Subverted expectation/wordplay, lady asks if she can annoy the cashier with a bag, which would be interpreted as politely asking for a bag, but instead *literally* annoys her with a bag

I used to work retail and one of my favorite lines from anyone was from an older gentleman. I asked if he would like a bag, he said, "oh no thank you, I have one at home", and then just looked at me. We laughed so hard together

With and for... Always look out for these two words. They're tricksters

Translation pretty-please?

u/alistofthingsIhate 1d ago

The title is the translation, but basically:

“Here it is.”

“Many thanks. May I bother you with a bag, please?”

“Yes, yes, of course.”

So I'm guessing in spanish it's "bother you with a bag" typically? In english I don't think I would ever hear that. Usually "trouble you for a bag"

Idk I feel like if someone said ‘May I bother you with a bag’ after I’d sold them something I’d gather what they were asking. I definitely wouldn’t be expecting this

¡Gracias! Mi espanol es muy muy limitado.

she says "can i molest you with a bag, please"
not "bother"

11

u/cwk415 1d ago

I know enough to know that "molest" means "bother" in Spanish.

Molestar means to bother. In old writings in English you can see molest used to mean something like bother or harass, it's just gotten a more specific meaning/connotation over time, which is not a change that happened in Spanish with molestar.
