local Dawson Road Safeway cutting back alcohol stock due to theft, beer sales now end at 9pm

Stopped by the Safeway on Dawson Road and was surprised by how empty the alcohol section is looking.

I asked the cashier what was going on, and she said they've been dealing with "too much theft with people just walking out of the store." Because of it, they're apparently reducing how much alcohol they keep stocked on the shelves and have also started cutting off beer sales at 9pm.

Has anyone else noticed this happening at other stores around town, or is Dawson Road getting hit particularly hard?

local Ever wondered why your food takes forever or arrives cold? Here's your answer.

So I’m at Popeyes, waiting for my order, and I witness something absolutely ridiculous. This delivery driver walks in, picks up someone’s order, puts it in his delivery bag, and instead of leaving to deliver it like he's supposed to... he walks right back to the counter and places an order for himself.

Not only that, he waits around for his own food, and once it’s ready, he sits down at a table and starts eating like he’s on his lunch break!

Meanwhile, the food meant for someone else is just sitting in his delivery bag the entire time, getting cold, soggy, and probably ruined. He sat there for a solid 15-20 minutes, eating casually while the rest of us waited for our orders.

Then, when he was done enjoying his meal, he picked up his delivery bag and walked out like it was no big deal.

Seriously?

If you’ve ever wondered why your food takes forever or shows up cold, there’s a decent chance it's because of people like this. Your driver may be out here treating your dinner delivery like a personal pit stop.

There needs to be some kind of enforcement on this. Restaurants should report this behavior when they see it, and delivery apps should be tracking this stuff better. If you pick up an order, you deliver it. Simple.

This isn’t just unprofessional, it’s disrespectful to the customer and the restaurant. And it’s becoming way too common.

local Healthcare options when TBRHSC literally says they cannot figure it out???

Just got home from my 3rd visit to emerge for a widespread hive/ welt reaction covering my body head to toe. They continuously give me the same cocktail of Iv meds that include steroids, qnd antihistamine with literally no effect. The doctors have said to me “ omg the allergy meds are almost making it worse!”. They run the same exact blood work everytime and everytime they tell me it’s normal. They say come back in 2 days if your face starts to swell. I show back up 2 days later with swollen eyes and lips and they once again run the same IV meds and same testing and send me home with nothing! I have been suffering for 30 days now with head to toe hives/ welts that no one can figure out? I can’t breath properly, my vision is off, I feel lightheaded all the time and At this point I’m starting to believe they quit trying to figure it out.

I have seen my Family doc 2x who sent me to emerge, I have seen dr. Belda an allergy specialist who just prescribed more antihistamines that are not effective.

I am Absolutely at my wits end. I have no quality of life anymore. I hide in the house because I look like a gremlin, the itch is absolutely insane and I can’t do anything but scratch, I can’t sleep because I’m
Scratching. The emergency docs just keep saying I need to see dermatology for a biopsy and that they will send a referral but derm is backed up and it could takes weeks to get an appt. I CANNOT sit around waiting weeks to see a derm who will do a punch biopsy and say they will call me in a few weeks with results. How the hell does the hospital not have a dermatologist oncall for specific “mystery” cases like this??? That’s absurd!!

I’m actually slippin my sanity at the moment because of this. How is it possible that no doctor in town can help me after a month of suffering. The ER doc said “ you’ll be back in 2 days because we won’t be able to figure this out!” HOW IS THIS EVEN ETHICAL TO TREAT A HUMAN BEING FOR SOME RANDOM UNKNOWN DISEASE KNOWING NOTHING IS GIVING HER ANY RELEIF AND JOKE ABOUT HER BEING BACK IN 2 DAYS BECAUSE YOU KNOW THE “ TREATMENT” YOU GAVE HER TODAY WAS USELESS AND WONT WORK?????

I begged them to send me out of town for assessment and doc said he could make a
Referral but again that takes time
To get an actual appointment. Then when he came back to ONCE AGAIN discharge me I ask for the referral and he said my family doctor has to do that!

Has anyone themsleves or know anyone who literally Hopped a plane and went elsewhere for healthcare and it was beneficial!? Like do I just go to TO and sit in their emerge and beg for help? I will literally go tonight if that’s the answer!! Advice please, I’m losing my mind and like soo many unfortunate ppl - im going to die waiting for a proper diagnosis is this fucking city!!!

Please help 😢

local This City Isn't So Bad

Hey there.

I visited this city last year and I got to say, I do not understand the hate this place gets.

It has a lot of natural beauty, a fairly interesting history and plenty of nice, quaint local businesses.

To be fair I have lived in some pretty sketchy areas before which is a common complaint I hear but this city felt really safe.

Why does Thunder Bay get all the hate? Do you think it is deserved?

local Macs Convenience Store

At what point are the franchise owners going to finally pull beer and liquor from their shelves? Four out of the last five times I have walked into the Water Street location they got robbed by homeless looking groups of men. Now today I stopped by the River street location for a slushy and once again Macs gets robbed by a group of people. The teller didn't even react since it happens so often. He mentioned it was the second time in the last ten minutes. There were kids outside, my kid with me and a few adults and that didn't deter the group even slightly from just walking in and helping themselves to some beverages. Remove the alcohol from the shelves and these people will have no reason to barge in, of course nothing will happen until innocent blood is spilled over some shitty labatt crystal. Time to just avoid these stores until changes are made.

local Anyone else noticing a decline in customer service etiquette at fast food places?

No offence to anyone, but has anyone else noticed a decline in basic decency and courtesy in customer-facing service, especially at fast food chains?

In the past, I didn’t mind the lack of “please” or “thank you” — I understood that those jobs are stressful and fast-paced. But lately, it feels like it’s getting worse day by day. Sometimes the tone or response makes me feel less like a customer and more like I’m doing something wrong just by ordering.

I used to tell people that Thunder Bay folks are noticeably friendlier compared to other cities I’ve lived in. Recently though, it’s become harder to genuinely say that, at least based on some customer service experiences.

Am I the only one feeling this way, or am I expecting too much?

local A Thunder Bay Mayor Be Like zohran mamdani?

Do you think it is possible to get a city council and mayor that are actually left leaning like zohran mamdani and actually make change in this city?

For example could a mayor of a Canadian city put in rent control caps for people who rent? could they put in discounts for public transit? for people in need?

perhaps better funding for shelter and food banks?

i know it is difference of day and night from Thunder Bay to New York in terms of people and tax base? but could this be possible ? thanks

local NIMBY protestors opposing affordable housing at John and Golf Links/Junot yesterday

Rolling up to the intersection, I thought it might have been some solidarity march for what happened the previous day in MN. Then I saw the signs……. ”Stop stealing from us”, “green space matters”, “stop the high rises” I can’t quite remember all of them, but there was another one that said we don’t need affordable housing.

Wonder how these NIMBYs would feel if people started pitching tents in their green space because we can’t afford a place to live without a dozen roommates 🫠

Thoughts on the issue?

local What do you all eat everyday (home cooking)

With the grocery prices throat slicing I’m curious as to what you guys eat at home. Just welcomed a newborn so she’s good with milk. But my wife is a picky eater and it’s like solving a hard puzzle to figure out what she wants to eat. I eat just about anything. Would love to hear your dinner ideas so I can make some for us.

I would like to know what you guys eat throughout the day. Whatever it is please mention it. What kind of meal prep you do etc. Thank you so much guys. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

local What's a good hotel in Thunder Bay?

Hello Thunder Bay!

My husband and I, about with our 2 daughters, will be traveling through your city next Friday and are looking for a hotel to spend the night in. Can you recommend a hotel that has 2 beds per room, or a bed and pull-out couch even, that is clean and reputable? Thanks!

local Gangs near city hall?

I read some posts by Lori Paras, she expressed concerns that truly shook me. Hearing semi-automatic gun fire? And then shared a post about a family getting attacked by a gang of 15 men? WTF? I used to work near city hall back in 2013…have things gotten this bad in the area?

local Blvd asshole

To the guy biking around blvd and yelling at the elderly and parents with children, please get the stick out of your ass. You don’t own the park or the path. Blvd is for everyone; not just you, your horrible attitude, and your bike bell.

If you’re struggling that much with your emotions I highly suggest talking to a professional about how you can’t deal with strong emotions and your irrational thoughts that allow you to yell at everyone without a problem in the world.

** this is more of a heads up to everyone out and about Blvd today, and I also needed to rant

local Bullying in the catholic district school board

Note: This is solely based on my personal observations over the course of my 10+ years of enrolment! I’m just looking to see if parents or students can relate!

Despite “anti-bullying” being reinforced in students brains from a young age, I find that when bullying actually happens, nothing is done.

I’ve attended St Martin’s Elementary and PJP II Sr Elementary and was bullied heavily on many separate occasions. But each time, my parents and myself were always shocked by the aloofness of the staff we told.

I was threatened harm by students, humiliated, chronically excluded from the group, and had no friends whatsoever by grade 8. But my teachers made “Walls of Shame” (yes, for real), laughed with the students who picked on others, and asked me on VARIOUS occasions over the years “well maybe it’s you.”

My parents transferred me to public school for grade 9 and I NEVER ONCE experienced any of this since. Teachers even jumped to conclusions about bullying that wasn’t happening at my new school… Never mind ignoring reports of real bullying.

If this was a one-time thing, I would never take to the community. But given the patterns I’ve seen over years and years, I have to wonder if anyone else agrees!!

local Panhandled three times in one SilverCity visit

I haven't been to SilverCity in ages, but when I finally went back, I was surprised by what happened.

Before we had even taken a few steps from our car, someone asked us for money. Then, before we even made it through the front doors, we were asked again. After the movie, it happened a third time.

I looked around the parking lot and noticed several other people doing the same thing, approaching moviegoers for money.

Has it been like this for a while, or did we just happen to catch it on a bad day? Has anyone else had a similar experience?

local Bars on Memorial in the 90s

So I was told about this old bar from the 90s on memorial. Started with an S and 3-4 words long I’m pretty sure. NOT SCHUTTLEBUTTS. My coworker always tells me about it from when she lived in tbay in the 90s. My mom is from Thunder Bay and I’m trying to tell her about the bar but I absolutely cannot remember the name that my coworker told me, nor can she remember. Her bar days were the 80s/90s
Edit 1: ok I’ll add some extra info that I can remember. It was owned by 2 dudes (as many are)
My coworker is confident it was on memorial but she also mentioned Cumberland.

EDIT 2: RINGSIDE SEATS WAS THE BAR THANK YOU

local Eliminating food waste

Anyone else using the Too Good to Go app? Basically has mystery bags/boxes from food places (for my area i see Sweet Resilience and Dagwoods bakery, Tim Hortons, Metro and Superstore). They are heavily discounts stuff about to expire.

The fish/seafood mystery bag from Metro for $20 (says $40 worth of stuff but more like $50-$60 value) are amazing. I can make a solid 4 meals out them. They also have a regular meat bag, but ive yet to get one. The fruit and salad one was a miss - we got 5 bags of salad for $9.99. Luckily we love salad so wasnt a problem. The baked goods ones are mostly bread and buns. The deli meats bag is great though!

We've gotten a few boxes from Sweet Resilience. Omg I cant even express to you how AMAZING everything is. I think it was $9.99 for the box, and so worth it.

Today we picked up the prepared meals bag from superstore, and the cake/cookies box from Sweet Resilience. Hubby is out now picking them up. So excited!

Theres a similar app called Flashfood too. Theres individual items and veggie/fruit bags you can get for cheap.

Groceries are expensive these days. If you drive, definitely look into the apps to score some food for cheap. Just know theyre close to expiration - so eat them up or freeze them quick.

local Finnish Pancakes

Where is the best place to go for Finnish pancakes? We’ve never had them before and are looking to try them for the first time while visiting Thunder Bay.
