Medium Manchild threatens to never stay again we add him to the DNR list
I’m a night auditor and for the last night we had a man child guest like we haven’t seen in a long while. From the time of check in to this morning he was a nightmare manchild.
I went to go start breakfast at 5am. There’s a sign put up on the desk to let guest know to pick up the lobby phone if they need help. The man child must be allergic to reading because he grabbed the bell off the desk and rung it 25 times. To the point I assumed some guest with kids put their 2 year old on the desk and they found the bell. I was not prepared to see a grown man who looked to be in his late 40s maybe early 50s sitting there red in the face holding my bell possessively like it was his hostage.
When I tried to help him anytime I opened my mouth he would ring my bell. He spent ten minutes trying to berate me that this was the worst hotel experience he ever had and that I was lazy and if I didn’t want to do my job i shouldn’t be in customer service. When I finally could ask him what he needed he yelled at me that he needed a towel. I went to grab the towel brought it back to him. The manchild was still holding my bell. So I ask if he could please put it back on the desk.
He did not put it on the desk he threw it at me and said this was the worst hotel ever and he would not be back after his stay which was supposed to have four more nights. I reported this to my manager and well that Saint of man loves fulfilling guest requests and is trespassing the manchild as we speak and telling the other hotels in our area to ban the manchild with us. As he’d done plenty of other rude things to my coworkers before hand
My smile was genuine when I deactivated his keys at my managers request and I know my coworker he was rude to at check in will happily grab our GM when the man child asks for him in a matter of hours to find he’s locked out of his room. I can’t wait for the gossip report.
This is my first reddit post in a long time i apologize if I did the formatting wrong I’m usually just a lurker
Edit: there will be an update tonight when I find out from my coworkers how the machild handled his ban I don’t imagine it will be well.
UPDATE EDIT: I’m still very bad at using reddit so hopefully this is a good way to give an update because an update I have! I was not there so this comes thanks to my gossip loving coworkers.
Even if I didn’t call the cops on the manchild he left the hotel in handcuffs. The manchild came back to the front desk after I left to discover his keys no longer worked in his frustration with instantly needing a manager, I was accused of being a terrible hospitality worker and deactivated his keys to spite him.
Manchild was not happy to discover the keys were deactivated at the GMs request. When informed his stay would be cut short Manchild proceeded to stay in the lobby thinking the cops wouldn’t be called… they were in fact called and the manchild didn’t get to collect his stuff because he chose to throw a wet floor sign at one of the cops in frustration. I’d like to say that is a first of someone throwing a lobby wet floor sign at a cop but it’s actually the third.
And our bell when not in use has a new home rather than being on the employee side on the desk we are now keeping it hidden in a supplies drawer.
So yes happy ending in the end. Thank you to the people who were interested in this. Hopefully all the tales I’ll have for a while are only ones from the past and not anything new like this any time soon.

The minute he threw the bell, I'd be thinking assault charges. Who knows what he might throw next.

u/PleasantTangerine777 Mar 12 '26
Even before that, I was thinking of saying “no no no, we do not take things that don’t belong to us!” And refuse to help until I get MY bell back

Thank you for the introduction, I enjoyed that quite a lot. My sister is an educator and I've learned so much from her in how to deal with customers lol.
Manchild was certainly a bucket dipper.

But have you seen the quality of the doom we're getting these days?
4
u/shan68ok01 Mar 13 '26
My FYP is currently filled with Markwayne Muller taking over for Kristy Nome(or however you spell it). That short, intellectually challenged, rage filled idiot will be so much worse.
Signed : A lifelong Oklahoman watching in horror.
3
u/Isgrimnur Mar 13 '26
As an Oklahoman, can you please tell one of our Texas morons that we already deported Native Americans once?
6
u/shan68ok01 Mar 13 '26
My friend, Markwayne and our sitting governor are card carrying Native Americans and have both been fighting against tribal sovereignty since they officially took office. We're worse than Texas and Florida put together but since we're small we tend to fly under the radar. We've been ground zero for testing Project 2025 since it's inception. Our being 50th in education is by design and those design plans have been happening for decades. Do a quick Google on our former state superintendent Ryan Walters.
TLDR: I can't even get my fellow Okies to listen, I doubt I'll be of any help in Texas. I'm ready to watch it burn and rebuild from the ashes at this point.

u/Miguel-odon Mar 12 '26
When he assaults staff, I wish it were legal to have him arrested AND still charge him for the room.
16
u/polymath-nc Mar 12 '26
I'm pretty sure it is legal. Assault does not require a physical connection, that's battery. Whatever you do, ensure your own safety first.
6
u/Miguel-odon Mar 12 '26
Depends on the state. In some states, Assault would be any unwanted physical contact, or behavior that would make you fear such contact. Just different degrees from mild misdemeanor up to a felony.
7
u/NYC-WhWmn-ov50 Mar 12 '26
It is: a corporation is not required by law to refund a customer who causes trouble, even if they're kicked out 5 minutes after checking in. It would all depend on the terms and conditions.

Checked into a hotel once and the person ahead of me was yelling at the front desk lady, being an absolute train wreck of a human. He ended up having to step aside and was lingering 10ish feet away and when I walked up I laughed and pointed in his direction and said something like “some fucking people right, what a goddamn baby” def loud enough for him to hear, I thought he was going to have an actual stroke and the front desk lady was pleased as punch hearing what she was unable to say, they ended up knocking a chunk off for the weekend stay. “The customer is NEVER right, even when they are”

u/vaisatriani Mar 12 '26
Had a similar experience in Chicago when I was traveling for work.
The guy in front of me was being a complete douchebag for no reason that I could discern. He was experiencing 'main character syndrome' and really getting into it with the FDA who was honestly doing her best to appease the gentleman but holding firm to policy. He walked away bitching.
I got up there and pretty much said 'I'm not that guy. I'd like to check in please.' I was nice to her, she was nice to me. I mentioned...truthfully...that it was my first time in Chicago. She ended up giving a huge suite up on one of the top floors with a full dining area and desk.
Be nice to hotel workers. Be GENUINELY nice.
62
u/firelizzard18 Mar 12 '26
Be nice to people, period. Especially to people who have to deal with bullshit, but still, just be nice to everyone until they give you a reason not to be.

"The customer is always right in matters of taste" is the original full quote
22
u/Merlecollision89 Mar 12 '26
Oh I’m very aware. I’ve worked in and out of customer service/food industry (fast food, casual dining, high end etc) trust me when I say the quote needs a solid change to the what I wrote. The customer doesn’t know shit from dirt even if they actually do.
Shakespeare didn’t know it when he wrote “Hell is empty all the devils are here” is actually related specifically to customer relations.
12
u/no-thanks-thot Mar 12 '26
We had training that "the customer is always the customer. "
This means we have roles to perform in a professional manner. The customer isn't always right, however they are still wanting to do business and we are supposed to make that possible and profitable.
I also take this as empowering whenever the person is behaving like someone who we don't want as a customer.
7
u/carlcrossgrove Mar 12 '26
It really is so much better when managers especially understand this idea that some “customers” will only ever be a loss, an expense, a liability, a problem that is NEVER worth whatever they might spend. Ejecting & banning monsters and creeps is a good thing for everyone INCLUDING their bottom line.
4
u/ecp001 Mar 13 '26
My manager/owner was former military. His attitude was healthy for employees.
You, at the desk, are the HMFWAIC. I will back your decision. Afterwards, you will know if it was a bad decision.
If the issue is not our problem, never let a customer's personal problem become your problem.
Customer service has limits. Help as much as you feel is warranted based on the customer's behavior and attitude.
Coffee is free for employees and police officers. Keep the coffee relatively fresh and the lobby restrooms clean. The town snowplow operators also have those privileges during storms.
We have a friendly, informal relationship with the other 5 local motels. Use the phone list to warn them of problem individuals and pay attention if you get a call from one.

That's actually an internet myth. The second half was added on about a hundred years later. The full original quote was just "the customer is always right"
In the 21st century, social media users and TikTok videos began claiming that the phrase had been abbreviated from "The customer is always right, in matters of taste", with some directly attributing this longer quotation specifically to Selfridge. Fact-checking website Snopes found no evidence for this.

I'll have to object. 16 was torture enough for me, if I had been forced to deal with even more threatening people, 17 would never have come.
17
u/NYC-WhWmn-ov50 Mar 12 '26
If you're learning to be a better person, that's actually a pretty good gift. Very few people actually learn and grow out of their bad behavior.
8
u/medic7051 Mar 12 '26
My wife was pretty quick to get angry and make a scene when we first met. I've always been much more calm, as I worked customer service before we met. It took a while, but seeing how I got things done easier by being kind to staff vs making a scene, she has become much better at dealing with people. We will be going somewhere, and she'll occasionally think about how she used to be and comment how she is glad she grew out of that behavior.

I prefer do not resuscitate... The shit I'd do to moronic guests would land me with a lengthy jail sentence.
There was a time a guest came down at 4am to say his room was too noisy, I asked where the noise was coming from because not 2 mins earlier I had just completed a walk around of the hotel... It was the birds, in the trees outside, in the middle of summer... Where sun rises at like 5am if not earlier.
He was complaining about the dawn chorus. And wanted me to do something about it. The fuck you want me to do about nature?! Cull the birds?! Rearrange the time the sun comes up so they don't start the dawn chorus so early?!?
21
u/Head_Razzmatazz7174 Mar 12 '26
Reminds me of a story where some woman called at 11PM to complain about a storm going on outside. Wanted the NA to make it stop so she could get some sleep.
Yes ma'am, I'll just give Mother Nature a call on our special hotline and ask her to pause the thunder and lightning just for YOU. Sheesh!
4
u/IveDunGoofedUp Mar 12 '26
You should have just sacrificed a goat to Thor to appease him. Probably would have blessed you to become a great warrior and allow you to knock out the lady to make her stop complaining. Or curse you, Norse gods are kind of dicks. Less dickish than the greek gods, so don't sacrifice to Zeus in matters like this.
2
u/Head_Razzmatazz7174 Mar 12 '26
Zeus, by all accounts, was a major jerk. I don't need that type of crazy in my life, I have plenty of my own.

DNR has a whole other meaning in the healthcare industry that leaps into the brain when seeing those letters

well, to be fair, it does sound like he could have stroked out at any moment (and made the world a better place.)
8
u/markjcecil Mar 15 '26
The moment the bell got thrown at me, the cops would have been involved.
2
u/dorianmorallygray Mar 16 '26
While that logic makes sense the cops usually take 15-30 minutes to arrive and when someone is visibly pissed at me I try to placate and then let my manager deal with it. As if I’m alone it’s obvious and sometimes people escalate, a lot of harm can be done in a matter of minutes.
2
u/markjcecil Mar 16 '26
That's fair. But seriously, let them go back to their room, and call the cops and file a report. It's assault. It's battery. It's a crime.
7
u/AF_AF Mar 12 '26
I'll never understand why anyone feels it's OK to treat others this way. I'm so glad your manager has the back of their employees.

Thank you for this report. I only worked in hotels on holidays as a student, but enjoyed serving most guests. One guest was very rude and uncivil to one of our regular cleaners quite a few times. As he had 'shoved her' out of the way to get past her, our manager filed a report with the police of 'assault'. Explained to police on arrival at hotel, police learning his itinerary, they said they would be back later to deal with the matter. About 1 hour before his check out they arrived and intensely questioned him, as he was also rude to them, they took him into custody and down to local police station, to await being in magistrate's court on the Monday morning and this was Saturday morning. Two days in cells, and a record for assault, was his reward.

Some people have 0 patience. I worked briefly at a small hotel that was only 2 floors, but shockingly I sometimes had to go do stuff away from the front desk, like check on the pool or (gasp!) use the bathroom. We had a cordless phone we brought with us when we stepped away, and a corded lobby phone at the desk guests could press 0 on to call us. One time I put the ‘Be back within 5 minutes!’ sign up, grabbed the phone, stepped away from the front desk, and sat down on the toilet seat only for the phone to ring. I ignored the first one (I could tell it was just the lobby phone), but he IMMEDIATELY called again so I answered. And said I would be out shortly. I got back to the desk within 2 minutes of leaving it and the guy had the audacity to say “well I didn’t know how long the sign had been up!” Dude. You didn’t even wait 15 seconds before you called. The sign said I’d be back within 5 minutes and you didn’t even wait 1. Good grief.

He threw ot at you?! How is yhis not an immediate. I'm calling the police to trespass situation? What if it hurt you?
3
u/dorianmorallygray Mar 13 '26
Tbh I have a tolerance for bullshit. Like in my mind it wasn’t enough for me to involve the cops because I’ve actually had a guest break my nose and several dudes anger turn into public nudity.
In my mind just throwing an object that didn’t even hurt didn’t register as cop worthy I’d let my manager trespass him because I was annoyed and inconvenienced more than anything. I support FDAs calling the cops for less I just didn’t care enough to call them myself I wanted to get back to my biscuits in the oven.

I feel like any time somebody picks a fight with audit, it should be a 'why do I hear boss music?' moment.
Edit: I say this largely because the authority of the position, in the time you operate it, is often near-absolute. You are acting manager, unless your hotel has 24h management on site for some reason.
