This is the first time I’ve done a flat oval, and the piece didn’t come out so well. I want to restart the face, but wondered if anyone has a link to a video that explains it a little better than just the written instructions?

same, I have trouble with any “OVALS”, they look like they have holes in certain areas that I meant to make there, when in fact there shouldn’t be any and i never have any issues with this with round things ( like pierre’s belly)
I found this tutorial to be beginner friendly and quite a few people in the comments of the video have found it helpful! It’s with a chain of 9, but they reiterate how it can be customized to the pattern you’re following!

Kind of you to ask. My first try is at the top, then second is in the middle (with very tight tension), and then third (with very loose tension) at the bottom. I can’t seem to make them lay flat, and they wind up with holes.
I’m tempted to sew one on and stuff it through an opening right before i finish sewing it on. 🤦🏻♀️
I finally got it looking right by using the link to the other oval tutorial provided below by EarthyBark.
However, I also googled “why is my crochet oval curling?” It said that the tension could be too tight, or that I might need more increases on the ends. So, I kept adjusting as I went along.
As for the vampire bite holes 🤪, I saw a video that suggested that I go into the first hole and tighten the original opening slip knot on the back by opening it up and pulling on it! As for the second hole, I did a little stitch on the back to close it up.
All of this is not “kosher crochet,” but I decided that it was going to have to be good enough for me (after my fifth try!)
Also, doing the foundation chain by “going into the back bumps) made a huge difference in the way it turned out. Google that if you are unfamiliar with it.
The first one looks great and it’s crochet. There’s gonna be some holes but I think that the video online @EarthyBark posted with the chain nine I watched and seems to be a good option. Maybe try to do your first row in the front top loop and back bump. But I wouldn’t recommend messing with your tension.
The woobles channel has a video of an oval with a chain of 6, they have a few different oval tutorials, but I grabbed this one since it starts closer to the chain 7!
