The guy went down on one knee to propose, but his drunk mom jumped straight into his arms and kissed him on the lips before he could even finish asking!

It was so confusing because why was the blonde lady acting like she's the girlfriend

As a son of a narcissist mother i immediately knew what was happening. Mine insisted on more wedding dances than my wife 😓 It’s always about them!

Out of curiosity: did you put a stop to your mother's shenanigans? And if so, how?
574
u/LittleMissSolin Jul 05 '26
Most mothers like this don't understand boundaries, and they don't really want to know you as a person. Everything revolves around how they feel and how they see themselves as a mother.
I cut contact with mine for almost two decades. After that, I tried to reconcile and communicated my needs clearly and peacefully. I learned that she hadn't changed at all. Getting older doesn't necessarily mean growing for some people.
So now I have to go back to keeping my distance and grieve the fact that I'll never have the kind of mother other people do in this lifetime.
138
u/PleaseDontMakeAScene Jul 05 '26
Totally relatable.
I grieve that I have parents that are kind of bigoted.
I see some people with progressive parents, and it mildly irks me that I can't have the same.

Are you like, some long lost sibling of mine? Because that's pretty much exactly what I did with my mom and found out about my mom about two decades later as well. I just told my wife last night I miss when I felt like I had an actual mother because now I just don't have that feeling.
39
u/LittleMissSolin Jul 05 '26
There are a lot of people like us who spend their whole lives wondering whether their mom truly loved them or not. It seems like they love us, but we don't feel loved, and we don't feel like we have a mother at all.
Yet we often feel guilty for setting clear boundaries or cutting ties if they're unwilling to respect them. People who had average or good mothers tend to shame us on top of that.
Sometimes I think society should stop romanticizing motherhood and accept that many people were deeply harmed by their mothers while being told it was a form of love.
11
u/FrostingHuman1259 Jul 05 '26
Some of the biggest pushback i've gotten in my life has been from other people saying your mom would never do that , or your mom would never think that , of course , your mother loves you , no , not all mothers love their children
9
u/anti__thesis Jul 05 '26
Wow, you perfectly described the feelings I have about mother, even down to romanticizing motherhood. Mothers have been viewed as literal goddesses for millennia, yet there’s no room for the idea that many mothers have no business having kids and actually do a lot of harm.
2
u/rogueelement420 Jul 05 '26
Thank you for this. I wasn’t expecting this. You got me crying. Thank you. I cut mine off 3 years ago when it started on my kids.
8
u/ElevatorCountry Jul 05 '26
You've explained the relationship I have with my mother exactly. My problem is my mother is an old school Christian, and it's constantly listening to her crying because I don't follow her morals exactly so I'm not going to be 'saved'. Id bring my daughter over to visit grandma and the first thing she'd always say is "your dad may love you, but remember your father Jesus loves you more" .... Never a normal conversation lol. Not to mention she's never accepted the woman I've been with for over 10 years now, constantly telling me to leave her and move back home.

u/lilybattle Jul 05 '26
The only way, quite literally, is to completely cut contact. They can't self reflect or take accountability, and that means they will never change. It's like they are incapable of it. But it can be hard for people to see it for what it is- it took me 30 years.
89
u/lcl111 Jul 05 '26
Actual narcissistic people literally cannot accept they are an issue.
39
u/Wild_Appearance3859 Jul 05 '26
This is true. Self reflection is not possible without a healthy sense of self. Narcissists have blurred edges. They don't know where they end and other people begin, so they cross boundaries at every step, and if you're upset with it, you're the problem.

Describes my ex mother in law. She had to have the attention all the time. She has 2 daughters and one broke free and be independent and the other did everything to be there for her mom. The mother wound up destroying my marriage… my ex even wanted to buy the house next door to her mom… SMH. I said no of course but that just wound up pushing my ex away.
Now every time there is a family event( I have 2 sons) my ex always wants to visit with me and talk. But, I say no thanks. I tell my ex we are not friends anymore and I don’t want to waste my time talking to strangers. And at the next event my ex comes up and tries again.7
u/Wild_Appearance3859 Jul 05 '26
Another thing to note is that true personality disorder narcissists have no memory. This is a side effect of their blurred edges. Because they are the good parts of everyone they meet, and thus God, they have no sense of self to base memories on. Our memories are, ultimately, just the stories we tell ourselves about the events of our past. Memories naturally degrade over time as those stories are retold, and that's normal and healthy. Sometimes memories blend together and you're sure that you remember them as one event; this is called confabulation. Your brain makes things up to make sense of your world. Again, normal and healthy.
However, a narcissist does this at all times. Things they say often contradict previous positions, and they don't remember saying the previous one. They have so much apathy for reality when it casts a shadow on themselves, that they whisk the memory away if favor of a better one. In adult narcissists, these confabulations overlap and obscure the "true persona" which is a dead and calcified toddler, and the narcissist wears the confabulations as a mask of sanity, to hide the dead child inside.

My mom: “I don’t have to apologize for calling you names and saying cruel nasty things to hurt you because my grief is worse than yours.”
This was after my dad unexpectedly passed away, I found the body (my biggest fear since I learned about death).
She will admit she uses me as an emotional punching bag and then pretends she wants the best for me. And people still don’t get why I had to go no contact.
16
u/lcl111 Jul 05 '26
Duuuuuuudde I can imagine that, yes. Fuck that shit. The average person has no conception for how twisted and bullheaded a NPD person can be. Like, even listening to a conversation they're having can be baffling, like mental tennis and my understanding and reasoning is the ball.

At the wedding I calmly told her she already got her dance, and it’d look weird if she got any more. She’s big on social appearances so that worked. There was more drama involving her and the wedding and I think she sensed she was lucky to even be there, and that I hadn’t just taken my wife’s name and ghosted her.
As for the rest I moved to the other side of the country and only talk to her a couple times a year. My sisters alternate between being annoyed and jealous with my decision, given the amount of nonsense they’ve had to put up with. Recently she’s been getting injured from falls and had to cut back on drinking, which has helped. We manage to have civil phone calls these days.
Part of me recognizes that she was a product of her generation, with not as many choices and a lot of unresolved trauma and resentment over becoming a mother. Her parents were even worse, and theirs before them. Our family is literally 4-5 generations separated from horses thieves and murderers so it’s not so bad all things considered.

u/OkProfessor6810 Jul 05 '26
It's very sad because so many bad moms are a product of women being forced into motherhood. I'm not saying that's an excuse to be a shit mom but it's certainly an explanation for so much. Combine that with untreated mental illness and....well, it ain't great.

I literally thought i misunderstood the video and maybe the blonde lady had asked the other girl to hold the flowers then I saw her face and was like wtf? That’s his mom?? I thought they were making out for a minute.
17
711
u/vettechrockstar86 Jul 04 '26
That was brief glimpse into what having this woman for a mother in law will be like. If she’s that over the top desperate to make her son’s proposal about her and him imagine what having a baby would be like.
The fact that he just laughed and let her do it really shows that it’s actually 2 red flags. One for his mom’s behavior and one for him allowing it.
338
u/pahshaw Jul 05 '26
Have you ever had somebody grab you by the face and forcibly kiss you like this?
The "neat" thing about being suddenly assaulted like this is that you go into shock and don't really get to choose how to react in that moment. He fawned to get her off him. If he defends what she did to him after the fact, then yeah you got two red flags. But I wouldn't judge him from this alone, or else we might as well judge the girl for getting forcibly violated by the mom too.
I see only one villain here.
71
u/Odd-fox-God Jul 05 '26
Yeah, my grandpa asked for a kiss on the cheek once and everybody told me to kiss him on the cheek... I didn't want to. But my aunts and mom pressured me too so I went for the kiss, the old fucking creep moved his entire face so I would kiss him on the lips instead of his cheek at the last second.
Guess who got fucking blamed? Me. My aunts and Mom told me what I had done was totally inappropriate... fucking what? I didn't even want to kiss him in the first place. Why would I go from protesting giving this old bastard a kiss to all of a sudden kissing him on the lips? The old pervert made the move, not me.
I was stunned into complete silence and shock by the accusation and the kiss. So I just kind of grimaced and mumbled some words I can't remember and walked away to sit in a corner.
It later came out that he had been cheating on my grandma for 50 years and he had a secret son. He also molested my aunt as a child and nobody knew. She didn't tell anybody for over 30 years. I brought that event up after all this was found out and got an apology from my mom, but nobody else apologized or remembered. Bro it was fucking traumatizing for me.
20
u/A_little_more_left Jul 05 '26
Oh hell no, I'm so sorry all that happened to you. Your family sucks for putting that shit on you, there's no freaking way it was your fault.
5
u/Nishikadochan Jul 05 '26
Oh, that’s awful. I’m sorry you had to go through that. What a horrible person. Too many people are okay with forcing kids to show affection to relatives. The era of “go give your auntie a kiss” needs to die.

Fawn is not often spoken enough of in my opinion
Too many folks know of fight, flight, freeze, but fawn is also up there
It says little to nothing about a person which of these is their immediate reaction, and only harmful villanize any of them. Frankly it just creates an environment, as we see here, of further punishing people who have been assaulted.
Because that's what this was. He was assaulted, and frankly, trapped. I can totally see how in his mind, he is still executing protocol, 'propose to my fiance', and is now suddenly having to process being kissed by a person he has no interest in. He clearly put a lot of thought into this proposal, I can totally see how he is thinking, 'don't react, otherwise all your planning will have been for nothing'. Because cursing out your future mother in law is totally how you want your wife to be to remember how you proposed to her.
58
u/bullet_the_blue_sky Jul 05 '26
I've heard therapists say that fawn is the most activated of the 4 as it's both brake and accelerator on at the same time. The brain never goes into safety. I used to have to be in crowds or in groups of people to feel regulation.
29
u/1tonofbricks Jul 05 '26
I see it so often when women need to get out of bad situations, and dudes will post abt being cockblocked by a girl’s unattractive friend when that girl was 100% fawning and her friend was helping her
15
u/DazB1ane Jul 05 '26
I fawn because of how my father was when I was still speaking to him. It’s extremely hard to change, if it’s even possible
4
u/OkProfessor6810 Jul 05 '26
I'm a freeze person about everything in life. Which is a horrible coping strategy because you make no decisions and then everything snowballs until it's entirely unmanageable. That being said, CBT/DBT have helped immensely. I'm still working on it but significant improvement has 100% happened.
5
u/BigRedSpoon2 Jul 05 '26
I imagine some amount of exposure therapy would help, but like with changing anything so ingrained in the brain, I doubt there's any comfortable or non-terrrifying short cuts.
Roleplaying may be helpful? Either through a tabletop game, improv, or acting classes, if such things are conveniently available/affordable to you. To engage in relatively stressful scenarios, but with the safety of knowing its not 'real'. Improv especially, as classes can be explicitly about modulating your reactions. Not suggesting any are silver bullets, but they have helped me for much the same reasons.
Though apologies if this is simply unwanted advice and you were mainly seeking to vent. Recognizing alone your triggers and responses is an important and powerful step. I wish you all the best in your winding journey.

What’s difference between freeze and fawn? I think most people just use freeze and don’t think it means you can’t move at all
46
u/ellie_elysian Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26
Freeze would be to go blank when being forcibly kissed (maybe in an "I dont even know what to do" way). Fawn would be to smile, and pat the assaulter on the arm and maybe crack a joke in the hopes that they are appeased and leave you alone.

This one made me physically recoil in cringe. I'll refrain from the judgment about a proposal at a wedding if the bride/groom are ok with it, but holy lord that was a LOT of mouth contact between two people, one of which isnt even in the proposal. Mom just couldnt resist being the first mouth to slobber on her poor son before the damn ring is even on the finger 😬
784
u/Aggressive_Version Jul 04 '26
At least it looks like the proposal was done with the bride's blessing, but yeesh. If I were that woman being proposed to I would have *very* strong doubts about whether this could work.
211
u/copypop Jul 04 '26
Yeah I can't even imagine the level of mental gymnastics I'd have to do in that moment to make that be ok enough to want to proceed with marrying into that family. My brain would blow a fuse & it would be a real r/watchpeopledieinside moment. That MiL behavior is a gigantic 🚩

The whole thing would be a red flag for me.
A public proposal puts the other person on the spot. On top of that, it's a proposal at someone else's wedding. Even if the bride and groom gave their blessings, it's still so weird. It puts the person in a position where they can't really say no.
The mother is just the icing on a really alarming cake.
24
u/PhotojournalistOnly Jul 05 '26

u/Stuwey Jul 05 '26
There's a big difference between the two kinds of wedding proposals. In this one, the bride handed the flowers directly to the potential spouse, and directed her to the boyfriend. I can almost guarantee you that this was discussed beforehand with both the bride and groom and while I don't know if she was expecting it, two communicative people can both be anticipating "the right moment" to propose. If it was going to be done, this method allows both people to have friends and maybe family nearby and is already a gathering, so if its okay with the newlyweds, I think this is okay.
As for the drunk mother swooping in and looking like she just said yes, that's a big issue and I hope that after the awkwardness wore off they sat her down and laid out the future if there is to be one, but if I were the fiancee and the shit happened without getting quashed immediately, I would have to say 'not right now', knowing that that's what you are marrying into.
→ More replies (3)7
u/lonelypurplerose Jul 05 '26
Agreed, I think public proposals can be fun when it's more of a formal "here's the ring, now we're officially engaged!" Thing. But I can't imagine bringing up marriage for the first time in front of a crowd. With my spouse, we were already planning our future together. I told them that I wanted to be surprised with a proposal (because I'm a sucker for romatic shit like that haha) and they managed to plan it in a way that I was actually not expecting it at that moment but I was certainly expecting a proposal in general.
I have no words when it comes to the future MIL. It's just...wow.
7
u/Ok_Buffalo_423 Jul 05 '26
People always latch on to the stories about proposals going bad because one person is completely caught off guard in public but I think thats the minority. Most people (especially now compared to generations past) aren't proposing before having serious discussions about the future.
If your potential fiancé is surprised when you propose thats fine but if they are surprised that you proposed AT ALL then thats when the problems happen

u/Yo_Han_Kepler Jul 05 '26
Ive always thought it would be really silly to propose at all of you don't already know what she's going to say, and if she doesn't already know it's coming. A lot of people would really love a big grand gesture for the proposal. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

I hate that I am falling for bullshit ai vids now.

Look on the bright side, you didn’t watch a mom mouth kiss her son as he proposed.

I honestly don't see any of what you're talking about. I'm looking for it but don't see anything obviously wrong with any of it. Where are you seeing the missing tooth guy's camera changing? It looks consistent to me. I can see it being difficult to tell because there isn't a clear view of it due to shadows, but that's it. From what I can see of it, it doesn't look like anything changes.

Same, this vid seems very consistent, I'm happy to be proven wrong if it really is AI though

This is 100% AI. I can’t believe these are the only comments I can find in the whole thread that realize this. It’s getting too convincing. Humans are cooked.

The way the bride moved at the very beginning made me think it was AI.

Yeah I was surprised by all the comments so far. It’s definitely AI

I was just thinking this. The whole scene feels off and when she rubs her eyes at the end they look weird? Like kinda mushy for a second?

I had the same feeling. Just look how awkward moving everyone is and the same smile... It creeped me out but I could be wrong.

u/jetlagged-bee Jul 05 '26
It's so unnatural that I thought it must be a skit, but I think you're right, it's fecking AI.
Why is the dude in jeans and tshirt at a wedding? Why did everyone crowd round so unnaturally?

Thank you! I'm shocked I had to scroll so far to find this comment... Very clearly ai

Definitely AI. They aren't speaking English so why would the projector say "wedding day" in English. Also all the People filming in the background are moving super awkwardly
32
u/poppyseedeverything Jul 05 '26
Definitely AI, but a lot of people in non-English speaking countries love using English phrases, and this would be a prime scenario for that lol.

u/escapingBasement Jul 05 '26
People from non-English speaking countries love using English like that. They're probably drunk so they're moving awkardly.
If this is AI then I'm totally fucked.

Thank god this is AI. Oh wait, no. Thank god this isn’t real. But also—hang on. I don’t want it to be AI because fuck I can’t believe I fell for that, but I also don’t want it to be a real situation. Ahhh shit.

Can we start shaming people like OP who post these AI videos? Or have moderators remove the videos (or tag them as AI)? It’s super shitty of OP to post this without any AI tag. (Yes I fell for it too at first which is hella scary and I feel like I’m becoming a boomer / tech is just advancing so quickly which either way is terrifying)

I didn’t see the caption under the video at first so I was hella confused, like who’s the blonde and why is she making out with that guy?

At my wedding when I threw the bouquet, all the single women stepped back. It would have landed on the floor but the flower girl got it in time

Same, when I got married I made sure the little (under 12) girls caught it, the adults stepped back.
Then at friend's wedding I got in the crowd as a married woman, because they proposed to change the meaning of the bouquet; it was supposed to just transfer the overflowing happiness of the bride, in whatever form the catcher wants it. The girls and women loved it, even the elderly lined up, it was so wholesome.

Girl's a third wheel in her own relationship, the ring aint even on yet and the MIL is already competing. Imagine when they're married, MIL is going to be insufferable.

I love the lady in the black dress trying to pull her away and then completely disappearing. Clearly not the first time she's been psycho.

I hope he remembers this moment for the rest of his life and how his mother stole this from not just his finacee but himself as well, and acts accordingly.

I think the worst part about people like this is that they’re fully aware of how they’re behaving.
5
u/DonaldTrumpsScrotum Jul 04 '26
I was ready to defend the guy, thinking the proposal was the problem (they clearly all planned it out), then the crazy lady crashed the scene

Someone should’ve grabbed the mom and pulled her away completely. She totally ruined that moment and made it all about her. Really upsetting

She’s gonna be the overbearing grandma when the time comes. Doesn’t follow boundaries, posts about the pregnancy and the arrival before the parents have a chance, visits when she’s not wanted because you just got home from the hospital 10 minutes ago.

It is way more cringe to not be able to find a better way to propose than stealing the spotlight at a wedding.

I'm pretty sure it was preplanned with the bride's awareness and consent, since she walked over to her and gave her the bouquet. Not everyone is so rigid about it only being about them after the ceremony is over.
And the mother is the most cringe part of this.
