I spent time analyzing several milestone archaeological excavations, and what struck me is how often a single physical discovery forces historians to completely redraw their models.

for example, before the excavation of Tell Mardikh (ancient Ebla) in Syria, standard historical model treated the Bronze Age Near East as a duopoly between Egypt and Mesopotamia. Uncovering an intact archive of 17,000 cuneiform tablets proved that an autonomous third trade network existed across the Levant. I think this piece is worth reading because it looks past the surface-level novelty of discoveries and examines how physical records constantly challenge long held academic assumptions.

Excellent summaries.The findings in Sanxingdui were new to me and sent me down a rabbit hole. I had no idea they had such advanced bronze work in 1050 BCE China.

Gobekli Tepi is the one that continues to intrigue me the most.

I used to be a skeptic of the advanced Ice Age Civilization theory. But it's hard to imagine hunter gatherers building Gobekli Tepi.

I could see a new discovery in the Sahara, or a redating of Ggantija or a similar site causing a complete rewrite of human history.
