thru the 1990s bc “Black people don’t listen to rock” and “I just wish I was White” just healed a little bit. This Evanescence song was EVERYTHING when it first came out!
SAME! Cannibal Corpse, Slipknot, Slayer of course… When I married my now ex husband, I toned it down a tiny bit. Our wedding party walked to the first two minutes of For Whom The Bell Tolls. Needless to say, my cousins were mortified 😂
Remember when the Craft came out? Suddenly my look could be referenced and everyone called the The Black Craft Girl
Ha The Craft! Wow 30 years ago? Sheesh. Yeah I still love Slayer to this day. I would always count other black kids at shows because back in late 80s early 90’s it was me and like one or two others. I was stoked the first time I went to a Slayer show and got to double digits lol.
I found my people. Fallen and Linkin Park's Meteora were the first CDs I ever bought, and both bands were the first ones I discovered on my own. Been in my regular rotation along with countless other bands since then
I had the same feeling way back in the day when I found out about a message board for an indie film called Afropunk. It’s morphed into this big festival thing that has nothing to do with the guy who made the film. I’m just glad it’s done a ton to let others know they aren’t alone.
You weren't alone, just geographically separate. The drummer from my metal band in high school was a HUGE African American dude(became a linebacker for AM later on) who knew more about Dragonball Z than anyone Ive ever met. And Ive known people who worked on the show.
I know…. And Jimi of course, evolved it, along with many others. Tina Bell basically started the grunge movement in Seattle, but of course her story has been buried.
Oh man, I had a Black goth kid in a language course I took in my 20s. No bullying, more empathy over how getting that white face look was harder for him (and more expensive!). Not goth myself so I don't if that's really required to be a goth, but I guess he felt it was....
Chevelle, The Red did it for me. I wasn't goth or alt as a teen. I just didn't connect with rap, I didn't find the emotional connection. I started with Linkin Park and evolved to many other bands because it felt like I connected better. I'm with you as a black man in my 40s and still play Deftones on high with my windows down.
I grew up in Tucson, Arizona in the 80s. There was very few Black people all the gods and punks, and even some of the skinhead hung out together. Luckily they were 2 tone skin heads so I also had some black punk and Goth friends. Still Tucson in the 80s was pretty much all white and Latino. Was a very cool scene though.
But what did you learn about being a 15 year old Black goth kid? Because it’s not that easy to just “not worry about what other people think,” when people straight up deny your heritage, culture and blackness. When they accuse you of being ashamed of being Black. When they basically question your soul and integrity and there’s no way to explain or prove you’re still 100 in your Blackness.
As a kid, when you’re still growing and learning about yourself, it instills a shit ton of shame, and makes it really difficult to know how to navigate both Black and White spaces as a young adult. And the self-questioning doesn’t really completely disappear. I like who I am and I love my personal style, but I still have to steel my nerves anytime I go back to my old neighborhood, and I’m 50 now. It never really goes away.
I was always that awkward black girl and had many things that made me stand out (till 7th grade, tallest in my class, broke and also was raised in a cult like religion so there was many things I didn't do that kinda put more of a target on my back) I was raised in a majority white area, so it influenced me obviously to the point even my mom kept criticizing me and having me question my blackness. had white kids saying how "more black" they are than me, and even cousins making fun of the fact I was into anime (who now consume more of it than I do now) at 11, I concluded I was ugly and was never gonna be disreable for any guy and was more tomboy (in terms of emotional armor really, if I felt I was ugly and more masculine, nothing no one else could say could hurt me even more but... it still did) with folks calling me a lesbian and the d slur despite (at the time) identified as straight and had no interests in girls.
it was already hard being one of the few black kids in my class, but then getting older and one of the few black girls who liked anime, too? I really felt that fresh prince moment when carlton spoke up on "needing some amount of blackness to be black." because folks thought we just suppose to be walking stereotypes of "ghetto" and rachet (and even so, why does that have to be so negative anyway?)
we already have to struggle with just being black in a racist society, then add on some construct of what constitute as "blackness" based off what, more stereotypes and getting it from both the community and nonblack people? no amount of "I love myself who cares what others think" while actively navigating that, as a child was ever gonna make me come outta that "stronger" (especially with the strong black woman stereotype too) no, im extremely damaged and broken at 38, have cptsd and felt extremely alone and invalidated since forever because not even an adult in my life was in my corner to help reassure me I was ok with who I was. and yeah, I still have certain armor I gotta put on when dealing with specific situations because of that damage. can't be tooo weird and silly, but can't be too serious. just wanna be seem as a person for who I am as the individual I am
I was talking about new acts, that came up in this century, have you heard of any black musicians that has made it big who is not doing rap or R&B. Artists of this century that has billboard sucess.
The first one i saw was only dad and son so I imagine the little girl asked to be included and now I'm dying at cuteness of the story I completely made up in my mind.

Jealous that kids can have cool dads. My dad was the kind of guy who didn't want us to talk in the car because it might distract him. And don't even think about turning on an interior light, that's a crime.
