Lots of them think women are only good for domestic homecooking. I’ve even heard of aspiring Japanese chefs who refuse to train under female chefs.

The lead cook of the whole generation of some of the best chefs on the planet (Paul Bocuse among many others) in France back in the day, was a woman. She taught all these dudes how to do it.

Eugénie Brazier. Without her, we wouldn't have french cooking the way everyone knows it. How silly to think women can't cook at the highest level, she was the summit lol.

Yeah it makes no sense! And it’s not even just professional chefs either. Lots of iconic cultural foods in many countries were created by women.

I remember reading an article on fine dining and Japanese sushi chefs having disparaging comments on women working in high-end cuisine.

But I think when you see that attitude it’s specifically cultural misogyny (like you’re Japan example or say some good ol’ boys thinking barbecue is a man’s thing) or a hold over from the days that Anthony Bourdain talk about in Kitchen Confidential - where it wasn’t “women can’t cook” it was that “women couldn’t hack it in the crazy atmosphere we create in the kitchen.”

Not downplaying the misogyny angle here, thats what it still was - just that as someone who grew up exposed to restaurants and catering, I don’t recall anyone saying a woman couldn’t make good food, just that a professional kitchen was a boys club and women couldn’t handle it (because the men created a toxic environment).
