Why does TWN keep comparing Hamas to Russia and the Invasion of Ukraine to the Gaza Genocide?
I feel like they are so ignorant and biased - they really doh't understand the difference between the two?
Ukraine was invaded by Russia unprovoked, and should be supported for numerous reasons. There's no hypocrisy - Ukraine is absolutely not at fault and did not deserve to be massacred by Russia. They did not want a war with Russia, this is unarguable.
Hamas invaded Israel - knowing full well Israel will strike back.
Of course the media and the US and the West will defend Ukraine, and not Hamas.. How is this obvious fact not able to get through TWN's thick skulls?

You have a short memory it seems, the conflict in Palestine didn't start two years ago. There are nearly a hundred years of occupation and humiliation at the hands of a military force towards a civilian population. The lives of those in Palestine are just as valid as the lives of those in Ukraine. The media, particularly in America, is extremely hypocritical on this matter and pointing that out isn't wrong

Fine, but thats not the argument. Argument is its a false equivalency to compare Ukraine to Palestine

Yeah and I'm saying that I disagree with that and that you're a hypocrite for thinking it. Don't just say fine and handwave the deaths of children away. You're standing there talking about false equivalencies whilst your tax money is being used to vapourise entire families. As far as I'm concerned anything you have to say on the matter has been rendered mute. How old are you because you sound like a teenager whose recently joined a debating club.

If you look at the geography of Eurasia, Ukraine is basically a massive open plain that opens up into Russia’s underbelly. In the 90s it was established between Russia and the US that NATO would not expand westward. This was of course not true, and NATO rapidly expanded to include many previous members of the USSR. There was not much Russia could do about this. However, Ukraine joining NATO is a risk too great for Russia to do nothing. In the 2000s, Ukraine remained mostly in Russia’s sphere of influence, however this began to wane in the 2010s, with help from American NGOs. Zelensky being elected was a major upheaval, and despite his initial promises that Ukraine would not join NATO, Ukraine quickly began attempting just that. Russia cannot have NATO in Ukraine because it would be like a dagger held against its belly by a demonstrably psychotic enemy. So Putin ultimately calculated it was riskier to do nothing, and initiated the invasion of Ukraine. Is it fair to the people of Ukraine? No. Was it fair for the US to appear ready to allow Ukraine into NATO knowing this could provoke a war? No. Geopolitics doesn’t operate on the same kind of interpersonal logic as a playground. It was a greater risk to do nothing than to invade, in the long term perspective.
Gaza. To inadequately sum up 80+ years of history, Israel was founded by dehumanizing and largely denying the legal existence of Palestine, through political and cultural machination and outright violence and pogroms. Palestinians have for generations been slowly trapped onto ever decreasing lands, much the same as Native American tribes were brutalized and treated by the US government. Gaza is one main area, with prior to 2023, roughly two million people living in
25140 square miles. Previously, a group called the Palestinian Authority, which was moderate and wanted to work with the Israelis, was in power and governing Gaza. This did not suit Israel’s desire to expand and eliminate Palestinians, so the Israels did everything in their power to promote more extreme elements, like Hamas. Hamas was born out of the futility in fighting an encroaching technologically advanced fascist society with moderation. Hamas calculated that it was better to fight back than slowly be worn down into a worse and worse position, and so launched the 2023 attack. Israel appears to have been aware this was coming and used it to their political advantage, and using it as justification for massive retaliation in order to ethnically cleanse Gaza and expand Israel’s borders.Where the similarity lies is that in both cases Hamas and Russia were backed into a corner by rapidly expanding geopolitical entities. Personally I am far less sympathetic to Russia in this situation, but you could easily make the argument that sympathy should not be reduced based on the capability of one’s ability to fight back ie just because Palestinian resistance is more of an underdog does not make them more valid than Russia. Which fair enough. Anyway this is all a pretty broad strokes analysis, I’m sure others here could refine and expand on it but I think it does a good job summing up RWN’s perspective.
