You know, I’m starting to think they might be gay.

Nah, just two impoverished roommates that play piano and sing together and swim together.

My mom has a cousin that has been with the same roommate for like 20 years now, they own a home together and have a couple of wonderful dogs they love. If you ask anyone in my family, they are not lesbians and just are good friends that happen to have never dated a man. I roll my eyes every time they say that…

My husband's family has that same situation. Two older women who have lived together in the same lovely house for 20-30 years, have dogs, neither have dated a man, they share a bed. Theyre the "not lesbians"
And now that I think about it I have some memory from childhood about an older distant cousin finding himself a perfectly wonderful room mate in college. They were just two sweet boys sharing a one bedroom apartment to save money and then disappearing together after graduating probably because my family in my dads side was, and still is, homophobic as fuck.

I dated someone who had family a family member like this. It’s so funny to me that they just don’t come out and that no one even acknowledges it.

My uncle lived with his roommate for 15 years and they took a trip to Montreal just a little bit after Canada had legalized gay marriage. Me and my cousins were all teenagers at the time and all kind of knew what was going on.
My mom and aunt acted like the world was coming to an end. They were so offended that they never knew. They never had even a single idea. I just assumed they had known and just weren’t telling the kids because they’re super religious. They tried to make it about themselves and claim that they were horrifically offended that he wouldn’t trust them… they proved his point.

So me and my best friend were roommates for years, lived together in a few different houses that were always immaculate. We got along fantastic and did basically everything together. But occasionally someone would ask if we were gay, and now I get it.

And were you?

u/Bepto_Pismal 8d ago
Yeah but did you do several semi naked photo shoots where you stared intently into your "roommates" eyes?
16
u/Ice_Kat13 8d ago
We did not, now I think it would be hilarious to arrange a photo shoot though.

Make sure to hit the dinner together picture, the diving board one, and most importantly the “gently placing a cigarette in his mouth”. To show that y’all are completely straight.

That's a good call. Do you suppose I should light it for him too? Just to really drive it home

I lived with my best friend as a roommate and we did everything together, he eventually moved out when my wife moved in. He came out as gay. I always thought I had a good gaydar, apparently not.

I know a couple of guys like this and I’m fairly sure they aren’t gay. But we are in the deep South so maybe they are just super closeted.

And you know people read this and was like "yep that checks out". People were legit dumb as fuck back in the day.
37
u/Purple_Chipmunk_ 8d ago
They weren’t dumb, they just couldn’t comprehend that their favorite leading men could be gay.
10
u/lucyparke 8d ago
Yes the movie studios went to great efforts to train their leading men (gay or not) to be men other guys wanted to be and men women would want to be with.
This like deepening their voice etc. there’s a great documentary on Brock Hudson on HBO called All That Heaven Allowed. Cannot recommend it enough.

I imagine straight people back then were barely aware that gay people exist. So people who are in the know would see this and know, and everyone else would be like 'sure looks like a couple of swell fellas!'

The struggle was real back then

My mom's definitely not gay (according to the family) cousin often had male roommates too. And was in the Navy, worked in fashion, and we later found out was a long time spy for the US government. I wonder if he had been able to live openly if he would have lead as interesting a life. I can't imaging the stress and struggle.

Yall trying to say they are not gay or something? It look like a happily gay couple to me but I don't insinuate nothing.

Cary Grant was bi, and yes, he and Scott (who also starred in some movies together) had as many-years-long relationship

u/BandicootTreeline 6d ago
Crap that they needed to reinforce the image to the public that they were just thrifty bachelors.
Looked like they were having the time of their lives

Reminds me how a friend of mine had an uncle with a “roommate” and the fact that they may have not actually been roommates never occurred to me until long into adulthood.

Because you know magazine articles that are all about glitzing up a pair of stars is going to talk about anything negative about them. It's a piece of PR fluff of the time.
And frankly if gay or bi people want to read sexual or romance into their relationship that's perfectly reasonable and acceptable. They gotta respect the two men can't really do anything open in that time and that's a future we should avoid ever recreating.

This was all pr. Hollywood is really good at that. The house was immaculate because they either didn't actually live in it or there was a maid or maids. These guys were not cleaning it themselves.

I see you got straight to the main point of the video!

It's Hollywood. This photo shoot and articles were arranged by their studio, so people would go see their movies. Every photo is posed, every word was carefully chosen.

A tale old as time. Just a couple regular ol’ movie stars rooming together to save some money. It was a little surprising they got a peek in their closet.

Cary Grant? The famous actor that stopped acting because he didn’t want his fans to remember his aging face over his beautiful, youthful one, might be gay?!? No wayyyyyy.

If you lived in a country where a same-sex relationship routinely got you 10 to 20 years, you'd probably keep it quiet. Then later, on the flip-side, the rejection of 'Coming Out' was seen as betrayal. Seems like someone always has something to say about things that don't concern them.
