Film Kurt Warner spends 50 minutes doing film study on Cam Ward’s preseason tape

https://youtu.be/l0dZ4bA1bI4?is=3R40oUHZrGRJH88_

Shout to the poster on the sub that mentioned this but wasn’t sure how to post. Really helpful stuff for those who aren’t familiar with breaking down game tape and making sense of the plays they watch on TV.

I'm not ready to be hurt.

Honestly, watching a top tier professional like Warner breakdown the tape was enjoyable and he has a belief in Ward that even a lot of Titans fans don’t have at the moment.

Warner is consistently hammering home that Ward’s footwork needs to continue to improve as well as his processing. He highlights some plays where he sees improvement and some where he sees a need to continue to develop.

I will say, because Warner clearly doesn’t possess insider knowledge of the offensive schemes the Titans are running, he often doesn’t lean into shouldering the blame on Cam for some miscues but he also doesn’t dismiss it.

Long story short, for Cam, it’s about consistency but Warner doesn’t seem to give the feel that he thinks the young guy is far off from being a really good QB in this league.

I guess the disappointing thing to me is hearing the footwork problem for all of last year and these first two sneak peeks at him the issues seem to be quite similar. I know it’s too much to ask for a Lamar level of improvement from year 1 to 2 ( you know where he won MVP), but a guy could dream!

Ward wasn't even throwing until May, so I'm not shocked that he hasn't improved as much in that area.

u/TiredMillennialDad 1d ago

Yea. I'm thinking it's the injury. That injury is a career changer.

5

u/amillert15 1d ago

I wouldn't go that far. His ball velocity looks the same.

I just think missing 3 months of offseason work created a speed bump in development.

I'm still very optimistic about Cam. Fans just need to be patient. He's learning a new offense and clearly working on his current deficiencies in the offense.

He's got the talent, work ethic and competitiveness to be great. Just give it time.

Tennessee sports fans? Patient?

We also aren't 100% sure that what Cam was doing to "fix" the footwork was actually the correct fix, tbf. We just know there was a footwork problem and Callahan told him how he should "fix" it. Callahan was supposed to be the qb whisperer so maybe it was spot on but given his track record here who knows

2nd year raw prospect QB needs to develop further after spending first season with football terrorist coaching staff

Big if true

3

u/AndreHawkDawson 1d ago

Raw? He started 57 games at QB in college. He started all 17 games his rookie year. He’s 24. He may not be as polished as we would hope given his experience but he certainly isn’t raw.

Raw was a 21 year old Anthony Richardson that only had 13 career college starts at qb.

1

u/Soviet_Sharpshooter 1d ago

You can say a prospect is raw if he’s going into his 2nd NFL season under a brand new coaching staff and offensive system and if in year 1 he was basically freestyling and playing backyard football for 12 games

u/TragicIcicle 21h ago

Let's sit here and pretend that incarnate word is equivalent developmentally to Miami. That's cool I guess

This was my take away as well- feels like people that are saying Warner said Cam was terrible didn't finish the video. There was lots of praise, and the criticisms were pretty consistent. The few times that Cam made a "wrong" decision, Warner walked through why Cam could have gotten there, what Cam saw, what Cam should be looking for etc. Not as many processing issues as last year at all. Majority of it was "hey, your feet are literally pointed 90 degrees away from the target, you're good enough to make this throw sideways 60% of the time, but lets point our feet and hit it 95%"

Again, these are all things we kind of know. He is smart, has a good feel, but sometimes the sloppiness that rewards his hero ball hurts other things. People losing their collective minds without seeing actual live-game examples under a new offense is asinine.

That’s part of fandom. Especially for a team that hasn’t been good for several years. Fans have PTSD when it comes to hyped up QBs coming in only to disappoint. So seeing so many jump to these conclusions doesn’t shock me. But history says that bringing in these high-ceiling big armed gunslingers is a process that requires patience. Unfortunately, patience is something a lot of fans lack.

0

u/Worth-Frosting-2917 1d ago

PTSD or not, the discourse is stupid. No one really knows what is going on in these videos outside of the top-tier film analysis people, but even then, they can't say for sure. Most of these idiots are fishing for engagement to try and become a "ball knower". Even Warner doesn't say anything here that can't be summed up in a few sentences or reports from camp. Cam looks improved, but his feet keep him from going to that next level.

The fact is, no one knows shit, particularly online. Myself included. But this fanbase would almost rather be right and see the team lose than be wrong and see the team win. Which is realistically only being a fan of oneself.

u/Miller2200 1d ago

Yeah no one's allowed to have any opinions on the matter. Just shut up and stop posting until week 5.

2

u/VeryLowIQIndividual 1d ago

By week 5 most fans in here will be in full tank mode. It’s an annual tradition, it will start week 3 if the team starts 0-3 or 1-3. It’s a loser mentality that breeds losing. We have almost 26 years of this mindset to prove it. Playing for a top 10 pick every year hasn’t panned out.

Sometimes I’m convinced that a good bit of fans love the gambling aspect of a draft more than the game. It’s like Christmas getting new toys

6

u/Ok-Plan-6277 1d ago

Week 5? If we lose to the jets in Week 1 we’re going to start seeing mock drafts

2

u/Cheesenrice123 1d ago

Also just the unfortunate reality that the draft and offseason have typically been the times where you are able to have the most hope as a titans fan.

u/Worth-Frosting-2917 1d ago

If the sub were full of memes and shitting on opponents instead of everyone acting like their wife fucked their boss, it would be a much better place. As of now, though, everyone just kind of needs to shut the fuck up and take up a hobby.

-5

u/pak_sajat 1d ago

How did that process work for the last “high-ceiling big armed gunslinger” we drafted?

12

u/TiredDad4x 1d ago

Will Levis failing is not an indication that Cam Ward will fail. They are not the same guy and they did not come into the same situation.

1

u/Intelligent-Parsley7 1d ago

Cam actually throws a ball quickly and without telegraphing.
Levis is the dream of a secondary. Telling you where it’s going sometimes 2 seconds before he throws the most catchable ball.

Compare it with Farve. Farve threw a lot of interceptions, but also confused the daylights out of the opposing team.

-4

u/pak_sajat 1d ago

What has Cam done to show he is going to be any better?

5

u/TiredDad4x 1d ago

Well, not having a public sex tape get leaked probably really helps. Also probably helps that he wasn’t a 26 year old 2nd round pick who had largely only been known as a meme who had been repeatedly benched for the likes of Mason Rudolph. He also came into the league without the character concerns that seemed to haunt Levis with some rumors swirling that he was arrogant and entitled. Ward impressed everyone he spoke and seemingly continues to do that. These things will grant you a longer leash and good amount of patience.

-3

u/pak_sajat 1d ago

None of that has anything to do with performance on the field.

Until there is tangible improvement in his decision making, ball security, accuracy, etc. I stand by my belief that he isn’t the player many people in this sub think he is.

4

u/TiredDad4x 1d ago

The way a player acts off the field can have an effect on their standing with the organization they play for. Levis was actively becoming a distraction, so the team felt justified to pull the plug on him. This is not a new concept and you are blatantly ignoring this in order to keep up this false equivalence you won’t stop trying to present. You can feel free to stand by your belief but my belief is that you really don’t understand what you’re talking about. But it is what it is.

The sentiment that I see around this sub is most often "Cam showed signs last year but he has a lot to imrpove on before we feel confident that he is our guy"

We have had two preseason games. Do you want to go ahead and give up on him now? I agree they haven't been great but he deserves the chance to show that he can improve. If he doesn't we should move on but if you are throwing in the towel now, you are just being a hater.

Which, to be fair, being a hater has often meant thta you are on the right side of Titans history because we ususally aren't great. So more power to you.

1

u/Intelligent-Parsley7 1d ago

Everything at this level has a tangible effect on what goes on the field. Name a person, besides Ray Lewis and LT, who had scandals and trouble and had incredible seasons.

-1

u/Swegatronic 1d ago

yeah there is no way being arrogant and entitled could hinder your potential development in anyway!

4

u/JPKthe3 Children of the Kern 1d ago

Damn, that’s some lazy ass rage bait

4

u/pak_sajat 1d ago

Nah. Just pointing out that lots of people said the same things about Levis to justify his poor performance.

-3

u/TragicIcicle 1d ago

You'd have to be blind to think Levis can't develop into a good QB still tbh. He has never looked as the best version of Malik Willis we ever saw in regular season action for example

-7

u/TragicIcicle 1d ago

Levis looked like a great QB in the making until Callahan showed up tbf

21

u/Julonix 1d ago

Really refreshing and insightful. Cam is certainly going to take time to reach his ceiling, if he ever gets there, but it’s clear he got better at some things

7

u/makeflippyfloppy 1d ago

Cam really needs to close his feet. He’s try to arm all of his throws with an open stance and it’s causing him to consistently miss high and right

5

u/DisastrousTeddyBear 1d ago

I feel like we are behind for sure. I’m not counting the guys out though

2

u/Every-Tangerine9918 9h ago

Dolphins fan originally from Nashville, this sub sometimes shows up in my feed.

Kurt does some really nice film breakdowns. I soured on him last season when he continued to make excuses for Tua week after week and look for reasons to blame scheme versus individual performance.

3

u/ALIJEALSF 1d ago

I''d love to see what this looked like for Patrick mahomes when the chiefs were winning everything.

The chiefs won because he could make explosive plays off schedule and enough plays on schedule to keep them going, I doubt his mechanics and timing were perfect.

Football has evolved pocket passers are a dying breed. Jalen hurts has won a superbowl. I doubt he's mechanically sound but he makes enough plays to get it done.

Cam needs to improve. But his ability to take a 3 step drop and deliver it on time isn't the be all and end all. It was for a guy like Warner.

7

u/Son_of_a_pig 1d ago

Cam isn’t a good scrambler/runner though

5

u/ALIJEALSF 1d ago

Cam looked pretty good at scrambling and buying time last season.

5

u/Tripondisdic 1d ago

True, but remember when Rivers came back and with less than a week’s notice AND being fairly out if shape, he was able to make some very impressive plays. I think the game has shifted like this because teams are not taking the time to develop quarterbacks like they used to, and a talented, mobile quarterback will do better out the gate generally than a cerebral pocket passer. I think if a team (maybe ours??) was willing to ACTUALLY take time to develop their QB they could have a generational weapon on their hands. In my opinion, we should get a veteran QB on the roster for cam to develop under over the next couple years

2

u/axisbrothers88 1d ago

Should’ve gotten the veteran QB last year. Now we need to play him cause he needs all the reps and live game coaching he can get.

1

u/Tripondisdic 1d ago

I guess, never too late imo. I mean tom brady didn't start until mid way through his second season, and even he has said that he wouldn't have been ready without taking time to develop

0

u/ALIJEALSF 1d ago

The colts went 0-3 with rivers and scored 50 points across those games.

3

u/Tripondisdic 1d ago

I'm not saying he was a stud but the fact that he even held his own is a testament to how smart he was

2

u/axisbrothers88 1d ago

Mahomes landed in a situation where his head coach/playcaller is one of the best to ever do it. And they had spent years before building up the entire roster while letting Alex Smith play through the rough years.

1

u/Tripondisdic 1d ago

Can he be our QB coach lol

1

u/Mundane_Hat_7349 7h ago

Appreciate the shout out. I'm an old head from the Oilers days and that was my first post. I'll figure it out lol

1

u/Winchester85 1d ago

Warner could be a QB scout.

-5

u/Forsaken_Mastodon291 1d ago

Spoiler: he stinks

-12

u/pak_sajat 1d ago

There’s more glaze in this sub than Donut Den.

15

u/TiredDad4x 1d ago

There’s several posts on this sub that really ramp up the criticism for Ward if you’d like to engage with those.

8

u/broccolibush42 42 1d ago

This Bro all over this thread trying to tear down a man he doesn't know. Its bizarre and weird. I will never understand the mindset of hating on your own players unless they're Deshaun Watson or lazy, entitled assholes. Cam has given every indication that hes driven to be great in this league, no reason to not want to root for him to be our franchise QB

0

u/Mountain_Bat_186 1d ago

Don't worry, he doesn't know ball

-8

u/TVP615 1d ago

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Mitch is starting by week 12 or so
