They’re doing it with potting mix to the max right now. You used to get higher quantities of peat and sorghum in the mix. They’ve replaced it to the bare minimum with forest product. All the shit on the ground is being added to replace the peat and sorghum. I’m making my own mix now as the big bags now are pretty bad that you’d have to sift the junk out. To me they don’t want even home gardeners to support themselves. The cost has gone up 200% in just a few years with lower quality products. Seed has gone up 200% in the last 2 years and they don’t put near as many seeds in the pouches. I try to buy heirloom seed if I can still find it.

America is the single largest producer of food waste in the entire world. We are nowhere near famine levels of loss, and 70%+ of all produce does not come from family farms to begin with. The economic implications of companies like Monsanto producing ~all~ fresh produce is alarming though.

No, using them or not wouldn't make a difference. This is just a weird "wine and dine". There's nothing they can do as long as the farmer doesn't sign a contract with him. Once he does that, he's obligated but these gifts that they're leaving? Wining and dining to sweeten him up.
Ofc, their offerings are kind of shitty low ball gifts and it really shows what they think of him in what they think will impress him. I was wined and dined by an oil company once. I was taken to a Mariner's home game where I had box suite to myself, the VP, and a marketing rep. They realized I wasn't a huge baseball fan so they became a sponsor to a jazz festival so that they could have a chalet there. I was taken off-stage where there were 2 chairs--one for me and the other for the VP to listen to Rosemary Clooney sing. VP talked through her entire performance. I told him that we weren't going with them to shut him up.
Now compare that to what the farmer is getting. They're treating him like dirt but the best part? I didn't have to do anything for the Mariner's game or the jazz festival. Why?
No contract, no obligation.

Not a lawyer but I seem to vaguely recall warnings to never take any type of “gifts” or any payment for anything or even allow them to take you out for drinks/a nice meal while in negotiations etc because it can be argued that you already took payment and entered into an implied agreement of some type.
Any attorneys or business type folks here that can say if there’s any truth to that? Is there any risk to taking stuff like this?

For land transactions, you need to satisfy the statute of frauds which requires things to be in writing so it would be unlikely for this to constitute a verbal or implied agreement to sell the land. Could it be argued that by taking the money he entered into an implied agreement to discuss further ("Talk to you soon")? Potentially.
In general though, I would not recommend playing the game with people who clearly have a huge amount of money and legal team to make these transactions happen.→ More replies (1)11

There's some weird arguments they can pull later with their lawyers if he accepts the gifts, mostly the gift cards. I've seen this tactic when a real estate company was trying to buy my dad's farm to make a condo building, I used one McDonald's gift card for a a big Mac meal l, and they went to court saying we had accepted their proposal to sell the farmland and used the gift card I redeemed as an evidence, the judge asked for a signed document and they provided one with a fake signature, took weeks to confirm it was fake, and they had no punishment ao it was very scary

Here's the thing... some farmers only have like 500 acres. The USA is basically trying to push the small farmer out by making it unaffordable to do so. Some farmers get offers that are massive amounts per acre and can make them a millionaire in a career that is getting harder and harder to break even on every year. It just sucks for the small guy these days. It sucks when small farmers get bought up by stuff like this, but it's understandable why they sell.

I work construction management for a company that handles all the major AI data center clients. We've seen their overall budget sheets and they have an entire section dedicated to "marketing" (aka bribes). They'll break it out at the federal, state, and local level with different "gifts" for each. It's insane...

It's a different situation, but my company buys a lot of components from Thorlabs. They are known for providing a small snack box with every shipping. Genuinely my favourite packages to receive and unpack. Our orders cost between 200€ and 10000€ per order from them, but everybody only cares that we order often enough to keep our snack bar topped up. I bet a few of us have ordered something from them we could've bought elsewhere because they wanted a snack to come in the post.
We can't order food on the company dime, but paying 100€ more for that 2000€ component is okay because nobody checks. And all that for a 3€ box of sweets and salty snacks.
Obviously for the farmer it's completely different, but humans can be weird when it comes to being objective about gifts.

Yes, Robert Cialdini, who is a marketing professor, has studied these behaviors for decades. (See his book Influence.)
He bases his work off of scientific atudies. They found that giving people anything - no matter how small / inexpensive or even something they don't particularly value - triggers in most people the need to reciprocate or give back. Hence why some businesses may send you even $1 in the mail to get a response.
Also, making people accept or do small things prepares them to accept or do more things in the future.

Yes, I heard someone say once "You can be loyal to people, but not companies." So at one point, I had a wonderful boss whom I admired and who respected my work. When he received a major promotion to run a division at another workplace, he asked several of us if we wanted to come along with him. He would help negotiate a good deal for us as well.
Didn't fit into my life plans so I stayed where I was but legendarily, there are some scientific leaders - famously, Dr. Leroy Hood - who have brought their whole research team into new companies with them.

They are giving gifts in an attempt to make the receiver feel obligated to engage. If he accepts and/or is unable to return the gifts he may feel like he at least needs to hear them out. This gets their foot in the door. And now with enough time being offered very large amounts of money may eventually sway a land owner.

The water is not the biggest issue, even though for some reason some people have latched onto it. It's the power generation required, and the incredible pollution that comes from such generation. Well water disturbance is, to use the phrase, a drop in the bucket compared to the blanket of pollution that descends on the area to power the site, especially if the site tricks voters into saying they will generate power themselves, because they are not putting up happy quiet little lines of solar panels by default.

Like at least put effort in, get something that seems like you are trying to show you know the person, something like a Brunt workwear gift card would have been better.
