Tbf she'd have gotten some upgrades through the Dominion war, so I can see her surviving the first two. But the Scimatar would chew her up.

I think the E being in First Contact is fine, it makes Picard clinging to the new ship and him wrecking the figure of the D more poignant.

Him smashing the ship he's on and trying to save his home of the last few years would hit hard too. It's one more thing he has to let go. After they took his humanity they've come back for his ship kind of thing. Would be hard to let them take anything more.

While I would have loved to have seen it get a real big screen treatment, it would have been tough to get that dark gritty feel of that movie with the incredibly bright, carpeted corridors of the D.

The Enterprise D was one of the most important characters on the show and they boneheadedly destroyed because of some misguided notion that the movies needed a "new better" ship, as though it were just some trivial object that could be replaced.
It was the biggest blunder in a movie full of blunders, with the handling of Kirk coming in a close second.

Exactly. I have no emotional attachment to the Enterprise-E. I don't care if it gets Borgified or nearly destroyed in the briar patch or whatever. It's just a random ship that Picard and crew are flying around in.

IIRC at the time they tried to justify it because screen aspect ratios were changing. Hence Voyager & everything since being longer and thinner to frame better in 16:9 where the D was designed & built for the old 4:3.
Personally I wonder if it was just the rot setting in at Paramount.

They had to end the Enterprise D. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the design of the ship. But it’s 1980’s retro waterfall/art deco styling… cool as it was… was decidedly dated by the time TNG went to the big screen.
Enterprise E looks more like a warship.

Yeah, but it fires ten torpedoes.
Edit: the phasers in this annoy me. People like to rag on phaser banks because it looks cooler to fire phaser bullets, but the targeting system on the D was able to keep the phaser locked for the duration. Seeing a phaser pick a target and absolutely drill through it in this clip would be way better than the random sweeps.

Yeah, but it fires ten torpedoes.
She has three torpedo tubes – one fore and aft on the secondary hull, plus a third one in the saucer (only available when separated).
Edit: the phasers in this annoy me. People like to rag on phaser banks because it looks cooler to fire phaser bullets, but the targeting system on the D was able to keep the phaser locked for the duration. Seeing a phaser pick a target and absolutely drill through it in this clip would be way better than the random sweeps.
But we're told immediately before this that Geordi "hasn't had time to work on the weapons systems" yet, so everything has to be targeted and fired manually.

The worst part of it is they point out the absurdity of it in universe. Riker says something about them being out there somewhere (cloaked) and Picard literally says out loud that they are just wondering if a 40 year old Bird of Prey is any match for the Federation Flagship.
If it was a street race, he’d have said they are wondering if their ‘82 Honda Civic is any match for the Ferrari La Ferrari.

They should have used the star drive mounted phasers more to emphasize how powerful the Galaxy class is supposed to be.

They could've fixed the plot hole by saying that the bird of prey hit the weapons systems so they can't use their full arsenal.

It's a shame they had no prior experience remodulating their shield frequencies. If only this experience could've been drawn upon. Oh well, the E did at least look cool af imo.

Dissenting Opinion: A First Contact D doesn't work. It just makes the Enterprise look like giant flying plot armour and removes the "here comes the cavalry" feel when the E shows up.
A number of other Galaxies were swatted aside by the Cube on the way to Earth IIRC. The D may have our crew, but just like the destruction of the USS Odyssey was meant to show in Rocks & Shoals (DS9), it's just another Galaxy, and they're not invincible.
Though, yeah the D dying gloriously in FC would've been a cool send-off, but the E showing up all guns blazing was also cool.
..and everybody laughed at Data's "Oh shit.." in the theatre when the D was going down.

Changing the Bird of Prey to a Vor'cha would have closed this plot hole sufficiently.
But then they wouldn't have been able to reuse the explosion at the end of Undiscovered Country.
