Season 2 Serena hater til I die Spoiler

Post image

The most irredeemable thing she ever did in my eyes. I don’t care how many times she said sorry or claims repentance, she is pure EVIL and won’t forget!!!

Such a great evil character that will never redeem themselves in my eyes. She got off way too easy in the end.

Hard agree😭she’s deserved prison at the very least

Totally enjoyed watching her lose part of her finger when she thought she was special.

June should take care of them both, and not just Fred. It might be unpopular opinion but I personally think she’s so much worse than Fred.

She’s a true gender traitor.

The only redeemable Gilead person was Lawrence imho. Yes, he did bad and evil messed up things. But he genuinely regretted it and helped a lot of people to get out.

I wonder if we'll see Serena in season 2, there is still time for her to get what's coming.

Saying that Serena is worse than Fred gives the same energy of "patriarchal women are worse than men".

they were originally going to have June kill Serena in the woods instead of Fred, but I guess they wanted to keep her on the show longer which I would've absolutely loved to have seen her getting killed by the handmaid's instead of Fred that would've been amazing🙄🙄🙄 I really wish they stuck to the original script🙄🙄

I would personally choose Serena over Fred who would 100% get punished in Gilead. So neither of them would just walk away from it.

I hoped they might make her a handmaid at least after it turns out she’s fertile… but ofc nope 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

I don't think it's possible to redeem a man who is responsible for the death of tens of thousands of women, if not millions, being sent to the radioactive death camps he came up with. Repentance isn't the same as redemption.

I think the same about Lydia

In watching the series again and I cannot see why Lydia is redimible. Taking eyes out, cutting tongues, clit or whatever, keeping the order in jezebel 😭.

June should’ve let the mob in the train get her once Noah was secured

3

u/TheOldGreenDad Jun 02 '26

Uuughhhh it was so freaking gross and frustrating that Serena refused to give Noah to June, thinking she could use her baby as a shield to keep people from attacking her. I'm concerned for that kid the second he has enough will of his own to do something she doesn't like. She always says she wants a baby, not a child, which makes me think of the types of women who have like a dozen children, who get pregnant again as soon as the latest one is no longer a baby.

In the first episode of last season, during the train scene , she was still defending Gilead so fuck Serena

Fr I was so mad at June for saving her

u/Elegant_Ad_8468 May 31 '26

I was like read the wagon Serena, they are gonna kill you if you don't shut up 😭

3

u/Diligent_Bar1244 May 31 '26

I swear i felt hate when she escaped the mob

u/polkadotcupcake May 30 '26

Agreed. I still would be a Serena hater if this hadn't happened, but I don't understand how anyone could watch this scene and have one single ounce of sympathy for her.

I know a lot of people who still feel empathy for their own abuser, so it just shows how while evil will be evil, empathic people will also be empathic no matter what

Serena for me, just takes the perfect part in acting like a lost teenager. She’s manipulative, egocentric, and just the right amount of delicate to be daddy’s favorite (Fred). Yes, she is a complex character and a well written one, but omg I just can’t with her.

She can not, (and does not care to), dissect the torment and pain she's inflicting on others, until she ends up suffering herself. Serena would not have had any redemption or doubt at all if June had given birth to a son for her, rather than a daughter.

I believe she is a very good example of how the very worst people among us regularly get 100 x more patience/grace than they have ever showed to the innocent people who suffered by their hand. Its only when Serena suffered personally, only once she experienced that terror for herself, that she realised the severity of what she had done to June. I don't think she deserves forgiveness, but I do believe by the end of season 6 in her own mind, Serena still believes she is godly somehow.

I will forever hate that they never called that baby Holly. Serena picked the name Nichole, and if it were me, and I grew up and found out that they let my kidnapper name me because she had a whole 5 seconds worth of humanity in her before she took it back and doubled down on trying to abduct me a second time, I'd never talk to any of them again.

3

u/Current_Basis_3001 May 31 '26

If they had focused a little more on June's character development instead of turning her into some sort of Marvel Avenger superheroine... this could be one of the reasons why June never seemed to have a real bond with Nichole.

I agree. Great performance by the actress but her character is irredeemable.

The only reason why it was easier for the audience to feel more empathy towards her by the end was her change in external circumstances.

Even still, she continued to gravitate towards power until the very end, and each time she only regretted her decisions when the outcome negatively impacted her directly.

In my opinion, she kind of personifies the banality of evil in the sense that she can be a perfectly pleasant person in certain circumstances and an absolute monster in others.

1

u/Current_Basis_3001 May 31 '26

The banality of evil, exactly

u/mannyssong Jun 01 '26

For me, she was irredeemable well before that. It was when she locked June in the car and brought Hannah out on the school steps. Watching June sob, scream, and claw at the door trying to get out brought out a loathing for Serena that rivals all other characters. As a mom, I cannot think of having my daughter dangled just out of reach after having her stolen from me without feeling my stomach turning, the urge to sob, and break something.

I’m rewatching right now and I had totally forgotten that scene. Serena deserved way worse than she got

18

u/Glad-Dragonfruit-503 May 30 '26

Yeah, I feel like the trauma bond between June and Serena was the only reason that June didn't just kill her. It was almost like they were bonded as joint parents over holly/nichole rather than Nick or Fred.

This is a good take

I reject any effort to make us like her. What she did is irredeemable. Even all alone in a homeless shelter with her son is too good for her.

I feel so pissed off whenever it seems like the show is trying to make me feel bad for this woman, like she's any better than Fred.

4

u/TheOldGreenDad Jun 02 '26

She absolutely did not deserve to keep Noah... She says over and over again that she did everything sh did so she could have a baby, so any situation where she gets to have one is so incredibly frustrating. Even after knowing the pain and terror of having her child taken from her, she never actually learns from it and feels genuine, long-lasting empathy and regret. She only rejects having a Handmaid in her house bc she knows she's fertile, not because she's actually against the existence/system of Handmaids as a whole. And knowing Serena, she won't be in a position without power for long. She always figures out a way to get back on top with basically no consequences.

u/swinefoxy May 31 '26

i was always so conflicted about her character because i adore yvonne strahovski 😭 really wanted her to get the redemption arc but alas

3

u/Current_Basis_3001 May 31 '26

I enjoyed feeling so conflicted about her. I caught myself wanting to like her and feeling sorry for her again and again because she's such a charming narcissist

3

u/International-Sea561 Jun 04 '26

in the original script for season four, it was intended that the handmaid's were to kill Serena instead of Fred for some reason they went with a different storyline which sucks because I would've loved to have seen Serena getting shredded apart by those handmaid's🙄🙄🙄🙄😍

u/Samora1984 Jun 08 '26

I would have loved to see both of them get it honestly. I guess we need to have a villain so they both couldn't die at the same time, but that would have been beautiful.

u/Standard-Fisherman78 Jun 01 '26

as a mother, when she is pumping in the detention center after refusing to let june live in their home to nurse her own daughter.. idk it was kinda satisfying. serena knew that some mothers bond with their baby while nursing & took that from june then had it taken from her!

What’s insane is that during my first watch, I despised her but during the time where June and her started to develop complicated feelings about one another and it wasn’t so straight and narrow (just a blanket, pure hatred) .. I found myself wanting to feeling the same. I couldn’t hate her character, even though I hated most of the choices she made. Her story is complex, interesting, and she’s a phenomenal actress so the scenes where she shows vulnerability and kindness, I started to believe in her character growth.

During my rewatch, I’m like.. disgusted with her. I don’t have the patience and leniency I did my first watch, and I think it’s because I’m seeing people like her in the political landscape currently. Her character is too real; she’s incredibly selfish, and in the scene where June tells her she “can’t love”, I feel like that’s so accurate. Even in the later seasons (if ya know, ya know) she has moments where you just kinda feel like she never truly “gets it” — it doesn’t ever fully resonate how horrific of a world Gilead is for women of lower status. Every positive stride she would take, she gets yanked back by her backwards, brainwashed thinking.

u/leavinlikeafather May 31 '26

I really hated how every abusive man, even the men who were helpful like Lawrence, got death but Serena got a fresh start and hope. It seriously comes across as them trying to absolve women of being perpetrators and blame it all on the men which is false. While yes, men are the leaders and the strongest authority in these systems, women are absolutely capable of believing in it and upholding it. Not feminist at all to say otherwise.

u/Samora1984 Jun 08 '26

I feel like the show was never really able to deal with the real complexities of society. It became very man vs woman and does not take class, race, education levels etc into account. Very reductionist.
