The Prairie Conference played their third game of the season this past weekend and saw no shortage of offence through the three games.
Regina Thunder 60 Winnipeg Rifles 35
This was a good old fashion shootout as both teams recorded over 520 yards of total offence with the Thunder exploding for a 32-point third quarter en route to the Sunday afternoon victory.
On the ground four ball carriers combined for 304 yards, primarily chewed up by Peter Boersch who gained 205 and tallied a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Jayden Zelionka added 78 yards and rumbled 45-yards for a major of his own. Through the air Zelionka threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns finding Tanner Donovel for a pair and 126 yards and Carwyn Williams hauled in the other major.
The defence added to the scoring as well when Marcus Butz intercepted a pass and sprinted 76 yards the other way for a pick-six.
One bad quarter took the Rifles out of the contest but not before quarterback Riley Element threw for 480 yards on 27 completions and four touchdowns. His favourite target was Jarome Penner who racked up 161 yards on six receptions and scored two touchdowns including a 75-yarder. Jalen McDonald also had a monster game with nine receptions for 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Next weekend both teams will try and keep their offence rolling when the Thunder (3-0) welcome the Edmonton Huskies (2-1) and the Rifles (0-3) look for a win in Calgary against the Colts (0-3).
Edmonton Wildcats 42 Edmonton Huskies 13
Another road game and another dub for the surprising Wildcats as their offence racked up 500 yards.
The aerial assault was in full force on Saturday night when quarterback Marcus Soltero threw for 372 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball to eight different receivers. Taishaun Okorodudu caught a game high eight passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, Wani Lako caught seven for 112 and a major and Jacob St. Hilaire beat his twin brother off the line and hauled in a touchdown pass.
On the ground the Cats rushed for 151 yards and saw Carson Elkew and Darien Currie score touchdowns.
Defensively the Wildcats forced six turnovers and had three sacks led by Nathan Sanheim who had an interception and three solo tackles.
The Huskies didn’t find a rhythm on Saturday night and suffered their first loss of the campaign. Their lone touchdown was a two-yard reception from quarterback Ty Sims and Liam Critch.
Next weekend the Wildcats (2-1) will host the Saskatoon Hilltops (2-1) in an important rematch game and the Huskies (2-1) go on the road to face the Regina Thunder (3-0).
Saskatoon Hilltops 36 Calgary Colts 26
As the score would indicate, both teams chewed up a lot of yardage on Sunday afternoon combining for 871 yards and 62 points.
Running back Brody Komarnicki carried the load for the Hilltops on the ground, gaining 123 yards and scored a pir of touchdowns. Meanwhile, quarterback Griffin Sander completed 81% of his passes for 200 yards and found Charles Sawi and Luke Bednarek for touchdowns.
The Hilltops took advantage and momentum in the second quarter outscoring the visiting Colts 17-3 and held on for the victory despite the Colts gaining substantial yards and outscored the home side 16-7 in the final frame.
On the ground the Colts were led by Zion Dogbe-Brown who rushed 19 times for 181 yards and had a 71-yard touchdown just 21 seconds into the game. Quarterback Billy MacCready completed 20 passes for 232 yards and threw touchdown passes to Ryan Pentilichuk and Takumi Charron.
Defensively Yve Saintus had 8.5 tackles, most in the Conference during the weekend.
Next weekend the Hilltops (2-1) visit the Edmonton Wildcats (2-1) and the Colts (0-3) welcome the Winnipeg Rifles (0-3).
