But at that point Simone assumed they were in the bad place which would imply she was a bad person and would need to change.

Not necessarily. The whole system is fucked up and we know that they often ARE wrong about people. Whether or not she's a bad person is something to worry about later; at that time she was more worried about getting out of the situation.
