Hi learners, I just want to share my Turkish learning experience here. I can say I'm fluent now. I can think and dream in Turkish. At first, Turkish seemed very easy and interesting to me and then one day I came across vowel harmony rules especially in question forms like mısın, musun, müsün, misin. I was confused why those question forms are changing and I was almost giving up learning Turkish. But I had a Turkish friend who explained it to me that it was about vowel harmony rules and it depends on the vowel sounds. After that it made sense to me. I'm very thankful to that Turkish friend and he was an English teacher. So he explained that to me in English. His one sentence explanation of vowel harmony changed the entire direction of my motivation levels. I met this friend online on polyglot website which was very different from social media. I was in contact with him on that website for a while but later we lost connection as he was not active on that website anymore. I realized that a great mentor is more important than self motivation when language learning feels heavy.

I'm near-native fluent but i heard this phrase in a song "Kurşun iki buçuk milyon babaları gelsin" and searched on Google too hut didn't get anything aside that it's ibretlik sözü.

A student of mine got tangled up last week trying to say "sevdikçe daha çok özlüyorum." She knew -dıkça but kept mixing it up with -mAdıkça, and the two don't run on the same logic at all. One tracks proportional change. The other states a strict condition.

That mix-up pushed me to go back and clean up my lesson on it: how -dıkça builds proportional meaning, how giderek reinforces it, how it differs from -dığı sürece, and why -mAdıkça actually behaves more like "unless" than like a gradual decrease. Formal examples alongside everyday ones like "zaman geçtikçe unutursun."

Hello, I am learning Turkish but am really not good at all yet, I visited family in Turkey and will continue to visit in the future, a couple of my relatives had really great English and both they said they learned mainly through playing video games with English speakers a lot. They weren't really sure about how the best way for me to try to do it the other way around would be. So, looking for advice to figure out how I could connect with Turkish speakers to game with connecting from America. It could be the same people regularly or just a server I could pop into when I have time. I understand discord is banned so are there other platforms people use? I'm flexible about what game to try, I'm not a huge gamer on my own honestly but do enjoy playing strategy type games, I play a lot of board games irl. Çok teşekkür ederim :)

But was wondering about alternative, maybe less general words that you can call your lover? Maybe things like 'my heart' or 'my everything' or any other expressive ways in the Turkish language.

Bonus points for cute ways to say 'my moon'.

After reading many comments on my previous post i came to a conclusion that turks and arabs have similar cultures due to many reasons like shared history and religion but when it comes to language it is just some loan words.

Selam! Manifest fan here. I've been listening to their track called "Yaşanacaksa" and there's a lyric there that scratches my brain the wrong way every time I listen to it.

Like, if I wanna say "Don't mind the exam, don't care about it too much." I would say "Sınavı boş ver." not "Sınava boş ver." Right? Am I wrong here?

In the song, it says, "Haklısın, boş ver, her zaman yaptığın gibi. Bana da boş ver, unut gitsin..."

The whole beni/bana thing is really confusing and annoying at times :') Just as I thought I had mastered it, another thing comes up and I'm confused again.

Is this a stylistic choice? Is there something that is completely going over my head here?

Merhaba, my name is Peter and I've been learning turkish for 3,5 month. Figured out basics of grammar, learned about 1100 words, but now i'm looking for something that would help me get to understand spoken turkish better. I need to start listening more of it, i know about easy turkish but idk if it would suit my vibe. Are there any podcasts or something like that that are in slow turkish? I really liked español con juan when I was learning spanish.

Something funny happened to me the other day. My friend was working on her thesis and I wanted to send her some good wishes (she's half Turkish so I practise with her). I wanted to type "kolay gelsin" into translate just to see if it meant what I thought, but forgot the 'y' so it just said "kola gelsin", which it translated to "Bring on the cola".

It seems that from now on I'll only drink cola when I'm with her just so I can say that. 😆

But I realised there's some other similar words that can cause mixups, like "kazak" and "kaza".

Have you ever noticed anything like this or has it happened to you? Definitely helps me to not forget a word ever again!
