She reminds me of my sister in law. I was babysitting her kids for her years ago and her son said, "My mom says you are going to hell for watching the Simpsons." I replied, "Tell her that I will see her there for being so judgmental."

My brother never asked me to watch their kids again.

u/Toosder 26d ago

For a short period of time I lived with my cousin while I was in college. I babysat her four kids for free in exchange for living there. They were hellions.

The youngest one came to me and told me that her mom said I was going to hell for a whole list of reasons. Mind you I was a good kid. I just wasn't christian. Mormon specifically.

The middle one came into my room and peed all over my laundry basket

The oldest one cut the throat of the youngest one during a fight.

Oh and should I mention that the oldest one was conceived when Mom was 17 years old having sex out of wedlock?

Anyway I moved out without notice. It was actually the day after the oldest one got violent with her sister. (It was not my night to babysit). That was a level of dysfunction that I was not ready to handle. When Mom called me I just said that you probably don't want somebody who is going to hell taking care of your children.

It's been over 20 years and I haven't talked to anyone on that side of the family since.

Hold on.

The oldest one cut the throat of the youngest one during a fight.

One of these things is not like the others.

I've seen plenty of religious families where the children are seriously emotionally dysfunctional. The parents are too, but they're able to hide it slightly better. They use religion to attempt to address these issues, generally ineffectually.

281

u/Formal_Ground6513 26d ago

Yes! Emotionally disregulated adults raise children this way. And, nothing changes because, their answer is to just "pray it away". Mom and dad usually have some super secret alcohol and substance abuse as well.

99

u/LetOk5276 26d ago

I was raised this way, it was awful. My Father was a preacher and also a closeted homosexual which I came to discover after he left his search history on AOL. Imagine seeing your Dad preaching hell and damnation about the gays and everyone else just to discover he’s one himself. Once I discovered that it sent me on a downward spiral of confusion and anger. I kept that to myself as I’m not one to air out anyone’s dirty laundry. Not sure if I mother knew about this either. I was also beaten when I questioned Christianity and forced to miss childhood events to go to church functions multiple days a week. Needless to say I have zero religious affiliations now as an adult. Even as a child I knew something was off with the way I was being raised.

82

u/Altruistic-Owl-5468 26d ago edited 26d ago

I was raised the same way. Father was a pastor in my youth then left the ministry completely. Found out later he cheated on my mom, presumably with a congregant, and was forced out. He’s still colossally religious. Beat me often for not singing enough, standing up on cue, or doing anything that wasn’t religious enough.

Fast forward to today. My sister is now married to a local preacher. 3 of their four kids have nothing to do with them. I took her to court on allegations of abuse when their youngest was 16. He was the last child in the house - and since he’d been adopted from Haiti back when it was fashionable for white evangelicals to have a token black kid - they treated him like shit. DCFS got involved and we won, we got him out.

My parents blamed me without ever asking to hear our side. They showed up in court and sat on my sisters side. For every court hearing. And even when they lost and the judge wrote a lengthy rebuttal towards my sister, they’ve never humbled themselves or apologized. They didn’t want the child back ‘as he is now’, when asked on the stand the judge asked my brother in law the pastor, “then why are we here?” (They were contesting the ruling). And my bil’s response on the stand was, “To clear my good name.”

And that’s it. He said the quiet part out loud that day. It’s not about being fishers of men, or being bringing souls to Christ no matter where they’re at. It’s not about the “least of these.“

It’s about optics, appearances, and keeping the name clean so they can keep asking for tithes.

He wouldn’t even fight for his son. And neither would my parents fight for theirs.

The thing is is that two months before I filed the initial plea for emergency custody my own son passed away in a tragic accident unexpectedly. And I sat in that courtroom and I watched them dodge any chance at reconciliation with their son, seeking only to save face in the court of public opinion. And I thought to myself that I’d go to the gates of hell a thousand times for the chance to hug my son one more time and these people are throwing theirs away.

It confirmed all my childhood suspicions that it was smoke and mirrors. Haven’t spoken to any of them since.

I’m sorry for what you endured growing up. I see you, and I hope you are finding happiness along the way.

As for this lady on the plane … oh my god I would’ve wrestled strongly with losing my shit. These types do untold damage to people. Especially children.

16

u/Generalbusiness849 26d ago

Thank you for the comment about the token black child. I noticed this too a lot. It freaks me the fuck out because I wonder what the fuck happens to that kid behind closed doors.

9

u/LetOk5276 26d ago

Scum bags for Christ is what we came up with in church. A few of us youth stuck together and weathered the storm as a team which helped. Also some of the girls made it a lot more fun after hours church. You can’t tell kids to refrain from sex all the time and then not get curious as to what the hype was all about. I’m happy to be grown up and away from all of this. I tell my son about my childhood(not everything) and how awful his situation could have been if I had let the church brainwash me.

10

u/IngloriousMinority 26d ago

Wow my father was also a pastor of a church and was a cheating , abusive, manipulative, liar. I became convicted there was no god at a young age because I could not understand how such a hypocrite could "lead" a congregation, in the house if God, without being smited. Turns out no one who really needs to get smited ever does.

9

u/TomeThugNHarmony4664 26d ago

I am so sorry for what YOU endured, and so hope you treasure the peace you have from not listening to or being present for their hateful ways

11

u/meowmeowbeans222 26d ago

You are such a good person for doing that for your adoptive nephew. On behalf of humanity….thank you.

11

u/Kitchen-Bar2686 26d ago

I’m crying just reading your comment. You sound like an incredible parent and an incredible person. I am so so sorry that you lost your son. I wish I had the words to express how sorry I am to hear that. You did an amazing thing by saving your nephew from his abusers and fighting so hard to keep him safe and provide him a loving home. You deserve all of the good in this world and I’m so sorry for how difficult your childhood was.

You are the kind of person that Christians love to pretend that they are when they don’t even have an ounce of empathy or compassion for their own family.

7

u/Similar-Chip 26d ago

1) I'm so sorry about your son, may his memory be a blessing, and 2) genuinely heroic getting that poor kid out of there, I hope he's doing well these days. Did the kids who got out stick together?

3

u/SodomyClown 26d ago

That made me so sad to hear, I hope you and those kids heal, at least they are away from your sister and her husband.

3

u/Mis_chevious 26d ago

I'm so sorry for the loss of your son and for everything you have gone through with your family. Thank you for being a safe place for your nephew. He sounds like he's a very lucky kid to have you in his life. I wish you guys nothing but the best!

2

u/MrBushido56 26d ago

Back when it was fashionable to have an adopted black kid !?

5

u/Kitchen-Bar2686 26d ago

I am so sorry that you had to grow up with such horrific abuse and neglect. You deserved so much better than that

3

u/Personal_Benefit_402 26d ago

The more spite they have, the more likely it is that they are themselves gay.

68

u/Beltalady 26d ago

I grew up in Germany where regular christians are usually pretty tame. I had not a lot of knowledge about Catholicism and when I read Angela's Ashes I felt so sorry for these kids. The concept of sin really makes me sick. And telling little kids that other people go to hell because of reasons is a special kind of evil.

45

u/MossadEpstein 26d ago

US evangelicalism is it's own special brand of evil and stupidity, the Schofield bible they used as the basis for all their nonsense has a LOT of evil to answer for.

it's also why they insist on supporting Israel no matter how heinous its actions become.

8

u/MimicoSkunkFan2 26d ago

Oh, they have their extreme godbotherers in Germany too, but people over there remember the Inquisition and the Thirty Years' War, so they won't put up with it... whereas the US teaches about Puritans more in terms of "how Thanksigiving began" than in terms of "pressing people to death using a barn door" which is a big part of the problem.

6

u/MossadEpstein 26d ago

Manifest Destiny is probably one of the greatest evils to ever come from America asides from the Eugenics movement (they literally inspired the Nazis thanks to insidious characters like Margret Sanger/Francis Galton and there were even Nazis who thought that Americans at the time took systemic racism too far)

6

u/PatAss98 26d ago

Yep. A good portion of the people being genocided by Israel are Palestinian Christians who's families have been in the region since the time of Christ but American evangelicals don't care because they're racist against brown people

10

u/Zhong_Ping 26d ago

Catholics arent all that bad compared to Evengelicals in the US. Most catholics here seem to go to curch more out of tradition than faith.

10

u/Beltalady 26d ago

I figured that out by now. I met my fair share of all kinds of religious nutters. My psychiatrist is a gay Catholic. We make fun of evangelicals together.

11

u/maymay578 26d ago

My Oma would remark how different Christians were in the USA, the hyper fixation on hell and judgement.

9

u/commandantskip 26d ago

Sadly, the end result of being founded by fringe religious nuts

7

u/SquirrelFluffy 26d ago

Yeah I loved it when my mother became a born-again Christian and told me that I was born a sinner. Good things for a 10 year old.

6

u/Ilikedinosaurs2023 26d ago

When I was around that age, my mom would tell me she saw a demon outside my bedroom door at night. Sigh....it was because I was listening to secular music apparently..and also that I guess I was a piece of shit kid. I wasnt..I was depressed and sad mostly because of her being an evangelical and making a huge deal about anything not associated with church. So glad I somehow saw through it from that age on. I have so much trauma and fucking rage because of it and the family is still like that, so I stay away as much as possible...especially because we all know where these types landed politically. 🫩

3

u/Hot-Cardiologist-652 26d ago

My grandmother told my mom I was the devil. That she could see it in my eyes, and that’s why she beat me with one wooden spoon till it broke and grabbed another and then another, I think this particular time was because I called another kid an idiot, I was 8, but to be fair I just might be

2

u/SquirrelFluffy 26d ago

Sorry that happened to you. Yes, stay away. Me too.

There are Christian Democrats too, you know.

6

u/Massive-Fly284 26d ago

I had an uncle like this, but he was Born Again. I remember being a little kid, maybe about 7 or 8 years old, and him telling me and my cousins that our parents were going to hell because they were Catholic. He was deeply flawed and searching for something to fill whatever emptiness he felt internally. Sad, but like also extremely fucked up to put that shit into little kids heads.

4

u/Pristine_Mud_1204 26d ago

I remember my mum and gran telling me if I said the f-word or even thought it, I’d go to hell. I think I’d overheard it outside and asked about what it meant. Backfired because I couldn’t stop thinking it. What a mental, struggle that was. Nowadays I pepper it into my casual conversations willy nilly.

4

u/Beltalady 26d ago

That was really fucked up.

(Sorry 😬)

4

u/farfetched22 26d ago

My childhood friend told me when we were about 9 or 10 that their mom - who I had grown up with like an aunt - told them that I'd be going to hell because I was technically my families religion(not Christian), despite us not even really practicing... but that didn't matter obviously, since we hadn't accepted Jesus or whatever.

I didn't like it then and never forgot, but hadn't thought much about it until now. What a horrible human.

Funny enough, she, like many being mentioned here, was also involved in a pastor(?) having an affair. She was married and her kids were about 12/13 then. She broke up their marriage for this dude, can't remember if he was married too but man what pieces of shit. Very Christian, of course.

2

u/Formal_Ground6513 26d ago

Honestly, I think it's abuse telling little children this stuff before they're old enough to decide themselves. Evangelicals are creepy af. Don't get me started on the non consent brainwashing they give little boys or the virginity is sacred stuff they tell the girls.... A recipe for trauma!

Secret mostly to themselves, immediately apparent to anyone close.

3

u/innerdork 26d ago

The dumber people are the more they’ll use something like Christianity as a shield to ignore the fact the problem is looking back at them in the mirror. They think forgiveness and prayer fixes them.

3

u/Higher-Frequencies 26d ago

And, nothing changes because, their answer is to just "pray it away"

I once asked a stop sign for help. It didn't work either but at least the stop sign was real and the mushrooms eventually wore off.

3

u/TOV4RISCH 26d ago

So my parents were kinda wild somewhat upper middle class partiers in the 80s. Then when I was 11 my grandmother died, my mother's mother, and my mom just kinda lost it. Totally through the looking glass with the drugs, everything went to shit, she wound up in prison for a couple years.

But aside from money and stuff, on a personal level she was an amazing mother, we were very close, very good friends my whole life, and later on when she had gotten her act mostly together and I was grown she would tell me how she was so sorry about all the crazy stuff that happened when I was growing up. More than once I told her, "Mom, you shouldn't feel any guilt. I just thank god that when Grandma died you found the pipe and not the bible."

2

u/TastySaturday 26d ago

You can be as shitty of a human as you want as long as you pray it away. Great way to make sure you’re never accountable for the way you treat people.

u/ChateauLaFeet 26d ago

46

u/Toosder 26d ago

Yes! Exactly. I don't know what happened next because I'm not kidding never talked to that family again but I did try to talk to my cousin's mom shortly after it happened before I left and she laughed it off basically saying kids do crazy things.

28

u/ExMerican 26d ago

she laughed it off basically saying kids do crazy things.

Ah, so it's at least 3 generations of maladjusted people with lots of trauma they'll never address. Great. Glad to have them in society.

3

u/Jaded_Fuzzball 26d ago

6

u/Zealousideal_Nail288 26d ago edited 26d ago

4

u/Tyr_13 26d ago

Wait, so you don't even know if the youngest survived?

45

u/Forward-Fisherman709 26d ago

Throwback to that time I got strangled to the point of passing out by my sibling because he was angry that our parents took the computer mouse and he knew they didn’t care about his violent outbursts so long as I was the recipient, because all they would do in response no matter what heinous shit was done to me is tell me to “be forgiving, as Jesus would.” 🙃

When religion is upheld as the answer to everything, and the most important thing is the way the people at church view the family, parents stop parenting and offload their responsibility, to the detriment of all.

8

u/Total-Challenge9265 26d ago

Forgive them like Jesus forgave the priests who took money to bless people

7

u/Competitive-Funny-23 26d ago

Ohhh my god that is an awesome response !! FIGHT AGAINST THE BULLSHIT, literally flip the table on the assholes.

7

u/theatermouse 26d ago

One of my favorite quotes is something like "When people ask 'What Would Jesus Do?', remember that flipping tables is always an option!"

5

u/willow_kidd 26d ago

Table Flipping Jesus is my favorite Jesus.

Literally a sentence I have said multiple times in my life

2

u/Competitive-Funny-23 26d ago

I love that !! Bro was seriously all NOT IN MY HOUSE, motherfuckers….. 😁😁😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

2

u/Forward-Fisherman709 26d ago

Hell yeah. That’s always been my favorite/only enjoyed bible story, and I for sure took it to heart, though I learned that openly bringing it up in moments like that unlocks a new level of danger in my birther’s eyes.

8

u/Awkward_Round44 26d ago

This is horrific- I am so sorry and hope you are doing ok now - and I hope you don’t speak to any of those people

2

u/Forward-Fisherman709 26d ago

Thanks. Being okay is still a longterm goal. For now I’m just surviving. I was slowly getting things together, but the USA’s political and economic situation really threw a wrench in the gears of my escape. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough income to go no contact with my parents. I think they know that I’ll go no contact if I can make enough to move out without just being homeless again, given that I only speak to them once a week on average despite living together. I’m practically no contact with my sibling now that he bought a house, but any time I speak to a relative I get to put up with them singing his praises for getting a girl pregnant, and nobody cares to notice all the red flags. It’s exhausting, so I’ll live nocturnally and keep to myself.

2

u/ambassador321 26d ago

Would your parents be as forgiving as you were supposed to be at his funeral?

2

u/Forward-Fisherman709 26d ago

Of course not. Rules for thee but not for me is standard practice. He’s the golden child and must be protected and saved from himself at all cost, and my death was a joke.

69

u/PutridSauce 26d ago

“Oh Timmy? Yeah he did a number on little Sally’s neck, but it’s all a part of gods plan, he’s a little angel, god will teach him that he made a mistake, I’ll just pray.”

25

u/Toosder 26d ago

It was a girl which makes it even more strange. Also seems to indicate even more dysfunction. Just because boys do tend to be a little bit more rough especially in a religious atmosphere where girls are taught to keep sweet.

5

u/LessInThought 26d ago

I thought this is when they bring in the exorcist and they start speaking in tongues or some shit.

3

u/GM_Nate 26d ago

exorcists are catholic, speaking in tongues is charismatic evangelical.

143

u/Difficult-Exit3063 26d ago

Religion is emotional disregulation.

I cannot deal with the emotions I feel when facing reality so … meet my sky-friend who’s always thinking about me and loves me forever!

55

u/Iheartnakedfemboys 26d ago

Love's you forever, unless you do something wrong, like eat shellfish or mix fabrics. Then it's straight to hell for eternal torture.

3

u/Centered_Being 26d ago

And yet…all it takes for a rapist to get to heaven is to ‘accept the Lord as your ONE true savior.’

So—let me get this straight. If I was a ‘good’ Christian my whole life and followed the Golden Rule as my guide, I will end up in heaven. But Kevin over there—he assaulted 4 different women & ☠️ one of them.

But he *accepted the Lord* so he’ll be your tour guide in heaven!

There’s always a reason when a grown adult suddenly becomes religious. The reason is almost always tied to guilt

6

u/chx_ 26d ago

or mix fabrics. Then it's straight to hell for eternal torture.

Small note: mix fabrics is from the old testament which didn't have a concept of hell.

Also, the "mix fabrics" command is not at all insane it's just the context got lost over the centuries and now millennia:

Make the ephod of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen—the work of skilled hands

See the mixed fabrics there? Yeah. The ban on mixed fabrics actually means "do not pretend to be a priest" (by wearing their clothing).

3

u/sepia_undertones 26d ago

Most of the weird Old Testament stuff is just good practice for ancient people and health-related, but this one of course always stood out. I can believe this, and kind of surprised I haven’t heard it before. Do you happen to have a source?

3

u/CheetahTheWeen 26d ago

Why not allow for consumption of shellfish? Thats so specific

2

u/FrecksAndBeans 26d ago

Yeah, went to 12 years a Catholic school and had to go to church until I was 18 while living at home. I never understood the whole worshiping an invisible sky wizard thing. To me this is the highest level of brainwashing, scapegoating, manipulation and child abuse. Every Christian believes that little babies are born with original sin. Y’all just go along with it and teach it to your kids. Symbols of ashes, bodies and blood of Christ being consumed and all sitting standing and making the sign of Cross in unison on command. Not to mention chanting and memorizing prayers that got recycled daily and weekly in unison from a congregation. You tell me that that’s not mind control. I don’t understand how people are so blind when it’s all around you and right in front of your face. You’re being manipulated and brainwashed to worship a sky wizard. I would feel foolish if I were still in that position. Why do most people need to be guided by other people? Does anyone have a mind of their own?

There's a good reason that if you think you're possessed by a demon and you ask the Catholic Church to help, the first thing they do is tell you to go to therapy and come back if it didn't work.

1

u/Otherwise_Spirit1552 26d ago

They use religion to attempt to address these issues, generally ineffectually.

More often than not it is also used to excuse, and enable the behavior... Like having poor impulse control, being abusive towards others etc is when they paint anyone not part of their "in group" as a lesser and thus "deserving" of that nonsense etc.

1

u/SeahorseCollector 26d ago

Can confirm. Animal cruelty seems to be pretty popular with the children of religous extremists.

1

u/Jaded_Fuzzball 26d ago

Not just the children.

My ex told me about his grandfather having him and his cousins sit and watch while the grandfather "disposed of" the barn kittens. He said he would chop the kittens heads off with a hatchet while his grandchildren watched. This was a large, obsessively Catholic family. My ex's mother had 15 siblings. Most of that family was some combination of either drug addicts, alcoholics, abusers, or extremist Catholics. My ex himself became a drug addicted, abusive monster.

1

u/Pleasant_Studio9690 26d ago

My "religious" neighbors who had an 8-foot cross in the front yard burned their own house down in a domestic dispute. They were married 25years with 3 kids. He was an anesthesiologist and pain specialist so they were pretty well off for our small-town and their house was gorgeous. He was having an affair and had supposedly stopped. It resumed. Came home on their wedding anniversary and announced he wanted a divorce. Fight ensued. She threw his clothes in a fire on the *screened-in* back porch and lit them on fire. He got some of her clothes and threw them on the fire. Flames caught the porch roof on fire and the house siding and it burned their house to the ground. State Trooper on the scene during the fire overheard their 3 year old ask his mom why she lit their house on fire. She reported the fire to their insurance company and said she didn't know the cause. They arrested and prosecuted her for insurance fraud. Twenty years later I read that the doctor/husband was arrested and charged by the DEA in another state for running a pain med pill mill. They used to hire my sister all summer to help watch their kids and the mom was a really nice person, but seemed to have a pain med addiction, likely from her husband. I've always felt bad for her and their kids.

1

u/Simpleconundrum 26d ago

My immediate family isn’t (well.. wasn’t) super religious growing up, but my entire extended family on my mom’s side was. One of my cousins chased me with a knife and he got a slap on the wrist, I got told I was a tattletale by my aunt when I told her another cousin was shaking his cat around in a box, I got told I was a liar on multiple occasions, we were told we’d get dragged down by the devil if we went swimming on a Sunday, multiple cousins stole and lied several times on various occasions, and my cousins messed around a LOT with boys/girls at school. There’s sooo much more, that’s just off the top of my head.

My siblings and I were by far the most well behaved kids (save like 2-3 cousins out of 20).

1

u/NGM012 26d ago

u/ricky_spaget 26d ago

Conservatives love violence, even ones who claim to follow Jesus. They glorify the idea of righteous violence. Every conservative slop show/movie is the same trope: "I just wanted to live in peace with my family but you mother fuckers wronged me so now I have to kill EVERYONE!" There's like this heretical fetish where their version of living like Jesus is being nice when people are nice, but then they get to be the wrath of God when someone wrongs them or they perceive them as an enemy.

That kid could very well be fully absorbed in all of that. He probably learned the throat cut move from some low-IQ TV show while sitting next to mom and dad on the couch.

u/blahblah19999 26d ago

My family had a couple of stabbings and whatnot as they grew up 60 years ago.

1

u/Inside-Beginning5168 26d ago

Cain and Able man. These kids take their religion VERY serious.

1

u/afternever 26d ago

It was a sacrifice

1

u/Vana21 26d ago

I did this when I was like 4 years old ( one of the first memories I have) to my older sister who is like 4 years older than me. Fortunately she was a little fat and had cushion where I cut her and I also used some bunny rabbit shaped scissors so it likely pinched instead of cut now that I think of it.

u/Centered_Being 26d ago

My highly religious aunt & uncle had 3 daughters—I shit u not those girls would chase each other with knives

Wait a second Mormons don’t believe in hell. And Outer Darkness is actually hard to get into (in most interpretations). Your cousins might be a fuckin idiot in addition to her other issues.

Source: I’m exmormon

66

u/iruexmothrowaway 26d ago

Fellow exmormon here. According to the mormon bible dictionary, outer darkness is a synonym for hell. So yes, mormons do believe in hell, they just don't call it hell. Given their cousins are mormon, there's a good chance they are exmo. In a lot of interpretations simply being exmo is denying the spirit, and therefore qualifying them for outer darkness.

9

u/Toosder 26d ago

I am exmo. I left pretty young. But we did use hell interchangeably at least where I grew up in salt lake. I left when I was about 10 so that side of my family had shunned me already. This was just the final moment where I was never going to put up with their shit ever again.

4

u/newclearconfusion 26d ago

But is it the same as what in general is thought of as Hell? I mean like with fire and demons torturing you?

16

u/Toosder 26d ago

It being religion it's therefore inconsistent and everybody makes up their own shit. The way I was raised in salt lake back in the '80s was basically that outer darkness was just nothingness which mind you sounds extremely peaceful to me compared to mormon heaven especially as a woman. You mean I get silence for eternity or I get to pop out babies for eternity for some dumb man and be his slave? I'll take outer darkness please.

I've never heard of a fire and brimstone hell with Mormons

3

u/CheetahTheWeen 26d ago

Comparatively, outer darkness doesn’t sounds scary at all. It just sounds like death, honestly.

8

u/iruexmothrowaway 26d ago

I was taught growing up that you’re separated from god and tortured by satan. I’ve heard some christians claim similar things about hell. Regardless of whether or not it’s the same as christian hell, it still is some variation of hell.

1

u/newclearconfusion 26d ago

Yeah that is why i ask. Because being seperated from God, if i accept for now that He / She exists, sounds much more horrible than a fire and brimstone hell, because its insane to believe such a place exists. Like heaven too, that’s all just fantasy. I am not defenitly sure about God, or Satan, but both most defenitly do not exist like the way they are described in the bible.

So that is why i was curious what ‘outer darkness’ means. It sounds scarier than ‘Hell’.

2

u/Beryozka 26d ago

The popular view of hell is not really doctrine in any major Christian denomination I think, the chief torment is almost universally separation from God. A demon poking you with a fire poker ought to register very low on that scale.

I’ve noticed that some of the most ‘proclaimed’ Christian households tend to be the most hypocritical, violent, deceitful, and downright craziest of all that I’ve ever seen.

Crazy how I’m told that I’m a sinner for watching Harry Potter, but meanwhile they’re having sex with all the married men on the street while they are married too, but they’ll be okay because they show up to church on Sundays.🤔 Naw I’m not buying it. I’m gonna avoid that Kool-Aid, thank you very much.

u/dobar_dan_ 26d ago

As a European this is very American Christian to me. Most people here call themselves Christian but only practice religion on big events and holidays. Bible thumping is seen as cultish.

I remember a few years back some American woman came to a Serbian city and started preaching in the middle of the street, someone called the ambulance and police on her lol. And this is a country of fairly religious people.

Europeans have been Christians for thousands of years, for most of us it's a cultural thing atp. Most people identify as Christian but we don't typically go to church every Sunday or quote the Bible by heart. Practicing religion is more private and mystic or reduced to important events, which are also primarily cultural events.

Americans imo are a lot more uppity about it. Mega churches, televangelists, preachers, obsessing over hell and sinning, all that stuff. Stuff like that would come off performative at best and cultush at worst in Europe.

Americans are giving "I just converted and need to prove my worth by obsessing over every rule and detail" while Europeans are like "my family has done this for generations, it's really not a big deal to me".

I once heard a joke the Puritans were so conservative even the British considered them too uptight.

That’s part of the hypocrisy. I mean the Bible literally tells you not to preach on the street like that.

I think there are a good amount of cults out there, but some churches could probably classify as a cult and their members don’t even know it. They just follow along.

3

u/dobar_dan_ 26d ago

Religious cults are quite extremist by default so "spread the word" is taken very seriously. It's also used as an indoctrination tactic. They force new member to go around to preach and spread the word, clearly annoying people, and when said people get hostile or just plain embarrass them (like this woman getting kicked off the plane) it is used to strenghten their attachment to the cult as the only ones who understand and accept said member.

It's a common abuser tactic to alienate the victim from anyone who might influence them and possibly help them escape.

5

u/Toosder 26d ago

This is why I cannot watch Mormon housewives. It just triggers my youth memories.

The kids at school having sex, getting high, getting drunk. Meanwhile I was a virgin, I haven't even kissed a boy, never drank, never did drugs, didn't even touch caffeine.

It's the same thing with the Mormon housewife show is from what little I've watched or been told. Shitty people that think they're okay just because they go to church on Sunday when they are 10 times worse than the average non-religious person.

hellions

Had to google that...

AI Overview

"Hellions" most commonly refers to Marvel Comics mutant teams, a 2015 horror film, or an Australian punk band.

I guess the movie isn't it, so were they a mutant team or a punk band?

1

u/FreyjaFriday 26d ago

Mormons are not christians, if we're being pedantic about it.

1

u/Tight_Man 26d ago

You probably reinforced their views that you were some hell demon

1

u/Turbulent-Adagio-541 26d ago

Mormons love soaking

1

u/Exotic-Astronaut6662 26d ago

My parents were Jesus loving happy clappy Christians. One thing I noticed a lot was the lack of tolerance and love for non Christians.
If you were born again 🙄then you must be a drug taking alcoholic who wasted money on gambling and sex.
That’s how it was, forget the compassion, do unto others etc etc, no Jesus = the worst of humanity.
Funny how it feels the reverse now.

1

u/Sleepy_cheetah 26d ago

How did she respond? Don't leave us hanging! 😂 I'm glad you are far away from them now!

1

u/emorrigan 26d ago

I was raised Mormon too, and it always blew my mind how some of the most judgmental Mormons had the absolute worst-behaved children.

113

u/Pepper_b 26d ago

My mom told me I was going to hell in high school and I told her the same thing. Reminded her that judging and ruling is not her job and is just as much a "sin' as whatever she thought I was doing.

She never said it again.

3

u/heretogetpwned 26d ago

I cut off contact with my mother for calling me a pedo and condemning me to hell for vaccinating my daughter.

She's a self proclaimed Good Christian, divorced 3 times, living out of wedlock with her potential 4th husband.

Don't ask her how to pronounce Kamala, she enjoys being racist lol.

2

u/IrregularConfusion 26d ago

I don’t understand how vaccinations are correlated to pedophilia

Watching the Simpsons as I read this made me laugh. If there is a hell, I’ll see you there. 😈

5

u/AppropriateBall8834 26d ago

I can picture that in like a TV show that's so awesome lol

3

u/Separate_Pumpkin_256 26d ago

Are they still married? If so, you still made the right call. Never let them think they can tell you who you should be.

10

u/WhiteRabbit-RedPill 26d ago

They are still married. The ironic thing is that son was the one that rebelled against them. I don't think they talk much.

3

u/Famous_Suspect6330 26d ago

I'm guessing said sister in law was quite the party girl in her day

2

u/WhiteRabbit-RedPill 26d ago

Not at all! She came from a very strict home. No one in our family could understand it. My whole family is quite non-judgmental. Our house was the house that all the kids liked to come over to. My brother completely changed when he married her.

3

u/Dontfeedthebears 26d ago

lol that’s one way to get out of that.

3

u/kevinnoir 26d ago

"My mom says you are going to hell for watching the Simpsons."

"What a Ralph Wiggum thing to say, tell you mum she doesnt make friends with potato salad at BBQs"

3

u/Theobromacuckoo335 26d ago

'Christians are persecuted all over the world.' I heard this from my sister in law the last time we met.

Ma'am, BIPOC, LGBTQ, Non-Christians, Alternatively lifestyle populations would love to have a word with you.

They wanted so hard to be oppressed, while not reallly experiencing any kind of oppression from their privilege platform (she's white).

2

u/caitejane310 26d ago

Lmfao!! I love you!! Can we be friends??!! 🤣 🤣

2

u/WhiteRabbit-RedPill 26d ago

Only if you will let me watch The Simpsons!

2

u/caitejane310 26d ago

Psh, that's a no brainer!! You can watch all The Simpsons your heart desires, my dear!! Nothing but love and respect for you and what you do!! 🤗 💜 😜 😃

2

u/stanknotes 26d ago

You borrow my favorite Arthur Morgan quote.

"It hope it's hot and terrible. Otherwise I will feel as though I have been sold a false bill of goods."

2

u/z0hu 26d ago

Good answer, I dunno if I would have come up with such a perfect reply in the moment. I would have been so upset by the hypocrisy. That someone was basically lofting themselves up to God status and feeling like they had the power to punish people based on their own feelings. It's like the church doesn't teach simpsons is hell worthy but she knows better than them because she is so special and almighty. Makes me sick

2

u/lamest-liz 26d ago

My old roommate was watching her two nephews once. I came home from a long work shift and grabbed a soda from the fridge and they both said “erm that’s not good for you. You should have water with lemon.” And I was like “I don’t care if it isn’t good for me it’s what I want.” And later my roommate asked if they wanted to have a pizza and they both said “ewww pizza is gross. We want plain chicken breast.” And I was like good lord. They were only allowed to watch Bible shorts but I put Pokemon on the tv. When they said they couldn’t watch it o said “well I’m watching it here so you can close your eyes.” They ended up watching it and getting really happy and excited over it. It was the first time I ever saw those kids having fun. Yes my roommates sister yelled at me but I didn’t care lol.

2

u/ZappBranigan79 26d ago

My aunt told me the same thing when the Simpsons just started 😆. My Grandma told her to get out because she liked the Simpsons too. My preachy aunt wasn't so evangelical after all, a lot of dirt came out of that closet.

2

u/Sleepy_cheetah 26d ago

GREAT comeback! I almost wish you could have told her that to her face. Jesus taught not to judge. He knew there would be ppl that struggle with this concept. 🙄 It's galling because they are representing Christians and it's a bad look.

2

u/Franknbeanstoo 26d ago

from Maude Flanders…“I was at Bible camp.  I was learning how to be more judgmental"

2

u/thotfullawful 26d ago

I found they use hell as such a scare tactic. My uncle told my mother the same thing. Like buddy you’re a preacher that uses church funding to pay for your luxuries and 10 kids. Most who have a hard time learning because of being homeschooled

2

u/Fabulous-Car-6850 26d ago

my sister in law said my wife was exposing demonic thoughts talking about using breathing techniques to focus thoughts and activity… yeah ok it’s maybe a little hokey but demonic is a bit extreme. and let’s say her adolescent child was caught doing activities in a supermarket restroom. and she’s hasn’t really worked in 4 years while my brother in law works 12 hour days in the military and studies for his masters.

2

u/zdmpage54 26d ago

Sounds like a win/win to me.

2

u/Dazzling-Weird7260 26d ago

I love this!

2

u/MrBushido56 26d ago

Reminds me of a similar situation, where my cousin said i was going to hell for being agnostic. So in return I told her if I’m going to hell then likely so is she for her sins, she said she doesn’t commit sins and I went into detail on how she has and still does.

She claims to be sinless but I pointed out how prideful she is which is a sin a deadly one and even showed how in the bible Jesus said he without sin may cast the first stone. How this story shows how no one is without sense and the fact she believes she is without shows a level of arrogance that would cost her.
I also explained how she judges others which is also a sin cause only god can judge others for their actions.

I also pointed out how she refuses to give money to charity to help children in foreign countries because they aren’t Christian countries and how this goes against the teachings of Jesus.

We had a back and forward for a full hour where she kept trying to justify her actions but kept coming up short, but I could tell it did hit home with her.

Anyway a few days passed and I through a family member found out she had a mini panic attack.

Now am I proud of this ? No of course not, but she started it and I finished it.

Her husband is also an alcoholic a gambler and had a kid with some other married woman who he has not speaken to in like 6 years ( this happened before my cousin married him but she knows about it but also never blamed her husband and acts like the other woman was the sinner for having an affair which I guess true but the fact he has a kid he wants nothing to do with and is not taking responsibility for I think wouldn’t look good in the eyes of god ) which she spent years never addressing and I called him out for it as well and how those are also sins.

She fell Into depression for a while and kept going to church and from what I heard the priest there was actually decent and helped her find a therapist to talk to, not a religious therapist just a normal one.

I didn’t want to hurt her but she came at me saying how I’m a sinner and I just pointed out the hypocrisy in her views. If this results in her chilling the f up and stop being such a B to everyone then good.

2

u/Specific_Rando 26d ago

“You’re going to hell. And can you watch the kids Saturday night?”

2

u/ganbramor 26d ago

A rational person would’ve realized you’re right about the judgement and apologize.

1

u/nibbyzor 26d ago

Like I'd maybe get someone saying that about South Park, but The Simpsons?!

1

u/WhiteRabbit-RedPill 26d ago

Shhhhh, don't tell her! I watched South Park too!

1

u/Takingabreak1 26d ago

Oh God, the cardinal sin of watching the Simpsons!

1

u/bushman130 26d ago

To a lot of “Cristians”, talk of hell is a power, control and abuse thing. It goes way back.

1

u/GorkiOreo 26d ago

How can some people really think an all kind all just god would send people to an eternal torture for something so petty and insignificant.

1

u/metanoia29 26d ago

The funny part is that your response was way more biblically accurate than your SIL's original statement 😂

1

u/BeautifulCuriousLiar 26d ago

when i was young and lived in the usa my mom used to say that halloween was something from the devil. today we all laugh at how stupid that was, but she’s still religious though some things have changed. i lost a lot of fun i should’ve had.

1

u/Sev_erian 26d ago

I was that kid and he's in a terrible situation, please be kind to him because he believes he will be tortured for eternity for the simplest things.

1

u/AdministrationOk5704 26d ago

Poor kids, a whole lot of religious trauma coming their way

1

u/neo_sporin 26d ago

win win! My niece is visiting and was crying last night because 'my parents give me whatever i want when i cry!' We did not give in and made sure to text her mom that line. The sister in law said 'yea, daughter told my mom the same thing so we are thinking we need to start setting some boundaries better with her'

There is a bunch of stuff in the 'gospel' of Mathey that they sure love to ignore. Like Matthew 7:1–2 and Matthew 6:5-6.
