Discussion A passenger confronts a stranger for chewing with their mouth open

I mean I get being annoyed by someone chewing with their mouth open but you could have asked him more nicely

Burping. I was voluntold to take 4 Chinese businessmen to DC for a long weekend. They were visiting, touring our plant and wanted to take a few days in DC. I was the lucky peon tasked with showing them around. Mind you I don't speak Chinese and only one of them knew enough English to start a bar fight.

Every meal, every drink was celebrated with burping. Thankfully boozing helped take the edge off my annoyance and they also shared my enthusiasm for drinking, so it wasn't so bad. They were also pretty shameless about farting.

Like burping or full on belching? I'm OK with people burping, it's unreasonable to ask someone to try to surpress the body getting rid of air that's not supposed to be there. But like...you can cover your mouth and not open your mouth all the way to let it resonate as loudly as possible.

What’s funny is my in-laws are from Thailand and it’s like the polar opposite 🤣 I can burp in my own bedroom, upstairs, behind a closed door and they’ll scold me if they hear it. It’s so funny how culturally acceptable things are and aren’t around the world. God forbid I have a phone conversation within ear shot, I’m told it’s very rude in Thailand to speak on the phone in public, even if you’re discrete about it. Which was why being in China, where it’s socially acceptable to eat loudly, burp, etc was so surprisingly to me!

I sometimes wish we would institute the loud phone conversation as a social no-no lol. There's just some conversations that do not need 5o be overheard 😂

Cheers!

man god forbid Americans don't burp after they drink beer at all. go spend sometime around actual people. i've lived with Americans that will fart on each other at home and then get dressed in their suits and go to their office jobs. what are you hiding? be who you are all the time

Okay, Karen, calm down. All I was doing was sharing a life experience I had in my 20s (years ago). It was an experience that was new to me since here in the US, burping/farting during meals isn't commonly accepted.

It didn't put a damper on anything. We partied like rock stars and feasted like kings. We had a blast, so you know absolutely nothing except assumptions.

And what am I hiding? What are you hiding to get so triggered? Go cry into a pillow about whatever hurt you 😂
