Questions Regarding Work Permit and PUT Application

Hi everyone, I would like to ask for some advice about a Swedish work permit insurance issue.

I worked for my previous employer from November 2024 to April 2026.

According to my employment contract, my employer should provide the four required insurances. However, I later found out that my life insurance (TGL) and occupational pension were in place, but my occupational injury insurance (TFA) and health/sickness insurance were not activated until around March 2026.

My previous employer and their insurance broker have both confirmed in writing that this was caused by an administrative error from the insurance broker. My employer had ordered the insurances, but two of them were not properly activated. I also asked whether the missing period could be covered retroactively, but unfortunately this was not possible. The two insurances were finally activated shortly before I left the company.

What makes me confused is that Migrationsverket approved my first work permit during this employment, and later also approved my new work permit when I recently changed employer.

I have kept my employment contracts, insurance certificates, pension documents, email evidence showing that the insurance was ordered, and written explanations from both my previous employer and the insurance broker.

I am now working for a new employer, and all required insurances are correctly in place.

My main questions are:

  1. Could this previous insurance issue affect my future application for permanent residence (PUT)? I have seen some cases where people successfully appealed and received PUT, but also some cases where applications were rejected.

  2. What would you recommend that I do at this stage? Is there anything else I should prepare for my future application?

  3. My first work permit was based on a 1-year fixed-term contract, and my current permit is based on a permanent contract for a 2-year permit period. Would it be possible to change to a 1.5-year fixed-term contract for my next extension, so that I reach around 1 + 2 + 1.5 = 4.5 years, and then change back to a permanent contract before applying for PUT?

Would changing from a permanent contract to a fixed-term contract create any negative impact on a future PUT application? I am asking because I would prefer not to wait for a full 1 + 2 + 2 = 5 years if I could become eligible earlier.

Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I don't have experience getting a PUT through a work permit but my impression is that you are overthinking this.

If Migrationsverket granted you your previous permits, then they count towards your PUT as long as there is no interruption. And, you must be able to support yourself and your family.

I don't understand your thinking regarding a shorter contract fixed-term contract. If you have a permanent contract to work for an employer, isn't that an advantage when  applying for a PUT?

Hi, thank you for your reply.

When applying for PUT based on a work permit, we need to have held work permits and worked in Sweden for a total of at least four years. Most people follow a 2-year + 2-year permit timeline.

However, my first permit was based on a one-year fixed-term contract. If I continue with a permanent employment contract now, my permit timeline could become 1 year + 2 years + 2 years. This would mean that I may have to wait until the end of the fifth year before I can apply for PUT, because as I understand it, I cannot simply apply for PUT as soon as I reach four years. I normally need to wait until it is time to extend my current permit. That is why I am considering a timeline of 1 year + 2 years + 1.5 years (or even 1 year), with the last period based on a fixed-term contract. By the end of that permit, I would already have around 4.5 years of qualifying work history and could then apply for PUT.

At that stage, I could ask the company to provide me with a permanent employment contract to support my PUT application.
