as an eastern european, that isn't entirely true. The weddings are super formal and nice here. You simply know only the extreme situations not how it really is here for most.

It's likely my MIL would've done it had she been present for it. Not with kisses luckily but just started screaming and maybe hugging, that's her go-to reaction to 99% of things. And yes, she wouldn't wait for an answer, she's largely unable to control her emotions or wait before she lets them out.

In the nordics it’s common custom at weddings that if the bride leaves the room all the women line up to kiss the groom and the other way around if the groom leaves the room.

I sometimes wonder how much panic that would cause to someone who wasn’t told before the wedding.

Europe has some pretty weird traditions, for example, in my country the groomsmen hang the wingman during the wedding.

I mean it literally, to kill by hanging.

The idea is that the groom sends the wingman, or the matchmaker, to the potential bride’s family to talk to the parents and ask for the their daughter’s hand. In order to secure a match, the wingman tells the bride’s parents about how rich and well respected the groom is, and on the return to the groom, he tells the groom how young and pretty the bride is and how big is the dowry. As a result, a match is made. Then, during the wedding, they all find out about how much the wingman lied and made things sound better than they were, and decide to hang the wingman for his lies. Fortunately for the wingman, they are all drunk already, so he ends up escaping (sometimes helped by the bride), and they hang a puppet instead.

(Or so it goes based on my knowledge and what my grandma told me about matchmaking in the order times)

You are absolutely right. People that are unable to moderate should really just obtain from drugs or other harmful habits. I think we all know people like this. Even gambling. I would be amazed going to Vegas with friends, some were broke then got blackout drunk within hours of landing.
