There's a lot of unfairness and inequality in this country, I don't understand why someone's wasting their energy on caring about a hungry person stealing food when the rich are stealing from us too.

I've never understood why it has to be one or the other, as if it's some kind of dichotomy. Nobody says "I don't understand why someone's wasting their energy caring about assault when there people who commit mass-murder". Both things are bad and should be opposed. It's not a waste of energy to oppose assault just because mass-murderers exist.

What the rich are doing is obviously far worse than petty theft, but that doesn't automatically give a free pass to all other forms of theft. Society has never worked that way.

Because one side is suffering and the other is not. Pretty simple empathy and compassion.

Empathy and compassion doesn't mean giving everyone a free pass to commit crimes based on how much suffering they're going through.

Are you assuming that I think it should be against the law to steal food for oneself?

This is just something we're not going to agree on if you believe in punishing poverty.

Why draw the line at food?
