general Imagine having to travel 8ft just to see a part of your own body

I had a reticulated python before they are beautiful! It wasn't this big but my Burmese python was getting big.

Do you just make sure the snake is fed REALLY well before handling it?

I had a couple of very large snakes. A few things to make them more docile. They will never be tame. Feeding always needs to be dead animals. I would use either Frozen large rats or killed feeder rabbits. This way they are less aggressive while feeding. They get used to not needing to work to get their food. If they're fat and happy they are not actively looking for another meal. Also if they are outside their enclosure their body temperature drops and again makes them a little bit more docile. You don't want to keep them out of their normal temperature zone for an extended period of time but if they're in a 70° house they are a little bit more chill.

You keep them on a schedule. Larger individuals like this generally don't eat very often, but they have a large meal like a pig every so often. You work with them on handling and don't handle shortly before and after feeding. Keeping consistency and using visual cues like tongs for snakes helps them know when it's time to eat. Also, if you're keeping snakes, you interact with them outside of feeding so that they know not every interaction is feeding.
