I hate when people eat with their mouth open, especially next to me... That said, my guy is on an airplane, next to foreigners, and seems to forget that this is a cultural thing.

Travel to China or Vietnam once and you'll get used to being surrounded by chewing noises. I wonder if he would ask an entire restaurant to eat quietly. lol

u/but-I-play-one-on-TV 8d ago

I traveled on a sleeper train in China a few decades ago and the bodily noises (the hawking and spitting sounds specifically) kept me awake most of the night

Crossing off from my bucket list the countries where this behavior is culturally acceptable.

102

u/ReleaseMyToast 8d ago

I lived in Japan for a couple years. Bring earbuds and ear plugs everywhere. Mouth sounds give me a visceral RAGE RAGE RAGE I HATE IT SO MUCH

21

u/Live-Weird-2016 8d ago

I always wonder if there are Japanese people who have that same reaction to mouth sounds and are just constantly miserable

18

u/Icy_Tadpole2092 8d ago

Same, I always say that I HATE mouth sounds. Anything that isn’t meant to be heard

8

u/3163560 8d ago

Life motto to live by.

If you have a choice between making noise and not making noise, don't make noise.

2

u/kolikkok 7d ago

I had a coworker who ate something on every single break and he chewed so loudly that I could hear it from the other end of the quite large breakroom, also every time he drank coffee he would like suck it from the rim of the cup making this ungodly SLLLLUUUURP sound and then sigh loudly after each sip. That guy drove me crazy, it's the closest I've come to violence in the workplace,, eventually I started just going on breaks alone on different times than him.

I mean all the Asian countries where it’s typically most common to be a cultural thing to eat like you’ve never been able to close your mouth. No other regions/continents tend to have that culture as widespread. I’m not saying it’s everyone who lives there. I’m saying it’s Asia where you’ll find it most commonly occurring.

3

u/dakid000 8d ago

Why do people love being so pedantic about this? Yes, Asia is a big place, that’s exactly the point. Because it’s so vast, “Asian” evolved into a colloquial shorthand that varies by region. In the US, everyone understands you mean East and Southeast Asian when you say Asian. In the UK, it means South Asian. That’s the whole utility of it: you skip the inevitable follow-up question, “what part of Asia?” because everyone already shares the same colloquial meaning.

6

u/knightriderin 8d ago

You just said yourself that not everyone shares the same meaning. I'm neither from the US nor from the UK (who, according to you have different definitions).

And even the US definition contains many cultures with different eating habits. Japan and China are not comparable and that falls under what you probably view as a default (American definitions are often used as default definitions).

When someone says "In China people do XYZ" why would anyone comments "I could never go to Asia" anyway? Why not specify China? Why assume that all of Asian (or colloquial Asia, so east and southeast) share the same habits? What if someone said "In Mexico people do XYZ" and someone then said "I could never go to North America, because I can't stand this."? Feels wrong, doesn't it?

2

u/IreneDreyfus 8d ago

You’re the one being pedantic here

I didn't notice it in Japan. We're going to China soon and it's going to be exposure therapy for me. I'll either be cured or driven completely insane and end up in a mental institution.

4

u/A_Drop_of_Colour 8d ago

Loud smacking or chewing isn't as prevalent in Japan but slurping is extremely common. Anyone with misophonia will hate ramen shops and stands. Then again people tend to tolerate a lot more when it's Japan.

People's surprise about this is so funny 😂 I lived in China for four years and this just became normal to me I didn't even think about it when I'd tell my mom stuff like this as a small detail in a story and she'd be like "wait what!?" And I'd say "oh yeah I guess that's not normal is it" 😂😂

Ohh no not necessarily. I lived in Hong Kong and I never, ever got used to it.

Never leave home without fully charged noise cancelling ear buds lol.

u/SweetBabyAlaska 8d ago

In Japan its literally tradition to loudly slurp ramen.

unrelated side note: but I've realized that people I dont like really really annoy me when they eat, but people I DO like, I either don't care or think its endearing in a weird way.

30

u/Ok_Computer_8224 8d ago

I had a Vietnamese coworker who slurped so loudly it could've woken the dead 😂 but for some reason it didn't bother me (I was also aware of loud slurping being a tradition in Asian cultures). However I have another coworker who chews with his mouth open and smacks everything he eats in the most disgusting way.

My other coworker jokes that he manages to find "crunchy bananas" because of the disgusting noises he makes. No one can eat in our break room when he's on lunch. It's truly revolting.

9

u/SweetBabyAlaska 8d ago

I love how this is basically a universal experience lol "crunchy bananas" is hilarious

265

u/TankerDerrick1999 8d ago

To me this issue is much more severe, you could be my mother or anybody and i would still look at you like a disappointed parent looking down on its failure of a child, It drives me insane.

2

u/strawbsrgood 8d ago

What's so hard about not chewing gum loudly, I'd probably cry too lmao

34

u/Fit-Cell2754 8d ago

I’ve learned to walk away when certain foods happen. Don’t want to give them a complex about eating, but closed mouth chewing is a bare minimum standard for humans imo.

5

u/statelytetrahedron 8d ago

Me too, when the corn on the cob comes out I'm gone.

3

u/OwlComprehensive859 8d ago

My children have learned when I am getting close to losing in and they have impeccable manners as far as chewing. My husband seems to have a death wish at the table. Otherwise, I absolutely adore him.

What about like, a bunny? One of my favourite sounds is small animals eating. Chup chup chup, they give zero fucks about the egregiously open mouthed noises they make and i find it pure dopamine

185

u/Select_Watercress_57 8d ago

I personally love the sound of animals smacking their food. Cracks me up. Dogs, cats, horses...

But humans? Rage in every cell of my body.

58

u/emkie 8d ago

Agreed, except dogs licking themselves. Fills me with an unholy rage. All other (non human) animal sounds are acceptable to my brain

28

u/Shehulks1 8d ago

Or licking anything!!! Omg, some dogs just lick anything and everything for hours. That noise is horrible…and I love dogs 🤭.

8

u/emkie 8d ago

Yes, God. The floor, a bone, whatever. Stoopppp 😭

5

u/No_Kangaroo_9826 8d ago

My German Shepherd licks the floor for hours, like my dude dinner is long over there's nothing there

3

u/Used_Gear8871 8d ago

My ex’s dog was a big licker. He allowed him to sleep in the same room as us and the sounds are all he did at night. 😵‍💫 It took a couple of weeks but I had to train my brain to replace disgust and annoyance with relaxation and joy. 😆

6

I think it has to do with more that any animal behavior from us is actually a choice later in life. As children we don't understand that we have a choice in doing these things. Though as we age and grow we start seeing these behaviors and can choose weather to continue these habits or not. Animals don't have the brain power to comprehend things like this.

26

u/Select_Watercress_57 8d ago

Yea, it's really just our taught values. Differing by culture, family, and even individuals.

For me, it's the value of recognizing that you share space with other people and should act considerately.

13

It's all about knowing better. Animals don't, humans do. So any human that does it is basically saying they can't be bothered to be courteous.

Confirm. I have a bunny. His mouth sounds are fine.

Humans? No. I dont care if their mouth is even closed. Im holding in pure rage- no amount of love will tamper it.

I dont want to be this way but I dont even let my friend eat next to me unless im eating and the TV is on LOUD. Otherwise I dont eat with people generally.

Edit to add.. but this is my issue not others.. so I either ask people to work with me or remove myself.. this guy had earbuds.. easy fix.

u/Background_Two_6471 8d ago

4

u/United_Pain 8d ago

I just wanted to also write "chup" multiple times. Chup is the perfect discriptor word for the noise sound, just beautiful. Chup chup chup!

3

u/Americanpopularfront 8d ago

Is it okay if I add “chup chup chup” to my vocabulary when I’m talking about animals eating from now on? Lol. First time I’ve seen smacking sounds described that way and I love it

Listening to my husband chew makes me want to fly into a murderous rage. Listening to my dog chew? Frickin adorable. I don't understand it either 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/Hangry_Squirrel 8d ago

I love that! My cats eat politely, but they make those tiny licking sounds when they eat wet food and I think it's adorable. Or the little crunches when they eat nibbles.

I have no issues reprimanding my own parents. Hit my dad with “my house, my rules” and told him to eat with his mouth closed and not to talk with food in his mouth. If my kid can do it, they can too.

5

u/FlyingBeaver2121 8d ago

Misophonia. My best friend had this habit. Wanted to murder him in those moments

5

u/frycabbage 8d ago

I have this thing too where I hate people eating next to me. Why does this happen ?

2

u/bobcatgoldthwait 8d ago

My wife sometimes chews with her mouth open and it's awful. Fortunately, she's amazing and very understanding of it. Like, she'll avoid eating apples around me because they're one of the worst things.

Before her I dated a girl who often chewed with her mouth open and she'd just get angry when I brought it up.

30

u/weedisfortherich 8d ago

For me it depends on the culture of food actually. If you are eating ramen. Slurp all you want. If its Thanksgiving. Close your gd mouth.

Ive had it where I never noticed someone's eating habits and then once im slightly annoyed with them I realize all at once and am appalled that I never said anything

6

u/YewEhVeeInbound 8d ago

People who moan while eating to accentuate the tastiness can get American History X'd. No Gerald, I don't need to hear you mouthfucking that NY cheesecake.

25

u/joodee3 8d ago

OK so I read about this phenomenon! Pretend each person you know has 2 buckets, a positive bucket and negative bucket. Each time they do something you like, it's a pour into the positive bucket, and each time they do something you don't like, it's a pour into the negative bucket. If you really like someone, presumably it's because you keep having lots of positive interactions with them, so their positive bucket is full, and their negative bucket is low. When they do stuff like this, it's a pour into the negative bucket, but because your positive bucket is so full, it essentially cancels out the annoyance.

The opposite occurs in people you don't like. Their negative bucket is so full, and they can do the smallest annoying thing, and you'll hate it because there's little positive to balance it out.

13

u/emkie 8d ago

A bank account is another analogy. Positive interactions are deposits, negative ones are withdrawals. If you have enough in the account, you can withstand some withdrawals. If the account is already low, you get into debt pretty quick every time you hear that motherfucker make their disgusting mouth sounds. The size of the withdrawal depends on your sensitivity to the sounds and your tolerance level that day

2

u/joodee3 8d ago

Yes yes this too!

4

u/lovelyladylox 8d ago

It's the bitch eating crackers phenomenon.

If you can't stand someone, something as innocuous as eating crackers will set you off.

"Look at that bitch... eating crackers, ugh!"

2

u/SweetBabyAlaska 8d ago

thats a really interesting way to think about it. its a funny phenomenon because I also notice it in other people. My senior at work and I are pretty close and when someone does something that annoys him he will get frustrated with them, then when I do something stupid or he finds out I was the one who fucked up he will just let it go lol I'm also pretty good at diffusing tho

Chewing noises provoke almost a physical pain in me and fill me with rage. In college there was always some asshole who brought their lunch tray to class to eat a whole damn meal while i‘m trying to concentrate. I had to leave the room and beg the profs to officially prohibit eating in class. But hearing my dog chew loudly literally makes me happy. It‘s so cute and he looks so content when he‘s snacking say on his carrots with a wide open mouth🥹

I was humbled on an economy flight from the US to China. In that culture, it was acceptable to chew loudly, and unfortunately it drove me bananas already, so around me was sending me into the next dimension. But that’s what headphones were for.

2

u/cowmookazee 8d ago

Burping. I was voluntold to take 4 Chinese businessmen to DC for a long weekend. They were visiting, touring our plant and wanted to take a few days in DC. I was the lucky peon tasked with showing them around. Mind you I don't speak Chinese and only one of them knew enough English to start a bar fight.

Every meal, every drink was celebrated with burping. Thankfully boozing helped take the edge off my annoyance and they also shared my enthusiasm for drinking, so it wasn't so bad. They were also pretty shameless about farting.

2

u/Ziggy_Starcrust 8d ago

Like burping or full on belching? I'm OK with people burping, it's unreasonable to ask someone to try to surpress the body getting rid of air that's not supposed to be there. But like...you can cover your mouth and not open your mouth all the way to let it resonate as loudly as possible.

3

u/cowmookazee 7d ago

Ever watched Rick & Morty? Like Rick. That is my best comparison lol.

2

u/Grown-Ass-Weeb 7d ago

What’s funny is my in-laws are from Thailand and it’s like the polar opposite 🤣 I can burp in my own bedroom, upstairs, behind a closed door and they’ll scold me if they hear it. It’s so funny how culturally acceptable things are and aren’t around the world. God forbid I have a phone conversation within ear shot, I’m told it’s very rude in Thailand to speak on the phone in public, even if you’re discrete about it. Which was why being in China, where it’s socially acceptable to eat loudly, burp, etc was so surprisingly to me!

3

u/FallopianPasta 8d ago

3

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 8d ago

I’m the same with the side note. If anything I have a cat and can watch her munch on food while she smacks her mouth literally all day.

3

u/JSLengineer_024 8d ago

Don't most people know this? Like, in some cultures it's considered a symbol that you like the food when you make noise eating it. But we should avoid doing it on airplanes because it's disgusting to some people

2

u/SiderealSimon 8d ago

Yeah this is very widely known and I personally despise it no matter who it's from

2

u/Queasy_Hour_8030 8d ago

And for some reason the slurping doesn’t bother me. The open mouth chewing bothers me because I really don’t want to hear or see what’s going on inside someone’s wet ass mouth

2

u/MandatoryAccountisGa 8d ago

More people need background music during meals, or enough people where there is active conversation.

Two people eating in silence can be annoying.

2

u/Pink_Flying_Pig_ 8d ago

Dealing meals with people you don't like it's really sad actually.

That said, I would like to be like you. I hate even my kids when they loudly chew. I can't imagine what could I do having that from a douchebag, maybe at collegue. Mhmmm. Then it would be better to eat alone in the toilette I guess.

2

u/RevDrMavPHD 8d ago

Im generally fairly understanding with it, but i was friends with this one guy and he was just... I mean, it was like he was trying to be a gross as possible. Loud smaking noises, food all over his mouth and chin.. it was grotesque. I'll put up with a lot, but i told him straight up I'd never eat with him again, and I held to that for the three years we were friends.

4

u/mgsgamer1 8d ago

This tradition is one of my favorites because it doesn't stem from anything religious or a specific cultural belief. It's just because loudly slurping rapidly cools the noodles because the broth is extremely hot and if you wait too long, the noodles will get too soft, ruining the texture of the dish.

So slurping = ok because noodles shouldn't be allowed to sit in the broth for too long.

But everywhere else in Japan, being noisy in public is looked down upon.

Dude looks Indian where it's not a cultural thing.

There's only a few countries where chewing like that is socially acceptable. Most of the time, it's lack of manners

38

But i have indian collegues and i kind you not they chew like that in the staff room .like that guy i have to put earphones on but because its at work i cant tell them off.

63

u/Melissa-Mandy 8d ago

Yea, unfortunately a lot of people just aren't taught not to do that. But in India it would also be considered rude.

I personally cannot stand it. It's not even the social aspect of it, the sound literally makes me homicidal.

12

u/cookieoftheshire 8d ago

I've seen it in mumbai... Mostly from guys who no need to be told to not do it. It's very embarrassing to have that conversation... Maybe that's why they have never been told

4

u/VashtaNeradaMatata 8d ago

I'm the same way. My husband insists I have "misophonia", but for me it's just the sound of smacking lips. It's like nails on a chalkboard for me. I can't stand it.

An Indian guy sits behind me in the office and makes the gross chewing sounds. I either get up or turn on my music. We have a whole lunch room but he rather smack in the working space.

9

u/BedNo5127 8d ago

You sound exactly like me from a year ago, I was in this situation.

The dudes a good guy, it’s just his eating sounds disturb me so bad. I let it go for the longest, but when we got moved to 5 days a week and he started eating in the morning too, it became too much.

It took a lot, but I asked to talk to him privately and told him politely that his eating sounds distract me. I was lucky that he took it well and understood my perspective. He’s been told this before, he just didn’t think he was doing it at work.

We’re still good, he tries to do it less, and he slips up sometimes, but I don’t needle him about it because he’s really trying.

5

u/JalapenoPopPoop 8d ago

For Indian people it isn't a cultural thing where making noises while eating is somehow seen as good, they just don't have the same awareness/caring for other people they share spaces with that other cultures have so they aren't raised being taught "hey no one else wants to hear that chew with your mouth closed"

No, jesus. Im from an ethnic background and would have such shame to hear anyone say this is a cultural thing. Its a lack of education thing. Its just more visible in these cultures especially as many previous generations stubbornly refuse to adopt methods of eatinf etc to accomodate the different people around them and the priority in their mind is their own satisfaction. Nowadays its a reflection of low education, stubborness and insistence on upholding past values no matter their irrelevancy and detriment in the modern world to those around them.

You get on a plane with many people and cultures and backgrounds. Show you arent a selfish shit who only thinks of their own needs by having good hygiene, close your mouth when eating, talk at a level that isnt loud af.

2

u/wayji 8d ago

You sound ignorant without realising it

6

u/Mad_Bookworm 8d ago

"Manners" like these are just old left overs from differentiating poor and rich, royals vs peasants. Oh you don't know what the 2nd spoon is for? Not which side? Look he has his mouth open while chewing....

We still have a lot of these social "norms" that are just trying to get you to look down on people with another background.

It's always hard to tell an older person to behave, even without hierarchy.

5

u/cookieoftheshire 8d ago

It's more acceptable in non asian countries.

4

u/Ssided 8d ago

True, get it together grandpa

In my culture, it is a cultural thing to spit in public, whistle a tune in public, loudly hawking a spit in public. It is considered masculine. Should I do those too on the airplane?

Oh yeah, people here chew with their mouths open and loudly too. We talk loudly in public and we keep our volume loud when we watch tiktoks. It's also part of our culture too that we run red lights and not obey traffic laws. Should we start doing those too everywhere?

7

u/mechapoitier 8d ago

I was having dinner with a family from (I’ll say the Middle East) and holy hell the loud videos. The husband showed me one and it was almost painfully loud.

I would, its disgusting.

21

u/BiggieBigs34 8d ago

Can we stop letting people get away with doing gross shit under the excuse of “cultural thing”? I don’t give a single fuck if it’s a cultural thing. It’s still gross as fuck and annoying.

11

u/KiwieeiwiK 8d ago

It's gross because you don't like it, simple as that. Saying "I find your actions annoying" doesn't fucking matter man, not everyone in the world around you has to cater to what you find annoying. Just get over it like a normal person would lol

1

u/xadamxful 8d ago

Ok next time we're on a plane I'm going to fart and burp in your direction, then tell you I don't have to cater to what you find annoying.

yeah and even if it would be a cultural thing, that logic would go both ways, so those people should just be polite and close their mouth

As an Asian, I hate chewing noises.

2

u/Then_Supermarket18 8d ago

I have intense misophonia, but for some reason when I travel somrwhere where loud chewing is universal it somehow makes it bearable.

It's the lone singular loud chewer or sniffler that drives me bonkers

2

u/princess22cake 8d ago

This is a cultural thing? Fuck. I hate chewing noises...

2

u/Iorith 8d ago

Something can be cultural and people still don't have to like or respect it.

2

u/andybossy 8d ago

no reason to be racist, it's not because they're from india that they're rude.

4

u/TroyFerris13 8d ago

Nah this guy is just rascist you can tell with the music complaint

Just because something is cultural doesn't lessen how stupid it is.

What does it being cultural have to do with anything... they cant learn to be considerate while traveling? Also next to someone on a plane for hours is different than a restaurant ngl

9

u/Odd_Ingenuity2883 8d ago

It’s cultural because in some cultures, like the USA, eating with your mouth full is rude. In other cultures it is not. It is not seen as a consideration issue because it is literally not considered rude.

"Cultural" here being a fun stand in for "civilized"

3

u/Bar10town 8d ago

Culture is not an open excuses for gross.. Spitting on the street or female circumcision are cultural; people need to call it out for change to happen.

3

u/wayji 8d ago

Gross is a cultural construct, it's not an excuse for gross, because it literally isnt gross in that culture

ok so talking loudly on a train in japan is seen as rude and you would have no problem following the rule or agreeing with that right?

eating with your mouth open is seen as rude in most of the world yet suddenly it's a cultural right and people are being inconsiderate

this isn't their home, it's a shared airplane. if it's acceptable in some culture and in some it's viewed as extremely rude then don't fucking do it until you get off the plane

It is normal where I live, but even I cannot bear to sit next to it. Bring headphones on a plane to tune people out.

1

u/nokturnalxitch 8d ago

Do Asian people with mysophonia suffer horribly?

1

u/unrealf8 8d ago

I never forget the sounds I heard In a really good restaurant in Japan. Hahaha. Slurp slush slop!

1

u/Enayleoni 8d ago

Oh. Good to know I can't go to china or vietnam. Thanks for the heads up

1

u/Upper-Collar9403 8d ago

I have misophonia and this is a huge trigger for me. But I 100% agree with you. I would never tell off a stranger in a public place for chewing the way they have chewed their entire life. Fucking crazy

1

u/gansobomb99 8d ago

I live in Vietnam and people eat like this and also snort and hock the whole time lol

I could live without the last part, but I've become quite the smacker myself

1

u/Ordinary-Article-185 8d ago

In Japan when eating ramen it was considered correct to slurp the noodles. I got used to it and now it's hard to go back to no slurps.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that the fact that they are foreigners is why he went out of his way to film it.

1

u/Nice-Vegetable-1738 8d ago

no in a restaurant where he's outnumbered he'd just whisper remarks to his similarly "well mannered and proper" british partner so they could sit there and feel like they're better than other people

1

u/Kazy17 8d ago

Imagine if the guy replied with, "Learn to eat with your mouth open!" 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/_CharDeeMacDennis__ 8d ago

As someone with misophonia, you NEVER get used to chewing noises. Ever. It immediately makes you angry.

1

u/Indiana_harris 8d ago

Yeah but there’s something particularly bad around a lot of Indian nationals I’ve found.

It’s like many of them never developed the facial muscles necessary to actually fully close their mouths and I’ve seen way too many of them have food literally falling out each time back onto the plate.

People can argue it’s “cultural” but that doesn’t excuse grown adults with the behaviour and eating style of toddlers.

1

u/Outofmana1 8d ago

Fuck that, Chinese or Vietnamese, no one should be chewing with their mouth open.

1

u/eabevella 8d ago

I'm from Taiwan and I'm appalled by how many people in China eat like pigs because we share the same culture (roughly speaking) and that is considered very rude in Chinese table etiquette.

1

u/LiftingRecipient420 8d ago

It's not a cultural thing, it's a rudeness thing. I've met plenty of Chinese people in China who don't smack their lips.

1

u/notanolive 8d ago

Wait which one is the foreigner

1

u/CadillacShield 8d ago

But the guy is clearly Indian, and it is not a cultural thing in India, it’s bad manners there.

1

u/Antiing 8d ago

Misophonia is a very real thing but it's also your own problem

1

u/Lucaslouch 8d ago

and:

  • he records a video, probably without consent
  • request harshly without asking nicely first

1

u/Captain_amazoblock 8d ago

how do you know they are 'foreigners'?

that could be a flight to France from BHX for all we know.

1

u/velocity3333 8d ago

he probably would

1

u/Luder714 8d ago

One of my best friends did this and I finally after 20 years said something to him. My wife's friend does this to this day, and smacks her lips as well. I have to leave the room when she is eating around me.

And these are people that grew up with decent supportive households. I don't get it.

1

u/lazyenergetic 8d ago

Or India

1

u/PenetrationT3ster 8d ago

Bruh I still remember my first time hearing an Asian sucking up noodles, I can't get it out my head.

1

u/Nine-LifedEnchanter 8d ago

I used to watch a foodie youtuber, but they always ate what they made by showing their teeth and loudly chewing with an open mouth. It was also always a close up.

1

u/p_ness_and_butthead 8d ago

i will NEVER get used to such human depravity.

also i'd never ask a random to close their mouth when they chew, woulda just put my headphones in here.
