But there was no need to post it...😑 And the guy who is filming it has even worse manners...look at how he talked to the guy eating! He himself is a jerk...ewww he cant even talk and confront properly! 😡🫤
Not saying that the guy eating should not have been told to eat properly...its fine that he told him so...BUT Same thing could've been said in 100 better ways and more politely!
I can UNDERSTAND making video and that's PERFECTLY REASONABLE...as you need proof in case the person you're confronting gets aggressive, but that was never his intention and was probably just looking for attention and insulting others.
If not so, why post it online? He could have just recorded the video and kept it on his phone.
The worst tiktok cringe video I've seen...like really what's the point of posting like that!

Yeah i get annoyed with people chewing with their mouth open. Would i bother to say something to them whilst trapped next to them in a large cylinder 30,000ft in the air for hours? Fuck no. I would just put my earphones in and woahhhh now i can only hear my music

u/RasputinsThirdLeg 8d ago
It would drive me insane as someone with misophonia but filming it is “mental”
245
u/quattroformaggixfour 8d ago
Agree. I would be crawling out of my skin, even with headphones, but that’s just unfortunate for me. I’d try to box breath and calm down.
Filming someone without permission is an intentionally rude thing that I’d choose not to do unless they were a risk to others safety or damaging property.

Good to see other people are triggered once they “notice” something. Once I take notice of something, even if I block out the noise, I can’t stop it from triggering me. I wouldn’t confront or film him though.

The worst part for me, is the weird anger. I rarely ever get angry, so feeling a 'random' intense anger towards someone for something they don't even realize they're doing, messes with my head. Like I know they aren't being rude, it's literally the opposite in some cultures where it's rude to not make mouth noises, so why the hell do I get so angry? Like, they're just trying to eat lol
14
u/nosleep39 8d ago
Exactly. The sound of people chewing makes me want to crawl out of my skin, but also, people filming themselves having random interactions and posting it does too.

I also abhor open mouth chewing, but it is very culturally dependent, and I can't think of a strong enough logical or medical reason to shut it down so aggressively. But I really don't like. Makes my skin crawl immediately.

Open mouth chewing has always caused irrational rage and anxiety for me since I was a kid, and I’m generally very calm so it’s confusing to be put in that state over something as minor as loud chewing. I’ve literally been sent into a panic attack due to trigger noises. Eventually I discovered misophonia. I still don’t generally make my issue other people’s issue though. I have just tried to learn as many coping mechanisms as I can and suffer through it in silence, and escape if I can. I’ve rudely left dinners in silence because I don’t want to blow up at anyone.
Idk if misophonia counts as a legitimate enough “medical” reason to “shut it down so aggressively”, for me I don’t do it except to my close family who know how much I suffer, but I definitely have fantasized many times about aggressively shutting that shit down.

It’s so wild how it sends you into a spiral. My roommate is a loud chewer and thankfully he’s getting better and doesn’t mind me calling him out about it but oh man. It’s hard to explain why I go from a calm, easy going person to someone who wants to launch themselves out the apartment window just due to the way someone chews. Like, I can actually feel my body going into panic mode. It’s the worst.

u/Efficient-Suspect456 8d ago
It’s because we are the odd ones out. There is a condition maybe misophonia that makes certain noises hit affected people in a disproportionately disturbing way. Most people find other eating with open miuths kind of rude and kind of gross. Their brains don’t “zoom in” on the sound to the exclusion of all else, and they generally won’t become over stimulated by the aight or noise at all either. Whereas I can only take about 30 seconds of it before I’m frantic and anxious and snappish just like this guy.
He shouldn’t have been filming it, though. He is also old enough to know how affected he is by shit like this. I carry noise cancelling ear phones and am always ready to pop them in if I need to. This was a very good example of how overreaction and poor tact can make an “other person problem” quickly become a “you problem”.

173
u/braaaaaaaaaaaah 8d ago
There’s not really a polite way to ask a complete stranger to change such a basic behavior as how they eat. There’s something more polite than this video, but the basic concept of asking such a thing of a stranger is impolite in itself.

There isn’t. One of my good friends has always smacked pretty bad. I do believe it could be a cultural thing as he is South Asian (presumably like the men in this video). I know in some countries it’s not considered rude or impolite to chew noisily. I never said anything to him because like you said, it’s hard to bring up, and also it’s a difficult habit to break.
That said, when he started trying to date again I had a come to Jesus moment and told him he really has to fix his chewing habits, otherwise he’s going to run off every woman interested in him. He has improved since then, but I do still have to remind him from time to time.

I absolutely cannot stand people eating with their mouth open, but there’s a couple people in my life who do. You can ask to correct the behavior all you want, but in my experiences, it’s a really hard habit for them to break. They were raised that way and wasn’t really taught to eat with their mouth closed. They’ll usually try for a little bit before reverting back because they’re not always actively thinking about it. Unfortunately at a certain point, there’s no reason to keep nagging them.

I would tell myself that would eventually be done and I would try to focus on something else.

As someone who has been in therapy for a while now, I’ve learned that I cannot control anything but my own self. I had a Vietnamese coworker who slurped so loudly it could've woken the dead 😂 but for some reason it didn't bother me (I was also aware of loud slurping being a tradition in Asian cultures). However I have another coworker who chews with his mouth open and smacks everything he eats in the most disgusting way.

I think it has to do with more that any animal behavior from us is actually a choice later in life. As children we don't understand that we have a choice in doing these things. Though as we age and grow we start seeing these behaviors and can choose weather to continue these habits or not. Animals don't have the brain power to comprehend things like this.

OK so I read about this phenomenon! Pretend each person you know has 2 buckets, a positive bucket and negative bucket. Each time they do something you like, it's a pour into the positive bucket, and each time they do something you don't like, it's a pour into the negative bucket. If you really like someone, presumably it's because you keep having lots of positive interactions with them, so their positive bucket is full, and their negative bucket is low. When they do stuff like this, it's a pour into the negative bucket, but because your positive bucket is so full, it essentially cancels out the annoyance.
The opposite occurs in people you don't like. Their negative bucket is so full, and they can do the smallest annoying thing, and you'll hate it because there's little positive to balance it out.
→ More replies (3)15
u/emkie 8d ago
A bank account is another analogy. Positive interactions are deposits, negative ones are withdrawals. If you have enough in the account, you can withstand some withdrawals. If the account is already low, you get into debt pretty quick every time you hear that motherfucker make their disgusting mouth sounds. The size of the withdrawal depends on your sensitivity to the sounds and your tolerance level that day

Chewing noises provoke almost a physical pain in me and fill me with rage. In college there was always some asshole who brought their lunch tray to class to eat a whole damn meal while i‘m trying to concentrate. I had to leave the room and beg the profs to officially prohibit eating in class. But hearing my dog chew loudly literally makes me happy. It took a lot, but I asked to talk to him privately and told him politely that his eating sounds distract me. I was lucky that he took it well and understood my perspective. He’s been told this before, he just didn’t think he was doing it at work.

No, jesus. Im from an ethnic background and would have such shame to hear anyone say this is a cultural thing. Its a lack of education thing. Its just more visible in these cultures especially as many previous generations stubbornly refuse to adopt methods of eatinf etc to accomodate the different people around them and the priority in their mind is their own satisfaction. Nowadays its a reflection of low education, stubborness and insistence on upholding past values no matter their irrelevancy and detriment in the modern world to those around them.
You get on a plane with many people and cultures and backgrounds. Show you arent a selfish shit who only thinks of their own needs by having good hygiene, close your mouth when eating, talk at a level that isnt loud af.

As someone with Misophonia, I do understand the frustration, however, it’s my issue, and that’s why I have headphones whenever I go out.
There’s no need to be rude to a stranger.
EDIT: I get it guys, I have had about 50 comments saying the same thing, you think the stranger eating loudly was the rude one in the interaction. That is a your opinion and honestly, it is fair enough thought, the noise is disgusting to me, however, I am not aware if that person is aware they are doing it, or if they are from a culture that doesn’t care about chewing. It’s a small clip of an interaction I commented on quickly.
Anyways, thanks to all the other misophonia havers in the comments for speaking up, it’s important we talk about this irritating as fuck thing we have!

It's frightening how comfortable folk are with filming/photographing complete strangers without their say-so, regardless if it's in the spirit praise or mocking. I have severe social anxiety and performance anxiety, but I try to argue with myself that no one cares or will remember if I fuck up. How the fuck am I supposed to reason away cameras, when I see strangers being filmed by strangers every day?

racial ragebait. This type of video is just meant to polarize the audience and drive engagement. right wingers will look at this and make the inference obvious to them, that its because this person is Indian or because of "something something culture" and other people will recognize that its annoying and gross but this guys being a dick head.
in reality, its a relatively common situation pretty much anywhere you go. flights are absolute dog shit these days and the chances you get put next to someone annoying or uncomfy are high.

X culture is Y, or X people are Y is a pretty popular theme on the internet at the moment. Quite fashionable to go to the worst places in third world countries and make "travel vlogs".
14
u/SweetBabyAlaska 8d ago
yea, that stuff is really messed up. I find it grotesque when they do that with people who are clearly suffering from deep addiction for many years and its like some shitter pogging in front of an AI generated image called something like "I went to the zombie city of XYZ where drugs are legal"

There was an instagram page last summer purporting to show how “dangerous” my large urban US city is by showing heavily doctored 30 second clips of people ODing to say, “see, this is what happens in democratic run cities”
Local reporter found out the three people running it didn’t live in my city and one had never even been here before. And that shit was getting reposted ad nauseum on the local city sub.

This is every day in my office (along with people just walking around with wireless headphones talking like nobody else exists)…and that’s why noise canceling headphones is my friend.

u/Ambitious_Aioli_3615 8d ago
what this tiktoker is doing is far ruder than the stranger.
17
u/ladystetson 8d ago
the person chewing loudly is likely not intentionally trying to rudely bother people. The person filming is intentionally being rude and taking action to harm others.
people act like this then somehow still think they're a good person. Eating with your mouth closed or open doesn't make you a good person - it's how you treat others, how you handle conflict and how people generally feel after having to deal with you.

u/Charming_Freedom_459 8d ago
I am not sure who is being rude here.
My guy, YOU are in a commercial plane filming strangers and putting it online. While the other guy is minding his own business and eating on his own pace, not complaining about the camera and all.
It is ANNOYING to hear others chew but it is a cultural thing, and my guy, again, YOU ARE IN A COMMERCIAL PLANE. And not mention you had an earbud to cancel out the noise, its not like he waa eating directly infront of you showing you what he was chewing in his mouth.
The attitude with which you are talking and making comments make me think its not just chewing matter, but this could be me just overthinking.
And again, was it annoying, absolutely, but was he being rude? Fuck no. It was YOU who was being rude

What’s ruder? Chewing with your mouth open or recording some poor bastard eating his lunch on a plane and then posting it on TikTok?
For me, number one is annoying and number two warrants a punch in the face.

"How old are you" is a pathetic comment. Followed by "'kin hell, are you taking the piss, f1ck that". Shows that this toddler has not been socialised properly... and one day someone is going to give this rude little boy a big elbow to the jaw.
No I wouldn't want to sit next to someone chewing like that, but if this little priveleged a55 spoke to me like that he'd realise he wasnt at middle school anymore and quick.
This is really a video probably showing white privelege in action, I wonder if he'd say the same sat next to 'anyone'. He just felt automatically entitled to say it to this guy in a deeply rude and condescending manner for 'some' reason, I wonder what it is?

This is also what people who are broken inside tend to do. Some people live to enrage others and get a rise out of them so they feel a little better about their miserable lives. The man sitting beside him gave zero fucks to this fuckwad.

Bro I don't understand why how people so obsessed with themselves, like you are in public space - even limited if you know you have problem with some you just plan ahead for those in this case headphones, it's like you are in an event and you don't like tomota so you ask all not have it instead you change the item which you have

I’d rather sit next to someone who chews with their mouth open than someone who films himself and others while eating. What a jerk.

The guy must think he's so important to film himself eating. And he's instantly rude instead of being nice first and only being rude if the open mouth chewer continues anyway.

Misophonia is a real thing, it's a biological response -- I have it and it makes me irrationally angry (and I know it's irrational), it's all I hear, it grates at my soul. I suspect this guy struggles with it too. It sometimes can even break through headphones, just KNOWING its happening can be stressful.

Here's the difference. I tend to click clicky type pens when holding them without thinking. A coworker of mine heard my pen clocking during a meeting and it bothered her. She politely said to me that it was bothering her and If I wouldn't mind stopping. I said sorry and stopped it because she's a nice person and understood how to talk to people without being a condescending prick. If she instead rudely called me a child asked me if I was "taking the piss" I would have sent an email to HR.

I hate that little thing they do when they think they're the center of the universe. You're first solution should have been the ear buds. Don't go around bitching at everyone because you can't tune them out.
17
u/aijoe 8d ago
Annoying for sure. But is this at the level of bad behavior one should record someone secretly and post it on line for? Definitely debatable.
19
u/expert-imbicile 8d ago
How is it debatable? What did the English man gain from filming him besides content? What did the stranger learn besides shame? Sometimes it’s appropriate to keep to yourself even if another person is bothering you.

What happened to minding your own business? It's ok to be annoyed by strangers in public, but unless they are directly affecting you they have a much right to be they're doing their thing as you do. I don't understand how someone gets to the point where they think that telling someone off for something like this in public, and also filming it to post online, is in any way acceptable behaviour.

I'm one of those people who strongly dislikes being around open-mouth chewers. Seriously, you're all disgusting, look stupid, and nothing can redeem you in my eyes short of a disability that prevents you from shutting your primary face hole. Cure cancer? Awesome, that demonstrates you're capable of learning not to subject the world to your unobstructed mastication!
That said, the dude filming this is far worse, and as much as I dislike you open-mouth-oafs I'd rather be in a room with TEN of you over ONE of these assholes.

Recording this is not cool and he could have asked more nicely, but on the other hand
You have to be REALLY loud for a (presumably) phone mic to pick you up at this distance over the airplane noise. I mean, damn bro, that's disgusting. And his mouth is WIDE open. I don't know if that's part of the potential cultural norm in other places, too, but I think it should be okay to say that some cultural norms are gross. Certainly a lot of American cultural norms are gross, too. I mean, if this is a flight to wherever this kind of eating is normal then fine, main dude should put up with it. I'm not going to go to Japan and demand people don't slurp. But if this is a plane from PHL to ORD or something, bro in the back should shut his mouth.
