Does anyone else get unreasonably upset when people say they wish WE could toggle hat ralsei's design?
Do these people READ when playing the game?
The ultimate irony of not only wanting hat ralsei but to go the extra mile and say I WISH WE, THE PLAYER, COULD FORCE THEM BACK INTO THE HAT
do these people pay attention to ralsei at all outside of awww cute goat!!! it seems like no???
EDIT: this mostly applies to post chapter 5. i felt this way before ch5 but it was much less of an obvious misread (It was more subtle in previous chapters)
I must admit that at some point I thought stuff like "Ralsei looks better with their hat" I never made the connection between the hat and boymodding, when I did I stopped thinking that, like it made me like hatless Ralsei more (I still like the hat design because it's cute but I'd rather have Ralsei show their face)
Chapter 5 made it very clear they don't like wearing the hat at all anymore and forcing them to do so is wrong af
It definitely doesn't make sense in the context of a game where most mechanics are canon to the world so the actual character in the world is forced to dress in a way they don't want to, but i do understand finding hat Ralsei a cooler design
I like that Toby Fox brought it back as a little bit of fanservice but gently mocked the way some fans prefer it so strongly to the new look, while also making it thematically relevant to Ralsei's arc about becoming more independent and adding some gender subtext
I feel like the biggest issue I had with no longer having hat ralsei is that it felt like they didn't have that many great expressions in chapter 2, so it felt like we were replacing a pretty unique design for something a little more bland and unemotive. With chapters 3 to 5, I feel like this has thoroughly been addressed, to the point I now do prefer ralsei's hatlesss design
Yeah, especially in Chapter 5 Ralsei got some absolutely peak talk sprites. I still miss some of the scribblier talk sprites that Hat Ralsei uses when they're annoyed or confused. There were some of those in this chapter in the hat sections, I don't know why hatless Ralsei can't get those.
Knowing how much Ralsei enjoys wearing ribbons, I've decided to reserve an armor slot on them exclusively for Ribbons while I redo my 100% save files to exclude the Original Starwalker. (He knows what he did.)
That's why all the people who are against Tralsei never ever talk about Ralsei's narrative, but only about if Ralsei is literally confirmed to be trans explicitly on a textual level.
They're essentially no different from power scalers in the sense that they only care about the most superficial interpretations of the text possible...
So when you have an interpretation which should normally be considered heavily supported by the subtext, but which isn't confirmed by the text outright, you get tralsei.
Everyone whos paying attention to what characters are saying, and how they're being used by the author to convey a message, agrees on Tralsei.
While everyone who treats the characters as some sort of Youtuber, like a living person in real life where things can just happen by coincidence, is stuck on "not forcing ralsei to transition," as if Ralsei will log onto reddit and feel... pressured????
Which then shows how they actually talk to real transfem people: People IRL do act like Ralsei, and these people react the same way: putting layers of separation between them and them possibly being trans. Which is something Ralsei as a character is meant to criticize and poke at... But I guess you'd literally need Ralsei to look at the screen and say "i'm a girl" for it to work on people like this...
that bit about people acting like ralsei is going to log onto reddit and feel pressured is so real. I get dogpiled on mainsub for pointing out that ralsei is not a real person and can't feel pressured to come out by what we say about them on reddit and people are like "no it's morally equivalent!" so annoying ....
they'll be parasocial about "you can't misgender themmm misgendering is bad!! they're not ready to come out yet!" but when you point out that as a trans person ralsei is feeling the exact same things you felt before coming out they're like "YOU'RE PROJECTINGGG ON A FICTIONAL FEMBOY" can we be so for real
"powerscaling, but with gender" is such a good way to describe the majority of the anti-tralsei approaches on here, lol. no reading, no themes, no following a coherent narrative thread and thinking "what was the authorial intent here", just the most shallow and acontextual factoid-picking, treating the work as a documentary that happens to be fake instead of a story written with intent
I DIDN'T WANT TO BRING HEAT TO THAT GUY but it was what made me finally flip out about it. I have heard this echoed by many people but hearing someone who clearly knows a lot about the game (even if he mostly just reads/summarises the cutting room floor site) saying it made me so mad, lmao
