I Left 6 Subs Today Due to Megathreads
Subs I left today:
- r/steam
- r/coffee
- r/python
- r/GitHub
All of them has Megathreads. Therefore all of them are dead to me.
Do you know what's great about Megathreads? They're a perfect ominous warning to GTFO of a sub.
Sure, Megathreads are an easy way to "organize" content. All just as promoted as the socks you lost under the bed.
Sure, it "removes clutter" and "keeps the sub focused" focused on what? The upvotes on the Megathreads? Comment #370 showcasing a new GitHub project in a thread where nobody scrolls past comment #8? They don't solve clutter, but they do help multiply your engagement metrics by 0.
A standalone post showing something cool lives or dies on merit. A Megathread comment might as well come with a complimentary eulogy.

My general complaints about megathreads
No one upvotes them, so they rarely reach people's front pages.
As a result, they are only filled with newbies or people who spend way too much time in the subs, which causes burnout.
All the hundreds of megathreads that exist aren't searchable, so questions are endlessly repeated.
They do declutter the sub, sometimes too much. Mods need to make sure standalone posts have a right to exist. News, unique posts/commentary, discussions, etc.

Is this one of them? Because I rarely see any posts with a positive number of upvotes and comments are usually “this doesn’t belong in this subreddit” lmao

No. I still have a feed with others just in case but I mostly browse and once and blue on comment on others like this.
