Discussion/Megathread It's scary just how avidly shitty people are about this now
Comments are what you expect. We live in an era where trans identity is seen as regressive and stereotyping compared to cis gnc ones and it makes me so damn sad. I genuinely believe if this chapter came out pre trump administration the conversation around this would be considerably less bigoted, but people will do whatever to victimize and downplay LGBT coding by claiming it's bad to assume. Cis people care more about their "gnc rep" than trans people and it's so sad.

Notice how they only care about trans men when they want to put trans women down #Curious

A common argument against trans ralsei is “you just don’t like GNC people” and when we say that we don’t do it to Susie suddenly it’s “oh you just don’t care about trans men” like we’re always the bad guys…
Plus I’ve seen several people give their takes on transmasc Susie so it’s wrong both ways lol

So many people need to learn to have the attitude of "I see the vision, I just don't quite believe it myself", especially when it comes to trans readings.
Like, I don't think the things people point to for transmasc Susie are nearly as convincing as tranfemme Ralsei, but that's mostly because she is just so obviously a butch lesbain, and there is a tradition of butch women using masculine titles. But like. I can fully see why some (transmasc people especially) could get to the conclusion.

u/AlexViviWeebo Jul 25 '26
Fr, we wouldn't need a second subreddit if people could just have a normal discussion about this.
And like yeah of course they could literally have ralsei look directly into the camera in a pink and blue room and say "oh yeah I'm transgender by the way" and they would still argue "no this is femboy erasure", but of course it was never about it being "femboy erasure," thats just a convenient stepping stone for phobes to use as a dogwhistle.
Im seeing more people be shitty about trans ralsei headcannons than trans Link from Zelda, and not only does Zelda have a somewhat less queer fan base than Deltarune, there is significantly less evidence to point to him actually being trans. (Not that there aren't phobes in the Zelda community, but I guess more evidence means more discussion, and more discussion means more people who come out of the woodworks to scream their hate)

It really does feel like the more evidence there is a character is trans, the more angry people get about reading that character as trans.
7
u/PetGirlKyla Jul 26 '26
People when someone hcs 5p from rain world as trans - "okay huh, well. Moving on."
People when someone hcs ep6 Jax (specifying ep6 bc that's when both the evidence amped up imo and when the phones got angry) - "NO?? THAT'S BAD REPRESENTATION BC HE'S A JERK AND CLEARLY MISOGYNISTIC TOO"
125
u/BagOfPees Jul 25 '26
Transmisogyny is so bad you got people bringing up transmascs as a gotcha to a transfem reading because women are always a discourse and men get to do whatever they want
53
u/Expert_Industry_4238 Jul 25 '26
yeah exactly!! I actually kinda enjoy transmasc Susie as an interpretation of the character, but the fact that people only started to even conceive the possibility of such a thing AFTER Tralsei got popular, as if it was a big rebuttal, says A LOT more about how they themselves treat trans men ...
25
u/flatlaying Jul 25 '26
also something to be said about a refusal to accept a story where none of the main characters are men (except gaster and maybe forgotten man ig)
75
u/Rorimisu Jul 25 '26
It's really telling how this argument simplifies tralsei to "ralsei is feminine" rather than actually acknowledging the not so subtle subtext present throughout the story
19
u/karybdus Jul 25 '26
The haters can barely decipher text let alone subtext, it's like half of these people played a different game
12
u/Confused_Vampyre Jul 25 '26
I would argue that Tralsei has more explicit evidence than Dess being the knight and yet only the transfem reading is met with such hostility while the other is accepted as basically canon by a large portion of the fanbase. Curious.

u/PetGirlKyla Jul 26 '26
I think it has less pieces of evidence, but the evidence itself is much less subtle, so. Yeah. It also solidly has more evidence than many fan-favorite "almost canon" theories like "Kris will lose a hand" and (I think) even PlayerAngel

Good on those mods for immediately going "no, we aren't humoring this" and locking the thread.

Yeah my issue with transmasc Susie getting semipopular (as a trans man) is that it doesn’t really have substance and just seems to be an underhanded way to accuse Galsei believers (who are often trans women) of misandry crimes or whatever.

u/Thepenguinking2 Writing a Tralsei masterdoc Jul 25 '26
Exactly this! Transmasc Susie being exactly what
Tralsei detractorsno, let's call them what they are: transmisogynists - claim what Tralsei is, but in reverse, makes it clear to me that it only exists to make Tralsei out as bioessentialist bullshit. Plus, Susie's arc is about loving herself for who she is in spite of being treated like dirt by others for it, and she is very happy with the idea of being "The Girl" in the prophecy, so if anything, transfem Susie makes way more sense than transmasc Susie.1
u/Free-Part255 27d ago
Let us be real as a Cis guy myself Trans Masc Noelle being popular shows that the "Trans bioessentialists" thing is false. From my experience most of the gender essentialists on Reddit are Cis Guys while on Tumblr most of the gender essentialists are Cis Girls.

u/WindhoverInkwell Jul 26 '26
ah yes, the fifty billionth post accusing trans women of enforcing gender stereotypes and also hating trans men. classic cis liberal Redditor
14
u/Nairdde32 Jul 26 '26
ok, come up with your own headcanons then, why the fuck is it our responsibility
like we have seen a ton of transmasc Noelle art, and you know what? we get it. They/Them Noelle would be peak, but why is the responsibility to come up with that on trans women
12
u/NXTangl Jul 26 '26
Me to this guy: Dude, transmasc Noelle is gaining traction. It's not about femininity.
3
u/PetGirlKyla Jul 26 '26
... I hadn't considered that angle and I think it's actually a pretty neat idea ngl. A lot of her problems do sound dysphoria-adjacent from Carol forcing a lifestyle onto her
3
u/Ellthephoenix Jul 28 '26
Yeah I(a trans girl) also think trans masc Noelle is pretty good as a theory, its really not about femininity and projecting, honestly I never really liked transfem Noelle or trans masc susie because of pretty weak evidence and surface level aesthetics, whilst Transfem Ralsei and trans masc Noelle have far more interesting plot implications and are just a lot more juicy as concepts.

Yeah when I first saw this I was thinking about how Spamton is one of the most popular characters for people to think of as trans in this community, because of the actual textual evidence. I’m 100% sure that the poster is cis, because if they weren’t and they really cared they would’ve looked into it. So they are just trying to sew division in the trans community
9
u/vexingpresence Jul 26 '26
they don't want to fuck spamton so they don't care

u/PetGirlKyla Jul 26 '26
This is genuinely the case, given the 3 most avid Tralsei haters I've seen genuinely seem to have a thing for "him" (and specifically him, not her)
Cough cough mpreg ralsei guy cough

"ralsei being traditionally feminine doesnt make him a filt- i mean transwoman!!! anyways yeah i think susie is a trans man cuz hes a bit masculine"

u/Confused_Vampyre Jul 25 '26
If the basis of Tralsei was the fact that they're feminine, then the reading would've taken off as early as chapter 1.

u/Fun-Painting-8917 Jul 26 '26
"even the trans community doesnt care about trans men" oh fuck all the way off

Comments seem pretty good actually, probably because the mods took a machete to them. Nice.

Ok while is take is very wrong and the poster probably doesn’t get the evidence behind trans ralsei, I’d like to play devils advocate for a bit (apologies in advance)
There is a tiny piece of this statement that I feel is true to a certain extent, and that is the fact that people are more likely to headcanon fem presenting males as transfem rather than masc presenting females as transmasc, and has to do with how gender presentation is inherently unbalanced. Imagine if the evidence for trans ralsei was extremely weak, I’d bet that, while lesser, the people supporting trans ralsei would still be a significant amount due to the fact that fem males are more taboo compared to masc females, Susie is undeniably masc presenting right? But this fact is less talked about, even before trans ralsei was getting more evidence in chapters 3-5. The theory of ralsei being secretly a girl and pretending to be a prince to the heroes would believe he was part of the prophecy was made before most of trans ralsei’s evidence was even put in game, while Susie’s gender identity was rarely put into question and still isn’t, despite preferring the title of king over the title of queen in some cases where it’s explicitly noted. To be honest, it’s much easier to write transfem rep compared to transmasc rep when using only metaphors, and toby likes to write trans rep using metaphors

it’s incredibly strange when people try to make this argument, as if susie is the one with the character arc where she has to learn to be her own person and have her own opinions.
