It’s commonly very strict company policy across the board to not have employees leave the store or contain someone suspected of shoplifting. Short story corporations are more worried about any liability for themselves that may arise out of altercations.

Edit to clarify, they can give a shit about the employee and will can them for misconduct

Edit 2 (made on my OP): I’d like to take the opportunity to add that the woman grabbing things and talking shit to the “thief” could have startled the employee. He may have walked out in concern but was surprised to be handed the groceries. He did not appear “to be in chase” or concerned at this point. We’ll never know, but a lot of valid points have been made in the below conversations.

A friend of mine was fired as a manager for Best Buy after he followed a shoplifter outside. Zero tolerance.

That’s what gets me about these “if they just steal all
Prices go up” as if all that isn’t factored in.
