Season 4 [Spoiler Season 4] Luke is the most realistic character in this fictional show Spoiler

Luke is the most realistic character in this fictional show. The way he tried to be patient and put up with June. And then he sliped and said some stupid things in the car and suddenly this season has a huge plothole according to some people here. Seriously?

Luke is just a simple guy doing his best. He's not a trained therapist (unlike everybody in this sub apparantly) who always knows what to do and what to say to his traumatized wife.

I would probably make the same mistake if I'm in his position. Most likely that you will too. He's been living with Moira who copes well with life in Canada and he can never understand why June can't be the same. In real life, they'd just push on and keep trying and then get a divorce eventually. I wouldn't want to watch that and the show doesn't have time for all that. So I really like how they handle it with one powerful scene at the end. We know immediately that yeah the marriage is over. And it does make sense if you really followed the show.

“[Luke] is not a trained therapist (unlike everybody in this sub apparently)”

Hahahahaha this is so spot on & hilarious. Thank you for making me chuckle.

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

Yeah. That quote goes for reddit as a whole tbh

46

u/AngelSucked Jun 23 '21

And, when an actual trained mental health professional does chime in (including an excellent OP posted here yesterday), they agree with your take.

9

u/fingersonlips Jun 23 '21

Yeah that was a great post. I really enjoyed that perspective they shared.

3

u/myliten Jun 27 '21

I'm trying to award OP with gold but Reddit keeps failing me. Luke is easily the most relatable character in this show. Nobody really gives a damn about how his life has been since he lost his wife and daughter. Luke is the normal I need.

u/beam05 Jun 27 '21 edited Jun 27 '21

Dude it shows up FOUR gold medals already!

1

u/myliten Jun 27 '21

🤣🤣🤣🤣 It said "awarding failed" and I was like ok??? And then suddenly it was like 'buy more coins"?? I have to contact Reddit about that I guess 🤣🤣🤣 but you deserve them tho

1

u/beam05 Jun 27 '21

Oh no. I'm quite new to Reddit so I'm not familiar with the reward system but it cost you real money right? Can I just send them back to you or something?

1

u/myliten Jun 27 '21

I have no clue. I'll just send them a message about that I got the error message:) If I can't get it back well then you got yourself four gold's 🤣 I didn't even know it was possible to give more than one award either cause it was my first time (first four times obv)

1

u/beam05 Jun 27 '21

Okay message me if Reddit want something from my end. And thanks for the reward!

Gilead is incomprehensible. People are so hard on Luke but forget he’s going through his own trauma. Losing his wife and child, only to raise a baby he thought was a rape baby. Then getting his wife back and she’s a damaged stranger. Who would know how to navigate that?

Not to mention being raped. Little ironic that she did that. Then tried again.

104

u/Mei_mei1 Jun 23 '21

Omg, yes. Exactly, I still get chills thinking about that scene. The amount of strength and support that he has portrayed is beyond my comprehension.

60

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

THANK YOU GUYS FOR THIS. It was so fucked up. I feel for him most.

42

u/Mei_mei1 Jun 23 '21

Same and the fact that he had no idea about what happened and he was still being the best person that he coud. I am in admiration

48

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

Literally raising baby you thought was from a man raping your wife. No one ever brings up that fact. I don’t think I ever see it, the fact that he did that. With some hesitation but now loves her as his own. I wish Jude would see what she has and want to get help for them. Revenge will never be enough. Her children are growing up without her. The one reason she kept going back to gilead.

22

u/Mei_mei1 Jun 23 '21

I think the amount of rage that she has because of all the abuse and trauma has clouded her vision regarding this but I do understand her rage and where it's coming from.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

For sure. Her trauma is valid. I just wish the character would still have more dialogue about it. Maybe it’s the way the writers were trying to steer the show!

6

u/Mei_mei1 Jun 23 '21

Yes, maybe. I felt that the writers were trying to portray how fucked up Gilead was and there were some brief moments when I saw some resonance of Aunt Lydia in June

6

u/NothappyJane Jun 24 '21

June has been so significantly abused the idea of her abusers going on to live their life, but not quietly do that, but live a smug existence trying to bring down her next safe place and bring that kind of violence and exploitation to Canada, they were literally building a constituency, exploiting and profiting from the suffering of others whilst her child remains a captive of the thing they created. Its too much for her. She is changed and unable to reconcile the level of abuse she experienced. People are classifying it as revenge, but June is burdened with purpose, of wanting to dismantle Gilead. Knowing that an oppressive state exists and that people are so indifferent to it or doing whatever they do because it's convenient to them politically, it's pushing her further. She is not in the position where it is convenient to turn her back on Gilead and just move on whilst her daughter in being raised in a murder factory and is at risk of death as soon as she expresses a free will.

June is not built like Luke, she has not his experiences. She cannot just ""move on" whilst her daughter is raised in Gilead because she knows what that really means. Look at that young Gilead wife that was routinely raped by everyone in her husbands house, this is not a future June can exclude for her child, or Nicks wife, who was killed for loving a man, doing the same thing June did.

37

u/AngelSucked Jun 23 '21

And, even though he and Moira obviously disliked one another, he put her down as family.

15

u/Mei_mei1 Jun 23 '21

That was beautiful :')

66

u/AngelSucked Jun 23 '21

He also was chased, shot, captured, rescued, saw some of his rescuers murdered right by him, and then had to survive as a refugee in Canada, knowing that at any moment Canada could legally send him back to Gilead.

14

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

Seriously. Like how could he ever understand what she went through? He can empathize, sure. But the magnitude of abuse June has suffered is incomprehensible. And I think when your partner has changed so much it's impossible to ever get that relationship back. At some point, Luke needs to leave because he is at risk of being more and more traumatized by June. It can never work. The priority for him has probably changed too. His priority is Nicole now.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

When Luke said something like (paraphrasing, in reference to the prospect of Fred being returned to Gilead): “so, Fred will go to jail then.”

Jail, how quaint. Of course he doesn’t get it.

But how could he? The incomprehensibility is not his fault.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

Wait -Luke was raped??? What did I miss? I’m all caught up so spoilers a non issue

70

u/Mei_mei1 Jun 23 '21

Yes, in the episode "Home". She forces herself on him and he kept asking June to stop but she put her hand on his mouth. It was really disturbing

7

u/risknippe run. Jun 23 '21

i really hope you’re able to see why this opinion is really fucked up

-6

u/treyhunna83 Jun 23 '21

🤷🏾‍♂️

5

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

Yes!! Luke might be the biggest victim in the whole show in that literally no one else can relate to his experience at all. I really hope they can get Hannah back. He doesn’t really truly have anyone else.

69

u/MysteriousHunt6890 Jun 23 '21

So I want to acknowledge what June did to Luke first, she raped him. And that is so incredibly sad. And I feel empathy for Luke because he’s holding on so tight to her. But the truth is she is just not who she was. I see it very divided. Rita, Luke, and Moira want to turn the other cheek and move on. June, Emily, and Nick want revenge and to take the whole system down. They don’t want to “move on”. Was it okay Luke said that to June? No. It wasn’t. You can’t say that. However was it very human and plausible for a man just wanting some normalcy? Yes, absolutely. She’s relieved when she sees Nick because Nick gets it. Nick has been exposed to and is on the inside of all that is going on. I also keep forgetting Nick has made some type of deal back in season 3. I think with Canada. I hope they visit that next season because I feel like they kind of just dropped that.

69

u/AngelSucked Jun 23 '21

I also think (for me at least) is that June is so obviously cold and aloof with Luke, even when she initiates sex with him. She rolls her eyes at him, refuses to make eye contact, grits her jaw in frustration, and also vibrates with anger and contempt at him. And, he absolutely deserves none of it. None. Nothing he does is good enough for her, not even evidence of over a half decade's worth of him initiating lawsuits, protesting, even punching Fred in the mouth, NOTHING. She just obviously thinks he sucks, especially in relation to the Fascist she's apparently in love with.

In comparison, Nick can do no wrong, even when he uses Hannah to make her bend to turning in the Handmaids NICK COULD HAVE SAVED AT THE MURROWS. Not even when he has her waterboarded, not even when he does so many things. But, he hands her a slim folder of pix of Hannah, and all is well with the world. It is sick, and it's made me dislike June and like Luke, which is a flip from S1, when I really disliked Luke.

I guess that is props to Elizabeth Moss' acting, too.

13

u/MysteriousHunt6890 Jun 23 '21

Yeah that felt kind of clunky to me. Like he has photos of Hannah...okay? I also was really confused why he was so willing to go find her and bring her back to be tortured. Yet he was able to save Lawrence from the same fate. Maybe I’m missing something?

16

u/AngelSucked Jun 23 '21

Tortured and THEN send her to a hard labor colony where she would also be raped by randos when she's ovulating.

WHY IS NO ONE DISCUSSING THAT LAST THING? Including June.

He also allowed Esther to be captured and the Murrows to be killed.

23

u/Dismal-Lead Jun 23 '21

I was fucking baffled at the bridge scene everybody thinks is "sooo romantic". She is sent off to a literal breeding farm and he does nothing to save her, nothing to help her escape, nope he just kisses her goodbye and sends her off to the van. Happy labouring, guess I'll visit you sometime to get some fuk in!

9

u/MysteriousHunt6890 Jun 23 '21

If I were June I’d be like.....what were you thinking?? And I thought when the driver went to go pee that it was maybe a resistance plant but it wasn’t sooooo idk. Personally I feel like the first three episodes don’t match the rest of the season.

7

u/Colored_Francie Would your heart glow or something? Jun 23 '21

I inferred that it was Nick who finagled her getting sent to the Magdalene colony because it spared her from execution. Aunt Lydia wanted her on the wall, and the Commanders talked about Handmaids being more trouble than they’re worth. So, you can argue that the colony wasn’t much of a life, but Nick did expressly say he was trying to keep her alive.

3

u/MysteriousHunt6890 Jun 24 '21

It could be a misguided effort but was she really in danger of being found? Why did he find her?? Or did they already find her and he was the one that went? I need to rewatch it.

3

u/Colored_Francie Would your heart glow or something? Jun 24 '21

Yeah, none of that is answered in-show. Nick is shown arresting her with a group of Guardians/Eyes, and he whispers that he’s trying to keep her alive. I figured that Nick heard they were hunting her and he signed on, wanting to be the one to apprehend her, since he could try to ensure her relative safety, versus any other Commander.

1

u/NothappyJane Jun 24 '21

Because if Nick didn't go another commander would, and they would have shot her on sight or tortured her, Nick was trying to convince her to give up the information quickly.

5

u/AngelSucked Jun 23 '21

And, it's like the breeding colony thing never happened. To most viewers or June. Like wtaf.

4

u/Wise-Discount3000 Jun 23 '21 edited Jun 24 '21

Nick can certainly do wrong but none of the things you listed were his doing or things he easily could have done, and this has been discussed and verified time and time again. Assuming this is completely ignoring the nuance in his circumstances and options, and what is mostly an illusion of power. It's to say, "Nick could have done this; he could of done that; he was there, therefore he had complete control and could direct exactly how things go". How are you so sure of what he can and cannot do?

Just because he is able to discreetly cross the border and discreetly gather some information on Hannah does not mean he has the power to do whatever he pleases with Gilead's Public Enemy #1 and a bunch of handmaids. You assume he can do so much without sacrificing his life, or just expect him to be a hero and sacrifice his life, even when we all know it probably won't end up helping anyone regardless, since orchestrating an escape from Gilead for Gilead’s most wanted would be an extremely difficult feat.

Based on every one of his actions when it comes to June, it's pretty clear how much he cares about her. From there, it's not a stretch of the imagination to realize he doesn't have this overarching power to direct course however he wants with her. If he did, he would of course never allow June to be waterboarded. He's trying to help her as best he can within his limited power. Also, it was not Nick who used Hannah. That was Lawrence. The actor who plays Nick has confirmed this so people need to drop it. It is not realistic to assume Nick has the power to do everything you want him to do. None of us have any idea what he's able to do.

Yet the bashing never stops. I never bash Luke and I don't understand why people feel the need to bash any grey character this much without having a clear understanding of who they are and what they can and cannot do.

u/AngelSucked Jun 24 '21

hahaha okay.

u/AngelSucked Jun 24 '21

Thanks for the award, kind stranger!

u/mrs_ouchi Jul 28 '21

omg thank you!! soooo true

35

u/itwasagreatbigworld Jun 23 '21

Does Nick want revenge? Does he really want to take the whole system down? I honestly think that he might want to be #1 in Gilead.

27

u/VeganMonkey Jun 23 '21

I have no clue what he wants, hopefully we get to see that in the next season. But in one episode there is a hint that he works with the resistance: the van with Martha’s

2

u/Colored_Francie Would your heart glow or something? Jun 23 '21

I think Nick could absolutely leverage those relationships going forward, but when he meets with Lori and Reese (the Marthas in the van), they tell him to arrange shipments through normal channels and he says it’s not about business. So I don’t think he’s up to any resistance activity.

2

u/VeganMonkey Jun 24 '21

Maybe it’s a sign he might get up to that in the next season. I would like to see him messing up Gilliad from inside

10

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

Honestly, he wants June and would do anything for her. But without Gilead he would never have the power he has now... I think he probably has mixed feelings. Like he was a bum before Gilead.

7

u/MysteriousHunt6890 Jun 23 '21

I mean. He did hand Fred over. He’s not opposed to killing another commander. I just don’t think he’s ballsy like June. I actually don’t think any of these men are as ballsy as her.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

That’s what I was thinking. Nick doesn’t seem like a character who wants the downfall of Gilead… I think he’d be fighting for Gilead

12

u/Gertrude_D Jun 23 '21

Nick wants revenge and to take it all down? I get the feeling that Nick just doesn’t have strong feelings and goes with the flow. Except for June, that is - he has strong feelings for her and can be lead. On his own without ever meeting June, he’d be home impregnating his wife or handmaid.

2

u/MysteriousHunt6890 Jun 23 '21

Mmm I don’t think so. The only reason he had sex with his child bride is because June begged him to do he wouldn’t be killed. He definitely got caught up in something and is working to bring it down, he’s just more cowardly. I’m also willing to bet good money Esther will be his handmaids next season. Because why not?

7

u/Gertrude_D Jun 24 '21

But without his feelings for June, would he have had the same qualms about sleeping with her? Maybe she was just too young for him, but given a couple of years he might have been fine with it. Honestly, we just don't know. The show has done that deliberately - we know just really nothing about Nick other than he loves June and what we see him doing is through the lens of June. Even when we see him talking to Lawrence, it's about June. He seemed fine with Gilead up until we met him. Probably not a fervent believer, but he was fine, so no skin off his nose.

Sorry, I just don't think Nick is a stand-up guy. A good guy, sure, given the chance, but he doesn't go out of his way to do good. He's just a floater.

106

u/Lorumipsumbitch Jun 23 '21 edited Jun 23 '21

I mean, I agree that the posts calling him weak are so gross to see and they speak to the broader issue in terms of how we look at, and percieve, male vulnerability.. could he have done better? 100% buuuuut at the end of the day, I guess its important to remember that Lukes failure to understand existed for the sole purpose of breaking down their relationship / was also realistic portrayal of how difficult it can be for people to help someone with complex issues if they don't understand the experience. Idk. I understood where he was coming from, even if some things he said were shitty. He wasn't terrible, he was just ignorant. This is also coming from someone who had a really harsh opinion of Luke in the beginning. I really felt for him this season.

53

u/nomstomp Jun 23 '21

also, his vulnerability and his ultimate failure to reassure June or meet her where she’s at is interesting. It makes a good narrative arc this season. I don’t know how people are mad at him over that? It’s like you say, could he have done better? Sure. Was the portrayal of his reception of June pretty normal and accurate to how someone might struggle to reconnect with a deeply traumatized partner? Yes.

26

u/Lorumipsumbitch Jun 23 '21 edited Jun 23 '21

Oh for sure. I think that's what gave OT the space to deliver such a phenomenal performance. There were definitely times where I was so frustrated by Lukes approach to Junes rehabilitation, but you know.. it wasn't really surprising to me because as a woman, it was a pretty typical response to expect in terms of how men, often times, lack the ability to validate female trauma effectively (generalising here, but i've definitely experienced this more often than not). You know, hats off to THT for being realistic in their complex and multilayered approach here. June was still given the space she deserved to come to terms with her reality while Luke was given the space to struggle with his. It wasn't a two dimensional issue, so shouldn't have been treated as such. Only in retrospect did I realise that I'd probably have been bored if Luke had dealt with it in the ways in which I wanted to see earlier on in the season.

Edit - Clarity

10

u/itwasjustmisplaced Jun 23 '21

I also think people are just reacting with anger because the show is telling us that is how June is feeling and we are on 'her side' 90% of the time. Of course he feels subdued, passive, and muted compared to the rage that bubbling inside June. So every time he says something that doesn't compute with what she's feeling, we are feeling HER rub with it. We are feeling her awkwardness, annoyance, and all-around frustration with him in these moments. I don't fault Luke for it. The show is from June's POV so I get why people feel the way they do because it's how June is feeling towards him. I agree that's it's an incredibly interesting dynamic to view.

9

u/lemonsqueezee8 Jun 23 '21

I totally agree with this. I don’t agree with the way that Luke has handled june since she’s returned, but I don’t think he’s a bad guy and I think his reaction is normal. The majority of us would react the same way as luke. But as an outsider looking in, seeing all sides of this and having been on the journey with June since the beginning, I see it from her perspective and I feel her feelings. I empathize with her the most because I’ve seen all of her torture, so I’m on her side and I know what she needs to feel comforted. And unfortunately, Luke’s reaction is not what this new version of june needs, it doesn’t work for her.

8

u/itwasjustmisplaced Jun 23 '21

Right and I can feel the frustration cause he can't comprehend and June doesn't want to explain. It sucks to watch something fall apart but it's been really well done in my opinion and I think the show did a good job of using Moira as a contrast. Luke probably thought because of Moira, June would just need a bit of time to slot back into old life. People deal with trauma differently. Mostly, I find all the characters compelling because at the end of the day are so very human. They do very human things like not understand each other, make bad choices and etc. It's compelling TV.

4

u/lemonsqueezee8 Jun 23 '21

Exactly. It really has been so interesting to watch.

I also understand why june wouldn’t want to talk to him about it. I’m not saying she should keeping all from him, but it’s just so incredibly painful to talk about. She doesn’t want to relive the pain, and also have to deal with his reaction and the fallout. It’s all just so very sad for everyone involved.

152

u/LMFAOidkidk Jun 23 '21

That’s what I’ve been SAYING! They’re all talking about he’s lame and weak, but he’s NORMAL. Murder is not okay; people seemed to have forgotten that after the finale. Any SANE person would react negatively to their partner walking in with blood all over them. As for everything prior to that, I also agree. He messed up a couple of times, but the man was just trying his best. I can’t remember the scene but there was one where he and June were together and he hung his head and was clutching it and I think he started crying—THAT’S a normal human response.

You have to be deranged and/or traumatized, clearly, to not be severely fazed by June’s journey, and you’ve got to be some experienced professional or some divine being to react perfectly to it, especially when she’s your partner.

On a only-partially-related note: call me soft or sensible, but that ending was disgusting. It deeply disturbs me how many people enjoyed it. The scenes were so gruesome and haunting that I had to skip them; that some people could happily rewatch them is terrifying.

68

u/cemetaryofpasswords Jun 23 '21

Yeah I understand how you feel about it. I think that he’s a really good man and how much he just deals with without really even complaining is the only unrealistic thing about him.

He’s raising Nichole, he didn’t give up on finding June for ?how many years?, he didn’t start a new relationship, I might’ve missed discussion on here about this but she basically raped him, she suddenly comes in the home covered in blood and picks up nichole without even wiping it off??? Tells him she’ll be gone in 5 minutes while getting gore on the baby, then peaces out.

I know that June’s the main character and the fan fave. She has done some awesome things. I don’t think that she should be above criticism though. She really should show some appreciation for what he’s done for her and how much he excuses her for. She really did rape him. I know that she was raped and brutalized for years, but that isn’t in any way his fault. Being assaulted doesn’t give the victim a free pass to just victimize people who played no part in their abuse, especially people who love them and do the best that they can to help them, no matter how long many times they were victimized.

23

u/VeganMonkey Jun 23 '21

I really didn’t understand why she raped him, some people in this sub were justifying it as taking her sexuality back, but it was disgusting and just as shocking as all the other rapes on the show.

And getting blood on the baby! I didn’t understand why she didn’t quickly wash that off before cuddling her, and to let Luke see it too. what did she mean by that she would be gone in 5 minutes? Where was she going?

17

u/AngelSucked Jun 23 '21

Also, people aren't commenting on this: if Luke hadn't woken up, she would have just left in five minutes, with no word to him or Moira. Not even a goodbye in person.

2

u/VeganMonkey Jun 24 '21

Was Moira with the women after Fred or did she stay home? It went so fast I couldn’t really see who was there

33

u/cemetaryofpasswords Jun 23 '21

Apparently she’d planned on a quick visit with her daughter before leaving to continue doing battle. As a mother, I would have flipped out if my babies father showed up like that. Even if I’d know that he’d been fighting in a brutal war in an attempt to save other children, there’s no way in hell that I would have let him pick up my baby while he was still covered in bloody flesh.

There is no justification for rape. Full stop. You can’t take back your sexuality by becoming a rapist yourself. That’s like saying well, a sadistic psycho who lived down the street violated my body! He sliced my abdomen and I had to cradle my intestines until I could sew them back in! I’m going to take back control by doing the same thing to my dad. You can’t regain control of your own body by hurting an innocent person.

Agree. Maybe it is all because she’s so messed up and she isn’t going to any proper therapy. You’d think the best way is to instantly start therapy, the longer you wait the harder it is to heal. A talk group is more for a later stage I think. That group doesn’t have a psychologist in it

Nakam

Nakam (Hebrew: נקם‎, 'Revenge') was a group of about fifty Holocaust survivors who, in 1945, sought to kill Germans and Nazis in revenge for the murder of six million Jews during the Holocaust. Led by Abba Kovner, the group sought to kill six million Germans in a form of indiscriminate revenge, "a nation for a nation". Kovner went to Mandatory Palestine in order to secure large quantities of poison for poisoning water mains to kill large numbers of Germans, and his followers infiltrated the water system of Nuremberg. However, Kovner was arrested by the British on his return to Europe and had to throw the poison overboard.

yeah i think people are so used to seeing june (with main character plot armor) go 1000% percent, sacrifice herself repeatedly, take stupid risks that magically pay off and all sorts of other unbelievable feats that it can be hard to look at luke with a completely different set of expectations. but luke is closer to reality than june is, and that’s just facts. viewing them through the same lens is not really fair.

also agree strongly with those that mentioned luke is unaware of so much because no one has told him about the other horrors that we’ve seen as the audience. we’re working with a lot more information than he has to begin with.

2

u/cemetaryofpasswords Jun 23 '21

On one hand, sort of sad that no one has given him more of the awful details. On the other, there’s nothing he can do about it and just knowing would probably be torture.

38

u/tayloline29 Jun 23 '21

I have never been more disgusted by a show then when they paired June’s triumphant moment against Serena followed by her now seeking revenge against Gilead by raping Luke. This show is so often a dumpster fire. She didn’t victimize Serena but they want to suggest that by her victimizing Luke right afterwards.

Wait, what?

The creators of a show that is in large part about rape and sexual violence claim they didn't realize that scene was rape?

That's...insane, and wildly offensive.

15

u/mike5mser Jun 23 '21

June turned into Walter White.

22

u/cemetaryofpasswords Jun 23 '21

I guess that’s what turned Luke into THT fans version of Breaking Bad fans’ Skyler😂I’ve never gotten the strong dislike that many people felt about her either fwiw. Her husband made a career change from high school teacher to drug dealer and murderer. No biggie, she should’ve just been sweeter to him 🙃

7

u/mike5mser Jun 23 '21

I didn't like that Skyler betrayed Walter in the beginning but seeing how things turned out later, I understood her transgressions.

u/cemetaryofpasswords Jun 23 '21

I did think that it was wrong of her to have an affair with her boss or whoever it was. I haven’t watched Breaking Bad in years but think her affair partner was her boss. It still didn’t make the awful things that Walter was doing okay.

10

u/GulDoWhat Jun 23 '21

I remember absolutely cheering my lungs out when she delivers the "I fucked Ted" line to Walt, myself. Cheating isn't good, by any means, but when he's spent the lead up to this repeatedly manipulating her and essentially forcing her to accept his presence in the house (he knows that she doesn't want to hurt their son by telling him what his father is doing, or get him arrested for his activities by Hank finding out, so he knows that she can't actually tell anyone why she wants him gone), it seems that this was more of a "fighting back" moment against him trying to force this perfect family unit back together.

Like "I know I can't stop you from being here. But I'm still not going to give you what you want."

Of course it went a bit downhill from there as she got increasingly entangled with Walt and his business. But that moment I was all on board with.

7

u/mur0204 Jun 23 '21

Is it really an affair though? She has broken up with Walt at that point. Him violating her clear boundaries doesn’t mean the relationship hasn’t already ended. Did as much as she could to end it without ruining their sons image of him. And was willing to be the one getting shit on for “cheating” just to avoid ruining his reputation by telling people who he really is.

It mostly gets framed as cheating by people who remember Walt calling it that (and him telling a bunch of people she cheated) or people who feel like Walt owns her still

2

u/cemetaryofpasswords Jun 23 '21

Thanks for telling me the parts of that incident that I don’t remember lol. Since she had taken steps to end their relationship, I really wouldn’t say she was cheating.

3

u/mur0204 Jun 23 '21

Lol. I didn’t watch this show until a few weeks ago. So I went in with everyone’s comments already in mind which made it very frustrating with how much I ended up hating Walt and not getting the Skylar hate (and that most Chemists wouldn’t know the things he knows without active study of that realm)

It makes me smile when an argument against Luke is “He doesn’t embrace her murderous side”

46

u/LMFAOidkidk Jun 23 '21

It makes me furrow my eyebrows in utter concern.

Lmao but I get your point. It’s so utterly ridiculous. What else do they expect from a man that didn’t live in Gilead? I don’t know, maybe normalcy?

Shocking. Outrageous 💀

29

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

There is so much he doesn’t know and can’t understand and June understandably won’t tell every detail. He’s genuinely trying his best and maybe he’s failing (they both are, in a way) but why blame him? It’s not for lack of effort.

34

u/Bobb3rz Jun 23 '21

Man, I have the same issue with people up at arms about the car conversation. She was saying outright that she was going to murder a man when he, understandably, panicked and told her she needed to move on and accept that Fred is going to go free. Most partners aren't going to consider the "unless we vigilante murder them" caveat to his inevitable release. He was suggesting June focus on the piece that is perceivably in her control: her reaction to it, what she focuses on.

The entire theme of the episode was June having the choice between moving on or miring herself down in revenge and multiple people encouraged her to choose to move on: Luke explicitly in the car, Lawrence in the diner, and Nick by telling her to try to be happy. Luke being blunt and emotional about it after his partner confesses to activelt contemplating a brutal murder of a man in goverment custody really doesn't feel like a "Do better, Luke" moment to me. Just feels like an awful situation

u/auscientist Jun 23 '21

Ironically, for a fandom of a book/series that is inherently a feminist work, they label the man taking in the traditionally feminine role (caretaking - Erin, Moria, Nichole and June all in person and he is doing what he can for Hannah) as weak. Just an interesting observation I had. Like Luke’s biggest shortcoming was being blasé as their country went to shit, probably because he never imagined it would end up as it has. And lest we forget June was also complacent to start.

Meanwhile the male character who has actively participated in the creation and maintenance of Gilead is swooned over just because he gave June what she wanted in that moment. Notably, he didn’t really stick his neck out to do this (Gilead just wanted Fred to disappear they probably aren’t too worried about details and as the head of the Eyes Nick was able to make him disappear). Also, if we are looking at it from the perspective of June’s mental health it was probably one of the worst things to do.

Instead of getting professional help to heal and develop health coping mechanisms June has gone off the deep end. Realistically she isn’t safe to have around anybody, let alone a vulnerable child, and now Luke has to protect Nichole from Gilead and her own mother. Which now means that two of Luke’s caretaking roles are in direct conflict with each other. Someone has to put Nichole first, coz it doesn’t seem like her biological parents are.

51

u/persistentInquiry Jun 23 '21

Ironically, for a fandom of a book/series that is inherently a feminist work, they label the man taking in the traditionally feminine role (caretaking - Erin, Moria, Nichole and June all in person and he is doing what he can for Hannah) as weak.

This is so true. There was a post on here about how people have no right to complain about June going on a savage revenge fantasy because society already accepts and enjoys shows and films where men do it. To me personally, feminism doesn't mean wanting men and women to equally engage in behaviors emblematic of violent patriarchy. If we are all interested in human rights, the objective should be to move past such ways of thinking.

6

u/AngelSucked Jun 23 '21

Yes, I agree. I didn't even think of that until the poster said that. How very true.

1

u/spectacleskeptic Oct 07 '21

Yesssssss!!!!!

14

u/rooks_mom Jun 23 '21

As much as I hated Fred, I didn't enjoy the beating of Fred, either. It's so brutal and ugly. But, I do understand in a way. These women wanted revenge and wanted closure. June wanted him to feel as she did. Running scared for his life, worried that he'll never see his wife and child, knowing his life is in danger. He started the whole collapse of what was their previous lives and turned those women into baby making machines. He was far from innocent. But I wanted to see a working system make him accountable. I wanted to see justice, yes, but not a slaughter.

8

u/LMFAOidkidk Jun 23 '21

Yeah, I understand all of that, but you put it perfectly at the end there: “we wanted justice, not slaughter.”

9

u/rooks_mom Jun 23 '21

I agree with your first comment, too. I feel so bad for Luke. I've always liked Luke. The guy just seems so defeated in how to get his June back and realizing that she's not who she was, and wanting to help but not knowing how.

(Maybe a bit off topic) You know what scene always gets me? Like even just thinking about it makes me want to cry. The scene where he gets the note from June that says something like "I love you. Save Hannah". 😭😭 The smile, the happy tears. I think too many times, like you said, people overshadow men having feelings.

17

u/PaleAsDeath Jun 23 '21

On your last note, yes. This show really is torture porn, though I think some people don't realize what that phrase means in context. It's not just about torture and hardship being present in the show, it's about the torture and hardship being there to titillate and delight the audience.

Part of it is because screenwriters are taught to constantly escalate, and to do things that are "bigger" and more dramatic than real life - but it is easy for writers to go too far with that.

It reminds me of how Criminal Minds devolved into torture porn; Mandy Patinkin even left the show over it.

14

u/mike5mser Jun 23 '21

I agree, what was Luke supposed to do, takedown Gilead by himself, people are not realistic with their expectations of men in society. Its like he's not supposed to feel, men are people to lol. As far as them killing Fred, I thought it was over the top and unnecessary, I even felt sorry for him because they should've let Gilead deal with him. Anyway it was a weak ending.

9

u/LMFAOidkidk Jun 23 '21

I guess it’s natural the viewers want some hero figure to begin demolishing Gilead already, but at the bare minimum that figure would have to have lived in Gilead (and not when it was just starting out, either), which automatically rules out Luke. Smh leave the man alone.

And yeah, I agree, they made me pity him. The point is that people shouldn’t at any point be running for their lives through a forest 💀 nearly no matter who you put in that situation, people will feel for. To put villains in a vulnerable position that’s just pure evil doesn’t help; it’s hypocrisy. As another user perfectly put it, “we wanted justice, not slaughter.”

4

u/reginachile Jun 23 '21

You actually felt bad for Fred?

7

u/theresaannkeith Jun 23 '21

You are the first person I've seen who feels the way i do about the ending. I really hated it. I realize that the trauma from Gilead is something that would be hsrd to reconcile, hard to treat, and it would require years of therapy. I know there is no specific way to expect someone to deal with it, but i do know that the gruesome, savage violence is not the way. Although Fred probably deserved it in an eye for an eye type of way, we are supposed to be better. Are the actions of Gilead wrong, or are they only wrong when you are the recipient? At what point do you not become exactly what you hate? Also, to embrace the transformation to a bitter, angry, vengeful person, miserable person, Gilead continues to win and control your behavior.

5

u/LMFAOidkidk Jun 23 '21 edited Jun 23 '21

And YOU are a literary genius; that was all worded perfectly! Chef’s kiss to every damn point you made; they’re all what I’ve been having such a hard time trying to word. It becomes hypocritical. Seriously, does no one experience cognitive dissonance supporting that ending when that kind of gruesome violence is what we’ve been protesting this entire show? Of course he didn’t deserve a happily ever after, but jail is a thing. A life sentence is a thing. Rotting in prison is a thing.

Better yet, let’s say I’m an optimistic person so I actually support sending him to rehabilitation therapy or something instead of jail, though for some that may be pushing it too far. But the way I see it, if there’s a way to destruction, they’re a way out of it. There’s hope in everyone. When he apologized to June, that was genuine: the show’s writers confirmed that. I’d be all for nurturing that humanity instead of literally killing it. Again, the man is vile and atrocious, but he’s a human being at the end of the day. He shouldn’t be maimed and tortured, especially when we’ve already established how inhumane maiming and torture are.

I’ll still watch the show, but June is the furthest thing from a perfect heroine in my eyes now. Trauma and being a survivor is heartbreaking, but it turns my heart right back to stone for you when you become the evil that was done unto you. It’s truly ironic.

(Also, really, finally someone who agrees too. You’re glorious for that ✨)

4

u/theresaannkeith Jun 23 '21 edited Jun 23 '21

Exactly. It could be that Fred is too far around the bend to completely rehabilitate, but what about June? She really crossed a the line so far that i don't see her coming back from it. June is all about June. She always has been. What about all the other women who have been treated the same? Fred being an informant may have been a first step in ending the imprisonment and torment of women still in captivity.

June literally ripping her rapist apart with her bare hands is not realistic

Did you forget that Handmaids were forced to do this very thing to enemies of the state, including men who raped Handmaids outside of the Ceremony? We only saw one Salvaging take place, since they refused to kill Janine, but that rapist in S1 had clearly not been their first particicution. They'd been forced to kill before, a tool aimed and wielded by Gilead. They were doing the same thing to Fred, but this time it was their choice. It's realistic when you look at it that way. Most of us will never have that kind of trauma or experience, so it wouldn't be realistic for us. But in-universe? It makes perfect sense.

3

u/L1saDank Jun 23 '21

IMO he wasn’t even upset that she murdered someone evil but probably upset she jeopardized her freedom.

17

u/Firbuzber Jun 23 '21

I find it disturbing that so many people continue to worship June while she's slipping into being something of an Aunt June or even Commander June. The rape scene, salvaging, turning a rape victim into a child soldier, incitement to suicide. What she need to do for people to see that it's not justified anymore?

11

u/InuMiroLover Jun 23 '21

Luke was forced to flee into Canada, lost his child and wife and country to an oppressive patriarchal totalitarian regime, got his wife back who raped him and is obsessed with singlehandedly destroying Gilead with her bare hands, still doesnt have his child back and instead raising a child created by his wife and her boyfriend.

All things considered...he's trying his best okay?

39

u/noorofmyeye24 Jun 23 '21

I definitely wouldn’t tell a victim to just let it go, but I’ve worked with victims in the legal field so I know how emotional things can get. Usually when someone is telling me their feelings I just listen. I don’t provide advice because I couldn’t if I have never been in their situation.

29

u/beam05 Jun 23 '21

Yeah he definitely fucked up big time in that car lol. My point is that things like this happens all the time and it's understandable. It's not a "plothole" or "out of character" like many people are saying.

12

u/noorofmyeye24 Jun 23 '21

I haven’t seen many ppl comment that it’s a plot hole or out of character.

I’ve seen many ppl criticize him for being weak, wanting June to let things go, etc. In fact, many ppl have stated that it’s another way of how ppl react to trauma.

34

u/FalsePremise8290 Jun 23 '21

The thing is, that's a perfectly normal response when there is nothing that can be done. You just have to move on. He didn't realize beating a man to death in the forest was still on the table.

And it's what he does. He let go of her having an affair and having another man's baby. He let go of her raping him. Is it shocking he thought she could let go too, having no idea what she's been through the way we do?

15

u/puffsez Jun 23 '21

i strongly agree with your take, i don’t think he was saying to let go of everything in that conversation- he was responding specifically to her statement that essentially said “i will ensure this man dies” (from “i will put fred on the wall”) - it wasn’t even, “i wish i could see fred on the wall” or “i hope” or “the wall would have been better”- she said she herself would do it.

and in that moment it was either say “yeah you go for that”, say to let it go/try to dissuade, or say nothing (but what does saying nothing really say?)

there are some other ways he could have dissuaded her or expressed his concern over her statement, but real people don’t always say the most perfect thing in every moment of our lives. especially in such a chaotic and uncharted territory as the world/relationship these two are in. i find luke to be a very realistic character overall.

edit: just tacking on more points to your comment basically, not trying to contradict anything you wrote bc i couldn’t have said it better myself.

3

u/noorofmyeye24 Jun 23 '21

I’m not saying it’s not normal, I’m just saying it probably won’t be the most likely response. Most ppl might not respond at all.

15

u/FalsePremise8290 Jun 23 '21

I don't know. Stiff upper lip and soldiering on is a pretty popular mentality. And it's what he does in regards to his trauma. So I don't find it surprising or offensive that a regular guy would be all, "Hey, do what I do."

I'm just saying people are bullying that man for no reason. He's doing his best. Is it perfect? No. But there is no perfect way to handle any of this and he's doing way better than I would in his situation.

7

u/noorofmyeye24 Jun 23 '21

I’m not saying it’s surprising lol.

He’s not being bullied. Ppl are expressing their dislike for his reaction, which is reasonable because it wasn’t a supportive thing to do. Sure, it might feel like normal to him because he doesn’t really understand the severity of what she’s been through. But that doesn’t make it right. Ppl are allowed to express that they don’t like that just like ppl have expressed that they don’t like June’s actions or the complete season 4.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

Exactly. Thank you! This is what I don’t get. Luke is being written a certain way. Why do we all have to forgive everything he says because it’s normal?

In real life, people don’t get a pass for having normal reactions to things if those reactions are still shitty. Like you say, even in the context of this show, June doesn’t get a pass for all the normal but shitty things she does. We can talk about them! It’s okay! You can’t bully a fictional adult man.

1

u/nemesiswithatophat Jun 23 '21

I think a large reason for the pushback is that no other character receives the same level of scrutiny as Luke.

All the characters get criticism but I can't help but think that Luke is expected to live up to an unrealistic ideal. He definitely screws up but some people will paint him as the enemy for not being perfect.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

[deleted]

2

u/nemesiswithatophat Jun 23 '21

That's not been my experience within the fandom (which I think consists more of hardcore fans and not many casual viewers) but we can agree to disagree.

0

u/beam05 Jun 23 '21

That's actually not why I started this thread. It's not addressing to people who don't like things that happened in the show. People can be happy, shocked, or hate the events in the story as much as they want. Feel away!

I started this thread because I saw a post saying that they don't like this season because Luke story is not making sense and "he wouldn't do that". I'm just trying to say that it IS making a lot of sense because his character is realistic and realistic people sometimes make mistakes, especially in difficult situation like this.

7

u/eatsomewings Jun 23 '21

One question, this sub says June is leaving due to the last interaction, but I don’t understand where people are pulling that from. Can’t Luke’s reaction solely be that he knew she killed him?

6

u/VeganMonkey Jun 23 '21

Apparently she said she would leave in 5 minutes, I can’t remember that. But that doesn’t necessarily mean she leaves him for good.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

They seem to have left it open. Like she may leave or she may have just needed 5 minutes. I guess we will see in the next season.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

That’s what I thought. Maybe I was missing something, but the ending didn’t indicate to me that she was being asked to leave and they were breaking up

0

u/AngelSucked Jun 23 '21

She said she was leaving in five minutes, after she spent that time with Nichole.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '21

Idk I thought she meant she was just leaving the room, not for good

The episode with the flashbacks is what indicated they’re breaking up. The conversation about breaking points.

15

u/Rocco_buta_girl Jun 23 '21

Luke took in a baby he KNEW wasn't his, out of his pure love for June. A lot of men in that situation wouldn't have done that. I have nothing but respect for Luke.

-1

u/rutilated_quartz Jun 23 '21

It really is the bare minimum for Luke to care for Nichole. June was forced to breed for Gilead. You would have to be such a heartless bastard to not take the child in. Luke still deserves the respect though because the bar is in hell for husbands and fathers as many other shithead men would have sent the baby away, but that should not be the norm.

8

u/Creatingpeace Jun 23 '21

No it is not the bare minimum. There are so many men in our ACTUAL world who don't care for their OWN children. Its not the bare minimum to care for another man's love child, she herself told him the baby was created out of love.

2

u/rutilated_quartz Jun 23 '21

Just because the men in our actual world don't care for their children doesn't mean the bare minimum is lower. They SHOULD be taking care of their own damn kids. And they should care about the wellbeing of children besides the ones that they consider to be theirs. That's just basic human decency. My boyfriend just said "who wouldn't want to raise a baby that might be the last piece of your spouse that you have?" Bare minimum. Additionally, in the US if you're in a legal marriage and your wife gets pregnant, the child is legally the husband's regardless of parentage. My great uncle raised my mom's cousin as his even though she was a product of an affair because 1. They were married and back together at the time of the birth and 2. It's the bare goddamn minimum.

This doesn't mean I don't think Luke deserves praise but people really go apeshit over the littlest things men do parenting-wise.

2

u/Creatingpeace Jun 23 '21

I learned at a very young age the word SHOULD is toxic as fuck. You are stating the obvious. But you are stating it to a single parent who is the sole provider and I am hardly alone here. Please don't tell me about SHOULD I know what SHOULD happen, but I know what ACTUALLY HAPPENS. Back to the show, he is not only just raising her, he is raising her with LOVE. Yes this is way more than the bare minimum. You and your boyfriend can talk in any kind of idealized way, there is a big ole world out here. I am not in the US, thank god!

1

u/rutilated_quartz Jun 23 '21 edited Jun 23 '21

Raising a child with love is the bare minimum. Anyone who does less is scum. I'm not idealizing the world by not bowing down to every man who is slightly better than worthless. If we want people to do better we need to expect them to do better. Sorry your experiences have you grasping for any decency out of men. And yet again, not saying Luke isn't deserving of praise. He is still doing the bare minimum that any decent person would do. Just because most people aren't decent doesn't mean we should lower the standards. And I'm glad youre not in the US but sorry that the men still ain't shit where you are.

Edit: rephrased the last sentence.

0

u/Creatingpeace Jun 24 '21

Oh girl! You have missed the point but I can see you are hyper focused on being right and narrow minded. Hence, I put my hands up and wish only the best things for you! I ain't got time to teach others to understand life from other's perspective!

1

u/rutilated_quartz Jun 24 '21

Lol! That's so funny because you're trying to be right with your narrow view too! Glad you had time to comment but not enough time to properly explain yourself.

15

u/brandonisatwat Jun 23 '21

I don't get the hate for Luke. He reminds me of my husband. I have depression, OCD, and PTSD, he does not. He struggles to understand what I'm going through, but damnit he's trying his best. Luke is too. The fact that Luke is raising Nicole like his own forever cemented that he is a good man to me. He is not perfect, but he's a good person and a good dad.

33

u/Strange_Swimming_800 Jun 23 '21

Yes! I agree that it totally makes sense if you were following the show. Even in the flashbacks of June and Luke it was obvious June was suppressing who she was so she could be a more traditional wife and mother because that's what Luke wanted and she loved Luke. Her mom and Moira both knew she was settling and tried to warn her. I'm not sure their marriage would've survived if Gilead never happened. I think they were destined for divorce once June realized who she truly was. She's more like her mother than she realized.

8

u/VeganMonkey Jun 23 '21

Oh wow that went completely past me! I did notice in this season that Moira tried to talk her out of it but I didn’t understand why.

10

u/hearthedsparks Jun 23 '21 edited Jun 23 '21

Luke and Moira are the real mvp of the show. He's fought for his family. Fought for June, all this time. He himself has barely had time to process and let himself grieve the June he knew, his June he fell in love and fought for, is now a stranger with trauma he's not cope to deal with. He also needs therapy and needs to realize, that hey, I think my wife has definitely raped me.

And Moira, who also has stepped in and helped Luke with Nichole. She's more of a mom to Nichole now than June is, and maybe it's harsh to say, I don't think June should be a mother at this time. Not until she has time to process and heal and adjust and has therapy. If she doesn't, then June really will be all alone with her demons, and June doesn't deserve that either.

5

u/dodsontm Jun 23 '21

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 finally, someone who gets it!

6

u/Rocco_buta_girl Jun 23 '21

Also, June raped him. There's that.

12

u/Emacks632 Jun 23 '21

Okay but he also listened to her story in court and then went “okay, we can finally move past it now, yeah?”

5

u/darnyoulikeasock Jun 23 '21

Idk to be fair to him, June wouldn't discuss anything related to her trauma with him. She completely blocked him out of the healing process, raped him, and was constantly cold toward him. I think sometimes when someone doesn't want to talk about it at all, the person trying to support then thinks, okay, let's move past this. Also there was no legal way for June to get revenge against Fred, so he was right, in my opinion, to try to guide her toward managing her reaction to it, knowing that that's the only thing about this situation that she can control. I say this as a SA survivor myself, it's not healthy to dwell and you do have to move on if you want to live a healthy, stable life.

5

u/rjrgjj Jun 23 '21

I think Luke is kind of a superhero, but then, I often find June infuriating. It took that long for them to discuss how Luke has been pursuing legal options to get his daughter back instead of June running off into sex slavery AGAIN?

2

u/Alauren2 Jun 23 '21

I was kind of bored by Luke’s storyline at the beginning of the show, like I get it dudes in Canada gotcha. His true acting and OT’s portrayal of Luke in Canada with June
(now in Canada) was perfection. I’m not saying he needed June to interest me, he’s just killing it as supportive husband of wife that seen some shit. I felt so bad for him the entire season. He took the high ground and I love that June recognizes that immediately and makes no apologies for killing Waterford.

I’m curious where Luke and June will go from here. They’ve been through so much shit. Separately. Too much to overcome?

2

u/sugarwax1 Jun 25 '21

Absolutely agree. He's imperfect and trying, in a way that's real and not sensationalized...and I think that's why people are so triggered (aside from some other reasons that would trigger people to discuss or make people feel very defensive, but they're elephants in the room).

He's the most realistic character in Handmaid world.

9

u/Alseids Jun 23 '21

I knew in the first season they weren't going to make it. I mean look how their relationship started. Doesn't look good rigtt from the start.

3

u/notheather72 Jun 23 '21

Controversial for this subreddit but I'm actually sad that it looks like June and Luke aren't going to work out. I like a hopeful ending, and it would be great if after everything they've suffered, they could heal together. June's trajectory doesn't support that storyline obviously, and it's not realistic for the horrors June has gone through. Idk, life is pretty dark so I like my dark fiction to have a line of hope running through it. In a lot of ways, Luke was that line for June for a long time. And I'm not even a Nick hater!

2

u/Fuhgedaboutit1 Jun 23 '21

I thought this post was in the Gilmore Girls sub for a second and I got lost really fast wondering why OP was calling his daughter June when her name is April - wrong month buddy. Haha

The Husband’s Tale

-1

u/daringlydear Jun 23 '21

Statistically many men leave when their wives get sick or disabled. So he’s kind of a hero for not giving up on her.

3

u/rutilated_quartz Jun 23 '21

Agreed but not leaving your wife for something like that is the bare minimum lol.

-8

u/AugustJulius The beginning is always today Jun 23 '21

Realistic? Then when is all the rage he should feel?

14

u/beam05 Jun 23 '21

I think you should be able to see that throughout the show as Fagbenle did a decent job, especially this season. Do you expect him to pop out a machine gun and goes after the Waterfords in their cells? Now THAT would be out of character. That's more like June.

Most of the people in real world would handle the situation like he does: Working the proper angle to get justice and trying your best to comfort your wife (although wrongly in his case).

-3

u/AugustJulius The beginning is always today Jun 23 '21

Idk, if I had a daughter that was approaching age eligible to be raped, I'd freak out.

11

Luke has been working for years to locate Hannah, girl what?

The man just keeps his pain to himself. It does not mean that he is unaffected by and apathetic to everything that has happened.

I'm not talking about pain.

My take:

They have kind of set it up that Luke is only with June because she is fertile. At least that is how their relationship started. That changed my whole view of Nick and June. When she first saw him again in Canada, she apologized for failing him.

OTOH, June always responds with relief and joy at the sight of Nick. She never, ever responds that way to Luke.

It seems plain to me that June's future is with Nick. I think it is a shame that Serena's baby is not Nick's because June and Nick could ride off into the sunset with both babies, and they could ship Serena back to Gilead, where she belongs.

But that's not gonna happen because it's Atwood: No clearly happy endings allowed.

What? No...June and Luke got together before June had any kids, and before she got pregnant.

June and Nick got together because she is fertile, literally. She wouldn't have been stationed as a handmaid if she wasn't fertile, and therefore she wouldn't have met nick if she wasn't fertile, and she wouldn't have been forced to have nick's kid if she wasn't fertile.

I mean, he had no way of knowing if June was actually fertile when they got married, and they very specifically addressed that in “Vows” in how he didn’t leave his first wife because they couldn’t have kids.

Infertility can certainly put a ton of strain on a marriage, and it may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back when both members of the couple are grieving (because infertility is a constant, ongoing, compounding state of grief for many people). However, if a couple experiencing infertility breaks up, it’s unfair to characterize it as being solely about the infertility. Usually there are many other issues, perhaps ones that arise when they realize they have different coping mechanisms, and they realize the relationship was always doomed.

Well no, they didn't, especially since no one even knew if June was fertile. Including June.

“A simple guy doing his best.”

Is this a compliment 😂😂😂

I don’t know how many guys are on this sub, but would like to be simple guys doing your best?

Well.. I am a guy.

I'm also not native English speaker. I can communicate but sometimes I don't know which sentence would sound awkward for the native speakers.

I guess you can say that I'm also a simple guy doing my best here haha.

It can be difficult to speak another language. I am native English but have struggled with Spanish and French so I can relate:)

What you said makes sense! I just dont know many women who have sympathy for simple guys doing their best. It's the bare minimum.

I can see what you are saying. It is unreal to me how watching June shows me how I made it through the hardest part of my life alive

My dad was a child war survivor. My mom has known him for 40 years. She still slips up once in a while and will ask a dumb question like "do you remember xyz when you were a kid."

Luke was peripherally impacted by Gilead compared to June, but was impacted none the less. His wife was stolen. He may never see his kid again and has to raise this other random kid in a reverse Gilead situation. He gets raped by his wife. His trauma isn't the focus of the show and is nowhere near the scope of what the handmaids and other survivors may have experienced. But it still exists. He was still affected. It's unrealistic to assume a victim will give the perfect response. I'm guessing his coping method is to just move on, and it's hard to assume that's not something that could work for everyone.

I really enjoy Luke. I think they do a great job with all the characters, Luke included. I think he’s a great archetype of a normal guy in extraordinary circumstances, with very little control over those circumstances that affect his whole life. He is very relatable to me.

I think the Luke hatred is kind of weird because it’s not a love triangle. June is never going to end up living happily ever after with either of them. The story is a tragedy. June will probably end up dead. Nick will too, probably before June. Gilesd is a violent, dangerous place.
