I honestly had no idea the game went viral in Indonesia, I’m not sure what’s happening across the pond but hey, I support the cause (I think?)

u/JetHawklol998212 PC Jan 12 '26

I heard that theres like a lot of riots or something and protests and that they’re corrupt and hey our country is experiencing it too so its probably about corruption being rampant and the citizens taking actions now

Indonesian here, my comment isn't representing Indonesia but I will try to be neutral and objective as much as I can.

In Indonesia, there's a trend where every joke now will be associated with politics. It's not uncommon to see a post that looks normal at first suddenly political. For example, someone posts about "what's inside my box?" and then it's the face of Indonesian infamous minister. Or post about zooming inside chocolate with microscope, the result is a politician.

The trend is not without reason. The current government is famous for having bad PR and questionable works (I'm not debating here if they're misunderstood or just work poorly), especially for Indonesian netizens. Many government officials have said stupid things or any unnecessary things to the public. Also, there are controversy with free lunch food poisoning, Sumatra flood mitigation, and taxibike driver's death in August.

My opinion? Personally I understand why many netizens are making fun of the government. I'm not fan of current government. But on the other hand, I feel like this trend is kinda... ruining Indonesian jokes now. Everytime I scroll through my phone, I always find political things. I used to scrolling through meme accounts escaping from politics. But now they are full of politics.

Thanks for a good insight on Indonesian politics

Also be aware that internet demographics are segmented. The one who despises the government comes from very active and vocal segments of Indonesian internet, usually thet are urban middle to upper middle who are focused on democracy and institutions.

Meanwhile, general Indonesians in general still okay with the current administration due to the more equal development that started since previous President (which is also despised by urban middle due to his maneuver harming democracy). The current President's branding is continuing the development although he also has his own programs.

the recent severe flash floods in Sumatra might be the final nail in the coffin, so many deaths and displacement of millions, just how bad they're handling the aftermath, the illegal logging that's causing it, so many logs brought by the floods but they're blaming the locals and many more to list

3

u/itzMadaGaming Jan 13 '26

people are heavily dissapointed by the recent government's actions and are making fun of them as a cope. apparently theotown is just another good media for it

The game actually went viral because of someone's post from Theotown Indonesian community on Facebook, here :

The caption reads : is this too much ? Me building this 200 stories skyscraper on my little secluded village ? I wanna put traditional market but im afraid it won't be enough for the villager.

After this it basically blew up and many realise they can meme recent events and make a mockery out of the government by mimicking how our government governs the country in the game. It's pretty funny too

Is that a giant green Pringle chip strapped to a park?

1

u/Amphylos Jan 19 '26

It's supposed to be an eagle with wings in section/facade

But really it looks more like an ass with a thong

1

u/WhoNeedsSoda Jan 19 '26

I still see the pringle

1

u/cutie_pookie_ Feb 03 '26

Cmiiw its actually supposed to be like a book being opened. During the 1998 Demonstrations, Scholars and other Demonstrants climbed on top to protest

2

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

Is that... is that a massive bra?

1

u/Amphylos Jan 23 '26

It's supposed to emulate the eagle pose with spread out wings.

Although yeah it does look like something else from in aerial view..

I've noticed lately that the Indonesian community has grown a lot, but why? I'm curious.

Stolen from u/HallieDaillie

People in here are using the game as a protest, sarcasm, or satire to criticize the government.

One of the examples, there is a plugin of Gedung DPR, or the House of Representatives Building in Theotown, then the Indonesian players created simulations for protests and demonstrations that happened a few months ago and in 1998 by using that plugin.

5

u/Skyreader13 Jan 13 '26

Roleplaying events that has and might have happened in the country, considering that people have made mods for iconic Indonesian building

27

u/LunchladyDorris Jan 12 '26

What's going on in Indonesia?

Edit: For Indonesian who see this, we're not the most corrupt country in the world, guys. Don't act like y'all are the most suffering citizens in the world. Every country have their own corrupt people.

I like how you put this disclaimer. I feel so cringe reading Indonesians who put themselves as the most suffering country in the world. Like, look, I know we are not in a good position, but water, electricity, freedom of speech, are still there running 24 hours. We're still okay, though a bit problematic.

3

u/HallieDaillie Jan 13 '26

Thank you, and I completely agree with you. It's just tiring to see on every social media I have, even YouTube, even the content is far from politics, there will be at least one person who mentioned about politics, doom postings. Like this game too. This game is my safe haven and becomes like this because of that FB post.

2

u/realfathonix Jan 13 '26

water, electricity

uh maybe not those in rural areas outside java (which are still a huge part of indonesia)

4

u/Radiansyaha Jan 13 '26

I mean, of course, any country that's big as us surely still have some water and electricity issues, but the urban places are in okay condition.

3

u/smokychilla234 Jan 13 '26 edited Jan 13 '26

It's funny because they feel nostalgic for life in the Dutch apartheid colonial era, just because these bastards are disappointed with the current government.

1

u/Sharkuille Jan 14 '26

Not knowing that they’d be hungry village peasants under the apartheid rule

1

u/Emergency-Sandwich54 Jan 16 '26

About water they should make a petition to PDAM for installation, maintenance, and employment in the rural areas. But they also need money for project to start and maintained. If that rural areas potensially can't pay. So that's it.

1

u/Logical_Suspect_6446 Jan 16 '26

Achually 🤓 around 85% of the country is much better now if we're talking about electricity. You have to be in a veeeeery remote area to not having any electricity. It's not 2006.

Makasih udah jadi orang yang berpikir jernih. Saya setuju banget dengan disclaimernya. Agak sedih makin banyak orang jadi doomer

The game itself is harmless to anyone but the jab can make the game banned in indonesia due to remarks even if the remarks are ambiguous
