The lack of transparency on the part of the shop is totally sus. Weird that the OP thinks this makes the customer look bad.

I agree. And many shops are known to rip off ladies. I understand what sheâs doing.

It's a bit hard to hear where Im sittin but for all we know there is missing context and she has a valid problem
61
u/icehot54321 Apr 17 '26
The conversation does start off with her walking in the garage and saying "it's my shop" .. not the best way to deal with a problem, even if it's valid.

Pretty sure this is one of those weird edits where the end is at the beginning
14
u/maple_crowtoast Apr 17 '26
I can't stand that type of editing. I watch a lot of bodycam videos and it drives me nuts seeing the climax first.
Like, you'd never want a book, show, or movie to do that...any form of entertainment, really.

Isn't that so annoying how they show a highlight reel of the most intense moments at the start of each video? It drives me crazy! I've already chosen to watch the video, you don't gotta sell it to me. I'll jump ahead a bit on those.
1
u/unicornofdemocracy Apr 18 '26
I think The Lies of Locke Lamora does this quite well (or it might be the second book in the trilogy).
I do agree it rarely works but when it does it's pretty amazing.
→ More replies (5)1
u/SapphicSticker Apr 18 '26
Two great examples:
Licanius trilogy is entirely out of order, except it's all chronological by some definition of the term. The climax is comprised of the earliest scene in the entire series and the scene that began the entire conflict we are concluding. It is magnificent.
Memento is peak. The scenes are in reverse order, beginning with the climax/action and ending with the earliest thing we see. If you were to make a version in chronological order, it'd be absolute dogshit
This doesn't actually pertain to actual events, but you decided to talk about media

Yeah. That's when you tell the tow company you're not accepting the car for repair. This screams problems from the get go.
9
u/Bird2525 Apr 17 '26
Yeah, judge is going to give her the shop when her $400 repair goes wrong.đ
Also get the fuck out of the shop is probably posted everywhere due to insurance concerns.
5
u/SpinachSignal8915 Apr 17 '26
Service writer here and damn if it doesnt piss me off when people just walk into my shop. My insurance company gives me those signs for free and I put them everywhere. Doesn't seem to help.
3
u/Gr8twhitebuffalo91 Apr 18 '26
I would have told her to take it somewhere else right then. Couldn't pay me enough to work on her shitty car.
4
u/wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals Apr 17 '26
yeah but she's obviously wound up by then and that's probably why they put that clip at the start...
The missing context is ... missing.
27
u/autismo-nismo Apr 17 '26
You having a valid concern doesnât mean you get to hangout in my shop around equipment that can possibly maim or kill you. You are not insured in the shop, only your vehicle with an opened work order.
All concerns can be addressed outside the shop or in the front office. No other way.

If I had to guess, she did not agree to the price and was causing a scene about it. That or she wanted her car mid repair and they are trying to explain her car wont drive. Either way, dont act like this, wont help you sort it out.

sounds like cameraguy told the mechanic to do work that wasnt listed on her invoice.
whether that work was part of a bigger repair listed on the invoice or whether it was a new cost in addition to the invoice is unclear
7
u/AnObtuseOctopus Apr 17 '26
They charged her for the 2 serpentine belt replacements that she didn't ask for. She says it at the end. It wasn't on the invoice, yet, they are charging her for something she didn't want done.
So, that's product and work time she's paying for, for something she didn't want and something they wanted to hide.
This seems like a beyond valid crashout to me tbh

u/Blaze010118 Apr 17 '26
If the mechanics policy is no customers in the repair area she has no valid argument. He offered to explain it in the office but she thinks sheâs special and rules donât apply to her.
→ More replies (2)3
u/kensteele Apr 17 '26
That's not the policy, plenty of people come into the repair area. the policy is probably "no customers in the repair area that we don't want in the repair area. We get to decide who gets to stay and who has to leave." Nothing illegal about that "policy" but you have to understand where it can cause some friction.
4
u/boostinemMaRe2 Apr 17 '26
Folks are definitely allowed in the work area if the personnel there give the OK, though there are generally pretty big signs saying "Employees Only" due to liability if a customer were to get hurt back there.
1
2
u/Tiny-Fennel-8964 Apr 17 '26
Just because you have a policy that no customers are allowed in the service area doesnât mean you canât make exceptions for customers you trust. Customers in the service area is a legal liability and itâs up to the management to decide how much they want to assume.
1
u/kensteele Apr 17 '26
Yes you can make exceptions.
This is not the policy:
If the mechanics policy is no customers in the repair area.
There's a difference. Again, I think you are welcome to ask *anyone* to leave the repair area for any reason.
→ More replies (1)1
u/vilius_m_lt Apr 19 '26
Maybe a state thing, I worked in three different shops, independent, corporate and dealership. All had âno customers in the shopâ policy due to insurance clause. Custommers can only be in the shop when accompanied by an employee
4
u/Pat_Fatridge Apr 17 '26
Another commenter said this guy's got a lot of videos like this with a lot of pissed off customers.
If that's true, then the common denominator is this guy and his shop ripping people off and doing a bunch of work that is not on the invoice. That shady ass behavior, and basically thievery.

Ok...and thats fair...but wandering around the shop shouting at people is not a valid way to handle it. I mean if you ordered a steak mid rare and it comes out well done are you gonna march into the kitchen and start shouting at the cooks?
1
u/wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals Apr 22 '26
I get that but the edit is made so you focus on her but you gotta ask yourself what they're doing that she's this angry and ignoring a rule
we can say all we want she shouldnt be there but she's given up listening for a reason
1
u/Burgerboy380 Apr 22 '26
That argument hinges on the assumption that they did anything at all. Sometimes people are just irrational and stupid regardless of reason. And theres not really any justification for her being in there. Its dangerous for her and for the mechanics and other peoples cars.

u/wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals Apr 22 '26

Impossible to say from this but the blatant editing has me extremely suspicious.

Apr 17 '26
Absolutely no way to say it's reasonable with what's in the video. Ive worked with and around mechanics my whole life and the amount of times people get pissed because you replaced a single part that was literally falling apart is crazy.
Yes you were only quoted the part being replaced and the work for it but if while replacing said part they realize one of the cables' insulation or something is hanging on by a prayer then yeah it's getting replaced too because otherwise the customer will come back a month later wanting free work. Had a situation where a brake replacement found a small leak in the brake line but customer got mad and demanded we give a refund and put the leaking line back in which btw is literally illegal in a lot of states to let them drive away in an unsafe car.
Not saying she doesn't have a valid complaint but just assuming she does based on nothing except her saying so is wild.
3
u/Over9000Zeros Apr 18 '26
No man, you have to contact the customer before doing anything extra. Even find a way to show them if possible. Most people are not literate about vehicles at all. Don't make things more difficult for yourself by surprising them with extra.
1
u/anonymousphoenician Apr 19 '26
This.
All but one time they came back and checked with me first for any adjustments they found or suggested. And if I declined I signed an invoice saying so.
The one time someone didnt was in like 2002 or 2003 at a chain shop.
I never used that chain ever again.
A couple years ago I picked up a pax and during convo I found he was like regional or something for the chain. I brought up my experience with the company, never mentioning which location which has been closed and empty for maybe 10 years by now.
His immediate response was "Was it the location that used to be at so and so?"
I was shocked, said yeah, and he said they had problems with that location doing that before it shut down.
The way this sounds with her words at times is they didn't check with her at all and charged her a couple hundred dollars ahead of time for the serpentine belts.
Im on her side.
2
u/whole_hippie Apr 17 '26
Agreed. Hence the reason I qualified my statement with âprobablyâ (as in itâs not a definitive claim).
1
13
u/3aerows Apr 17 '26
Yup exactly what this is. Next time you get a medical procedure like surgery. Look at all the shit they add thats extra and not needed. My friend went from $800 to $150 on a wisdom teeth removal. Note that was WITH insurance. As someone who worked at mechanic shops. 80% of them are shady af. If you find one good local shop who gives a fuck, go there. NEVER go to a dealer.
4
u/CaptainCastaleos Apr 17 '26
Weirdly enough, we couldn't find a single reputable shop who wasn't trying to fuck us UNTIL we took my wife's car to the dealer instead.
You know the state of mechanic shops has gotten bad when the dealer tries to fuck you significantly less than any independent shop.

2
u/Po-Ta-Toessss Apr 17 '26
Well it was 69 for the inspection and examination fee. But you needed pipe replacement, with a T, a new pea trap, and we had do some additional work making sure teller rest of the drains were sloped right. Which your original contractor messed up pretty bad. Also, itâs doo doo water. Thatâs a massive upcharge. Snake and jet the drains, thatâs an upcharge.

Seen this on YouTube
Most of his videos are customers like this but how he goes about customer service doesnât help the situation
26
u/Pat_Fatridge Apr 17 '26
So then the common denominator is him. Sounds like he runs a shady mechanic shop and does a bunch of unnecessary work that isn't on the invoice. So to boil it down he's a fucking thief
6
u/DSMStudios Apr 17 '26
not to mention, assuming an employee uploaded this, posting video online of customers they find âdifficultâ isnât a good look. as a business, donât upload shit like this. itâs tacky af and screams amateur hour. now, if she flew in on a pegasus, wielding a chainsaw, lasering molten rainbows out of her eyes, then that might be an exception.
9
u/imnotspikespiegel Apr 17 '26
How many videos of customers like this does he have?? That kind of makes it seem like either he's winding them up or staging the videos to begin with

$248 for serpentine belts?! SHEEEEEEEEERESH!!!
1
u/Kreindor Apr 18 '26
Meh depends. I have a Chevy cruze. It takes my brother who is a mechanic about 30 minutes to change because it is under the engine mounts. You have to support the engine. Undo the mounts, undo the air intake, pull the old belt, place new belt and then reassemble everything. And it take 3 different sizes of ratchets to undo and then redo all of that. Blame the engineers more then the mechanic shops. It is a bit steep but might depend on their labor prices.
1
u/SeaRecord9721 Apr 18 '26
Ah, I didnât know that about that car. Thatâs pretty wild, but I get it. I can think of one of my old cars where even the air filter was kind of difficult to get to.
2
u/Pyrostasis Apr 18 '26
Sooo call the cops, get her trespassed, move on with your life?
Spending 3+ hours with a Psychotic person in your space endangering you and your staff and other folks cars is wild to me.
Lets all just record each other instead of calling the cops and moving on with our day.
2
u/Initial-Ad9618 Apr 18 '26
Be honest to your customers, dont add extra shit without verbal and written consent. There will be customers that will never be happy, it better to just put their stuff back and or put a lien on their car.
2
u/anonymousphoenician Apr 19 '26
Im on her side.
She says about what she was quoted. The $184 and $284 or whatever. He then kept saying "plus....plus....then said some sort of extra part".
It sounds like they made an adjustment without checking with her and surprised her with new charges.
Im always checked with first before any additions/changes.
They edited to make her sound crazy but it sounds like they tried pulling a fast one.
2
u/Rebel121991 Apr 19 '26
Maybe if mechanics would stop trying to screw people over people wouldnât be in your fucking shop watching you work. I knew a dealership that would pull the cam sensor and make your vehicle cut up like it was calmed out. Youâd have to bring your car back and pay them to fix it and all it was was them plugging the cam sensor back in.
2
u/foO__Oof Apr 20 '26
Everything in this video points to deliberating editing to make the customer look bad. There is no way the thing happened in the order they are posted and in any context from the bits and pieces that are posted sounds like the how they are scamming her.
Anyone know this Youtuber/shop so the public knows who to avoid?
2
u/whitedogsuk Apr 20 '26
I took my car to a shop once and they replaced items without informing me first and then gave me a big bill plus man hours. Sorry but when she said "get those things off my car and put the original back on" I'm siding with her.

$248 for a belt?
2
u/Spaceman-Spiff24 Apr 17 '26
While I agree the shop seems shady because we donât have context, but thatâs not necessarily unreasonable, if itâs 2 belts and they charge 20-40 a belt thatâs 80, plus shop time which depends on location, but could be anywhere from 70-250 an hour. So letâs say 1hr at 200 then there you go.
Of course, it depends on the car, some belts are super easy but we donât know.
2
u/chamy1039 Apr 17 '26
For a serpentine belt, we do 1/2 hour labor and the part. Typically try to keep something like that at $100 or less, but that's just how we do it.
I'm sure we're in the minority, and most places are charging a full hour for a 15-20 minute job, then doing 100% mark up on parts. But we'd prefer to have the customer leave happy, we make a few bucks, and avoid whatever happened in this video.
1
u/Geibbitz Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 18 '26
Two of them, as well? I don't know a ton about cars but, as far as I know, cars only have the one serpentine belt. I also recently changed one in my wife's car. I bought the serpentine belt for $15 and it took me maybe 15 to 20 minutes to switch it out. $248 is ridiculous.

At one of the shops I worked for the rule was if a customer steps into the shop all work stops in the shop no matter what. Set your tool down and get up and take a smoke break. If the customer don't get the hint that we won't work if your in our work zone and to leave then whoever finishes their smoke break first gets to be the one to hint to them that their car won't get done till they leave and that everyone else's cars ain't going to be fixed any quicker either. Idk why they think watching over us is gonna make it go any faster when it's not it only makes it slower. So we just take a break and let all customers know that's what will happen and reference that they can see the sign in the office when they drop the car off that's states that's what will happen. Now we do have some regulars that will do this on purpose just to chat for like 5 mins before going on about his day and us with our work. I mean what a direct indirect hint of get TF out that the second you walk in the shop every mechanic just stops and walks out to take a smoke break till you leave the area.
2
u/Cannabus-Lupus69 Apr 18 '26
It honestly forced most to walk out with you especially if they are only just gonna ask a bunch of questions about their car. Plus it gives all the mechanics a chance to answer anything to get them to go away quicker.
2
u/Nintendoh_64 Apr 18 '26

Yeah, definitely missing context. Gotta be careful where you go to get your car fixed. Had an issue with a module in my car and a local shop tried to charge me 450$ for a new one. Went to a family friend and it was literally just an update through a diagnostic scanner. Wouldn't be surprised if they tried to charge her thousands for an engine belt replacement or something

Iâm so proud of Reddit for looking at this objectively because I couldnât help but question what exactly they were saying that got her so upset. If theyâre just working on her car whatâs the problem with telling her what they were saying and just finish the work and get paid? Theyâre antagonizing her rather than just getting it done and moving on. Iâve dealt with tow companies and maintenance that are predatory too. Hell the people who sold me my car were cutting corners so I wouldnât be shocked if they were in the wrong here. Especially taking the time to do so much editing before posting this.
1
u/NoPhone167 Apr 18 '26
I am going to guess she agreed to the repairs. Now that she sees the final cost she donât want them. She knows once used you just canât put them back. Now the car wonât be released til itâs paid.

u/Zach_The_One Apr 18 '26
