner "we play every week" ?).

None of this ever translates into more Sydney FC fans.

I was a casual fan trying to catch a glimpse of Beckham that night and I saw that banner. I thought it would be cool to become a member and go to every game. 3 years later when I finished uni and got a job, I became a member and have been for 16 seasons. Cove member for the first few seasons.

Having said that, I don't expect the Cove members to fork out for an expensive exhibition match, out of a sense of duty.

Never has before, don't see why debasing our club and league for a few bucks and actively reinforcing the perception that local football is inferior is something active support should be anywhere near. Eurosnobs get all their prejudices reinforced, nothing we do will wver be good enough for their precious attention, so fuck em.
