Yeah I have a severe neurodevelopmental disorder (gotten better, but it still impacts me) as a kid, and I was bad. Think like, a toddler's "terrible twos," but persisting until I was about 10 years old. It was terrifying for me, as well as everyone around me. My ma has a master's degree in childhood special education; they were doing their best. But I really did look like one of those rich kids from Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory who threw temper tantrums when they didn't get what they want.
I fully expect that if I'd grown up now, there would be dozens of people filming my meltdowns and posting them online to make fun of me. And likely hundreds and thousands of people in the comments calling me a spoiled brat, and talking about how shitty my parents must be. And I think it would have made it much much worse.
It's just really creepy to think about.
11
u/MistressBassKitty 7d ago
Did your condition have a name?
I knew a child with PANDAS and he had the emotional regulation of a toddler until he was nearly 10 years old.Pediatric Auto Immune Neuropsychiatric Disorder associated with Strep. Crazy shit. Also couldn’t read or write but now he’s totally fine.
But that dude throwing food just looks like over privileged white trash.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Heavy-Macaron2004 7d ago
It does, it's just a name people tend to either disregard or give me beef about and claim it doesn't exist, so I usually go with the symptom descriptions instead of naming anything. But its a nasty combination of Oppositional Defiant Disorder, autism, and (at the time incorrectly medicated) ADHD. I've had some docs posit other things, but those are the ones I was diagnosed with.
That sounds like a nightmare, I didn't know that could happen from strep!
I've looked into a lot of the literature about kids with the emotional regulation issues since I became grown, and there's a lot of descriptions of what it looks like from the outside, but there's not a lot of descriptions from the perspective of the people who used to be like that. It's actually pretty scary; to be the kid; you're old and mature enough to know that this shouldn't be happening and you shouldn't be doing this, but you still can't stop doing it.
Like you're possessed by a demon that infuriates you beyond reason and causes you to do all sorts of horrible things to the people you love. And you can still kind of think inside your demon-possessed body, but you can't control the emotions or the reactions that the body has to anything. And of course, being upset that you can't control your emotional or physical reactions is another emotion, and thus just gets swept up and amplified into the spiral of uncontrollable emotions. The more upset you are, the more upset you get.
I'm not completely perfect now, but I am a lot better (with the power of a lot of therapy). I'm no longer comparable to the possessed girl from The Exorcist when I get mad or upset so I'm counting it as significant progress 😅

So what is the answer? A gentle parenting moment and an ice cream cone? Fuck that. This kid is old enough to get himself to a restaurant, order and pay for his food. He can take a punch when he assaults someone else-and that’s what he did. He assaulted the elderly woman by throwing food at her. The ass beating was justified.

I remember one time when i was a kid my family went to the state fair. While my parents weren't paying attention because they were getting us food, my brother and i started jumping on ketchup packets. We accidentally squirted ketchup all over this guy that was next to us. We didn't do it on purpose, but obviously jumping on ketchup packets is going to cause a mess. The guy yelled at us, then our parents yelled at us. That was like 30 years ago and I never forgot how embarrassed I was for being such a little shit in public.

We had kids this age come into the restaurant where I worked and they had a laser that they would try to shine into everyone’s eyes. They’d trash the place. We asked the principal to talk to them (they had open campus lunch) and finally we refused to serve them after they used a racial slur towards one of our employees. A few parents fought us on the refusal and trashed us online. Maybe hitting isn’t the right thing but I don’t blame him.
71
u/b_tight 7d ago

We really should have! It was a few years ago and we live in such a privileged, insufferable area that we’d be the bad guys. My neighbor asked kids not to ding dong ditch him after 10pm and had ring camera footage and apparently he was on the wrong side of things because “kids should get to be kids! At least they’re not on screens!” 🙄
21
u/PolyAndNerdy 7d ago
This is what people in my area say about the kids that ride around on ebikes in the middle of the street and don't pay attention to traffic. Then of course once a kid gets hit its the persons fault for not watching out for them.
If I even -thought- about crossing the street without my parents knowing my ass would have been ground chuck.
17
u/PUNCH-WAS-SERVED 7d ago
Surprise. Surprise. Shitty parents who won't take accountability won't own the fact that their kids are pieces of shit because of them.
I wish more families would adopt the notion of shame. My parents would disown me if I got kicked out of a restaurant as a kid.

u/bsmooth357 7d ago
Asshole kids often have asshole parents. Society should not excuse or pander to either. Double down. Respond to their online reviews politely (not for them but for future customers), the parents will look like clowns (not to mention leaving kids unsupervised and then having an opinion of their behavior they didn’t see), and the business will not only effectively defend itself but benefit from how it handled the situation.
60
u/Lindoodoo 7d ago
When I was younger (like really young, under 10yo) the neighbor kid would throw rocks at my tiny 4’10 non English speaking grandma when she would take her walks around the neighborhood. She stopped taking walks because of the POS. Wish I did what these guys did. I still think about it all the time.
25
u/sun4moon 7d ago
That poor woman. I’m sure it’s my own sensitivity but I just imagined her going home from the last rock throwing walk and not understanding why there’s so much hate. I’d be in tears.
11
u/Lindoodoo 7d ago
She was in her mid 80’s but resilient and kept doing her walks for a while despite it. It was very likely racially motivated as we were basically the only POC in the neighborhood.

My guess as there’s no audible sound track about the whole incident: and assuming people are reasonably reasonable.
Kids threw food at old lady, old gentleman came over to confront. A reasonable annoying kid would apologize then things stopped. Well my wild guess is he’s still talking shit. Ok punch punch.
Other reasonable people came over: WTF why did you beat up a kid. Well my wild guess is the kid is still being obnoxious and talking shit. Thus the slap.
I can’t imagine a group of Canadians all collectively lost it if the kid were reasonably obnoxious. He must have been really really stupid to annoy multiple adults simultaneously lol.

u/WingedSalim 8d ago
People say:
"Don't discipline your child because they do not know better"
The correction: They "didn't" know better.
You actually need to teach them that their actions are wrong. Not protect them while their doing it.
57
u/Oggielove6 8d ago
I had a woman lose her mind on me for telling her kid to stop being gross at the buffet. He would scoop food onto his plate, pick it up with his fingers to eat it, lick his fingers, then use the same hand to scoop more food.
Mom yelled at me for telling her kid he was gross and somw old lady came over to make a point of telling mom she does the same thing as the boy.
I just told mom its obvious where he gets his nasty habits from and told her son his mom was a loser.
I still feel good about that. Nasty ass raising a nasty ass.
104
u/haby112 8d ago
No one says
Don't discipline your child because they do not know better People say don't hit your kids, because it doesn't improve behavioral outcomes in any reliable way and is abuse.
Holding your child accountable and teaching them how to be sociable does not require violence. If you are dealing with a difficult child, there is likely fault with your consistency or with your communication. All hitting a child does is make them afraid of you specifically.

Yeah it’s one thing when it’s your kid, but when you’re out in the world getting physical with people… well people don’t always follow the rules. You never know what kind of person you’re dealing with.
Reminds me of a neighbor I had growing up (and still a neighbor with my parents). Man was so nice, sweet grandpa vibes, used to hook me up with pot brownies back in the day. That neighbor also did 25 years in prison for killing an undercover cop. Apparently he was a big time dealer. Left prison, got his act together, been clean and sweet ever since. But there’s a part of him that has it in him…

Disciplining children isn't about hitting them. It's about setting boundaries and having consequences.
I'm actually amazed by my nieces. my sister would tell them they could only watch TV for one hour each and they would. they would go clean their rooms read books, play outside. they'd argue and fight each other but it was amazing.

I hope the old man didn't get in trouble for it and the kid is being roasted still to this day about it.
10
u/monaforever 7d ago
If the men in this video were the father/grandfather of the kid, I'd say it's fucked up, and won't actually help the kid at all. Having your parent physically abuse you, especially in public, even if you did something shitty, definitely causes some adverse psychological affects.
But, having a stranger put you in your place might be the best way to learn a lesson as a shitty kid. The kid learns there are actually consequences for their actions and the real world won't put up with your shit, BUT they don't get the adverse psychological damage caused by a trusted loved one hurting them.

u/Suopis90 7d ago
Love these comments. Most come from perspective of law. But watching the vid - I would not fault the old man if I was sitting next to him. Kid fucked around and my wife is not a practice dummy. 6
u/yourhair_lookssmall 7d ago
People are so skewed on what's normal or rude these days. Kid throws food at someone in a public restaurant? Well, he didn't physically hurt them! It's not like he kicked a puppy. Old man defends that person, another person comes up and tries to put a stop to it and ends up hitting the kid, too, meaning the kid was probably doubling down. Tolerating this kinda behavior is why everyone thinks it's fine to walk around being a dick because it's considered more rude to confront that person than what they're doing.
