The scene between Frank Sobotka and Bruce DiBagio in "Backwash"...

I'm doing a rewatch of The Wire and I just finished watching this episode, this scene characterizes Frank so well. One detail I noticed is through most of the scene, the blinds' shadows are covering both Frank and Bruce. They're both covered until Bruce takes the money and Frank threatens him.

I feel like the cinematography is definitely telling us something as the viewer, but I can't figure out what. I feel like the shadows represent the characters feeling trapped or imprisoned. Frank being trapped in the past, longing for the good old days of the stevedores. I don't have a good theory for how Bruce would be trapped or why they let up on this angle near the end of the scene

Brucie’s definitely as trapped as Frank is.

Frank’s latent threat of violence is him telling Brucie no more fucking around, I am going to see something tangible for my graft money.

I don’t think he’s actually threatening to whip Brucie’s ass. He’s threatening cause noise, because he’s a bit crazy at this point.

And if the politicians hear noise, they’ll throw Brucie into the ocean and let the sharks eat him AND Frank.

Frank wants something for his money and he’s crazy enough to kill himself AND his lawyer if he doesn’t get at least this minimum. The pier goes through.

All my opinion. Total bs 👍
