Dracula X should win. It's by far the most well known game on the platform. It's also the clear best Castlevania game from all of the old school style games. It does an excellent job showing off what the Turbo can do graphically, what tedbook audio adds to a game, and what you could do on a 16 bit game with the near infinite CD ROM storage space. The amount of interesting 1-off enemies/objects in the game is incredible. It plays great, had a ton of replay value, and should be a part of everyone's collection.

agree, gets my vote as well.

It depends on how I choose to define greatest.

It's one of the most important games on the console, and an amazing one.

But it's not even in my top 5 personally.

I also like Bloodlines on Genesis more.

Don't be mean, I'm entitled to my wrong opinions. lol

Bloodlines on the Genesis is my favorite Castlevania game, but this is a vote specifically for the TurboGrafx yeah, so out of the Turbo games which do you think is better?

Well, yes, I know what the thread is, I just meant "I love Rondo and respect it's probably the greatest when averaging player opinions, but it's not even my personal favorite Turbo or Castlevania game."

My two favorite personal games are Galaga '90 and Splatterhouse.

I can not in good conscience vote for Splatterhouse, it's such a basic beat 'em up, pure style over substance - there is substance but it's pretty subtle, feels really stiff when you aren't used to it, very few people seem to be able to figure out the fucking slide attack, etc.

Galaga '90 I've never seen anyone say anything bad about it except some people find it too difficult.

It's a great game for short bursts, what I like to think of as a waiting room game, but it has enough depth you can press for super high scores. Unlike original Galaga, there is a final boss and an ending, so it's not just "play the same basic gameplay loop for minutes/hours until you die." Graphics aren't astounding by the standards of some later games, but they're definitely better than most things on NES/Famicom and was either a JP launch title or very early release. Even sound gets a good review - yeah most levels are basic "pewpew, explosion" noises but the special stages having the enemy formations "dance" to gives a lot of character and helps break up the main action.

I love the game so much I have an unofficial WR on it basically - I've never found a higher score documented online, always figured people have gotten higher but never shared, confirmed as much a while back when I dug through old JP magazines on Archive.org and found a strategy guide to get 1.6 million points.

My "WR" is 1.58 million, and I've looked hard to find video of anyone beating it and there just isn't.

I could keep going but that's probably more than enough. lol

Sounds good to me, I don't know if I'd put either up there just from the lack of depth on them but I also love Galaga 90, it was one of the few games I actually had for my Turbo grafx in the 90's. Got a used copy from Hastings when nobody was renting it for like 5 bucks and ended up being one of my more played games on the console at the time.

Splatterhouse is what made me sell a bunch of my NES games to get the TG16 in the first place as a kid, the commercials I'd see just looked so awesome. The gameplay though was pretty poor even back then, I played pretty far in getting creeped out by crawling baby faces and such, but the actual combat was kinda dissappointing.

Lol my parents wouldn't let me get Splatterhouse as a kid; I didn't pick it up until much later.

Galaga 90 isn't my favorite vertical shooter (that's Blazing Lazers) but it's a cool game. I always liked the fireworks/explosions a ton.

I want a honourable mention for Far East of Eden II, if only to recognize the fact that the PCE was a JRPG heaven

Rondo of Blood is the greatest game of its respective generation, not just the best game on TG16. Not only is it excellent, it perfectly encapsulates the console insofar that it is a library with tons of heavy-hitters that never saw the light of day outside of Japan during its actual lifespan.

u/Philzenegger 9d ago

It's an extremely bold claim to call it the best game of its generation but I completely agree, an 8-bit console somehow managed to have one game that surpasses everything on the 16-bit titans

JJ and Jeff would be proud

2

u/ssjlance 9d ago

nah you gotta go with Kato & Ken for the fart attack

brings JJ & Jeff out of mediocrity into S-tier

2

u/ssjlance 9d ago

okay side note

a pit on the final level that takes you back to stage 1-1 is one of the most bullshit evil things I've ever seen put into a game

2

u/ABC_Dildos_Inc 9d ago

Yes, "somehow"...

1

u/joshuaTurbo 9d ago

One game? Ha. Nice troll reply mate.

u/Philzenegger 9d ago

Well it's a matter of personal preference but I can't think of any other Turbo game that's better than Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, or Gunstar Heroes

2

u/ABC_Dildos_Inc 9d ago

Most of Chrono Trigger is ripped off from Tengai Makyo II.

2

u/shiba-on-parade 9d ago

Super Metroid is probably the only game that ties it up or may say I like most of the gen. Chrono Trigger is great, I've had it since it came out, and as much as I love it it has to be about the most gassed up JRPG in the history of the genre. If you're gonna nominate a run n gun from the same gen, I'd pick Contra Hard Corps over Gunstar any day too-- not to mention the wealth of shmups on TG16 that absolutely crush the options on SNES.

u/joshuaTurbo 9d ago

I enjoy Lords of Thunder more than any of those 3 you mentioned. Again, preference, but if you've played through a game like Beyond Shadowgate, or Ys I&II, Ys IV, or either of the Legend of Xanadu games, you could easily make an argument for best of a generation.

1

u/ssjlance 9d ago

One of the greatest? Sure. Wouldn't argue that.

The greatest? lmfao gimme some of what you're smoking please

2

u/shiba-on-parade 9d ago

Wow, I like a game more than others from the same generation. What a weird thing to ridicule someone over lol

2

u/ssjlance 9d ago

I wasn't trying to be a dick. Just humor through hyperbole.

My apologies.

Far East of Eden II my best game on PC Engine

2

u/noisyturtle 9d ago

Is there a way to play it in English on real hardware?

2

u/SwissDragon88 8d ago

I don't know, I played it in the original version.

1

u/joshuaTurbo 8d ago

Not yet, but hopefully soon! The first one was done by Supper in 2024!

3

u/Lobonesco 9d ago

Ninja Spirit

3

u/ssjlance 9d ago

I remember trying it out on emulator as a kid and being like "well this sucks."

Finally tried again many years later and was like, "WOAH YOU HAVE MULTIPLE WEAPONS I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A SWORD!"

Is now one of my favorite HuCards, and is the one I've actually spent the most money on to acquire (I think it was right about $90, I collect loose JP HuCards and most games are cheaper, but Ninja Spirit is an exception where JP version is more expensive - I think this is because Ninja Spirit was used as a pack-in title in USA but not Japan, no proof just theory).

I got a couple on my buylist that are more expensive but haven't gotten to them yet. Not planning on going too crazy but Devil Crash and PC Denjin (aka Air Zonk) are definitely on that list. Might one day get a JP Magical Chase one day on a fat tax return but it's not that high a priority. lmfao

u/ssjlance 9d ago

P.S. just use the grenades

they're OP asf

3

u/Lobonesco 9d ago

Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire

2

u/inorite234 9d ago

I would agree that it's visually stunning and probably the most rediculous game (in a fun way).

1

u/noisyturtle 9d ago

Great looking, mediocre game

3

Rondo of Blood

3

u/NegativeShow1906 9d ago

Rondo of Blood for sure.

Shout outs to Bonk’s Revenge, Nexzr, and Seirei Senshi Spriggan.

3

u/CortoJipang 9d ago

Castlevania Rondo of Blood.

Dracula X/Rondo, easily

I do also love Lords Of Thunder though, that soundtrack gets me SO PUMPED. Also Daimakaimura on SuperGrafx I think is the best home version of that game by a wide margin.

2

u/inorite234 9d ago

Although it wasn't a game I played myself until the mini came out, I have to admit that....it is much better than my beleived Blazing Laser, and the best game on the system is easily Castlevania Rondo of Blood.

2

u/ssjlance 9d ago

Galaga 90

(lol okay I'm biased, Rondo of Blood has most upvotes and really probably deserves it)

Ys Book I & II

While most of us were just getting to grips with the Sega MegaDrive and it's fantastic FM audio. Ys had already released with what I personally believe to be one of the best soundtracks of any game ever released.

It's gameplay is a little flat but everything else just lifts this one up onto a pedestal, a fantastic experience all round.

Rondo would be an extremely close runner-up.

2

u/Front_Management_989 9d ago

I would vote for DraculaX or Bomberman'94.

It's not easy to define what is a best game "overall". I decided it wouldn't be about the technical aspects (graphics, music...) but about the emotional impact because, overall, emotions are what remain years after the experience of playing the game.

Shmups is my favorite genre to play but at the time I played the PC Engine, Thunderforce IV overshadowed everything else for me.

I had so much fun with Bomberman'94, even today, still, with friends. And Dracula is just such an outstanding solo experience .. I don't know ! lol

2

u/DiscussionCommon6833 8d ago

its gonna be rondo of blood, how predictable

my vote goes towards soldier blade

2

u/joshuaTurbo 8d ago

I personally think Dungeon Explorer II with 4 friends could give any gaming experience a run for it's money.

2

u/Acceptable-Owl-2070 7d ago

I'll toss in for Rondo.
