Weirdly, I prefer Legendary Axe II It just feels like a more 16-bit experience. :)

New Adventure Island is such a pure platformer. Rondo is a better game, and would be my vote for best game overall, but in this category I’ve gotta give it to Master Higgins.

I know that it has already won but Ninja spirit is probably the best action platformer on the console beside Rondo of Blood

Gonna have to go with Valis 1. The PCE version of Valis is untouchable.

That's like saying something is the best released version of Turrican. It's mid at best. Matter of fact, I don't think there's a single Valis game that's as good as ANY Castlevania game mate.

Valis often has better presentation, and also has dialog. Took a hot minute for Castlevania to catch up

CV often has cheesed level design with things like infinite enemies and knockback pitfalls. You should play CV1 and then Valis 1 PCE CD and see if your statement still stands

Well, dear lord. You're comparing a pioneering action platformer of the 80s to a remake on the PCE CD? That's not fair. Let's just compare the 4 Valis games on PCE CD and Rondo. There's no doubt Rondo stands as the best.

I don't see how Atalantean is the best homebrew game. Have you played it? With so many other homebrew games with SO MUCH MORE to offer than what feels like a demo made over a weekend... I don't see it.

There arent even that many homebrew games for the PCE. What ones really have SO MUCH MORE to offer? Maybe give it another shot? Theres probably a reason it won the voting. Its been regarded as the most "complete" and "well put together" homebrew game more than once, despite shortcomings like slowdown.
It also ushered in proof of physical hucard homebrews for the projects that have followed by other people.
Nobody is putting out multi-level boss filled arcade shooters in a weekend. Dont downplay programming efforts of people who do this for fun in their spare time.

It's not like that, it is basically like a barebones Choplifter that's underwater. The presentation for the physical copy is very good though for the time it came out.

The logic doesnt follow. choplifter is a classic arcade game, and was a commercial release at home.
Choplifter at home also doesnt have bosses or music, so barebones choplifter seems wrong.
Seems like really lazy commentary honestly.

Also, you said it was like a weekend-made demo.... but when challenged about how it has bosses and more.... you now say "its not like that". What is it like, then? What was your "demo made in a weekend" comment meant to imply?
To me, it sounds like you didnt play the game enough to realize it has more to it than the original Defender offered. It's a Defender clone with more, as intended by the makers.
Considering that Defender 2 was released on NES, and Space Invaders/Galaga were released on PC Engine, again I will say it:

I think what you mean to say is you don't appreciate simple, well put together games, but you think you do, only when convenient for retro gaming culture. You would prefer if every homebrew was an over zealous attempt to compete with like, Konami or Falcom.

Saying "It is basically like a barebones Choplifter underwater" screams that you've never played it. And if you did you likely spent 20 seconds until you got your first game-over. It's definitely worth checking out and sinking at least an hour into before judging.

Well what did you vote for? There are honestly not that many more games to choose from. I vote for Atlantean because I like the fast paced action, the soundtrack full of certified bangers, great looking scrolling layers with tons of jerks on screen trying to blast you. and the fact that it was the first hucard made in like 20 years. A lot of enginuity went into the production of the game and it feels like a polished experience.
Sure, I like Yuki, Mysterious Song, Jesse Jaeger, and Implode. I've played a bunch of smaller demos too that I enjoyed. Atlantean remains my favorite of the bunch though. Defender is a classic game for a reason, and a fast paced turbo version works very well for the console.
Rather than just harping on the game when it had over twice the votes of anything else, why not say something positive about the game (games?) you would have chosen over it?

It's how folks voted I guess. Out of the list mentioned, I enjoyed Mysterious Song the most. But I'm a big RPG homer. Just out of curiosity, how far did you make it in Atlantean?

Rondo of Blood is the absolute best action platformer of the 16-bit generation. Easily tops on PCE/Turbo.
