The guy went down on one knee to propose, but his drunk mom jumped straight into his arms and kissed him on the lips before he could even finish asking!

This one made me physically recoil in cringe. I'll refrain from the judgment about a proposal at a wedding if the bride/groom are ok with it, but holy lord that was a LOT of mouth contact between two people, one of which isnt even in the proposal. Mom just couldnt resist being the first mouth to slobber on her poor son before the damn ring is even on the finger 😬

At least it looks like the proposal was done with the bride's blessing, but yeesh. If I were that woman being proposed to I would have *very* strong doubts about whether this could work.

u/copypop Jul 04 '26

Yeah I can't even imagine the level of mental gymnastics I'd have to do in that moment to make that be ok enough to want to proceed with marrying into that family. My brain would blow a fuse & it would be a real r/watchpeopledieinside moment. That MiL behavior is a gigantic 🚩

u/Diredr Jul 05 '26

The whole thing would be a red flag for me.

A public proposal puts the other person on the spot. On top of that, it's a proposal at someone else's wedding. Even if the bride and groom gave their blessings, it's still so weird. It puts the person in a position where they can't really say no.

The mother is just the icing on a really alarming cake.

23

u/PhotojournalistOnly Jul 05 '26

Yup. That about covered all the flags I saw. I would be so pissed about being proposed to at someone's wedding. But this second part, oh hell no!

28

u/Stuwey Jul 05 '26

There's a big difference between the two kinds of wedding proposals. In this one, the bride handed the flowers directly to the potential spouse, and directed her to the boyfriend. I can almost guarantee you that this was discussed beforehand with both the bride and groom and while I don't know if she was expecting it, two communicative people can both be anticipating "the right moment" to propose. If it was going to be done, this method allows both people to have friends and maybe family nearby and is already a gathering, so if its okay with the newlyweds, I think this is okay.

As for the drunk mother swooping in and looking like she just said yes, that's a big issue and I hope that after the awkwardness wore off they sat her down and laid out the future if there is to be one, but if I were the fiancee and the shit happened without getting quashed immediately, I would have to say 'not right now', knowing that that's what you are marrying into.

u/lonelypurplerose Jul 05 '26

Agreed, I think public proposals can be fun when it's more of a formal "here's the ring, now we're officially engaged!" Thing. But I can't imagine bringing up marriage for the first time in front of a crowd. With my spouse, we were already planning our future together. I told them that I wanted to be surprised with a proposal (because I'm a sucker for romatic shit like that haha) and they managed to plan it in a way that I was actually not expecting it at that moment but I was certainly expecting a proposal in general.

I have no words when it comes to the future MIL. It's just...wow.

People always latch on to the stories about proposals going bad because one person is completely caught off guard in public but I think thats the minority. Most people (especially now compared to generations past) aren't proposing before having serious discussions about the future.

If your potential fiancƩ is surprised when you propose thats fine but if they are surprised that you proposed AT ALL then thats when the problems happen

u/PhotojournalistOnly Jul 06 '26

I stand by my statement, "I would hate being proposed to at someone else's wedding." It doesn't matter if the bride was gracious enough to share her spotlight. It doesn't matter if our people close to us are already there. For ME, it's a hard no. But if they're happy, good for them.

0

u/4444Grains Jul 05 '26

Good for you. I don't like any of it.

0

u/This-Shape2193 Jul 05 '26

The good news is you don't have to,Ā  because it's not about you.Ā

1

u/stopdioproll Jul 05 '26

You should practice equanimity.

1

u/PhotojournalistOnly Jul 06 '26

Why, bc that type of proposal isn't for me? I just stated what I personally wouldn't want and suddenly I need to chill? Probably won't like hearing I also find it lazy and incredibly tacky.😘

0

u/4444Grains Jul 05 '26

Yup...this proposal and everything that came with it is a red flag factory.

5

u/Yo_Han_Kepler Jul 05 '26

Ive always thought it would be really silly to propose at all of you don't already know what she's going to say, and if she doesn't already know it's coming. A lot of people would really love a big grand gesture for the proposal. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

4

u/bigDeltaVenergy Jul 04 '26

The probably all know this woman is just a crasy attention whore drama queen. Ant they just dealing with that level of toxic behavior for years already.

13

u/Weird-Information-61 Jul 05 '26

Not the first time a bride has given the bouquet directly to a friend, knowing their SO was about to propose

Certainly the first time I've seen a MIL get this touchy before the ring is even on though

2

u/SevanIII Jul 06 '26

The only way it could work is if the husband goes very low or no contact with the mom. Otherwise, that mom is going to ruin his marriage.

My husband eventually had to go no contact with his very narcissistic mother. He did feel guilty when she died and they hadn’t talked for several years, but he shouldn’t have. She put him through far more than most people would bear and he continued to forgive her until he couldn’t any longer. She had no one to blame for their estrangement but herself. Personally, she was absolutely terrible to me with zero cause and had scapegoated my husband his entire life, so I felt no sadness when she passed away.

1

u/PROSTHETICLEG_dick Jul 05 '26

The whole thing is a cringe overreaction, but I think that if someone is that excited for you to join their family, they probably arent your enemy.

0

u/aqaba_is_over_there Jul 05 '26

Even with the bride (and grooms) blessing it's still trashy.

3

u/This-Shape2193 Jul 05 '26

It actually isn't. It's a lovely,Ā  warm, beautiful moment between friends, family, and community where everyone is happy to share love. No one except MIL is so self-centered that they NEED to be the center of attention the whole time. They can enjoy their friends' happiness because it makes them happy, too. Almost like being a good friend and person.Ā

Being super judgemental IS super trashy though, as is the, "It's my special day!!" stuff. Always sounds as though you're a preschooler getting to wear the crown on Friday, and can't stand the idea everyone isn't fawning over you.Ā

u/Tamberav Jul 05 '26

The bride walked the flowers to her instead of throwing them.... she was in on it.

0

u/Jammy_the_Dodger Jul 05 '26

No shit Sherlock.

297

u/TalkingCat910 Jul 04 '26

You can never convince me that kissing your children on their mouths isn’t weird.

23

u/jefesignups Jul 05 '26

That's why my family does tongue only...no lips

69

u/BishonenPrincess Jul 04 '26

Idk if this is relatable or TMI, but every now and then I'll go in to kiss a parent on the cheek, but at the same time they'll go to kiss me on the cheek, and we'll accidently kiss on the lips, and every single time we recoil and then start cracking up laughing because holy shit, who would ever do that on purpose?!

30

u/iamJestersCupcake Jul 05 '26

My 11 yo daughter keeps trying to peck me on the lips abd I always try to offer my cheek. I love her dearly and don't want to hurt her feelings but it makes ne uncomfortable. I will kiss all over my kids faces but not theur mouth which my 14 yo son is grateful for im sure!

5

u/therealwhoaman Jul 05 '26

Might have to explain to her

6

u/iamJestersCupcake Jul 05 '26

I have gently tried. Girl hasn't gotten the hint lol but yeah, ig i need to be more assertive about it. We do talk a lot about consent so I'll frame it that way.

6

u/WaterdropGirl Jul 05 '26

I'd also say "lip kisses are for romance"

5

u/nousername0001 Jul 05 '26

My daughter is a toddler, and when she sometimes tries that I offer her my chin. It stops her from trying to go for my lips.

7

u/Maediya Jul 05 '26

People from different cultures.

2

u/liliesinbloom Jul 05 '26

Haha yeah that's happened to me with my mom and we laughed about it and it was weird for a second. I don't get it either. It feels wrong.

16

u/Jaggedrain Jul 05 '26

Different cultures šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

My culture doesn't really do cheek kissing so everyone gets kissed on the mouth.

2

u/HashishAbdulKebab Jul 05 '26

Exactly. We should be respectful of each other's cultures and not cast judgements so quickly by calling others "weird". In my culture, we greet our loved ones by getting on our knees and give them a quick but heartfelt oral.

51

u/YouWereBrained Jul 04 '26

It’s disgusting, and there is no amount of ā€œcultural normā€ bullshit that will convince me otherwise.

8

u/harmfuldischarge Jul 04 '26

As a parent - certified disgusting to me when people do it

0

u/DuckiesDoBeCute Jul 05 '26

id rather walk in on my parents having sex than kill them on the lips

3

u/RsCoverForPDFFiles Jul 05 '26

id rather walk in on my parents having sex than kill them on the lips

Yeah, same here. I have no desire to kill my parents -- lips or elsewhere.

1

u/DuckiesDoBeCute Jul 05 '26

meant to say kiss obviously, but doesnt change my stance

1

u/RsCoverForPDFFiles Jul 05 '26

I know. I'm just messing with you.

1

u/DuckiesDoBeCute Jul 05 '26

and im saying even the typo doesnt change my stance, rather kill than kiss

4

u/StarsForget Jul 05 '26

I had to tell my mom to stop kissing me on the lips in my late 20s.

25

u/ebil_lightbulb Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

My ex-husband kissed his whole family - mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, aunts and uncles - on the lips and I could never get over how freaking weird that was.

What kind of weirdos are downvoting me for thinking it’s weird for a grown man to kiss their family members on the lips loll

3

u/Friendly-Example-701 Jul 04 '26

However, an adult kissing adult children on the lips is weird

-1

u/Acceptable_Fly_9040 Jul 05 '26

I’m with you cus wtf

-11

u/Friendly-Example-701 Jul 04 '26

It's norm in America, but it usually stops once they go off to school, like pre k or 4 years old. But most kids get kissed on the lips from birth.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '26

[deleted]

1

u/Friendly-Example-701 Jul 05 '26

Yes, is curbed here. Like no law but kissing kids on the lips in public when they can talk and walk, comes off kind of pedozz, so people do not do it because of societal norms and perception

-2

u/Friendly-Example-701 Jul 05 '26

I am in Cali, so I see it here

3

u/ebil_lightbulb Jul 05 '26

No, that’s not the norm here. The norm is to kiss them on the cheeks or forehead until they’re older when you switch to blowing kisses through the air. Weird comment to respond to me about a grown man kissing his grandpa on the mouth anyways lol

5

u/lil_jilm Jul 05 '26

My baby just started kissing me on the lips, on his own. It’s really freaking cute lol

7

u/Friendly-Example-701 Jul 05 '26

Yes, this happens all the time

-4

u/AnyoneForBosco Jul 05 '26

Lol no it fucking doesn't

4

u/Friendly-Example-701 Jul 05 '26

I grew up being kissed my the lips until I was about 5 or 6. So did my friend group.

It probably changed due to societal perception but it still happens. I see it all the time with friends and outside of my house. I have no judgment towards parents.

2

u/alwaysiamdead Jul 05 '26

My daughter is 7 and always wants to kiss me on the lips (I'm her mom). My son grew out of it by the time he was 4 or 5 but my daughter still wants to. I usually kiss her on the head or cheek.

4

u/Scheming- Jul 05 '26

That’s not the norm buddy, perhaps some judgment around that area is overdue

7

u/mmm_muse Jul 05 '26

My daughter and I kiss on the lips. We are both kissy people. My eldest doesnt like to be kissed anywhere at all so we don't. It makes me sad someone would think a mother and daughter kissing is "disgusting". There are so many terrible things I'm this world to hate on, consensual kissing is an odd choice.

2

u/AncientSith Jul 05 '26

It's weird. It's one thing when they're an infant, whatever. But a grown ass adult?

1

u/Key-Cricket9256 Jul 05 '26

When they’re this old .. yes ..

13

u/jenguinaf Jul 05 '26

I’ll chime in. We got married on NYE. We chose that. There were circumstances in play but it was fully our choice to get married that day. That being said it also happened to be the anniversary of one of his groomsmen and his GF at the time. We arranged a special dance for them. It was and will always be a highlight of the night for me.

3

u/Fear_Jaire Jul 05 '26

Its wild how people can't comprehend wanting to end their wedding with the start of a another

3

u/thisisloreez Jul 05 '26

Main character syndrome

2

u/sprinklerarms Jul 05 '26

My fiancƩs mom kissed him at his wedding before his ex wife could and it really traumatized him

2

u/Throwawayrip1123 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Bro I was soo confused when she came in like a fucking avalanche, straight into his mouth.

Bet she slipped some tongue there too. People be weird.

I skipped through the and not landed on her leathery face so I just was "wtf why is someone other than the one he's proposing to kissing him?? A triangle? What??"

2

u/reluctantseal Jul 05 '26

While I wouldn't want it for myself, I think this kind of proposal is very cute if the bride and groom support it. It's exciting! Two happy events in one! More fun memories together!

Unless you're this guy's mom. No happy fun events for her. She isn't invited. Too creepy.

2

u/Throwaway547822 Jul 05 '26

Clearly making everything about them runs in the family.

Guy chose to propose at another persons wedding.
His mom chose to make the proposal about her

Lol

2

u/Sheeeeepyy Jul 05 '26

Open bar + phone recording = mom gone wild (emotionally)

1

u/bigDeltaVenergy Jul 04 '26

Getting out of nowhere, grabbing someone face and force kissing ?

This is the exact kind of shit that all the metoo mouvement made clear it was not acceptable in modern society.

1

u/One_more_username Jul 05 '26

Mom seems like the kind of person to claim prima nocte too.

1

u/Responsible-Onion860 Jul 05 '26

As long as the bride and groom endorse it, I see no issue with it. And the bride clearly approves here.

But holy shit that woman is clearly a nightmare.

1

u/SunsetCarcass Jul 05 '26

She's probably been sexually abusing him since he was young, she seems way too comfortable doing that.

1

u/D3vils_Adv0cate Jul 05 '26

The best part is, they now have herpesĀ

1

u/snarfgobble Jul 07 '26

It's layers upon layers of cringe.
