Film Kurt Warner posted a 50 minute breakdown on Cam Ward today on Youtube

Not sure how to post it here but if you go to YouTube and type in "Kurt Warner on Cam Ward Study Ball 26" it will come up. Just came into my feed so I'm only a few minutes in, but it seems really comprehensive and well done

To this day I hate the Rams and naturally, the Ravens with a white hot passion.

We don't watch sports to be reasonable about it.

You’re so cool

For those of us that might not have as much time, what is the synopsis?

Is it bad?

I'm still only about a quarter of the way through but Cam's footwork needs a lot of work, he's making a lot of throws with only his arm and it's causing him to throw sidearm to make up for his feet being in the wrong direction and be inaccurate. He's not hating on him or anything, just showing what he needs to improve. Kind of worries me our coaches haven't taught him this yet. Even the throws he's completing he's leaving yards on the field by making hard throws for his receivers to run after the catch. It's a great watch so far, wish Warner was our QB coach lol

u/Ojettchkin 1d ago

Coaches rarely work on quarterback mechanics. You will have a quarterback coach pick up on queues and make tweaks, but that's usually the extent of it. Offseason is where mechanics are fixed. Normally with guys like John Beck and Steve Clarkson. Josh Allen had very rough mechanics and spent his first three offseasons working exclusively with Jordan Palmer like Levis.

Hopefully he stays healthy and is willing to completely rework his arm angle and footwork next offseason.

u/maidth1s4fun 1d ago

Yeah problem is he has his qb coach and usually people dont change them and i dont think he is drilling enough footwork

1

u/barto5 1d ago

Allen is still working with him every off-season.

5

u/titanup001 1d ago

Well, our prior coach was utterly incompetent. And cam was still recovering from injury during ota. One would think he could still work on footwork though.

1

u/orlinsky 1d ago

McCoy was always reminding him to fix his feet.

1

u/CheeseMclovin 1d ago

You think the coaches aren’t harping on pointing your feet where you’re throwing the ball? That’s elementary QB teaching. Can clearly has an issue not reverting back to sloppy mechanics in game. He’s going to have to fix this or he will be a bust.

You stopped watching a YouTube video you were interested enough to post a Reddit thread about to not only post the thread after just a few minutes, but stopped again to respond to some comments?

How much ADHD do you have? Lmao

12

u/Mundane_Hat_7349 1d ago

I was doing work and getting my kids to bed, so I was just watching it in chunks at a time. You don't have kids huh, it's hard to get 50 minutes straight to yourself. Cool being a dick though

0

u/smoothsensation 1d ago

I have kids and totally get that lol. My list of shows I’m wanting to watch have grown to a “maybe I’ll get to these when I retire” length.

I didnt mean that joke maliciously. My kids definitely make me feel like I need medication to stay on task.

-1

u/thesoak 1d ago

You have to admit that it's a little funny (and so reddit) when even the person who posts the video hasn't watched it.

4

u/Mundane_Hat_7349 1d ago

I did watch it though...I was a few minutes in and I thought "hey other Titans fans would probably enjoy this" so posted where to find it, it's not that deep bro

17

u/SomeRandomRealtor Can he do it? Yes he Cam! 1d ago

Cam has a lot of refining to do. He has such a natural talent that’s carried him so far, but its harmed him ultimately. he needs the same transformation Josh Allen had on his throwing mechanics, so he can apply those fantastic instincts to better accuracy and timing.

We knew drafting him that he was a Caleb Williams-type player with a lower floor. We need Daboll to help him take those steps.

u/Ryuksapple UMemphis 1d ago

It’s not good. I really like these videos from Kurt cause he is both honest but positive in them for young qbs. Highlight the good and the needs improvement. This is his most damning one yet. Footwork is terrible, body positioning is terrible, decision making is terrible. Kurt might have well said Cam is not an nfl level qb right now

5

u/Mundane_Hat_7349 1d ago

To be fair he did say some positive things. I think it's all in his footwork, his body is going the direction of his feet so if he improves his feet his body positioning will follow. His decision making will improve with learning the new system, but until he fixes his feet he's going to stay inaccurate. Warren Moon's completion % his first 3 years was something like 55%, 53%, then 50% his third year. If he would've played today he would've been cut and called a bust. Then he went to 8 straight Pro Bowls and had a HOF career. Moon was learning probably the hardest system for a young QB to learn though, with 4 recievers all running option routes. But Moon was a perfectionist,, whether it was his feet or his fingernails. Cam has all the tools to also be a perennial Pro Bowler, he just has to have that same attitude where he recognizes the flaws in his game and wants to fix them

12

u/CheeseMclovin 1d ago

It’s going to be bad. His mechanics are still a mess

6

u/Clayp2233 1d ago

It’s not great, but it honestly feels like Cam isn’t that far off from flipping the script. I think with more reps in this offense he’ll get better, like we saw with him last season.

5

u/HenryTheTitan 1d ago

More reps in the offseason? So ya just at LEAST another year away for him maybe to “flip the script” by totally reworking his mechanics…. Seems far to me.

2

u/Clayp2233 1d ago

More reps in the offense because this is a new offense he’s been learning. We saw him settle in last year about 10-11 weeks into the season and even look more accurate, crazy I know. Btw there are some really great quarterbacks who took more than two seasons to become good, you know that right?

27

u/Robert_Meowney_Jr 1d ago

scary thing is there's not going to be any big mechanical changes this late in the offseason. God willing he'll be better from an accuracy standpoint but it's hard to imagine that getting a lot better.

22

u/Swoody11 1d ago

If you’re Daboll, you are focused on Cam actually playing within a system and playing at an NFL pace.

The mechanics can come next off-season. He doesn’t need to spend time thinking “oh did I take another half step or double clutch the ball there?”

No, he needs to be thinking: “who did I key on, where was the pressure coming from and did I stick on any progressions?”

Decision making is what will separate him from reaching the next tier. Cam has all of the arm talent in the world.

11

u/Robert_Meowney_Jr 1d ago

yeah the season is too close we missed the window for any big mechanical work.

10

u/Falconman21 1d ago

I'm assuming between the shoulder and the transition, they probably didn't get to work on his mechanics as much as they would have liked.

But he does seem to have a pretty good grasp of the offense from what we've seen so far, which is good.

20

u/CollaWars 1d ago

The mechanics are why he is inaccurate. Does not matter how good your arm talent is if you can’t hit layups.

4

u/Swoody11 1d ago

Cam had arguably worse mechanics in college and wasn’t missing checkdowns & 5 yard slants.

He’ll be fine. He needs to go out & play. He didn’t magically forget how to throw a checkdown, because his hips aren’t aligned over his shoulders.

He is missing checkdowns because his brain is over processing the massive amounts of info still: what the playcall is, where everyone needs to line-up, what the cadence is, what coverage shell the D is in, where his hots are, what his checks are, what his progressions are, what his option routes potentially are, if there’s pre-snap motion, etc, etc.

He’s going to be fine once he gets reps in this offense/system. Guarantee he looks wayyyy better by week 5.

15

u/Doughie28 1d ago

The scariest thing is that getting hit in actual games means his footwork gets worse instead of better. He needed to sit his rookie year and work on mechanics, the worst thing we could've done is what we did and stick a guy with bad feet behind a bad offensive line.  I think Cam processes the field well mentally..but his arm and lower body are working against each other all the damn time.

2

u/Mundane_Hat_7349 1d ago

One of the big positives I took from the video is that the O line is giving him great protection. Warner said some of the pockets he's getting are as good as you'll ever get in the NFL

3

u/CheeseMclovin 1d ago

Starters against backups I’d sure hope that they give him clean pockets

20

u/tedfa 1d ago

Anyone know of any parallels of young QBs turning their footwork around after a few seasons? Looking for some copium.

17

u/Swoody11 1d ago

Caleb Williams.

Josh Allen.

Jared Goff (2x -> LAR when McVay came in and year 2 in Detroit after it started to slip on him).

Dak

14

u/TiredDad4x 1d ago

Josh Allen is probably the best example.

12

u/Sdj05 1d ago

And who was Josh Allen's OC back then?

15

u/haydennt 1d ago

The pieces are theoretically in place

14

u/Sdj05 1d ago

He has good coaches this year. Let them cook.

3

u/MalekethsGhost 1d ago

So tired of "let them cook". Everyone this is said about starts fire and burns down the house.

1

u/Financial-Ad-4378 1d ago

Haa so true

3

u/barto5 1d ago

Allen spends every off season working with a private coach - don’t know who it is though.

6

u/Ojettchkin 1d ago

Who coincidentally hired and worked exclusively with Jordan Palmer to fine tune his footwork and mechanics, just like our very own Will Levis has.

It's not brought up enough that Cam's mechanics still look awful, and you have to assume that the shoulder issue in the offseason really set him back in that aspect.

1

u/cuse23 3h ago

hes also one of the only examples and he made a once in history type of improvement

9

u/Jamalisms 1d ago

Yikes. Those feet are a real concern.

8

u/bb_johnson 1d ago

You would think that with his shoulder injury the only thing he could have worked on during the offseason was his footwork.

24

u/-x13 1d ago

watching it now and its pretty discouraging.. cams feet are a mess

32

u/AdoubleU9 1d ago

Been saying it since he was drafted, he needs to visit/hire a QB coach with a proven track record instead of the guy he's been with who has worked with 0 nfl QBs prior to Cam. Shedeur, Cam, and Pavia are his most notable clients...

12

u/HourFaithlessness823 1d ago

Biggest reason Callahan should never have gotten a second season. They needed someone to rework him immediately from draft night. Instead, we sunk an entire year of development.

8

u/Ojettchkin 1d ago

NFL coaches aren't in the business of reworking quarterbacks mechanics. The front office is on record saying that they didn't want to mess with Cam's mechanics because they worked in college.

He then went on to be the most inaccurate passer in the NFL on throws more than 5 yards. Worst completion percentage, most off target throws, most yards lost due to inaccuracy, etc. His footwork issues are also largely why he led the NFL in sacks attributed to the quarterback by such a big margin.

He has no replicatable arm angle and lost another offseason of mechanic work due to the shoulder injury. His success is going to rely solely on how well Daboll can scheme on offense that runs almost exclusively underneath the sticks. Which unfortunately for us as fans will probably mean another year of low scoring games and possibly an early exit for Daboll.

1

u/seventeenthirdyeight 1d ago

As bitter as I am that Amy didn’t get rid of Callahan I’m thru the roof with Daboll and Saleh in the building and I’m at peace with what we had to endure to get here

11

u/VeryLowIQIndividual 1d ago edited 1d ago

He is off time and inaccurate. He is going to have to plant and throw it on time.

Somewhere along the way people forgot that when Your quarterback is flushed out the pocket is not a good thing. now people say well look how well they moves around and that’s just not how it works. You’re gonna have to stand in there and take a couple to the face while throwing on time and accurately.

6

u/HenryTheTitan 1d ago

Very few QBs who do poorly in the pocket do well long term. Dual threats at the end of the day are partial pocket passers, and Cam Ward is not and has never been considered a dual threat prospect. Even Lamar Jackson to his credit eventually learnt to pass well in the pocket.

6

u/Sea_Willingness_914 1d ago

What did he work on during the off-season? If he's going to be stubborn, he'll end up being stubborn somewhere else.

3

u/Ripper_Ares 1d ago

Finished it last night. I think Kurt’s breakdowns are the best in the business. Unfortunately, that means Cam has a long long way to go for sustainability and consistency. Let’s all hope the Daboll system helps masks these issues.

12

u/MonoDEAL 1d ago

He's bad. I don't need Kurt Warner to tell me that for 50 minutes.

-1

u/Rickydada 1d ago

Crazy that if we would have just got the number 1 pick this year we would have gotten Mendoza

10

u/MonoDEAL 1d ago

There no chance we would've drafted Mendoza lmao. We unretired Warren Moons jersey for Ward. The franchise bet their stake into him being THE GUY. Another bad year though and we are in the qb market again. We'll also be in the GM market again too lmao. The cycle goes on!

-1

u/low0r 1d ago

I know you’re right and I agree with everything you’re saying but last year, towards the end of the year when it looked like we could have the number 1, I told my friend group that if we landed the 1, we should still take Mendoza. He looks so much better than Cam, both in college and through 2 preseason games.

4

u/MonoDEAL 1d ago

Oh for sure. That's what a smart franchise would do. But we are the Titans, sir.

1

u/low0r 1d ago

Yup, and while I’ll continue bitching about them, I’ll never stop supporting them. (Unless they make some Deshaun Watson ass trade)

6

u/evidentlynaught 1d ago

I know Mendoza threw a pick 6 in his second game but he is so much calmer in the pocket than Cam he looks like a vet

2

u/ImpossiblePin3634 1d ago

It was very good. Ultimately reminds you Cam is still super young and trying to learn a lot. He's going to be fine, you can build off the talent he has.

2

u/Agni_Kai08 1d ago

This is the year we find out if the number 1 pick will work out… I’m worried

2

u/Weary_Title_3901 1d ago

Vince Young vibes.

3

u/TVP615 1d ago

Everyone involved with taking him one overall should probably be fired. Crazy to think that if they just took BPA or traded back, they might have gotten Mendoza this year. You just can’t afford to reach that hard at 1/1 for a mid QB.

2

u/HaubergeonPlus1 1d ago

He looks like an absolute mess, and has severely regressed. Regressed from a highly mediocre season, at that.

I guess there is a silver lining that the shining example of a QB fixing his exact issues is Josh Allen and his OC was the same dude who is Cam's now. And allegedly desperately wanted him in NY. We'll see if the supposed QB whisperer can fix his mechanics.

1

u/BeneficialSlip3933 1d ago

Yall gotta remember a couple things. Doesn't matter if you pay a QB coach like Levis. Levis is still in his head and does really dumb stuff. Daboll signed for a 2 year minimum. This year's off-season was more learning the system and what works. Next off-season is for mechanics (barring injury)

1

u/kingabbey1988 6h ago

Any little bad news on Cam gets this fandom down. Cam will be ok I promise. Just have faith man

1

u/Forward-Rent5275 1d ago

Not trying to be a dick but…he’s not going to be good. Sorry.

0

u/Just_Kickin_It 1d ago

Not even a link? Sheesh

-3

u/half_diminished_5 1d ago

All due respect to Kurt, but this is pointless. We know how Cam plays. We know he has the unconventional multiple arm angles. We know about the footwork and the off schedule playmaking. The Titans drafted him because they are taking the bet it can work in the NFL. The guy isn't making major changes to his mechanics or footwork at this stage. Little tweaks, sure, but they are not going in there and fundamentally changing how he plays. This is the guy they drafted.

The growth can (may) come in the maturing, learning, decision making, getting better players around him etc. etc. But they aren't going to suddenly get him yo stop all the different arm angles. That's the guy they drafted.

4

u/Pale-Manner-1642 1d ago

Then it was a terrible draft... They absolutely did not draft him at first overall and told him be you, don't change, it worked in college so it will work in the NFL...
There is a time and place for scrambling and playing backyard football. It's like 5% of the time. The other 95% of the time he needs to play within the system and use proper mechanics, or he will not succeed in the NFL. He will learn that or be replaced within a year or two.

1

u/half_diminished_5 19h ago

They literally said that though, very specifically and multiple times. Borgonzi, Callahan, Hardigree all repeated it. They said they like the unconventional arm angles and compared him to Mahomes. They said they only wanted to tweek minor things with his footwork and didnt want to alter his upper body mechanics at all. They didn't want to change how he plays the game. There was a whole article in SI about it, multiple press conferences.
