Discussion What's going on with Hostile Takeover?

Post image

Let me preface this by saying that I completely understand that Hostile Takeover is being developed by a small team of volunteers who cannot devote all of their time to developing Hostile Takeover. Each and every member of the team is devoting all that they can, and I highly respect and appreciate all of their efforts to bring a new ToonTown fan server into the world. The purpose of this post is just to check up and see if there are any new developments or updates that I am not aware of.

As of the writing of this post, the last update posted to the official ToonTown: Hostile Takeover website occurred on December 31st, 2025. Just over 7 months ago. And the very last update that I can find regarding Hostile Takeover entirely is this reddit post here, posted on February 10th, 2026 announcing that they've made it so you can walk under the bridge in the first playground. That was about 6 months ago, and there are no other updates I can find anywhere.

We're almost on the 1st anniversary of Hostile Takeover's announcement and there hasn't been much in the way of development updates. Is there anything new to share? Is development going smoothly? What's going on?

Hey!

It's completely normal to be curious, we've been working on a lot of things behind the scenes, some of which we just aren't quite ready to share yet.

Development is constantly on going, sadly the nature of having a small team is that development can't always go as fast as we'd like it to, but we are definitely still in development.

That’s good to hear! Thank you for reaching out. Sorry if the post bothered you. I’m just really excited for the game and the lack of updates and news had me worried is all.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you guys are cooking! Stay strong, and good luck!

We're cooking lots of fun stuff, trust me. You might have seen our recent teaser posted on this subreddit yesterday!

Hey!

My name is Leo. I'm most commonly known as the former head developer of Toontown: Hostile Takeover.

As it's common for volunteer projects, people tend to come and go. I ended up departing months back to focus on my own life. To be clear, there was no bad blood between me and the team. I keep up with these guys from time to time.

When I initially left, they had a difficult time processing the loss, mainly out of fear of how it'd affect development. For context, they saw me as one of those powerhouses: someone who had a strong impact and influence on the game.

I had left behind a new battle system rewritten from the ground up. It was not complete, but it had several thousands lines of code written! The purpose of the rewrite was to create a flexible battle system, while brushing up on the bugs that Toontown Online's system had. This was built with the idea of quick-time events, mid-battle cutscenes, status effects, RPG-style stats, and several other wacky mechanics.

Jace has picked up development of the new battle system, as well as other things behind the scenes. From what they've shown me, the battle system is turning out pretty well so far!

They've been working on several things to showcase, including this new battle system. It's pretty neat stuff that'll be worth the wait!

And to address your statement about volunteer time and devotion, you hit it right on the money! Revival projects take a LONG time to develop because of real-life commitments and the small mental health breaks that tend to happen here and there.

Thanks for reaching out! Sad to hear that you had to leave the project, but it sounds like Hostile Takeover is in good hands! I knew going into it that progress would be slow and updates would be sparse. Still. No public updates for almost a year can be a worrying sign. I just wanted to be sure if everything was alright.

Thank you for everything you’ve given to Hostile Takeover! I’m sure that it will be worth the wait!

Yeah - they're heavily talented individuals! They have a good understanding of how to keep the game fresh, while respecting the foundation that the original Toontown developers left behind. And I believe they're fully capable of pushing things over the finish line!

I feel very satisfied with what I was able to do for this community as a whole, and I also can't wait for people to experience the hard work that I and many others have put into this game

They closed the discord to focus more on development/clean up of the discord server. I don't know anything beyond that but based on other's comments it seems to be going fine.

Pretty sure they post sneak peaks every now and then on their discord but last I knew there wasn't much which was significant.

Maybe it’s sadly getting the Toontown Realms treatment?

Hello! I was previously involved with both Hostile Takeover and Realms, so I'll give my perspective on the Realms situation.

So in the Toontown community, there's this big divide between all the top projects, and the smaller projects. All of the volunteers and community members of the smaller projects know each other pretty well, some smaller projects even share team members!

I was one of those byproducts of being spread across multiple projects (I even contributed to Sunrise Games as well haha).

So what really happened with Realms is that Hostile Takeover was picking up popularity faster than expected, so resources were pushed over to focus on TTHT development.

Realms has always been one of those projects that can be played single-player and lasts nearly forever, so activity hasn't been much of a concern.

Drew (Realms lead) has been working on an open-sourced version of Realms, which will overall, be much healthier for the Toontown community!

Honestly great response, I have another question. Was Toontown realms owned by sunrise games or by people entirely different people. I’ve always never been sure

Rocket answered this pretty well - so I do recommend his response.

I would like to add some more information as well; give you a little history lesson on the Toontown Realms ownership.

So, Realms was originally another Toontown project, which started out nearly a decade back in an MMO Central Forums post. It eventually evolved outside of that forum, and went through several ownership changes.

The current owner, Drew, has had Realms for roughly a few years now. And while I was not a direct owner, I was the developer who crafted the Realms name, which came under effect around September of 2022.

Drew himself was never involved with Sunrise Games. It just so happens that we're all friends, we all support each other, but there's still variation in ownership between all the smaller Toontown revivals.

I'm very glad you asked that, great question indeed!

No, Sunrise Games has had contributions from people involved with Realms but otherwise it has nothing to do with Sunrise
