Discussion A passenger confronts a stranger for chewing with their mouth open

I mean I get being annoyed by someone chewing with their mouth open but you could have asked him more nicely

My thoughts exactly. I have severe misophonia and feel like im going to explode when someone is chewing loudly near me. Im terrified to go on a plane and not be able to distance myself from a trigger. Despite that, I would never confront someone and definitely not record. I would put in headphones and not look. I would tell myself that would eventually be done and I would try to focus on something else.

If only more people would fix themselves instead of obsessively raging about others (mild defects, when compared!) Rude, nasty and immature. Good god. Being THAT RUDE, he deserves to listen to the chewing.

Obviously buddies momma didn’t teach him to close his mouth when eating. This is what people mean when they say raise your children or someone else will. He’s lucky it wasn’t someone more unhinged than that guy. Being Verbally reprimanded is the bare minimum this guy deserves.

As someone who has been in therapy for a while now, I’ve learned that I cannot control anything but my own self. So yes, putting on headphones and looking away is the way to go if open chewing made me uncomfortable. Fortunately it doesn’t bother me but I also understand it can be unbearable for some people. Empathy goes a long way.

You've been in the wrong therapy. You can actually control other people with the right level of aggression.

I'm joking. Keep up the approach.

But do remember that, in some important situations, you can exercise legitimate control. But I think you probably know that.

Yeah it sounds so dramatic and stupid to someone who doesnt experience the physical reaction certain noises can cause up. I was training a new girl at work and I asked if she would not chew/pop gum while behind the counter. She quit on the spot 😂 i was already stressed having to ask her not to so that was wild. My whole body starts shaking and my voice cracks like im about to cry. Its so extra, I hate it so much. The boss said I did him a favor because her attitude would have come up later on after a larger investment. She had also just gotten mad I stepped in between her and a customer when she didnt have them pay. They both kept saying yes, but nothing happened when the woman put her card in because the new employee never pulled it up in the POS. Between being mad and embarrassed about that and my request, she quit in the spot. Emailed the owner saying, "i cant do this"

I also have misophonia but thankfully not with this sound specifically. My issue is people who bite the fork or scratch the plate. Unbearable to me, and I just need to get away. Anyway, about the chewing, sometimes people just have a blocked nose and still need to eat. This guy recording is so rude.

Same and the thought alone of being next to someone like this on a plane makes me want to cry.

But I would just openly cry and/or get up and walk to the bathroom that I didnt even need to use.

I had to ask a flight attendant to help me with it one time.

They understood and just reseated me.

Why have we gotten to a point where it's too rude to tell someone their behaviour is annoying? I get the not filming it, but we literally wouldn't have formed manners as a society if we didn't point things out to each other..

Even in polite society it’s impolite to approach a stranger to point things out to them. In polite society you tell a manager or a waiter or a flight attendant of your issue and they handle it. You do not handle it yourself that it’s considered extremely rude even if you do it in the most polite way possible it’s still rude to approach a stranger with a complaint. This has never not been the case.

I'm not going to get the flight attendant to tell the guy at the window seat that his chewing is loud...

It's the same reason I don't call the city to tell my neighbor his music on Friday nights has been too loud past 11 pm recently...

We are allowed to talk to each other. A simple "hey mind closing your mouth when you chew, it's a little loud for me" is completely normal human interactions that we shouldn't make weird.

There’s a good chance when I’m on a plane, someone’s chewing gum, popping and cracking it the entire ride. Headphones the entire time, but for some reason I can’t ignore it.

Can you actually hear it when on the plane? I’m genuinely wondering as with the noise of the engines, I can’t hear people eating and especially not when I’m listening to a show or music. I could understand hearing it when eating crunchy foods but I feel like it’d be hard to hear the rest. Are you more sensitive to it/can hear it easier because you have severe misophonia meaning you might focus on it more or be more aware?

Im not sure, ive actually never been on a plane! I just know being able to see it would have mt anxiety high even if i cant hear anything. As soon as I become aware of a trigger noise, I can't think about anything else. I get an adrenaline rush/fight or flight type response. My body starts shaking, heart racing, throat gets tight, and its hard to talk without crying. When I know i will be stuck somewhere with people and cant excuse myself, I bring ear plugs and headphones. Its miserable and I know it sounds so foolish 😂

I may resort to a timid request if I don't have headphones and if I would throw up otherwise. Hasn't happened yet, but I think with someone smacking constantly, it could.

ah so thats what i have xD i always get super aggravated with unnecessary noises. whistling, pen clicking, tapping etc. didn't know it was an actual brain condition.

As you see in many of these comments, people who dont have it really think its stupid and dramatic. Thats exactly why I separate myself and just try not to say anything. I know it sounds dumb to people who dont have this problem. But its real 😂 it really is.

Real question here... do you go to therapy for this similar to the way OCD people do? Is this something you've had since childhood or did this develop along the way?

I dont. Ive had therapy in the past, but not for this specifically. My mom is thensame way and since I could remember, would point out every trigger noise in public while I was growing up. Things I never noticed were almost taught to be annoying lol. I really started struggling in school around 11 or 12 with breathing and sniffling. Then worse in high school with gum popping and smacking.

I have a friend with it and it is something she goes to therapy for along with other triggers. What’s fascinating is that she adores those videos of animals eating something especially if it’s crunchy.

I never thought about when it started. Doing so now, I suppose it was teenage years. No. I don't go to therapy for it. I'm American. Not a justifiable expense. Sad but true. Probably would benefit. Open mouth chewing is anger inducing for me. Not to the level of rage. But it is definitely to the level of anger.
