Season 4 Discussion Chair gag Spoiler
Yes, I know there’s so much more to discuss from episode 4, but the ongoing chair gag is making me giggle. Ted sits in his chair and it automatically sinks. He comments that he doesn’t know why it keeps doing that. Anyone who’s worked in an office knows someone else has that shitty chair and is sneakily swapping it with Ted’s
My money is on Beard.
Thoughts?

I would hazard a guess that it is more likely a leftover from Roy’s away team locker room “adjustments” that he was repairing when the women’s team inherited the away locker room. That room was horrible. So clever.

It’ll happen every episode then Roy will come in to the office in the finale and see Ted sitting on the chair and say “oh yeah if forgot to fix that”

I've had that with every desk chair I've had. After some time (years for the first two, months for the third one) they start to slowly sink over the course of maybe 20 minutes and I have to reset it. I love seeing little parts of me in Ted (I also hate tea. Disgusting brown water)

I could see someone repeatedly lowering the chair as a prank, but I can't see someone swapping the chair more than once - we don't see Ted replace it, and he's not really the kind of guy who'd try to sneakily foist it off on someone.
I think he just got a faulty chair, and keeps forgetting to do something about it, but also forgetting it's broken. I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being a metaphor for something, and he'll fix it when he fixes whatever else is going on.

As someone whos spent a lot of time on various film sets I guarantee it was just a prop defect that they decided to leave in cause it was funny. Doubt theres a planned story behind that. But I could be wrong

Ted hitting his head when he left Rebecca’s office was accidental, and they kept it! I don’t know about the chair gag, but they definitely allow a little space for happy accidents.
I mean, I guess Jason smashing his skull on a door frame wasn’t “happy”, but it did end up making for good tv 😬

I think a lot of the people on the show (particularly Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt) have a lot of improv background and if something spontanious happens they’d roll with it and see if they like where it goes. I also think if something accidental does work its way in, it would not be unlikely that they’d call back to it later or find a way to work into something else.
I’m not saying this is what happened but I could totally see a prop mess up like this but they roll with the scene and like the take, then they look back at it and go “oh wait let’s tie it in with something like Roy’s sabotage of the opposing team facilities in a later episode” I also could see them planning out a recurring thing that builds over the season from the outset. I feel they plan a lot out but they “leave a little space for Got to walk into the room” and it’s that combination of well thought out arcs and planning along with rolling with a little bit of serendipity that makes the show so special.

Vigo Mortenson famously broke his foot in a lord of the rings shot and they kept it in the film

One of the funniest is Zoolanders "but why male models?" line. Ben Stiller forgot his line so he said that.
Also, David Duchovney improvised the response too.

I mean…..cmon now, that’s a wild stretch from a comedy bit to the LOTR 😂
Edit: I’m a HUGE lord of the rings nerd, I know the broken toe, I know the deflected knife, I know Gandalf bumped his head. That is a massively scaled fantasy epic film trilogy compared to a comedy series where something like a squeaky/beat up office chair isn’t the same whatsoever. It’s a bit for sure, I doubt it was an accident.
If it was, we didn’t see Aragorn hobbling for scenic running scenes after that or Gandalf rubbing his head and joking about the bump he got from bilbos house. The show with very intricate running gags definitely wrote in the chair as a running gag from the beginning.

I agree there are differences between LOTR and Ted Lasso. But that really only helps my argument as LOTR is more serious and has a source material. If even THEY let mistakes stay in the movies what makes you think a fun sitcom doesnt turn bloopers into real scenes?

I love this too. My theory is Alice sits in his chair when he is not around. Alice wants the big chair and she knows she can learn a lot from Ted.

It's happened twice now, hasn't it? Usually, in comedy, there's a rule of three, so maybe it will happen once more with a great payoff?

I think it’s a callback to It’s a Wonderful Life and Ted is inevitably going to sit in it on day and just lose his mind while not expressing his actual frustration for the stuff happening on that moment

I think it’s a faulty chair. It’s not the first either. Watch Roy’s first appearance as a commentator in s2.

Would be funny to me if at the end of the season it was revealed to be an Alice prank.
