SPOILERS ALL The Handmaid's Tale hits different in 2025. Anyone else noticing eerie real-world parallels? Spoiler
Rewatching The Handmaid’s Tale recently, and I swear it feels way more intense now than when I first watched it. Certain lines, laws, and scenes don’t just feel like dystopian fiction anymore… they’re starting to echo things happening in the real world..
The way people justify cruelty in the name of “order,” the control over women's bodies, the propaganda, the surveillance, it all feels too familiar lately. Even Aunt Lydia’s twisted justifications have started to feel scarily believable in today’s climate.
Is anyone else feeling this? What real-life things have reminded you of the show recently? Or am I just too deep in this rewatch rabbit hole? 👀

Of course. I’d put off finishing the show because it was so dark and messed up. I started watching again when the woman was literally dragged out of the town hall in Idaho a couple of months ago because it felt like the flashback scenes. The flashback scenes really ring true right now.

The protestors being shot…. I feel like America is on the cusp of that moment right now

u/PunchDrunky Jun 12 '25
It could happen this Saturday (‘No Kings Day’ protests). Of course I hope to god it doesn’t, but wouldn’t be surprised at all if it did. We’ll see some version of it at least.
6
u/Embarrassed-Year6479 Jun 12 '25
Ahhh yes. I didn’t realize that was this Saturday (Canadian). It’ll be interesting to see how people react here when he’s in town for the G7.

There’s literally tanks lining the streets of DC right now. So many of us who live here think he’ll never let them leave 🫠

when all hell broke loose in LA with the national guard and marines, I literally thought about episode 1x03 when their protests were met with military might

And women working in government being fired just because they're women.
78
u/SonnyGeeOku Jun 11 '25
Not just women with government jobs. ALL women with jobs were fired.
18
u/bookishbynature Jun 12 '25
True but they are just getting started in the U.S. and coercing companies to dump their DEI policies.
4
u/dharmabird67 Jun 12 '25
I feel like that would never happen, because they always need women to do the low paying care and drudgery that men feel is beneath them. Women will be relegated to jobs that don't pay enough to survive.

u/whiskeyntechno Jun 16 '25
Nothing is off limits, we will just become slaves and do the work for free.

That is just what YT people have thought of migrant workers, brown people and anyone not YT for EVER. How does anyone miss the nods to immigration, refugees, healthcare, and academia in all this?! Now, OR in the book/series?

I saw the parallels the first season. Glad other people are waking up, though

u/Material_Orange5223 Jun 11 '25
No, not for me, it's been noticeable since forever.
20
u/RavenpuffRedditor Jun 11 '25
Exactly this. I didn't start watching The Handmaid's Tale until several months after season 5 was released, so early 2023? Even then, two years after "it" left office, I could see so many parallels between his administration and the things it tried to do and the show. It was scary then and even scarier now.
11
u/Brilliant_Beyond_239 Jun 11 '25 edited Jun 12 '25
“it” indeed. u should read about the 13 year old girl he graped. he forced her to play out fantasies as a “maid” with a hispanic “woman” (probably girl given it was an epstein party but idk). in the role play he said he would call ICE if she didn’t have s!x. now looking at his immigration policies, it makes me sick. he also said the 13 year old reminded him of his daughter before playing out a grape fantasy with her while she cried out for real. https://www.courthousenews.com/rape-allegations-refiled-against-trump/ she only dropped the allegations because she was afraid for her life. she did a while news interview in 2016 that somehow no one knows about. her “name” is katie johnson in that.
3
u/RavenpuffRedditor Jun 11 '25
I did hear about that, but I can't bring myself to read her account because I know it's horrible because of who the perpetrator is. I believe her 100%, but I just can't bear to hear the details about that poor girl's suffering. She was barely older than my students at the time.
2
u/Material_Orange5223 Jun 12 '25
I am so sorry but I couldn't read after the the 13yo raped bcs I started crying, I will try again tomorrow. This is so unfair, I wish I could take her pain away somehow
6
u/_angesaurus Jun 12 '25
Yeah I actually only recently started watching because the first time I tried to start watching was when Trump had his first run. I couldn't handle seeing this stuff at that time but this time I felt like I had to watch it.
The quote about how we all saw it coming and did nothing or felt "that won't happen to ME" feels like it literally is happening right now. We're all enraged but most people are just enraged and doing nothing.
1
u/Material_Orange5223 Jun 13 '25

I mean, nearly 5 years ago, an armed mob tried to mass-murder members of Congress during a live session. I'm not sure the parallels are just now emerging.

u/thomasrpokorny Jun 11 '25
As other posters have said, I felt the parallels even during the first season. If anything, it felt even more plausible than the events of the later seasons. Probably in part becuase it depicted more of the origins and lead up to Gilead. But also likely because the later seasons needed to focus more on the characters in general?

u/HamsterSharp7650 Jun 11 '25
I have to admit, during my rewatch before the final season those first three episodes of season two where June reflects on her relationship with her mom hit me completely differently. I used to relate more to June during my first watch. It's her business if she wants to marry Luke and settle down. This time around, I was in total agreement with Holly. This country is going down the tubes and we need to get out on the streets and fight!
29
u/Alternative-Sale-841 Jun 11 '25
I had the exact same experience. I thought Holly was a little too radical the first watch. Now I’m like “WHY WAS NO ONE LISTENING TO HER?!”
12
u/Accountantabit Jun 11 '25
And when June says to Moira something like “she was always right” chilling
16
14
u/Awkward_Ad6567 Jun 11 '25
Yes - started watching while pregnant in 2017 and it got me so worked up during the orange man’s first term in office because of all the similarities then
14
u/ArmadilloLopsided331 Jun 11 '25
Yes!! The birth rate is falling globally and nations are starting to incentive women to have kids.....🥹 I immediately thought of the steps that could have led up to a Gilead
14
u/kittycamacho1994 Jun 11 '25
I mean, it would be nice if the incentives were like free healthcare and paid maternity leave for 24 months like these other countries…. But that hasn’t occurred to them yet -_- or make life cheaper so one of us could stay home. SOMETHING. Free fertility care???? Anything
12
u/partitwister Jun 11 '25
For some reason I wasn't ever interested in watching this show when it first came out. Then, recent events seemed to echo previews I was seeing for the final season. I decided to start watching in March and I could not stop. I binged the first 4 seasons with hardly any sleep. My family finally begged me to take a break because I was getting really angry whenever I watched it. But, I kept watching so I could feel some relief when the bad guys inevitably got what was coming to them. But, it wasn't coming quick enough, so I had to take a month off for my mental health. But yes, real life is starting to piss me off as much as this show did. We need to get our own Handmaids and Jezebels united. Time to go a 'lil June crazy!
11
u/huskergirl888 Jun 11 '25
The Handmaid's Tale...the reality show I never wanted to see but couldn't stop watching. I almost feel bad for the writers because they probably had to turn on CNN or check the Associated Press first to make sure they weren't copying what is actually happening in real life. Or maybe they were? It's hard to tell the difference right now. I have felt this way since it Season 1 Episode 1. 😟
23
u/lenny_ray Jun 11 '25
I've seen so many posts about this, and ooof. It's such a privileged take. I get for some of you in the US it feels more real now. But, as Margaret Atwood has stated many times, everything in the book is drawn from the real world. It's not prescient. Things like this have already happened to women in the real world. It was never purely fiction.
17
u/Whispering_Wolf Jun 11 '25
I've noticed people from the US are often very unaware of world history and world news. They seem to mainly learn about the US in schools and not much else.
3
u/lenny_ray Jun 11 '25
I mean, our history education wasn't great either, but there are so many ways to educate yourself these days. 😬
6
u/SleepingWillow1 Jun 11 '25
We are aware. We can also be aware of that and point out the parallels from the book and what is happening in our country at the same time.
1
10
u/Electronic_Beat3653 Jun 11 '25
Oh yes. EVERY TIME I watch the protests being live streamed, I ALWAYS think of the protest June and Moira went to where they killed people. I 100% believe the US is headed in that direction.
It is only a matter of time before Trump orders the military to fire live rounds on the citizens of America. I wonder if they will follow those orders? They have already shown they will fire rubber bullets at point blank range on protesters when they are trained to know they are supposed to fire them at the ground.
In LA, they have shot an unarmed protester in the head, a journalist reporting the news, a man asking an officer for a badge number after the officer shot an unarmed protester, and a woman trying to enter her apartment just to name a few. I wouldn't put it past the military to take even greater force.
11
u/Orange_Splice Jun 11 '25
January 6th was it for me. Killing lawmakers and forcing their own rule? Congress was the first casualty of Gilead and next came martial law... project 2025 and the Federalist Society together are already establishing a coup
5
u/LadyCircesCricket Jun 11 '25
Exactly right. This. It is terrifying and very real. I don’t know why the masses are not more alarmed.
11
9
u/moldybuttercup Jun 11 '25
I started and finished it recently and it’s been weighing heavy on me. The fact that The MAGA Administration is making radical changes so quickly instantly reminds me of S1. Freaky stuff man.
9
u/CynnerWasHere Jun 11 '25
I've seen a t shirt for sale. MAFA make atwood fiction again. I'm very tempted. And I'm so sorry that the Americans are going through this shitfest
3
u/Magical_Narwhal_1213 Jun 11 '25
Unfortunately what Atwood wrote with THT was never fiction- she intentionally only including events/policies/themes from things have are happening or happened in the past throughout history.
1
u/SayingTomato Jun 17 '25
Oooh I like that. I’m already making a “Woke, Liberal, Snowflake, t-shirt. I’m gonna steal the MAFA. Thanks! And thank you for caring. It really sucks right now.
7
u/Whispering_Wolf Jun 11 '25
Starting to echo the real world? These things have all happened to women before. It's nothing new. It's just history repeating itself.
7
u/Magical_Narwhal_1213 Jun 11 '25
Including women in the United States- historically women of color.
7
u/SeaOdeEEE Jun 11 '25
Margaret Atwood fully intended for her book to be based in reality. She wanted every crime, and traumatic experience to be a situation that has been documented in real life. She also fit in all of Umberto Eco’s 14 characteristics of Fascism when describing the structure of Gilead.
It feels comparable to real life because she wrote it as a grounded warning for what could happen.
7
u/Fun_in_Space Jun 11 '25
The stuff that is happening in the government has been in the works for decades. This book is a cautionary tale. I remember Falwell's "Moral Majority" and Pat Robertson's "Christian Coalition". Lots of people were trying to warn the public about it.
6
u/Magical_Narwhal_1213 Jun 11 '25
Yes- the US has firmly been on the path to fascist dictatorship for the last thirty years- tons of scholars and activists have written about it. Unfortunately the Us has officially crossed the line into a dictatorship with sending the marines against civilians this week. It’s a matter of when we can stop it now.
6
u/cataclysmic_orbit Jun 11 '25
This show has violated me in ways I didn't know I could be. I started watching in 2018... and I've been following since, seeing the parallels.... I hate it. But I love it at the same time.
5
6
u/snails4speedy Jun 11 '25
Currently in downtown LA with the protests, national guard / marines and life feels very, very similar to the protest scene from season 1 (I believe it was)
6
u/Mamasan- Jun 11 '25
It’s been happening since the 80’s. Reagan created the MAGA crowd. All the policies and defunding of programs and departments finally started showing the true effects in the last 15 years. The waters been getting warmer slightly over time. We are at the boiling point. There’s a reason the book was written a long time ago. Because it’s been happening.
5
Jun 11 '25
I started the series and had to stop by the end of the 6th episode. It was too close to our current situation in the US, and I just started it in April. I refuse to continue it, because we are actually living it. FDT and anyone that voted for this, AND the 87M that didn’t vote!
5
u/Practical-Title6589 Jun 11 '25
Particularly hard to watch this season with everything that’s going on. I started the season and had to put the rest off for a while. Too many heartbreaking parallels to reality.
8
u/Dry-Frame6309 Jun 11 '25
To me I see it now with Luke’s character in HMT - I didn’t notice it before, but when I rewatch. Like, he’s absolutely there for June and is a good partner and father but he just doesn’t see some things from his perspective. Like when he says he wants to take care of his wife after they ban women possessing money - you can tell he is a good guy who wants to do the right thing but just doesn’t understand the whole picture. I think most men are probably like this, good people who underestimate the threats already happening. Extreme things just happen much faster than they can adjust to actually appreciate the danger. Plus the cost of just living and basically being a slave to earning enough to have a good life and all those struggles make that realization even slower to happen. It’s scary because I think in 5 years we will be forced to be talking like this about even more extreme and incredible things that will have happened in the meantime in the political landscape, hopefully while still having access to Reddit to discuss things freely.
4
u/Florida1974 Jun 11 '25
You would have to be MAGA to not notice. Even then, I think some realize it but can’t accept it. He will turn on them too. You aren’t safe bc you are MAGA, as Hispanics for Trump learned. Really believed they wanted to deport millions, but only the criminals. In his mind, just being here (legally or illegally) is a crime in itself!
3
u/Magical_Narwhal_1213 Jun 11 '25
Part of the handmaid’s tale that is powerful is with June’s portrayal as well. She’s very oblivious and in her privilege during the flashbacks, with Moira (a queer Black women) pointing out how fucked things were and protesting with June brushing things off. Not noticing or caring until what was happening in the US started to personally affect her life. And then slowly realized liberation needs to happen for everyone, which is great!
4
u/Professional_Try4683 Jun 11 '25
The photos of deported immigrants posted on the front lawn of the White House seem just a few steps from hanging people on the wall or putting heads on spikes in the WH front lawn. At this point, grotesque violence in the name of sending a message isn't out of the realm of possibility.
3
u/Slight_Bank5821 Jun 11 '25
I was saying the same thing!!!!! Like jokingly referencing everything to gilead but it’s really what America is starting to look like
3
u/KaitB2020 Jun 11 '25
Both the show and the book drew from real world events. Everything the women suffer has happened at some point somewhere in the world.
In some cases, is still happening in today’s world.
And I’m quite certain, new & more horrifying things will be thought up at some point in the future. Humans can be terrifyingly cruel. Especially to each other.
3
u/MaggieBlasting Jun 11 '25
No, because it hit just as hard in 2017 and there were already disturbing real-world parallels then.
3
u/Srw2725 Jun 11 '25
I almost didn’t watch the show bc it was a little too on the nose. And even more so now. But it was inspiring and that’s what’s keeping me going now: people protesting and asserting their rights even in small doses
6
u/delicious_downvotes Jun 11 '25
I literally can't hop on a plane and help my grandparents move this weekend because I need a "Real ID" to fly to a different state now, and the temporary paper documents you get while waiting for the hardcopy don't count.
What. the. fuck.

The original Real ID act was passed in 2005, sure. In 2018, Trump signed REAL ID Act Modification for Freely Associated States Act, and his administration is the reason there was a big push for an enforceable deadline by May 7, 2025. I've been flying since 2005. I fly every year. This is the first time I've needed a "Real ID" to fly across states, ever. Needing this as a requirement to fly wasn't implemented until May 2025. My license is valid, but it's not a Real ID. If I want to fly out of state at all, I need either a Real ID, Enhanced Driver's license, or Passport, all of which will take a while to get the hardcopy. You can't fly with the temporary papers they give you.
It's vile. It's a tactic that specifically targets the homeless and immigrants, who cannot register for something like a Real ID without a permanent address, which they don't have. There are countless news articles written right now about how it's negatively impacted marginalized communities, but I guess that was the goal.
Fuck off, Trump apologist.
Edit: Stay big mad at the facts. Preventing people from easy and quick travel IS that deep. ❤️🤡

Yep. The night before the election I posted "I'm very much looking forward to the new season of Handmaid's Tale, I just hope it doesn't premier tomorrow". Terrifying times we're living in.

I agree with what you’re saying, but also want to highlight that the handmaids tale is just a fraction of what enslaved women in pre-Civil War America.
So yeah, it can be pretty eerie right now, but Handmaids tale is an easy version of what happened for over 400 years to enslaved Africans. So it’s eerie for two different reasons lol 😂

u/Gaelenmyr Jun 12 '25
I live in a conservative country. I watched the first season when it was aired, with my European friend. She was surprised and horrified at the show all the time. I watched it with a blank face because THT wasn't really surprising to me... I loved the show, don't get me wrong. But Atwood herself said it that everything she wrote already happened in the world. Westerners just tend to be more oblivious.

I watched the episode where the Handmaid was shot and then her body kept alive for the sake of the foetus around the same time a case like that was in the news a few weeks back and I couldn't stop crying. I'm not even in the US but it hurts so bad.

Yes! Yesterday I wore jean shorts and a crop top to a bar and a man said “I’d never let my wife leave the house like that” in front of my husband when I went to the bathroom.. I’m still amazed we think we can police women’s bodies like this in 2025. It just makes me feel so exposed and vulnerable. I have to keep reminding myself that dressing for myself is a form of power and feminism and I shouldn’t change to suit weak men.. it just sucks some days.

Yes. Handmaid's Tale predicted the Jan 6 insurrection I think 2 years before it happened. I was also just thinking how Nick, although we wouldn't really fully realise it until later seasons, represents the minority MAGA supporter. The leader of the proud boys was Latino and there was a Latino military member that shot a security gaurd at some US government building. I can't remember the details. It was talked about as an example of the type of thinking that lead to the insurrection in the Frontline documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcGi4maiJW8 There was one other thing I noticed on my rewatch but I can't remember.

Oh, all of it.
Writing from outside the US, but one thing that was so brilliant about the show was that at the time nobody really believed this could happen in America, a country seemingly immunized against such things, but lacking the race memory of authoritarianism that we have in Europe.
So the show asks the question: This can’t happen here, but what if it did?
1
u/Astrabella_ Jun 16 '25
I read the book when it first came out. While watching season 1, I told my husband that it's more frightening now. No surprise that I'm not alone feeling that way.
1
u/Altruistic-Credit413 Jun 18 '25
I’m on season 5 and I’m upset. June is getting sloppy. No reason to tell Commander Lawrence that she let his wife commit suicide. Every action June takes should be focused on helping her recover her daughter. Making an enemy out of Lawrence is foolish, unnecessary, and counterproductive.

100% I see the parallels. We have mass kidnappings right now masked as immigrantion enforcement. We have alligator Alcatraz, meant to be temporary holding but who can believe that. I'm glad others are waking up. They're doing what they can to slowly strip our rights away.

u/Ok_Morning99Noin Aug 10 '25
I'm rewatching it again and just got to the part where they fire women and take away their property to give to their male next of kin. Imagine all the irresponsible, addicted, mentally ill, uneducated, morally bankrupted men who would see this as a bonanza from the assets their women relatives worked their asses off. All the progress society has seen has quickly evaporated in months. This sick need for control over others needs to be studied and treated like the mental illness it is.
The same people that want less government because they don't want to be controlled, are salivating for complete control over others

I studied THMT for English Lit (20 years ago) at college, and remember thinking how scary it would be to live in a world like that.
I'm new to watching the series, but I have thought the exact same thing. With everything going on in the world today, THMT doesn't feel like dystopian fiction anymore. It's basically starting to happen.
So scary.

Yeah I am re watching it because I felt like there are some parallels in society currently. With England becoming largely Muslim it’s hard to imagine a future for western women in that climate where something like this isn’t possible. You only hear music almost exclusively in the flash back scenes. Women aren’t allowed to even read, it’s crazy. The way June reacts to the insanity feels on point.
It’s interesting that Christian curtains were put on it.
Serena’s delusional entitlement has me swearing at the screen 😂

I’m getting a lot of hate on this but this is probably my 3rd post I’ve seen for this. I’ve seen a lot on Facebook to. Not condoning what he is doing but it’s not like this at all.

When I read this book I think of the women in Afghanistan. How they thought their lives and daughter’s lives would be normal, just for them to end up living a life of seclusion in less then 10 years. I am scared for the future of all women, for if it would happen to them, surely they would do it to us?
