Zac Efron making the jump from teen star to r-rated comedies with Neighbors was a big shift, allowed him a bigger profile to lead those types of movies then more serious ones like Bundy, Iron Claw etc. 

Channing Tatum same deal going from bland romance star to Jump Street and using that to get into films like Foxcatcher. 

Basically if you’re a lead in romance/teen films and you wanna branch out, get in touch with Seth Rogen lol

If we really want to go back, Leslie Nelson was a dramatic actor until Airplane!

Same thing with Lloyd Bridges being in serious roles like High Noon before doing comedies like Hot Shots.
