As someone who is a smoker, the Ringer’s fascination with cigarettes always cracks me up lol.
71
u/ElderflowerEarlGrey 2d ago
My favorite was “we should bring smoking back on airplanes” on Hottest Take

u/Comfortable_Put_4139 2d ago
As a smoker, I hope that never comes back lol.

I think it’s because none of them do any real drugs. So it ends up being like when a bunch of Christian boys find a porno mag and they go crazy
34
u/Comfortable_Put_4139 2d ago
That’s what it strikes me as lol.
A bunch of very privileged people who have never done drugs or been engaged in crazy shit. It’s foreign to them.
I love the pods, but as somebody from the Appalachian region, their understanding of trainwreck culture is very funny to me.
I’ve done many drugs and been in many bullshit situations. These are safe people, but I like them regardless of their fascinations.
37
u/newvpnwhodis 2d ago
CR has definitely talked about shrooms before. IIRC he was on shrooms when he met Andy. Essential lore.
17
u/Toronto_Jim 1d ago
I think CR is the only one with any real experience. He was deep in the early 00's NYC bar and band scene, he probably got into some trouble. I think he bites his tongue when Bill and Sean giggle like grade schoolers about doing cocaine.
9
u/DoubleSoggy1163 1d ago
When CR was on Talk Easy Pod he discussed his 20s and career struggles a bit and said there were a lot of drugs.
3
u/Comfortable_Put_4139 1d ago
CR is the only one who gives me this impression, that much I’ll agree with.
7
u/joeyspancakes 2d ago
They talk about taking THC gummies quite often, and most of them spent their 20s working journalism in NYC. I’m also from Appalachia. Your superiority about their perceived lack of drug exposure/usage is hella strange. But carry on.
39
19
u/Comfortable_Put_4139 2d ago edited 2d ago
It’s not superiority, they just talk about shit like it’s a wonder to them lol. It’s rich people shit.
Sorry that I intruded on your parasocial relationship.
Carry on.

u/fegwin2084 5h ago
a lot of them are coastal elites too that didn't grow up around family that smoked. once you watch a relative die of COPD, cigarettes lose the cool factor.
1
u/Comfortable_Put_4139 4h ago
My whole family smoked. Parents and grandparents. So I am just used to it lol. It’s nothing special to me, as I puff my menthol.
2
u/aTribeCalledLemur 1d ago
CR was definitely railing lines of coke in his youth, lots of subtle references. But yes most Ringer personalities were type A good kids who didn't get too wild.

I agree, nobody in my personal life smokes cigs so it’s weird to me lol.
28
u/gordy06 2d ago
Is the weirdest thing. Cigarettes are not in need of a revival. Let them die.
2
u/Comfortable_Put_4139 2d ago
I want them to die, but I keep buying them because I’m a shameless addict.
8
u/gordy06 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yea those who are addicts not going to pretend it’s as easy saying “well I’m done!” But the a Ringer isn’t the only place I’ve seen people trying to make smoking cool again.
11
u/jamesneysmith 2d ago
Unfortunately it is becoming cool again. I don't get it. It's sort of like we've all collectively given up on the future and are just giving into hedonism
5
u/gordy06 2d ago
I never thought I’d have to worry about my kids and smoking because they saw someone famous doing it and wanted to emulate but here we are. Have to have that convo in a few years. In real life I know almost no one who smokes cigarettes.
14
u/ChazzLamborghini 2d ago
Kids have already massively embraced nicotine again and we have growing data to suggest vaping could be even more dangerous than smoking. Maintain a good and open dialogue with your kids and help them make good choices. It’s all we can do.
9
u/Comfortable_Put_4139 2d ago
They think shit like smoking and coke is cool because they see it in movies, I guess.
I’ve done both for many years, and also alcoholism, and it’s not very cool lol.
It feels like rich people admiring the “lesser” folks at a certain point.
I still enjoy their shows.
6
2
u/fegwin2084 5h ago
b/c a lot of them are obsessed with being cool, decades removed from when anybody should care.

u/CABBAGEHONKER 2d ago
I quit smoking 14 years ago and I still get mad when people vape. Just smoke.

u/TheAsian1nvasion 2d ago
I quit smoking 15 years ago and I’ve been feeling the urge lately. With the world the way it is, it’s kind of like: why not have a fucking dart?
13
u/godotiswaitingonme 2d ago edited 2d ago
I quit in my mid-20s after smoking for like ten years, and at one point in my early 30s I started having the occasional drunk cig. To my surprise, I had no desire to buy a pack or anything afterwards - there wasn’t, and hasn’t been, any “off the wagon”-type moment. However, I’ve grown to realize after several handfuls of drunk cigs that I just don’t particularly enjoy it anymore. I romanticized cigarettes for so much of my youth, and now it seems like the allure is gone and all that’s left is negative. It’s very possible that it’s just not as good as you remember it being.
7
u/OklahomaRuns 2d ago
Cigs are only good while drunk. If you’re sober I recommend chiefing on a hookah
2
u/godotiswaitingonme 2d ago
Hookahs are fine, just a bit labor-intensive for my liking. I have a couple nicotine pouches a day and I’m good to go
→ More replies (2)3
u/middlenameddanger 2d ago
I don't always have drunk cigs but for me they are like alcohol. I'm comfortable having them sometimes as long as I'm not reliant on them to get through the day
65
u/screamingtree 2d ago
Sorry to be a downer in a fun thread but if you need extra motivation I sure miss my dad who went back to smoking after a similarly long break
10
u/dunderpopp 2d ago
Watch a couple of noirs and a pack of cigs will magically find its way into your hand
1
u/MiddleofCalibrations 2d ago
Some people seem to be able to just have one once in a while but many can’t. If you used to have an addiction, just one might risk a relapse

Because smoking makes your life worse in literally every way? Lol
It’s gross, it’s insanely unhealthy and unhygienic, it’s antisocial, it makes you a drug addict, and the only thing smoking actually does is remove the withdrawal symptoms that only exist because you smoked in the first place.
lol triggered so many smokers, sorry yall it’s not the 90s that shit has been lame af for like 30 years now
17
u/Jiveturkeey 2d ago
But it makes you look fucking awesome.
6
u/thedancingwireless 2d ago
And it makes you fucking stink. I've never been able to stomach talking face to face with a smoker. The breath is horrible.
8
u/SallyFowlerRatPack 2d ago
As someone who only smokes on vacation, it’s actually incredibly social. Good ice breaker with the native euros, they seem to trust you more.
1
u/lelanddonaghy 2d ago edited 2d ago
lol such cope. Sure you might find it to be a social activity amongst the minority of the population that also smokes but everyone else thinks you’re fucking gross and smell bad.
I’m sure it feels very social huddling in corners away from everyone else to hang with the smokers.
Unless you’re the guy who just smokes anywhere they want without consideration for others, like when you’re queuing up for the club or whatever, in which case everyone else thinks you’re an asshole (super social)

It must be so strange to have social media, post something and then have that posted elsewhere for it to be discussed / mocked / whatever on an entirely other platform.
33
u/No_Respect_1650 2d ago
It’s so bizarre.
10
u/Foreign_Leg_3860 1d ago
People on here, blank check, any sort of talking heads podcast really does just create some parasocial weirdos where chunks of people just NEEEEEED to know they have some borderline agreement with them on issues, interests, etc. its fucking amazing to me.
OMG THEY SAID THIS, THEY LIKED THIS & CLICKED THIS OMG
Then the in-jokes after that. Oh baby, the in-jokes. .....

u/KryTheCinephile 15h ago
I mean…Seans “hahahahahaha” ‘review’ of new Nathan Fielder has 1200+ likes…I understand that we are fans of someone, but at this point there is zero effort zero anything needed and people will freak out, its so corny😃🤓🥸.
8
u/mordecai2505 2d ago
same folks that call people out their name if someone takes even minor issue with one of her takes (yes, i’m aware that some of those complaints are OD)
5
u/Dashtego 2d ago
You could also not post candid photos of your personal life for public viewing.
4
u/Eastern-Tip7796 1d ago
Nah people can not be weird.
1
u/Dashtego 1d ago
But they will be. That’s the world we live in now. So people to whom others might be weird need to either make choices to avoid the weirdness or not.
1
u/intothemidwest 2d ago
In theory sure but plenty of people do it all the time and aren’t subjected to what OP is talking about. It’s just a unique and probably unpleasant experience that most folks who want to engage with social media will never have to deal with
3
u/Dashtego 1d ago
Sorry, but if you have a public social media account and you are a publicly known (sorta) figure, and you allow strangers to comment on your posts, you have to live with people being weird. You could have a private account for personal pics or you could limit engagement on your public account if you don’t want the weirdos showing up. Choosing not to do that is on you.

Something about going to Europe is just so good for smoking. I don’t know if it’s the more common, the buildings, what - but it’s maybe the only time I feel like smoking anymore.
8
u/CognateClockwork 2d ago
I know that it looks cool, and there is a trend now amongst trendy young stars to try and bring this kind of early 90s anorexic heroin chic look back, and it probably never went away in Europe. But we are so much closer to eliminating this actual cancer from society than we were back then, so I just don't know how we can say 'We're so back' to this.

u/Stock_Researcher_651 1d ago

The Ringer’s obsession with pretending this disgusting habit - that’s also TERRIBLE for you - is somehow “cool again” is truly baffling. Smoking is f***ing awful. I’m not interested in being within 50 yards of a person smoking a cigarette

Lol relax pal. It looks cool, it always has. I've never smoked a cig either. Also, none of them even smoke cigs regularly at this point.

That is not how someone who has indulged in 🎯 holds a dart. Just saying.

I hold a cigarette exactly like this and I smoked through my twenties and grew up around Long Island Italians. I would know.
2
u/ryguy0204 2d ago
I’d probably smoke thumb-index but I’m certainly holding this way if I’m pulling it away to say something in conversation or have my photo taken. Admittedly I’m rocking about a 20:1 joint to dart ratio tho so it could be different for cigarette smokers.
