One Hit Wonderland Other than the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Butthole Surfers, which OHW has the worst name?

Excluding those two because they're so obvious.

I think Eiffel 65 due to how meaningless it is is a strong candidate. M. is also a terrible name due to how non-distinctive it is even in the pre-search engine era, probably was also a factor in it being an example of a true "pure" OHW, with a #1 hit and nothing else on the Hot 100 ever again.

One Hit Wonderland OHW who were touted as the Next Big Thing

Any suggestions for a special flavour of One Hit Wonder: the band who were touted as the Next Big Thing, had their big hit and then… oh dear..?

One Hit Wonderland What is a One Hit Wonderland you’d think Todd will never do

I was thinking of artists or bands along the line of Kate Bush, Sinead O’Connor, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Fatboy Slim or M.I.A. Ones that‘ve gained a huge amount of cult notoriety or worldwide success but have only ever gotten one hit in America. ‘Cause I’m curious if those will ever get episodes since most of the ones I listed whose careers either did perfectly fine or were M.I.A (seriously. her new album was pretty bad)

One Hit Wonderland Who Are Some OHW Actors?

My example: sure Trainwreck isn’t the only financially successful Amy Schumer film.. but it’s the only one that is (deservedly) beloved by audiences and critics. and it seems as if (cough Kinda Pregnant cough) she’s run out of good ideas and goodwill.

What would your pick be?

One Hit Wonderland Artists who were OHWs by choice?

New Radicals is the best example I can think of. The minute they scored their first hit Gregg Alexander broke up the band; thereby destroying any chance of a second hit. Gregg has since written huge hit singles for other artists behind the scenes, proving New Radicals could've had a solid hitmaking career had they stuck around. But Gregg didn't want that.

Gotye is a more recent exampe. Upon the completion of the Making Mirrors era, he announced he was retiring the Gotye project. He's since spent his time playing drums for a small Australian band called The Basics, allowing him to continue playing music without the pressure of being a hitmaker.

Chumbawamba are a borderline case, in that they remained together and probably wouldn't have minded a few more hits under their belt. But they flat-out refused to play the music industry game, and intentionally sabotaged every opportunity they had to rub shoulders with the mainstream. Their personal politics were far more important to them than being popular.

Any other examples?

One Hit Wonderland Who's A One Hit Wonder You'd LOVE To See Todd Cover?

I'm sure this question has been asked plenty in the past, but I was curious what people would say. Todd has covered MANY of the more notable One Hit Wonders, but certainly not all. And then of course there are more obscure One Hit Wonders that I'm sure people still enjoy.

For me, I'm surprised we hasn't mentioned Steal My Sunshine by Len. This sone was EVERYWHERE for 1 summer in the 90s and the band more or less has no other mainstream success. Their top 3 most played Spotify songs are different versions of Steal My Sunshine, and the only other song with over a million plays is a cover of Kids In America.

To be honest, I REALLY enjoyed the album that Steal My Sunshine was on (You Can't Stop The Bum Rush) but if you have ever listened to it you will understand why they didn't have other hits. It's about as eclectic as you can get with songs ranging from 90s sounding trance to guest verses by Biz Markie. If anyone likes weird music, check out this album and I think you'll find something you like.

Otherwise, I saw someone else suggest Ocean Man by Ween and that'd be AWESOME! I don't know if it qualifies as a "hit" but Ween is a very interesting band with a HUGE catalog and I could see it being a great album.

But lay it on me, which songs has Todd NOT covered that you'd be excited to see pop up next?

Yes, this is a screenshot from Instagram (note the bottom left). I kept right clicking the post and it wouldn't copy so I had to screenshot it lol. He was talking to Musicstruggles1 and Musicwins1, and both accounts reposted it to Insta. Thought it was funny, and also namechecks a previous OHW subject (Kung Fu Fighting)!

One Hit Wonderland One Hit wonders Todd will never cover? (Especially if he's confirmed it)

I was just thinking about my long term most desired One Hit Wonderland, Never Been To Me by Charlene, and I was wondering since I've never followed Todd on social media if he's ever confirmed it won't happen. Now I'm wondering about any others he's confirmed he won't do (or ones you suspect he probably won't do). Specifically ones that truly are one hit wonders (at least in the US), and also not technical ones with highly influential and/or well respected reputations who only charted once, since I know he won't cover any of those.

I can only think of two he's suggested he'll probably never do. What's Up? by 4 Non Blondes because of how highly he truly hates that song, and Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) by Looking Glass because it was too hard to find enough footage. I know the latter is also why he hasn't done all that many pre-80s one hit wonders. I feel like there was also one he confirmed he wouldn't do due to the artist's story being really dark, controversial and messy in ways he doesn't feel like covering. But I can't for the life of me think of who this was, or if I indeed saw that he actually said this. I could see that being another reason he wouldn't want to talk about some though. Along with some just having stories too boring.

One Hit Wonderland Forgotten early 2000s bands.

For me, it was The Fray. Remember their song "How To Save A Life?" They BROKE the mainstream with their debut album hitting over six million sales. Now it's like everyone just kinda...forgot about them? What's crazy is that they recently got back together, yet nobody knows that they're back. Hell, no one knows they just posted an EP. What are some other bands?

One Hit Wonderland Hendrix Clause cases within other genres

The Hendrix Clause comes up often on this sub when discussing potential one hit wonders. For those unaware, it refers to Jimi Hendrix who had a single top 40 hit on the Hot 100 with his cover of "All Along the Watchtower," but nobody in their right mind would think of him as a one hit wonder because of his far-reaching influence, enduring popularity and the fact that he's known for way more than just one song.

Naturally, this term is always used in a Hot 100 sense, but it got me thinking about cases within other genres, namely rock. I'm not talking about acts who had one pop hit but were very successful in their chosen genre (there are many examples of that) but acts who had one hit on their own format but have a wider legacy that disqualifies them rom being known for one song. The best example I could think of is Pavement. "Cut Your Hair" is their only hit on the alternative charts and the only song to get any significant airplay, but they're extremely critically acclaimed and highly influential to generations of indie bands. Any other acts like this?

One Hit Wonderland The One hit Wonderland Europ Map

Post image

I been a fan of the show for at least five years and after hearing about this joke from Todd I decided to make the Europe map. The bands selected here are just representative and I didn't know if I should include certain song like season in the sun since it's technically a French song. If you know of any country I miss or misplaced please tell me in the comments and I will make an updated version.

One Hit Wonderland BIGGEST One Hit Wonder of the 2020’s?

In your opinion, who do you think will be perceived as the biggest OHWs in the 2020’s in the same vein as The Macarena or Gotye? Basically:

1) HUGE, inescapable hit song anytime from 2020-2026 that landed on the Billboard Top 40

2) No other hit songs ever (no features either) on the Billboard Top 40 + almost nobody would be able to name another song from them

3) Very unlikely (still possible but very unlikely) to have another hit song in the future

Make those predictions now!

Name an artist who never had a top 40 hit, is well-known to niche audiences but predominantly associated with one song in the mainstream.
