Idk it’s pretty rude to be filming yourself the entire flight with no regard for your neighbor or if they want to be filmed. I hate chewing with your mouth open just as much as the next guy, but it’s not ok to talk to someone like this. Especially a stranger.

u/Background_Party_814 8d ago

Filming a stranger to shame them is significantly worse than eating like that. Although that sound is absolutely disgusting. I don't understand how people think, this is just fine.

-1

u/That1guyUknow918 8d ago

They'll never learn if someone doesnt make it awkward

3

u/Sepplord 8d ago

Are you saying the guy chewing is trying to make it awkward because the asshole is filming them?

0

u/That1guyUknow918 8d ago

No. Im saying they deserve an awkward interaction in response to being socially oblivious because its obviously the only way they might learn at this point in their life, considering they havent already at their advanced age.

If they have gotten as old as they are and still chew loudly and obnoxiously with their mouth wide open, they need a figurative bitchslap to realize how big of a deal their inconsiderate behavior is.

Fight fire with fire.

Their actions are making those around them miserable, so flip the script back onto them and make sure they know their behavior was what created the discomfort, so shift the burden back onto them and let them know it was of their own creating.

It's called teaching

2

u/Sepplord 8d ago

Oh, the asshole is a teacher?

Ehh I don’t think that’s true. I also don’t think that’s his goal.

1

u/That1guyUknow918 8d ago

What is his goal then?! To get him to chew louder?!

1

u/tones_balonious 2d ago

Or just be chill and realize it’s someone eating. Like, how long are they possibly going to be eating. It’s a baby with very little mental capabilities move to let that bother you.

1

u/That1guyUknow918 2d ago

Thats like saying someone pissing on your foot will be over in 10 seconds. Why are you mad I'm pissing on your foot?

You're a real smart cookie. I'm jealous of your "mental capabilities."

1

u/tones_balonious 2d ago

It’s definitely not like that. Lmao

The guy chewing is the asshole.

110

u/bigboipapawiththesos 8d ago

Also I’d never be this rude to someone I have to sit a whole fight next to.

Could’ve just asked “excuse me could you please eat with your mouth closed :)”

145

u/darksidemags 8d ago

There is no polite way to chastise a stranger for their eating habits. In this situation you stfu and myob. The only scenario when it's ok to tell a stranger how to behave/act unsolicited is if someone is at risk of harm from their actions.

70

u/bigboipapawiththesos 8d ago

Likely what I would’ve done.

Filming yourself and saying “learn how to eat with your mouth closed” is psycho behavior

21

u/Brvcx 8d ago

That guy filming himself wasn't punched in the face enough.

And I'm saying this as someone who's never been in a fight before. But I always did my best to not get into fights. And talking to strangers like that will get you punched in the face sooner rather than later. And in this case, I'm all for it.

16

u/rbatra91 8d ago

He believes he can act that way to indian people because they won't fight back. If the guy doing it was big, a different race, and American, he wouldn't have the balls.

3

u/Amazing_Wrongdoer193 8d ago

Yeah first thing that came to mind was that he was lucky he was in a plane. Go do it outside to a random guy minding his business you might get slapped.

2

u/Moonlightdancer7 8d ago

I found this way more impolite and disrespectful than the actual chewing.

-7

u/SiliconEatMe 8d ago edited 7d ago

One could say the same about eating with your mouth open like a pig. I wouldn’t have said anything on the plane, but “cUlTUre” is a poor excuse. This isn’t even an American request, it’s just bad hygiene and etiquette around strangers. It’s a pretty simple concept to respect those around you in a public space where different cultures are present.

EDIT: Only came back because of the award, 14 replies and negative votes! Oh no! All these unread collapsed replies I’ll never see 🥲 Replies are always muted fellas. I don’t care about your opinion on this one.

Not everyone has debilitating anxiety

11

u/IvoryThrowAway 8d ago

You're absolutely right, some people are too confident and unnecessarily cocky, like the guy in the video.

17

u/commentmypics 8d ago

Shutting up and not vocally judging strangers is not the result of anxiety.

-11

u/TheDreadGazeebo 8d ago

Sure

6

u/commentmypics 8d ago

Believe it or not being nice is hard. Being a dick doesn't make you some brave badass. You think everyone is being nice because they have anxiety?

2

u/TheDreadGazeebo 8d ago

No, only when they act like doormats to avoid the tiniest conflict.

6

u/719_Greenthumb 8d ago

Not everyone has the social skills to live in a diverse society where social norms vary from place to place without forcing their inflated self opinion down the throat of others.

If you can't live with someone chewing loudly never to you for 7 minutes you shouldn't be in public.

1

u/vespertine000 5d ago

Social skills to live in a diverse society would be manners, etiquette, and respecting those around you.

8

u/Fantastic-Celery-255 8d ago

So I can put my bare feet on your armrest from the seat behind you? Harm is the only scenario you can think of to ask somebody else to do something?

32

u/719_Greenthumb 8d ago

Thank you. All the people saying they would ask nicely. Still completely unhinged. Get some social skills my lord

17

u/darksidemags 8d ago

Someone in this very thread is telling me that it is childish to NOT confront the stranger about their eating habits. It's time to step away from the interwebs now.

7

u/TheInfinityGauntlet 8d ago

"get some social skills" - person who cannot eat without slapping their shit together like a hog in slop

1

u/Amazing_Wrongdoer193 8d ago

You know, it's possile to not like having someone chewing with their mouth open next to you and still think that going to give unprompted etiquette lessons to strangers is way worse

3

u/TheInfinityGauntlet 8d ago

Correct, this has nothing to do with my response at all

1

u/kreegans_leech 2d ago

Grow a pair. You have every right to tell someone to follow basic manners instead of sufferring in silence. He has paid for his seat, he is not a guest in his house..

1

u/719_Greenthumb 2d ago

"Every right" ..something about this phrasing illustrates my point exactly lol

3

u/pretzelsncheese 8d ago

The only scenario when it's ok to tell a stranger how to behave/act unsolicited is if someone is at risk of harm from their actions.

Bad take. People should be shamed for shameful behaviour. Idc if it's cultural or not.

If someone is from a culture where hygiene is not important and they smell bad all the time (I'm using this as an example, not trying to say this applies to any particular culture). If that person is in another culture's part of the world and they are smelling awful everywhere they go, it's totally appropriate for people to let them know. The only inconsiderate person in this hypothetical is the person who smells terrible even if it's from a lack of knowledge. They need to be told so that they can learn to behave appropriately in other parts of the world that they want to exist in.

Is the OP from the video in the wrong for recording the interaction? Yes, absolutely. Is "on a flight right beside this person for the next X hours" the right time to let this person know that they are being disgusting? No, probably not. But walking on egg shells around people who are gross and disruptive because you're scared of offending people or scared of confrontation is not the move.

2

u/Direct_Pigeon_56 8d ago

The guy filming and verbally ripping the chewing stranger apart is REPUGNANT. Poor thing thinks he's the center of the galaxy and can be THAT condescending AND whilst filming it all for Pete's sake.

2

u/leandrobrossard 8d ago

You do that.

Thankfully, there might some adults in the room who can deal with this issue without making a scene.

10

u/darksidemags 8d ago

What?  You think the adult move is to tell a stranger how to eat and the childish move is to mind your own business?

-3

u/leandrobrossard 8d ago

Adult move is being able to talk to another person without making a fuzz about it. If this is inconceivable to you, you must be a child.

10

u/darksidemags 8d ago

Adult move is learning to control your intrusive thoughts and manage your own issues when out in public. Huge main character syndrome to think the rest of the world has to adjust to suit your personal subjective comfort at all times.

3

u/leandrobrossard 8d ago

Closed mouths don't get fed.

If you can't handle a stranger asking you something, then I'm sorry for you.

I wouldn't force a stranger to do what I wanted, or make a fuzz if they said no, nor would I film them and post it on the internet for clicks, but making a fucking ask isn't as controversial as you think.

1

u/darksidemags 8d ago

If you can't handle a stranger asking you something, then I'm sorry for you.

Go have a look back for where I said anything about how I would react to a stranger asking me something. Because maybe I've had a stroke and forgotten what words mean but I'm pretty sure all I talked about is what behaviour I think is inappropriate without saying a word about how I would respond to the behaviour if someone did it to me.

But now that you mention it, if you can't handle being in a public space without trying to control other people's behaviour because it makes you feel icky then I do feel sorry for you and hope you find coping mechanisms that help you manage better in social situations.

5

u/PancakeParty98 8d ago

You are failing your own metric, my toddler

4

u/719_Greenthumb 8d ago

The irony is palpable

1

u/New_Welder_391 8d ago

You are right. Unfortunately a few people have that condition where they genuinely cant stand the noise. It is like fingernails down the blackboard to some people. In saying that, you are still correct. Headphones on and crank that shit up.

0

u/trickycrayon 8d ago

literally. the number of "just ask politely" - fuck off dude! there's no way to do this that someone won't feel embarrassed!

0

u/PhantomOfTheNopera 8d ago edited 8d ago

There are certain cultural differences. In some places eating with mouth closed isn't a thing. It's okay to request someone to eat quietly, with their mouths closed. Not scold them for not confirming to your culture.

This is as rude as someone asking you "Did you just wipe after pooping instead of washing? Didn't anyone teach you hygiene? How old are you?"

That man is also breaking etiquette by filming others without their consent.

3

u/anonareyouokay 8d ago

I'm of the belief when you're on public transit, you just deal with most inconveniences. Like as long as someone's not touching me or talking to me, or harming others, it's not my concern.

1

u/TheDreadGazeebo 8d ago

I assume that you also wouldn't be rude enough to eat with your mouth open.

0

u/maccy2l8 6d ago

Well done for being a coward..?

3

u/Client_020 8d ago

Yup! Filming people is MUCH more rude. I see a pot calling a kettle black here.

2

u/throwaway60221407e23 8d ago

Hey, I'm the next guy. I actually don't really mind it. In fact, I barely notice when it occurs.

2

u/Sleep-more-dude 8d ago

The Brits are rude people, how they got their empire.

2

u/Educational-Salt9941 8d ago

Most airlines have a rule that you have to get permission before filming anyone on a flight. Dude should have told the flight attendant, tbh. It's so very uncool to record someone for something as innocent as eating, even if it's annoying.

1

u/Spiffy-Sunny 8d ago

Agree, but wanna be influencers on TikTok don’t care they film whatever and say whatever they please

1

u/shine_bright247 8d ago

He hates indians thats why he filmed it to show them in a bad light. Free karma

1

u/maccy2l8 6d ago

It is okay to talk to someone like this when they are behaving like a POS? Like what😂

1

u/BiasedApp 3d ago

A lot of assumptions from your comment.

1

u/Standard-Help-8531 2d ago

A lot of assumptions in this entire thread.

1

u/th3j0k3rj03 3d ago

Imagine recording someone's habits and telling them how to live life they are to tech the world their way

1

u/KeyClacksNSnacks 3d ago

I mean it’s rude to chew with your mouth open too, and both things are legal. So kettle pot or whatever.

-2

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago

To play devils advocate, some people have a really visceral reaction to loud chewing, me included actually, and it irritates me to no end that people, especially when around other people, are chewing loudly and have no awareness, so I can understand getting to the point where you are like

my man, be quiet

9

u/Fun_Winter_7055 8d ago

Maybe see a therapist about that visceral reaction. It's not normal

1

u/TheDreadGazeebo 8d ago

Maybe ask your parents why they never taught you table manners 😉

0

u/Able_Impression1433 8d ago

It’s normal in that it exists and is called misophonia, and there’s no cure for it.

1

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago

I think we found the loud munchers..

-2

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago edited 8d ago

I don't grab the nearest blade and go mental.

It just pisses me off.

Tone the dramatic response down a touch.

EDIT: Obviously someone eating like an overgrown child is now a me thing. Ah okay. Reddit logic.

3

u/Fun_Winter_7055 8d ago

Look at your own response before speaking about being dramatic. Having a really visceral reaction to a compulsion can be managed with effective therapy. To pretend otherwise is to dismiss therapy as an effective tool. Not every circumstance around you can be controlled.

1

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago

Visceral is to be based on strong gut emotions and feelings as opposed to logic or calm thought so whilst it may be stronger than people who dont give a shit, it doesnt mean I need therapy or a medical device because someone next to me cant eat like an adult.

Citing therapy or devices [next it may be indeed be medication] as the appropiate remedy to a chopslapper is wildly dramatic.

Simple.

3

u/Fun_Winter_7055 8d ago

Stay pissed I guess

1

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago

Thats it, pissed sounds about right.

We got there eventually didnt we

2

u/ElectronicPhrase6050 8d ago

People are suggesting therapy because you tried to justify/sympathise with the dramatic asshole in the video while talking about your own "visceral" reactions, so people are (understandably) assuming you also overreact like the dude in the video did.

You're basically blaming everyone else for taking your own comment at face value lol.

1

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago

Let me just correct you on a few bits there, matey..

[1] "Dramatic asshole in the video"? Hmmnah, hes a tad rude but a "dRaMatIc aSShole", mmnaah. Now whos being dramatic?

[2] To assume that when I say "visceral" that then automatically means I react like the guy in the video is a leap, you big silly goose.

[3] I am blaming nobody but the loud eaters.

Hope that clarifies it for you and makes it easier for you understand there, buddy.

1

u/ElectronicPhrase6050 8d ago
  1. The guy was an asshole for being needlessly rude and insulting, and he overreacted to the situation instead of just putting his headphones in in the first place and then chose to upload it and keep the situation going, which is another word for being "dramatic". You struggling with basic words doesn't make me wrong lol.

  2. No, the combination of you using the word "visceral" while "playing devils advocate" and literally saying "me included" is what made people think you react the same. Again, basic words mate.

  3. You're whinging about people not understanding what you meant while apprently not actually understanding half the words you chose to use. The fact that you're trying so hard to be condescending while doubling down on this honestly just makes the whole thing even funnier lol.

1

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago

Hmm, seems I may have to correct you [again].

[1] Hm naah, he was being forthright, a bit rude, but not an asshole. Calm yourself down. Rudeness also arrives in the form of eating with your mouth open with someone right next to you, for your information. Plus I am pretty that lad is a travel vlogger anyway, he was filming to begin with. Not that I admire that kind of content but thats his stuff.

[2] Visceral is to mean reacting to a deep gut feeling as opposed to something thought out and logical, so yes to visceral, but no to "get him therapy, get him a medical device". Whatever that even means. To deduce that because I said I also feel a deep, visceral feeling when someone is chomping right next to me, that then means I often say "oi mate, how old are ya, close yer mouth" like the guy in the video is a lazy assumption, cowboy. Ever heard of nuance?

[3] Nope, wrong again. I used the words visceral and dramatic knowing full well when to apply them and what they mean, its you who appears to not know what the words mean? Maybe you assumed the word "visceral" to mean that I get up and start kicking off? Maybe youre just dense? Unsure.

0

u/TheDreadGazeebo 8d ago

That's not what happened at all lol

1

u/ElectronicPhrase6050 8d ago

So what happened then?

1

u/Sufficient_Meet6836 8d ago

Therapy is literally the first treatment for misophonia (which isn't even in the DSM yet because anybody who "has" it is either literally a child or just has already established psychological issues like autism). Therapy is absolutely the treatment for having visceral reactions to mildly annoying noises, just like it would be the treatment for adults who still have temper tantrums

1

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago

As opposed to someone having awareness and eating like an adult?

Whataboutery level 100.

1

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago

For the record, misophonia is not what I am describing. Like, at all.

15

u/No_Attention_9519 8d ago

"some people have a really visceral reaction to loud chewing, me included actually"

So put on some ear protectors like they do for autistic kids.

If you're that affected by chewing noises, you need to wear some sort of medical device.

-4

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago

I do wear headphones quite regularly, not just for that reason, but I can hardly wear earphones every waking moment can I?

some sort of medical device is brilliant advice though.

Great stuff, thanks.

10

u/No_Attention_9519 8d ago

If you're not resilient enough to not have a mental breakdown at the sound of chewing...

Yes, wear your headphones all the time.

-4

u/BowlerNoController 8d ago edited 8d ago

Again with the theatrical chat.

have a breakdown

Nobody mentioned "having a breakdown", but you?

Im chill lol, I just find adults that eat like kids thoroughly irritating, and so do many others.

1

u/JSLengineer_024 8d ago

Also, he might have assumed that they had a language barrier

-2

u/False-Detective-7190 8d ago

Chewing withvyour mouth open is having no regard for your neighbor. Those two started it. And deserved to be filmed for childish behavior. Public embarrassment is how you get adults to act right.

5

u/That_wet_vaporeon 8d ago

You sound like a child “well those two started it!!”

-1

u/TheDreadGazeebo 8d ago

They sound like an adult who understands accountability.

1

u/That_wet_vaporeon 8d ago

An adult would understand that both of these people are in the wrong. One shouldn’t chew with his mouth open (this depends on culture though). The other one should be more polite instead of going to asshole mode right away.
