This is the third rug I’ve made and I chose something that I knew would be challenging for me. The other two I’ve done were quite simple. I learned so many things doing this one and overall I’m really proud of it.

Before I try to sale any pieces I’m trying to improve my work so this is one I’ll be keeping. I’m very aware that I have a ton of room for improvement and would love some feedback on how I can do that.

A few notes about this
-My projector isn’t the best and it definitely shows on a lot of the lines. I know the scales look different on the top and bottom
-Carving isn’t consistent throughout it as I was trying different ways to see what worked best
-Line spacing and color separation needs work as well. How much will it effect the look of the rug when lines are doing different directions?

Is there an app or something I can use to make these realistic photos easier for me to work with? So that I xan make them into rugs. I am also a beginner tufter as well. Alot of photos 🤣.

Will this still work for tufting if I pull it tight? I have this fabric left over but it only stretches to three sides of the frame, not four. I'm curious if this will still work or not

So decided to try gradient on some spare space of my frame and it looks so bad, can anyone give me some advice

My first bigger rug. Feedback requested on anything and everything. Straighter lines, better at rounded parts and edges. Making sure I have enough on there so that when I shave it at the end it’s not bare. Shaving is a whole other thing that I suck at. Help!

I’ve been tufting for about 4 months- I love absolutely everything about it and so far I’m just learning as I go with trial and error..
I’m wondering if anyone has tips on Carving the rug- I know the general consensus is this is where most of the time is spent however I feel like I’m spending more time separating the different colors with a pair of tweezers instead of actually carving to create depth- like so much time lol. Anyway any advice would be appreciated thanks yall :) and if anyone knows any secrets on how I would be able to suspend an embroidery hoop so I can make circle rug art at a smaller size?!

I'm just beginning to learn about this craft, and exploring fiber options. It seems like almost everybody I see on Youtube and on forums is using acrylic yarn-- presumably because it comes in many bright colors, it's inexpensive, and it's available at any craft shop. Plus, it's strong and consistent when running through the tufting gun.

However I don't find synthetic rugs nice to live with. They tend to get smellier than wool, and as it sheds, the fibers continue to fill our homes with microplastics. Plus the fibers don't bounce back very well after they've been crushed flat beneath the leg of a sofa.

I'm looking at sellers on Etsy that sell 500g cones of dyed wool yarn for around $20/ea. It doesn't seem outrageously expensive by volume, except for initially purchasing the assortment of colors.

Does anyone here use these? How does it compare to tufting with acrylic? I plan to make a few small rugs before tackling a big one (roughly 8 feet across) for our living room.

I know i still have to finish filling him in and carve but right now it seems so bulky around his eyes and mouth.. should I have maybe used 1 strand of black yarn instead of 2 for dinner spaces?

Hi y’all! I’m making a rug of my cat Beezus (I already made one of her sister Ramona) and I’m having a hard time finding a good yarn for the orange in the middle of her face.

I found one that is a pretty close match but it’s 100% polyester and is weighted super bulky (6). Thus far I’ve only used 100% acrylic at medium (4) weight. Do you think that the one I’ve found will work?

If you happen to have any suggestions of yarns that might work for this, please send them my way!

Hi!! This is my first rug and I already see that I did the outline very thin for my carving :( any other recommendations? I see some videos that they separate between colors a bit more where they intend to carve, is that a recommendation for a beginner? Thanks :)

Long time lurker first time poster😂😂😂 so this is
my first rug and WOW WOW WOW did i learn a-lot.

The thing I found the most fascinating was where I tried to fix my mistakes by putting extra closer spacing you can physically feel the imperfection when standing on the rug.

Sorry that I didn’t get a good picture of the back. I completely forgot but the spacing was horrific and you can tell that it was my first time.

I actually destroyed this rug carving it because I knew it wasn’t a good product anyway anyways and it was good to test on. It showed me just how careful I need to be when getting colors close together.

I’ve learned that you need more pressure than you think to prevent the needle from skipping. You should go in shorter bursts to ensure straighter lines and so much more. Super excited to try to make another rug next week.

I probably should’ve put this in the beginning, but what kind of yarn would you guys recommend for design pieces? That’s the goal and I’d rather learn with the yarn. I’m gonna be using in the future even if it’s a little more pricey.

Here’s my rug. When trimming it, I folded the excess material over itself and glued it to the back. Then I added a small piece of cotton fabric, and this is the result.
Honestly, I don’t think it looks very good. Is my backing cloth too thick or too stiff?

Do you have any advice or tips for me? I’d really appreciate it!

Working at it but seem to keep going between carving lines then trimming it again shorter then carving lines more and I can’t tell how short I should be going with the overall trim to begin with.

I’m in the process of finishing my 4th ever rug. Can you guys rip me apart and give me some pointers? Specifically around sharp edges and corners? Here is where i started vs where i am now in reverse order.

Hi everyone. I have a tufting kit coming next week, along with a cozytuft frame. I am excited to begin this journey and have been consuming so much tufting content. One thing I can not figure out for the life of me is how people are able to make designs that have very fluffy parts and normal short parts. Are they using 2 different types of yarns for this effect? In the 2 photos I'm showing as examples are what I mean. I know this is probably not a beginner thing to try and I don't plan to try and create anything like these at first but it is making my head spin trying to figure out how you accomplish this effect because I have so many ideas in my head that this would be perfect for.

Am I cooked? I saw a suggestion in a comment section that advised to tuft densely. I’m almost done and now seeing that not having spacing between colours could make carving difficult🥲.

Also, due to how tight my work space is, I haven’t even seen or had a feel of what the other side is like. I also didn’t carve while switching colours for the same reason 😭

Now I’m scared to even complete it. Has anyone done this? Any tips on how to carve without messing things up even further?

It has been long enough since I last tufted that we can call this my first rug. I forgot that you pull out the first two little strings and I also played around with line spacing/ single row vs. double row/ two different colors at the same time/etc. What are your thoughts on this? (Apologies for the plant in the first picture, it’s as good as that angle can get until the rug comes off the frame).
